Looked like a cool hole-in-the-wall type of place. I had the Italian beef dipped in jus. I'm sure their are better things on the menu because a lot of people really seem to like this place. The beef in my sandwhich tasted far from fresh. Think within the realm of heavily preserved, no-refrigeration required animal meat that's ready to eat. I've been to Chicago and have a good idea of what Italian beef should taste like and this isn't it. Might go there again for a Chicago dog but staying clear of the Italian beef. Wife and I are visiting from NYC for the first time. We saw a random hole in the wall and seized it as a welcome break from the heat. We ordered Fries, Chicago dog, and Wall Street dog. Delicious! The dogs pop, the buns are firm, one had poppy seeds encrusted...good stuff. In NYC this would be called "artisanal", each hot dog would cost 5x the price, and the lines would be around the block. read more

Every time I come here it's a great experience. Chicago dog is always made to perfection, staff are really kind people, and everything is made fresh. There are a couple of other places down Broadway that claim to be "Chicago style" food and I've tried them all and nothing beats Uncle Frankys!! I've been thinking about Uncle Franky's in Nordeast all week...memories of summer last year when I took my then 2 year old there for a hot dog after a romp in the park nearby. The hot dogs are delicious; the atmosphere is so authentic. Scooby Doo toys line the wall. I don't think you're supposed to play with them, but they let my son anyway. The food itself deserves 5 stars that is why I would return, but the fact of the matter is the service is painfully slow for the sandwiches. If you order separately from the group you are with there is a good chance each person will receive foods in 5-10 minute increments. A few occasions one friend in my group had to wait until everyone else finished eating to receive food. What a hidden gem! We got a restaurant.com for Uncle Franky's and were so pleasantly surprised. The young lady taking orders was very friendly, greeting us, telling us the customer favorites, and answering all our questions. Huge portions. Best part was the custom soda! The cola and root beer here beats out any of the main stream competitors. This dive restaurant completes its charm with Scooby Doo themed goodies all around. My daughter and I were at an appointment downtown and afterwards she requested a good burger at a "joint." Before retiring I had the opportunity to eat almost anywhere in the Twin Cities as my job took me all over. This restaurant certainly qualifies as a joint and the double burger loaded worked for her! I had my old standby, the New York, New York tourist sandwich. Pastrami grilled with onions, kraut, and swiss on rye. Excellent! The atmosphere is kitsch, a little rough around the edges, great blues in the background. Sit at the counter and watch the chef throw out the orders! You are not leaving hungry. It does get busy around lunchtime, so if you are really tight for time there's a McD's just down the street. read more

With Minnesota weather turning more summer-like, my taste buds were hankering for one of my summer guilty-pleasure foods - a delicious hot dog. Now before you reply "delicious hot dog is an oxymoron", let me share more about my visit to Uncle Franky's. I convinced my niece Mandi and nephew Tony to take a break from their daily professional lives and meet me for lunch. Lucky for me, they are adventurous and were willing to try Uncle Franky's. I explained Uncle Franky's is NOT one of the newly renovated buildings in Nordeast Minneapolis but that shouldn't be any reason to shy away. Moreover, to live or work near Uncle Franky's and never try it would be ignoring a local institution in the making. The menu consists of burgers, beef sandwiches, sausages (hot dogs, Polish and brats) and French fries/onion rings and my understanding is influenced by the original owners Chicago upbringing. Food is prepared on a grill or deep fryer so you won't see heart healthy icons on the menu, but the food was not overly greasy. I had a hard time deciding what to pick so I had the Cajun Brat and a Coney Dog. The Cajun had nice spice without over doing the hot. It was topped with Kraut and green relish. The Coney Dog chili sauce was unique in that it wasn't overloaded with tomato sauce. I wouldn't hesitate to have both again. My nephew had the Nordeaster Polish sausage with kraut. Tony's report was "fantastic taste, great snap to the dog, erupting with kraut. Fries were crinkle cut would be better as chilli cheese fries". My niece ordered the Uncle Franky Polish Dog and onion rings. She reported "All good! Although the relish was unnaturally green, which was weird". I should have told her the green is common with a Chicago style dogs. I observed the Chicago style Italian Beef sandwiches. Very generous portions. The Italian Beefs looked awesome. I'm trying one next visit. Our total bill for four sausages and one can of pop was $26 Tim included. The waitress cashier was very friendly and didn't rush us when ordering. Free parking is located on the west side of the building. There is picnic table style behind the building. If you visit on a nice sunny summer day, don't be surprised to find a line at the counter. My nephew pointed out 2-3 craft breweries nearby. Next time I am talking my Uncle Franky's to go and pairing it with a beer. read more

