Seeing this new spot open on the weekend, we had to stop in on Sunday for some breakfast. Also, I should note, I have been waiting and waiting for the Roots on Whyte building to start coming to life. It looks the "Wheel" is going to be a good place for sandwiches, snacks, coffee (certainly until the new Da Capo opens in the same building), and lingering. (Laptop note: lots of open outlets spotted around the room.) My wife had a generous apple crisp crepe, with granola providing the crunch inside the powdered sugar covered crepe. I went for the Croquet Monsieur, which tossed an egg on top of the ham and cheese sandwich. A nice bechamel added some flavour to the gruyere and ham mix. The bread was big and thick. My only complaint, really, is that the bread was so big that there could have been a little more in the sandwich, the ham got a bit lost. I was here for brunch on Christmas Eve with my lunch date and It was not my first choice to go as I had bad experience about a year ago with this place. I decided to give it another try and I am sure glad I did. I ordered the traditional breakfast with two fried free-range eggs, cranberry maple sausage, herb roasted potatoes and toast as I thought they can't screw this up. I actually really enjoyed the flavorful sausage (I asked for it butterflied). My date had their special of the day which was a pulled pork breakfast and he loved it. It was molasses bbq pulled pork with poached eggs and arugula and hollandaise sauce on a cheddar biscuit. also had a bite and it was very tasty indeed and I secretly wished I ordered it as well. My favorite was the Americano misto that was made by daCapo. I love how attentive our server was especially working on Christmas eve. She had smiles all around and it made my experience that much better. Glad I gave this place another chance. read more

Really yummy food! My portabella mushroom burger was delectable, as were the accompanying sides (Vietnamese-inspired slaw and roasted hash browns). This place prides itself on using only locally sourced and seasonal ingredients which translate into delicious and expensive. (My burger was $17.) Service was rather slow -- we waited for at least 30 minutes for our lunches -- but pleasant. The interior is lovely and trendy: lots of wood and windows. This was the first time I went for dinner at Under the High Wheel and I am thoroughly impressed!! Their menu is nice and short and every single small and large plate item sounded wonderful. For appetizers, I ordered the Scallops and Halloumi salad. The presentation is phenomenal and the ingredients are high quality. The scallops arrived in a bowl of flavouful pea and mint puree, topped with some greens and tomatoes. I swear I was eating spoonfuls of puree at the end because it was just THAT GOOD! the Halloumi cheese was nice and chewy and was paired with endive, squash and leek vinaigrette, again super delicious. After changing my mind 5 times, I am glad I chose the pan seared tuna as my entrée because it is one of the best tuna meals I have had (photo attached!). Edmonton maybe hundreds of miles away from the ocean but that tuna was fresh and perfectly seared. It was served with spaghetti in wine butter sauce and some cooked greens. The overall balance of flavours and textures was very satisfying. Ofcourse i had to try their dessert as well and chose to order the pecan pie. Again I am super impressed with the presentation as a perfect square of pecan pie was served with a perfectly shaped 'quenelle' of whipped cream and some strawberries and syrup in the side. Obviously the flavour was on point. Almost forgot to mention, it was Wednesday when I went so it was half price for a bottle of wine! We ordered the Ned Sauv Blanc from NZ and it was great as well. Visited UtHW at the invitation of a fellow Yelper yesterday. In fact, I might never have known it was there had she not insisted it was--it more or less shares space with Da Capo in the Roots on Whyte building. It was a great spot for our afternoon conversation, and I spied quite a few people with laptops and e-readers. It's not loud, but not quiet, either. As we met up mid-afternoon, I didn't have much of an opportunity to sample the menu, though I did order a pot of tea and have a delicious date square from the pastry case (warmed up and brought to our table by our server, who added a generous dollop of whipped cream, a fan of sliced strawberries, and dressed the whole thing up with a dusting of powdered sugar and a mint leaf!). I also loved the bottle of water left on our table--I hate waiting for refills, and I drink water like a fish. I will most certainly return to try a full meal, and it's inspired me to start a list of great places to study and/or catch up with a friend! read more

