Yummy! I love Jamaican food. My best friend is Jamaican so for years his mom has made me curry goat, jerk chicken, jerk pork, etc. So Uncle Don's is something exciting to join the Hicksville culinary scene. We got there around 7PM and a line was already forming out the door. It's tiny inside and HOT but we managed. The staff is super friendly and asks exactly what you want, going as far to ask what type of sauce we wanted on our rice and pigeon peas. The prices are fair considering the amount of food you receive. They have a large menu but not so big that you can't figure out what you want to get. The jerk chicken was my favorite. It wasn't spicy at all (I like spice) but the flavor was there so it was still enjoyable. The curry chicken was also very good. The rice was perfection. The beef patty I had the following day was good but again not spicy (I asked for spicy instead of the mild flavor). The coco bread was decent but went well with the food. I'm on Long Island for work, and wanted some authentic Caribbean food. I saw this place had great reviews, so I decided to give it a try. The first time I went I had the Curry Goat with rice and peas and plantain. It was amazing! A few days later I went back and got the jerk chicken, rice and peas and steam veg. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Nice and spicy!! I saw another patron get the stewed chicken, and it looked delicious. I will be going back soon, and trying that for myself. This place I stumbled across, I was craving for some good authentic beef patties. My wife and I walked in here, and was immediately greeted by the most incredible staff and amazing aroma of the food. My first words when I walked in were "omg it smells amazing here!!" They were so friendly, they offered us to try their oxtails and jerk chicken. It was incredible!! We ended up getting a large platter of oxtails with rice and peas. And 3 different beef Pattie's. The flavors are so fresh, it leaves your mouth watering for more...lemme tell you, the oxtails!! Geez they are so tender it literally just melts in your mouth. You can really tell how much love they put into their food. Very homemade. The customer service here was so warm and welcoming! I've eaten takeout multiple times from Uncle Don's. The place is SMALL, take out only. The jerk chicken is the best jerk chicken i've ever had. It does have a good kick to it. (I usually don't care for jerk chicken!) The patties are fantastic. I like the spicy beef and veggie (veggie reminds me of chicken pot pie minus the chicken) Once you go, you'll start to crave it. FINALLY! I no longer have to drive to Jamaica Ave to get proper Jamaican food! First impression of Uncle Don's is it's very clean inside. The staff was very welcoming, including the cook who came out of the kitchen to say hello and goodbye, and to double check that they got my order right. Now the food. I got a medium jerk pork with rice and peas and sweet plantain, plus a couple of beef patties. Im glad I called ahead because it was a bit late in the day and they had to make some fresh patties for me, so it was a few minute wait. No big deal since I was traveling from another town. The beef patties are some of the best I've had. They're better than Jamaican Flavors in Queens who are known for their patties. Very fresh, cooked perfectly and the filling was spiced perfectly. The medium size jerk pork I got is a generous portion. The pork is bursting with flavor! Nice balance of savory and spice, the pork has some nice fatty pieces that melt once they hit your tongue, and the meaty portion was very tender. It reminds me of well prepared low and slow barbecue pork. That kind of tenderness takes time and very calculated preparation. The rice and peas and plantains were solid as well. Both very fresh, and they perfectly complimented the pork. If you're in the Hicksville area and want some delicious, stick to your ribs Jamaican food, look no further. The food is simply amazing and if that's not enough to get you in the door the staff is even better! I love Caribbean food ever since the first time I tried it. I moved away from NY last year and when I found out this spot opened up I made sure it was my first stop when I came home to visit. The owners of the restaurant are super friendly and great people they deserve the support. The food is just as great as they are! I'm so happy there's finally Caribbean food this close. Came in today after hearing about this place from a friend and it was great. So many fresh Jamaican patties to choose from I was in heaven. I ordered the oxtail plate with rice & peas and plantains. It was excellent! The gravy is everything, definitely get it on your rice. Of course I ordered a bunch of patties too and they were all delicious, flakey, buttery, seasoned goodness. They also have a few fresh juices and cheesecakes as well. The interior of this small establishment is kept clean. Upon entering, I was greeted by Tameka, whom was very friendly and helpful. I tried the jerk chicken, jerk pork, fried chicken and the oxtail. The jerk seasoning on the jerk chicken and pork were