This little restaurant is under new ownership and staff is friendly and eager to please. They are now open for dinner but the exterior of the building is so poorly lit that I don't think very many people know that. When we visited for dinner several weeks ago, I had the chicken parmesan with a salad. Salad was fine, my chicken was an actual breaded chicken breast not a frozen patty and the spaghetti portion was quite generous. Today we went for breakfast and my husband had eggs, sausage and pancakes, he said his sausage was especially good. I had a Mexican Skillet which was chorizo and vegetables on top of hash browns with eggs on top of that oh, it was very good! Pancakes are fine, I think my hubby like them a little better than I did but the syrup comes to the table warmed up which is a nice touch. If you go there for breakfast, and it's a sunny day, expect the interior of the restaurant to be warm as the building faces East oh, we did not have that issue in the evening. Visited on November 5 due to location and Yelp reviews. Not much ambiance to speak of. We were told the wait would be 30 minutes but was much faster which was appreciated. Waitress was nice and pretty quickly took our order. We waited at least 20 minutes for our food which seems a bit long for short order. For food was very good though. We ordered Italian sausage skillet was was tasty, Chef's omelet also good, and a basic 2 egg and bacon dish. Excellent thick cut bacon was the highlight here, hash brown were also nicely crispy. The food here was good but not great. The service was a little slow. It felt like the lady was a little overwhelmed. They have a partition between the dining room and the cooking area so for all of know she was in charge of making the food too. Honestly, the main reason I wanted to come here was because of the name. There is a negative connotation with the term "Uncle Tom." I was wondering what kind of place would have that in the name. I've been here more than 3 times. I just get distracted by my excitement to eat the food and then suddenly I'm home and full. The waffles are delicious and quite large. My Mr loves them and gets one or two every time we visit. I've tried several other things on the menu. Well, okay... Truthfully, sometimes the food is hit or miss depending on the cooks. Sometimes my eggs are gooey, sometimes they're perfect. Sometimes my hash browns are over cooked and other times they're perfect. But I think my personal favorite is the chicken tenders. They have a great flavor on their own. The service is probably the best part. It's basically family that runs the joint. The mom and son own the place. Their Greek? conversations rolling through the restaurant. All the waitresses are so sweet. They remember us every time and don't even bother asking if coffee is necessary. (it is). What to say about Uncle Tom's Pancake House... What to say? It's a diner, through and through. It's unpretentious. It's old-fashioned. It's out of date. The food is decent; not great, but consistent. And the place rules. I don't know about you, but this is exactly what I want in a diner. Inexpensive, consistent food. The waffles and pancakes are surprisingly delicious. I concur completely with Zach's review - this place is unpretentious, inexpensive, and the food is darn good, you just have to know what to expect. This place is a diner - there is no ambiance, and the service is efficient. The food is basic, but really good basic. The pancakes are the best plain pancakes I have ever had, fluffy, flavorful, and not too heavy. Their hash browns are also very good. It serves breakfast and lunch, though I have only been for breakfast, the lunch menu (salads, wraps, burgers, a few full meals) looks good. The prices are great - about $6 per person for breakfast, $7 per person for lunch. read more

Very basic, old-school American diner. Better than Denny's but don't go here expecting anything fancy. Farmer Brothers or Folger's coffee kinda place. I have no complaints. This is your grandparent's diner. I was also a little turned off by the way they tore out the bar and put up a partition so you can't see what's going on in the kitchen. Cute little mom and pop dinner in Normal, IL. For being located next door to a stake and shake and a Denny's the location is very busy, which speaks highly of the restaurant. They were all the exact same size too which leads me to believe they were machine portioned. --The eggs and toast were, well, eggs and toast. --The fresh fruit really was fresh, not dried at the edges of the cantaloupe and the strawberries were still firm. Very tasty fruit. Over all everything was good but I was very disappointed in the pancakes. If you call your self a pancake house I would expect better pancakes. One of the best breakfasts in Normal, well probably the best. When living in IL this was my post bike ride plurge. Totally agree with the folks that call this a Folgers kinda place or Grandma and Grandpa's type of diner. Definitely a throw back. So if that is your thing this is the place! We had breakfast and the food was quite good and fair priced. The difference between a 3 and a 5 in here was service. This is not that big of a place. But I don't know if they had to get the eggs directly from the Chickens or what, but it took forever to get the food. Every time I head back to Bloomington I make sure to hit up Uncle Tom's. It's the only acceptable place to eat breakfast in Blono that isn't a chain! Small, and usually a wait on a busy Saturday morning, but they get you in as soon as possible...and I swear if you're polite they get you in even quicker! The coffee was pretty average, hash browns quite good, vegetable omelet was decent but lacked broccoli, and the wheat toast was the kind that looks like white toast with brown food coloring added.