Back again to visit grandson and those responsible for this bundle of joy on earth. We pretty much b-lined from airport to Under the High Wheel for lunch. My grandson being only 10 weeks old ordered nothing. Me? I ordered the steak sandwich and was quite happy with the flavor of the meat, plating of the food and horseradish mayonnaise suggested by our lovely server. This time out the wait between order and food arriving table was a bit too long albeit 45 minutes. I'm not sure who - front of house team or kitchen - was responsible for the wait but it doesn't much matter. It's simply not on. And so I'll recommend the food and suggest that said food is by the skin of my teeth worth the wait but keep my rating at 3-stars for lack of a well-rounded experience. read more

This is a great little place that I was lucky enough to find parking around... a restaurant duo-ed with Da Capo. The two are so connected that I initially thought they were both one. I'll admit it's a bit confusing when you first walk in the front door (where do I go, what do I do, how do I get a coffee, how do I get a meal). But once you get this figured out, it's a great place for vegans, glutinos, and others with allergies to kick back, relax, and enjoy a positive vibe and good meal. The gf buckwheat pancakes are monstrously large and served with a salad (Californian style). It's a great place to work and my soy latte gave enough kick to fuel a rapid "presentation deck frenzy" that produced several decks for a week of workshops. read more

I've now been here three times and feel well equipped to give a good review. I visited here on August 20th for some brunch. This little treasure his hidden in between a market and coffee shop, nice and out in the open, the atmosphere is my favourite. The place was buzzing with people when I showed up. I waited less than a few minutes for someone to seat us. The food was great and moderately priced, two breakfast dishes ranged from $16-$19 a plate, which were shared. The waitress was super friendly and provided everything we needed for a nice Sunday brunch. There is a patio but it was a bit cold out so we opted for inside. They did warn us that because it was so busy food was expected to take up to 25 minutes, thankfully it arrived well before that. I did appreciate the heads up though. This place is suitable for kids, be warned though the crowd was mostly singles/couples/friends. This place def doesn't disappoint. read more

Food is mediocre - the only upside is the presentation perhaps? The main problem is the staff. The waitress showed a little bit of arrogance from the beginning. We wanted to sit beside each other and since the place was quite empty we gently asked whether we could sit in a table for four. Her answer was a firm no but eventually agreed very reluctantly. We order the bbq chicken waffle. When we cut it, there was some blood around the bone and the meat was clearly underdone. I pointed it to the waitress which she called the chef. The chef came saying that he cooked the chicken ahead of time then put the meat on grill before plating. The blood came from inside of the bone not the meat itself being raw. In my opinion blood is blood and I don't like my chicken pink. However I said to the chef that I feel uncomfortable seeing blood in my chicken and he just took the plate back without a word. I had relatively low expectations coming here, because I read the reviews beforehand. I would have likely chosen another place for brunch had I not been invited by a friend. I was pleasantly surprised. Looking at the reviews, I'm going to guess that they either have a high turnover rate or management is lacking. There is so much inconsistency in customer's experiences, and I wouldn't know how else that could be accounted for. That said, I feel very lucky that my experience was as fantastic as it was. I had the chicken and waffle. I can't recall if this was what it was called on the menu. It wouldn't be considered the authentic Southern-style dish, but it was just as much--if not more--enjoyable. The chicken was juicy with a very nice crumb exterior, and the waffles had a delicate, perfectly balancing flavor. The accompanying hollandaise (at least this is the sauce I remember, but I tend to order this for side dishes sometimes, too) was really nice and certainly not generic tasting. I think what a lot of otherwise good dishes can sometimes lack is a balance of textures. As one of those 'texture people,' I was thoroughly satisfied. I don't remember the service too much, which might be a good thing. I don't like in-your-face service. The least amount of attention while still meeting the typical expectations of good service is what I like. While I would say the prices were a little high for brunch, I wouldn't flinch if the experience was consistently as good as mine was every time. Looking forward to another visit. read more