After my last two trips to this establishment, I can no longer support it. I have been getting food from here for years, but seemingly the staff is uninterested in perpetuating repeat business. Recently, I walked in 25 minutes to closing time, and the fellow cooking gave me the coldest, hardest glare I have seen in some time. I turned and left. I do not need that kind of crap from a place where I am about to spend money. The previous time I was in, it was a similar experience with the cook loudly talking with his co worker about some other people that came in near closing time, ordered food (shocking), and did not put anything in the tip jar. Pro tip: closing time is not a half hour before the posted time, and gratuities are for good service, not s#itty attitudes. On top of that, I watched some questionable handling of garbage cans followed by handling of food without hand washing. Not cool. Unfortunately, my work schedule is such, that often I cannot arrive when it is apparently most convenient for the cooks. The food here is actually a little spendy for what it is, and the awful vibe from the cooking staff is just unacceptable. I am done with these guys. There are 2 Portillo's locations in town now, if I need to scratch the itch for Chicago style junk food, and I suspect they have some standards for service in place. read more

Yelp states the 2 stars represents 'Meh, I've experienced better' and that is the case here. My dog with the works tasted good, but the texture of the bun was 'off'. I have to question if it was an actual Rosens bun, as the texture was that far off. We've all had buns that weren't properly steamed, but the texture of the bun was sort of styrofoamish. Strange, right?? Also, this bun looked as if it were hand sliced? The opening where the dog resided was a straight, single knife cut and not the typical 'rough' bun opening. Again, I'm not sure what the story was, but in my decades of eating Chicago dogs I've never come across such a bun. As far as the condiments, temperature and flavors it was pretty spot on. It's just hard getting past such a strange bun. So yeah 2 stars as 'Meh, I've experienced better'. Of course I had to have the combo while I was there and there were some flaws with that as well. 1. I asked for a wet combo - even going so far as asking the guy who made it if it was wet (to which he replied it was). Nope, just the bottom of the bun was wet and the rest was dry and chewy. 2. The Italian sausage wasn't grilled, but appeared to be boiled. 3. The Italian sausage wasn't a single piece, but a couple of pieces of somewhat strange shapes. I couldn't tell if it had been cut in half lengthwise, or what but it wasn't a single complete Italian sausage. 4. The beef itself was tough....tough to the point of being hard and dry. I was there on the early side, so was this left over from the night before, I don't know. But what I do know is that something was off. 5. The flavors were good and I powered my way through it because.....well just because. Summary - I don't see Uncle Franky's making it in Chitown where there are too many good dog joints to go to. read more

I was disappointed because I read all the reviews and I had somewhat high expectations of this place. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing here. I ordered the Classic Chicago Beef. The beef had hardly any flavor and even though it was dipped in aus jus I could tell that the beef had been sitting out for a while. I took one bite and that was it. I hate to say this, but Arby s beef was better, more flavorful, more fresh than this. They need to make sure they put times on the beef or any other food product so they know when to chuck them out and make more. That was the only thing. My husband and his mother loved their Chicago dogs and perhaps that is what I should have tried. So if you are going to eat here make sure you order the dogs. read more

Surprisingly clean with friendly staff on the inside. Sometimes I am nervous about these divey- hole in the wall places because sometimes you get the side-eye from regulars and aloof customer service. Exact opposite here! Was greeted as soon as I walked in the door. Is it weird I don't expect stuff like that anymore? But I digress. There is seating at the grill & high tables inside, as well as several picnic tables in the parking lot outside. I got a Chicago dog and some fried pickles to go for $9. The craft sodas looked intriguing but I had some beer waiting for me at home. The very nice lady who took my order offered me water while I waited for my food to cook. I was very happy with the portion sizes for the price, as well as the taste! I liked the fried pickles better than the ones I've had at the state fair. I live only a couple blocks away so I will be back. I think it would be a great place to get take-out to bring to one of the local taprooms, or to grab a quick meal while out in the area with family and friends. read more
