As an Illinois transplant, my husband and I were looking for a good Chinese restaurant near St. John. A neighbor recommended this to us. My husband had Orange Chicken combination plate and I had Moo Goo Gai Pan combination plate. The egg rolls were greasy. The orange chicken also greasy. The moo goo was good but chunks of veggies needed to be cut more bite sized and the same for the chicken. The fried rice was a joke - maybe just rice they rolled around in a wok but didn't have anything but a few peas thrown in it. Anyone have a recommendation for something better? I love this place. Their Orange Chicken is great, the Happy Family is awesome as well. The staff is always friendly and the food is always ready quickly. I have never had any issues with them all orders have been hot and correct. For a family of 4 we usually order Orange Chicken, Happy Family, Pot Stickers (dumplings), crab Rangoon and house fried rice and always have left overs for the next day for under $40. Lunch specials are fantastic too, for $5 you get a huge serving of food with a pop or soup. Must try them, they don't have much of a dining area but they do have an option to dine in. read more

I'm a happy customer of Uncle Chens's. Good food, cheap and it's ready pretty quick too. Here's the skinny: Take-out OR Dine-in. Picture menu's are awesome. Good food & portions are just the right size. Soup or Pop... not both. Here's the fat: It's a small place, a few booths and a large table in front. The large table is kinda useless though, since it's normally covered in magazines or newspapers. Take-out is a snap, just call it in and it's usually ready in about 10 minutes. There are big picture menu's on the wall and above the register. The wall menu features the specials. Most of the time, WYSIWYG "What You See Is What You Get". The food is pretty good, typical Chinese take-out. I've never been OVERLY impressed but, their lunch specials can't be beat as far as pricing and portion size go. Beef and Broccoli or Chicken and Mushroom are my two staple lunch specials, pretty tasty if you ask me. The meats and veggies are cooked well and the fried rice they make is A-OK too. With the lunch specials you get Soup OR Pop... that's the only thing I'm not a fan of. It'd be great if they just wrap it all up into one. It's not like it REALLY matters since I get the pop added on too. Thing is if both were included and the price was to go up say... $1 it'd feel like a better deal than to get one or the other for an EXTRA charge. They do tofu lo mein for me here and add extra vegetables. It is the best I have ever had. The tofu is perfectly cooked and not sopping in oil. Add some plain fried rice and I'm content for two days. Husband will spend the night at the p's house if he gets Uncle Chen's for lunch the next day. He loves the chicken lo mein combo. Yes, I bribe him with food and he's okay with it. It's still hot when we get back to the p's house in CP - or even back to Zville. We grabbed some at 10:30 on Saturday morning, drove back to Zville, and ate it while watching IU choke during the Big Ten Tourney without reheating. Awesome. read more

Once again, another typical Chinese joint in the Region. When I walked in, I did have a bit more hope for this place as you can see from the counter the kitchen area with several big woks and the family manning the operations. It reminded me a lot of Brandy Ho's in San Francisco. However the food wasn't anything better than you'll get at most of the Chinese places around the local area. The Crab Rangoon, while better than most of what we've found in the area, had the look and the texture of something that was bought from the bulk frozen food section at Costco's. The Kung Pao Chicken had a very smoky flavor and the pieces of chicken in the dish were smaller than the peanuts in the dish - come on. We also had ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken. The sauce was in a small container and tasted like it came in bulk and the breaded chicken pieces while a bit bigger than the pieces that were in my Kung Pao dish had more breading on them then the chicken itself. I ended up pealing off the breading and mixing the chicken into the remains of my Kung Pao dish. read more

I'm very picky. Lots of places like this serve crappy meats with lots of celery smothered in sauce. Here I got nice slices of quality white chicken meat with a spicy sauce. Yummy. Well this was my first time there. I was looking for Chinese food in my area and I am glad to say that this was an wonderful experience. You could see into the kitchen and everything and everyone looked clean. Believe me I have seen some places that after looking at the kitchen, I wanted to cancel my order. Not this place. Once I got home, all I can say is, my food, Shrimp and Lobster, spoke for itself. It was good. I will definitely be going back. Wow this place is so inconsistent, it depends on who is cooking. Ordered Kung Pao, Mooshu Shrimp, and Beef Broccoli each dish was watered down with zero flavor. Service was lack luster and they make you feel that you are doing them a favor spending your hard earned money. read more

This place is absolutely delicious. I haven't tried many of their dishes but it would appear the how one's sesame chicken comes out, would be a good indicator. I've had places in Seattle literally toss it in ketchup, places in Florida serve god knows what meat, and now Uncle Chen's - with actual chicken and the perfect amount of sweetness in the sauce. Their lunch special is AMAZING. Each person can easily have two meals from it. It's such a steal and we love that it's offered even on the weekends. The portions of other meals are huge as well - and it reheats like Chinese should, a total dream. It's definitely family run and the interior is just what you'd expect from a non-chain restaurant. They have a foosball table that entertains my toddler while we wait for our food to-go (we sometimes purposely walk-in to order so he can play it), tables by the windows and then old Taco Bell-style booths along the wall. They aren't always the friendliest, but I think it's just the culture and as a southern gal myself, perhaps I'm TOO polite and read into it. It doesn't make me uncomfortable or make me not wish to patronize the place though. PS - they carry both Coke AND Pepsi products which is a silly thing to care about but I LOVE having the option as I will avoid places with Pepsi like the plague (lol) read more