We had a bit of a middle of the road experience here. The food was a solid 4; not my favourite breakfast but not bad to be sure. The reason the experience felt negative was mostly based on service. At first we couldn't find the entrance because the sign said they were closed. Turned out they had just forgotten. It's a small thing but it was disorienting for sure. Next the wait-staff only refilled our coffee once, and only after I caught their attention. It felt like they knew we wanted their attention but were avoiding our eye contact. I actually wondered at first if they did refill their coffees given they didn't walk around with a pot of coffee for anyone that morning, until after we requested it. The timeline for our food was pretty miserable as well. We waited for 55minutes before our plates arrived. Given, the food was extremely well plated and seemed to have been well prepared. I think the wait time would have been less odd had we at least had our coffee refilled a couple of times while we chatted and absorbed the incredible atmosphere! Speaking of which, the atmosphere and optics of everything was very nice. Huge bay windows let in tons of natural and pleasant light. They have Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and delightful wall decorations. Even the food is well plated and incredibly visually pleasing; though slightly bland and underwhelming once we began eating. In short, it feels like the perfect place for an instagram influencer to go snap a photo of the delicious breakfast they're about to eat. This is a cute little cafe on Whyte - in that same building as the health food store/grocery. We went there on a day off in the summer and it wasn't busy - but the sign stating that 'cause it gets busy, you can only sit if having a meal....I guess no loitering with a coffee here! There were no spices, and only a splash of sauce otherwise it was just fried veggies in a plain buckwheat crepe. Not good enough. I went there today with my brother and his wife, as I had heard good things. I ordered the BLT based on Yelp reviews, and I have to say it was delicious. BUT the sandwich was cut in such a bizarre way that I had two long, narrow, elongated halves, and everything pretty much fell out when I tried pick it up. Amazing taste, really stupid presentation. My brother had the traditional breakfast, and he said it was very good except for the potatoes which were only so-so. My SIL ordered the Big Wheel quesadilla which is made with white bean and pumpkin seed pesto. TBH she didn't like it that much, but I tried it and liked it enough to take her leftovers home with me, so YMMV. This place is amazing. We got there around 1pm on a Sunday and the wait was only about 10min. We had a nice bar area to sit in so it wasn't too bad. Our server was always smiling and delightful. You could tell she loved working there. The menu is simple and well laid out, heavy weighted paper on clipboards. Great touch! Everything is sourced locally and care is taken when handling food allergies. I had the Waffles with poached eggs and smoked salmon. The Hollandaise sauce was good. It's a bit pricey as with coffees and desserts, four of us spent about $150 with a 15% tip and tax included. I would go back for sure but only on occasion as it's quite expensive. Came here for brunch, and it's a really great place, the service was great and the food was very good. We were a large party, and they accommodated us wonderfully. However, it's important to inform anybody with celiac disease: While they do have "gluten free" options on the menu, everything is cooked on the same grill, using the same utensils, so a gluten free crepe will be cross contaminated. My partner was limited to ordering the soup, which was delivered with gluten free toast that was also toasted on the same grill as everything else, so we had to return the toast. The staff was effusive in their apologies, and I believe they actually comped us the soup. Everything else about the experience was good. This is just a warning for people who may have celiac, or have friends with celiac. This will not be a good option for you. read more

