As others have mentioned, this super cute local coffee shop boasts an impressive array of baked goods of all kinds. I held back and only sampled the zucchini bread but it was pretty damn perfect. I ordered a specialty latte of sorts with coconut milk, agave and some other magic, and it was smooth, fragrant and nicely balanced. Wandered in here seeking shelter from Michigan's bipolar tumultuous weather (it had been sunny, then it poured, then the sun made a reappearance and then the wind started blowing like a tornado's eye was about to form). The red and white checkered floor and all-wood furnishings give this café a warm, welcoming feel - as does the smell of fresh brewed coffee. I ordered the mocha and the gluten free chocolate cake. Loved the latter! The mocha had an AMAZING flavour, but it wasn't smooth. It had a sort of gritty texture, which I can't exactly put in words. I love my city life, you know but sometimes when I get away from it all and find little gems like this one - I think that maybe.... Uncommon Grounds is an institution. Their coffee is distributed in many places in Chicago, and rightly so because it is DAMN delicious. I didn't get any pastries this time because we were about to have dinner but the mocha chocolate pecan muffin, the brownie on a stick and the chocolate banana cheesecake were calling my name. .....Aurore....... (and believe it or not - they were saying it just right. Pastries are highly trained in French, that is a prerequisite) I chose a regular iced latte and my sweetie opted for a French Guyana iced moka (with cayenne). And since we had the most beautiful Michigan night we opted to sip our drinks in the cute little garden in the back, complete with herbs, wild tomato plants, an enclosed little retreat where dogs are not allowed and adorable chairs. I spent a dreamy 40-minute or so just enjoying life and wishing for many more. Without the Internet but you can do it with it: it's free. read more

I've given this coffee shop multiple chances since it's the most popular coffee shop in Saugutuck, and I love how it looks and the cozy, friendly atmosphere. However, every time I get a latte here- it SUCKS! I got a PSL here and it was powdery and weird and idk wtf they were thinking. I saw the guy making it behind the counter and thought it looked weird (he didn't even froth the milk. It's a latte dude). I had one sip and automatically said "this sucks." I'm not a coffee snob- I drink gas station coffee and enjoy it much more than anything I've ordered here. Maybe this place is better for a plain cup of black coffee and nothing else. The coffee is good, not amazing, but good. I've never tried any food items here. My main reason for writing a review and giving it a 1 out of 5 is the incredibly RUDE man who "took my order". Apparently he is always here, so I'm not sure if he could possibly be a manager or owner or something. He is incredibly short with people, rushes you along, doesn't answer questions, doesn't offer explanations or elaborate what might be in 'this' drink or 'that' drink. Honestly just treated me like an afterthought and made me never want to go back. In fact, I last visited this coffee shop nearly a month ago and I'm still bothered by how he treated me. Luckily, things like this usually end up working themselves out. If he's an asshole to nice, paying customers eventually either he will be fired/quit/go out of business. This is my favorite coffee house and wish I lived in Saugatuck so I could go as often as I wanted to. They roast their own beans in-house so the coffee is fresh and oh-so flavorful. They always have a great sampling of baked goods (the scones are to die for!) I love the whole vibe; it's a small house and so cozy and comfortable, and the staff are so nice & helpful-just really amazing people. Congratulations, Saugatuckians! I hope you realize how lucky you are to have such a fabulous coffee house in your midst - not only cozy, comfortable and serving fantastic coffees and delicious homemade food items but staying OPEN till 10 and 11 pm. We here in Mayor DaleyLand can barely find any coffee house open past 6/7/8 pm. If I sound frustrated and jealous, well, I AM. ;-) We tried the Brazil Poco Fundo (Fair Trade/Organic) - "medium acidity: subtle: fruity" - and it was wonderful and exactly what we needed. We also munched on a walnut cranberry orange scone and the crustless "Easy Bake" - eggs, cheddar, broccoli, kind of like a frittata. Both were excellent, however, my personal favorite (and something I cannot stop thinking about!) was the mocha chocolate pecan muffin. Ooooo la la! Heart palpitations galore! Please continue making this treat till I can make it back. Overall, great atmosphere, friendly staff, good food, fabulous coffee! Went here with a friend to get some coffee and to try something new. To start the place looks like someone's house and it is very inviting and comfortable environment once you walk in. Once inside you will see this medium sized counter where they have these boards on the top containing all of their menu items. I ordered something strong and the cashier said the House blend with extra espresso shots. I said that sounds great but it didn't feel as if he had sold me on the idea. He seemed like he just wanted to leave for some reason. He gave off the vibe that he did not enjoy working there and aimed to do other things with his time other than making customers coffee. I also ordered a Cranberry+Orange scone which was rather deliciously. Hard on the outside but still soft and moist on the inside. Cranberry and orange together surprisingly made a good combination. The coffee was pretty good and strong that it woke me up right away. I would have to say that this place is in comparison to Starbucks but a lot cheaper. That statement is not a bad thing but this place is good for a quick coffee and pastry. read more