great, delivering just the right amount of kick. Of the pieces of jerk chicken I had, it was hit or miss with them being nice and succulent or a bit dry. The jerk pork was okay just a tad bit chewy. If they can find a way to improve on this, they would be amazing. The oxtail was nice and tender, with the flavoring being nice and balanced. The fried chicken's seasoning in my opinion is a nice change to the KFC and Popeyes I've been having. Their decision to freshly fry the chicken as it's ordered is a good one, as it makes the crunchiness of the outside of the chicken quite satisfying. The only downside of the fried chicken is that the pieces are quite tiny. I did order a spicy beef patty but by the time I got to it, I was already falling into a food coma so I'll have to try a fresh one the next visit. Overall, the food and service here was good. Rating: 4.5/5 Side note - I wanted to point out (to anyone that finds this important) that they charge a 3.XX% credit card fee. Upon ordering takeout, I was told my food would be ready in fifteen to twenty minutes. I happened to arrive to the heavenly-smelling, ultra-clean-looking establishment in ten minutes and my food was ready. There are attractive desserts displayed in a case, and the young woman at the register was happy to volunteer information about the origins of their desserts - even at closing time when typically energy is dwindling. Not sure what the dynamics of ownership are at Uncle Don's, but it seems to be family-owned, as it is evident that the place is run with love and care. I could not keep my hands off the mac and cheese. The jerk pork was spiced just right, and the rice and peas and vegetables were reminiscent of any island grandma's in Brownsville. This place opened up about a year ago. They initially started out very well,however, as time progressed, their service plummeted. They take for ever to complete your order so in turn, they thought that charging the customer rapidly, would lock the customer in to long and unreasonably waiting times. Not to mention, they make lots of mistakes mixing orders up, so before you leave, please confirm that you are being charged for exactly what you ordered. The jerk chicken was ok, too bony, every time I took a bite I had to take tiny bones out of my mouth, it was also very dry and hardly any spice to it, the portions are big though so that was a plus. Their customer service needs improvement, the young kid behind the desk was not friendly at all it was like hurry up and order. Finally! Fantastic Jamaican food! Jerk chicken is the closest to what I've had in Jamaica. The spices slowly grows on you. The oxtail is terrific. It's not the saucy curry buried oxtail of Golden Crust, but slow braised with thick gravy. Ask to have some gravy on your rice and peas! The rice and peas were cooked to perfection. Such a staple, but many places manage to under or over cook. Even though we ordered two patties, I didn't get to try any. My son won't even sacrifice a nimble for taste. The jerk chicken was delicious, spicy but not hot, just enough to liven up the palate and not make you cry. Rice and peas is really rice and beans, and it was seasoned perfectly, the jerk pork was my least favorite, too fatty for my liking. My husband had the curried goat and he loved it. I walked into this little gem on a rainy weekday afternoon. The gentleman at the counter, who i assume was Uncle Don greeted me warmly as I walked in, and I was helped by a young lady who took my order. You know when you go somewhere, and you get a warm feeling, and the people cooking/serving the food genuinely take pride in what they do and want you to wholeheartedly enjoy the food. I ordered the jerk wings, a spicy beef patty, a jerk chicken patty, a jerk chicken entree and a curry goat entree. The portions are fairly large, and you can get lunch special portions for some of their entrees. I enjoyed the rice and peas- they were soft and tasted fresh-some places they serve you old rice with hard peas, but not here. The jerk chicken and sauce was fiery and flavorful. I really enjoyed the curry goat with potatoes in them. The stew it came in was spicy but not overpowering. The beef Pattie's were flaky and delicious. Their pepper sauce was so so good too, it provides a sweet heat. Uncle Don then gave me a pineapple ginger juice on the house and it was so refreshing!!! The food here is average or slightly above. Jerk chicken is dry and not tender and the bbq style sauce on the chicken could be a little overwhelming (Jerk is usually not wet). My brother and I are working in the area and a coworker that lives locally suggested Uncle Dons Kitchen. When we walked in, we were enthusiastically greeted. The place is very clean and well maintained, which is one of the things I'm particular about. Uncle Don appeared from the kitchen and asked if we wanted a sample of the Chefs Special of the day (Pineapple Chicken). 2 forkfuls and I was hooked, so much flavor. I ate half of my platter in my truck before I pulled out of the parking lot. I warmed the rest up after work the next day and it was even better.