I got the savory waffle which is a waffle topped with smoked salmon and eggs benedict along with a side of salad and fresh fruit. It was delicious!! Really great presentation of the food on the plate and good service as well. It was $18.95 so a bit on the pricy side for breakfast foods but the food was really fresh so I would say its worth it. The coffee drinks are made at the coffee shop right next door, de capo, which is one of my favourite coffee shops with a great choice of drinks. Brought my boyfriend here for his first time dining here and we both thoroughly enjoyed the food - we shared the traditional breakfast which was plenty for two people! Also couldn't resist ordering a glass of fresh squeezed OJ and OMG it was sooooo sooo yummy! Perfectly pulpy & sweet! The server was decent. On our constant search for new brunch spots, Allan G and I decided to try a new spot today. Well, not new exactly, but new for us. Not sure what took us so long, but I'm wondering if they've recently updated the breakfast menu. When I first looked at it when they opened, it didn't appeal to me much-- I have no desire to eat salad for brunch. But with their recent listing in Avenue as 2nd best brunch spot in town, I looked again, and noticed the waffles and crepes and other yummies, so we decided it was time. I was unimpressed with the seating options-- those silver metal chairs with not a lot of support and a pew style bench-- also not super comfortable. The decor was fun and interesting. But comfort counts for a lot. I was also kind of miffed that we were seated right next to a large group of six, even though there were other free tables not as close to them. But I guess since those were 4-seaters and there were only 2 of us, it was practicality. Still, we were there right when they opened, and didn't plan on lingering. The group was pretty loud, so that sort of bummed us out initially. Allan G had the regular coffee (served with little mini milk bottle of cream. How cute is that?) and the Traditional breakfast-- eggs, sausage, toast, and a side of fruit. He proclaimed it satisfactory. In one of my sweet-craving moods, I had the latte with multiple spoonfuls of the dark brown sugar kept in a jar on the table. Good latte, but my only complaint is that with the tall glasses, it makes it far more difficult to drink while the drink is still hot. You burn your fingers. Might want to consider Irish coffee mugs or something a little easier to hold. My entree, the chocolate hazelnut crepes, were to die for. Crepes with a handmade chocolate-coffee flavored sauce, garnished with hazelnuts and fruit. I also got a side of the sausage. Yummy, with a little maple flavor. The crepes were delicious. I give extra points for the fruit being multiple types of berries, orange, and apple. SO refreshing that it wasn't melon, which I hate! Props for that. I'm subtracting a point for the sitting us so close to the group. Especially since one of the loudmouths seemed intent on talking about the poop/diapering habits of her child, which I SO want to hear about while I eat. Seriously, honey? Nobody gives a %^& about your kid's %^&. We're an in and out sort of dining couple. You can sit us further away, even if we take up more than 2 seats. We won't stay long. read more

This is one of my favourite restaurants in the city and hands down mine and my husband"s favourite brunch place. We've only been once for dinner and enjoyed that as well. There's typically a bit of a wait to get in as they don't take reservations and its usually a bit louder in there than we prefer but the food is incredible! Under the High Wheel isn't somewhere you choose to eat because of novelty or gimmicks - it's simply a diner that serves excellent comfort food. Pure and simple. The interior is informal and relaxed, with wood accents, mason jars filled with delicious brown sugar, and paper napkin-wrapped cutlery. The staff are friendly and familiar, greeting customers with a smile, clearing tables with a sense of efficiency and courtesy, and ensuring that your visit is peppered with hospitable requests for 'anything else?' The food, as I mentioned, was delightful. Freshly-made, creamy lattes made at Da Capo next door are served in tall glasses; the brown sugar gives them a lovely sweetness. The bangers and mash - a heaping helping of cranberry maple sausages, mashed potatoes, two fried eggs, and caramelized onions - was topped with the richest, heartiest gravy you could ever imagine. I couldn't dip my sausages or whipped mash into this concoction nearly often enough; it strongly reminded me of an old-fashioned, beefy English gravy. It had mounds and mounds of flavour. My dining companion dug into the croque monsieur, a sandwich filled with house-roasted pork loin, caramelized apples, provolone, and béchamel, and served with house greens and toasted sunflower seeds. The only downfall to this lovely lunch was the food wait times, which took quite a bit longer than expected. Prices are good; at under $20 per person for a lunch or dinner plate, two can dine for about $50 (excluding alcohol). As with most Whyte Avenue businesses, though, parking can be an issue. There are a few spots down the side of the building, but be prepared for a few extra minutes of playing 'Where to Park' when you visit this restaurant. Brunch, lunch, or dinner, Under the High Wheel delivers hearty, tasty meals in a very unpretentious setting.