This place was awesome. The coffee was great and the food was excellent. I had some kind of curry chicken salad sandwich, which was delicious. The coffee was the first good coffee I'd had in a while. If you've followed my reviews, you would know I have been despairing of the lack of good coffee shops in NW Indiana and the fact that you have to drive to Michigan or Chicago to get decent coffee is offensive to me as a human being. But I digress... I always order a plain latte the first time I go into any coffee shop. It's my little evil test. If a place can't get the basics right, then I can tell that they're absolutely going to murder my usual drink with copious amounts of disgusting sugar. But this place? I went o Saugatuck for a long weekend with my family thanks to a book that talks about great one day road trips from Chicago. So we packed up the car and drove to Saugatuck. Our first morning in Saugatuck, we headed off to Uncommon Grounds. Who would have known that Saugatuck was the home of a Seattle quality coffee shop?! The coffee was great. It is also cool seeing the roaster. I tried the malted mocha which according to our guide book is the only one of its kind. It was worth trying it once after trying it once I stuck with an Americano. The home made baked goods were great. As a fan of chocolate and peanut butter you can't go wrong with the chocolate chip and peanut butter muffin...so good. The scones were also good. I also tried the Mexican Egg Sandwich which was nice and had a little kick to it which I enjoyed. I'm going to try to make my own version in the future when I'm far away from Saugatuck. I am glad my sister picked up a bag of the Ravenswood blend (named after our Chicago neighborhood). I cannot wait to drink it and think of Saugatuck. read more

Only had a cup of the brew of the day (Ethiopian) and my wife one coconut-something-else-it's-candy-not-coffee drink. She loved hers, I thought mine was ok, definitely not even close to Intelligentsia in Chicago. The place itself was really nice with decent-sized tables (could be used for studying), outdoor seating, newspapers and magazines, but only one toilet (which was constantly busy so cannot be reviewed here, apologies). Would definitely go back if in the area. EDIT: Just received a note through Yelp from the owner, doing a great job of explaining why the brew hadn't been the best and apologising for it. If you get a drink to stay, they still serve it in *real* mugs or glasses! Apparently they actually go down to South America themselves to work with small, independent coffee farmers. While sitting at a table, sometimes the line would get long but the ladies that work there seem to bust through it fairly quickly. And really, the wait is worth it. One of the best espresso, and cold brew coffee shops I have ever been too. The pure quality is unparalleled. Coffee shop rankings tend to get distorted by other factors like pastries, the hipster factor, organic-ness, etc. I'm sure Uncommon Ground is fine on all of these areas, but if you are talking pure coffee and espresso, I would say this place could do pretty well in a taste test against anyone in the world. Espresso is supposed to have a milky beige froth when served, which has kind of been lost with all of those automated espresso machines. No matter what time of day I've walked into Uncommon, I've waited a relative long time for coffee and/or food. I almost wish they would scale back the food selections to less labor intensive ones during busy periods like breakfast and lunch. Either that or hire more staff to accommodate the demand.
