This place is already on thin ice because of the absurd prices for adding simple veggies and soft boiled eggs to your ramen bowl. Whatever, I pay the price and ask for a soft hard boiled egg... and the waiter comes out with my ramen bowl with a HALF of a soft boiled egg. And this half was so tiny, it was pathetic!! A $15 ramen bowl with an extra $2 dollars for HALF of a soft boiled egg!! Absolutely insane, maybe I'm crazy for thinking this but on the menu it doesn't specify that I'm getting half of what I ordered. Really disappointed. read more

Underbelly never disappoints. We been coming here for years and every time I can confirm they make the best ramen in SD. Belly of the beast is so good, especially with the oxtail dumplings. They have a great drinks selection, especially if you like Japanese whiskey. The outdoor space is also such a vibe, with a beautiful bar and fire place. This ramen spot is great. You order at the counter up front then sit down. There is bar and outdoor seating, I love the outdoor seating though there were flies buzzing around. They have little fans out there to try and help manage the flies though. Menu has a nice variety. You can add a bunch of customizations to your ramen. I though the egg wasn't very worth it though, it didn't really have any flavoring or seasoning and it was just a hard boiled egg. I totally understand now why Underbelly is on so many lists of best food places in SD! We finally were able to grab lunch this past weekend when it wasn't too busy. Decided to indulge in a couple of cocktails which were so refreshing since it was humid and hot before the storm rolled in. I ordered the Calpikachu and added boba--SO YUM! You wouldn't even know there was alcohol in it, it was just like a fruit smoothie. My partner sipped on the Pink Momonga which was also pretty tasty but I felt the lychee liquor flavor was strong, so not quite my cup of tea although it was an interesting twist on a boba drink. I am still dreaming about the food. I went with the Meat Eaters Bento Box which I was hesitant at first since Underbelly is known for its ramen, but like I said, it was HOT so I was not in the mood for ramen. I loved the spread. BEST kimchi I've ever had. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing. The gyoza were beyond succulent! And of course, the pork belly was so tender and juicy. Also the absolute best ramen I've ever had! My partner ordered the Underbelly Ramen which had pork belly and pork adobado--HEAVENLY! The broth was next level creamy, the noodles tasted freshly made, the meat melted in my mouth. I'm telling you it's going to be a hard decision on what to order our next time back because of course I want to try everything else on their menu, but the ramen and bento box were so incredible, I want them again and again and again! The meat was very chewy and bland in the inside, compared to other ramen joints it seemed very low quality food product and consistently. I've visited this place three times, twice for lunch and once for dinner. The food is average, I suppose. It's not bad, but it's not exceptional either. You order at the counter and are immediately asked to pay and if you'd like to tip. Then, you're seated in an uncomfortable chair with a sticky table. You have to get your own water, and if you want sparkling water, it doesn't work. You grab one of their cups, which are not very clean, and wait for a few mediocre plates of food. The ramen is bland, and they don't have karaage on the menu, so you get some dark meat chicken nuggets covered in a strange, spicy sauce. Alternatively, you can try the buns with cold pork meat, but I'm not sure if you would like that either. The bar has sci-fi toys displayed for decoration, and they're dusty. This place is low key filthy. It's better to come at night because you wont notice. When you leave, a friendly voice will come from nowhere and thank you for coming. So, why did I come here three times? I genuinely wanted to like this place. My wife insisted we try again. But every time you visit, you start to realize that your money is better spent on good food, good service, and a clean, friendly atmosphere. This place falls short of those expectations. I have driven by many times but it's always crowded. It was the start of the four day weekend and we were headed to the Blue, but our friends got their early and said it was a little douchy so they said to meet them here. I don't live that far away and walked. The patio is kinda small, so I can see why there's a line when they're crowded. We sat at a communal table near the entrance cause we had a dog with us. Help yourself to water bottles for the table. I ordered the Underbelly Bowl and a sake to share. The pulled pork was tender and the pork belly delicious, but the ramen was overcooked and that's half the bowl! I did like the broth and the egg was cooked perfectly. The fried chicken was decent and I dunked it in my broth. My Asian friends said I was whitewashed with all the ramen places around. But I had never tried UB and wanted to, and besides, how do you know if you like something or not unless you try it. Right? I will definitely be back to explore the menu more. All seating is first come first serve & communal so it's best for someone to stay in line and another to find a place to sit. First impression from ordering is the staff is so welcoming and helpful. Service is top notch here! From the moment I walked in to the food being delivered and the removal of my cleaned plates, they're quick and great! I especially love the self service water station that has ice cold sparkling or still water options. The shaded outdoor patio is perfect for lunch or a quick bite and drinks. They have great music playing and it's a nice chill vibe here. Special shoutout to Peter who was so quick and attentive when I shared that the restroom was out of soap, other establishments say thanks and don't get to fixing that kind of thing right away but not here, Peter jetted off to remedy it and everything was good. Going to survey 84 minutes surgery so I was going to stock up and eat the two little appetizers first and save the Roman for the next day. Bottom line the only thing I like for the little corn dogs. The bahn mi was supposed to be chicken but it didn't look like chicken and it was like chewing on cardboard. I threw it out literally afraid to eat it and the one bite I had was not good I wasn't even going to feed it to my dog who wanted it. The next day finally got my appetite and I deleted the broth added to the ramen and it was just not that great super salty I had to throw some momofuku crunch and sojo to it that didn't help then some bean sprouts and cilantro that didn't help. Yes you guys, the line in the rain is worth standing in! Everything was outrageously delicious and the service was transactionally decent-- which I totally don't hate! I'd rather have an everyday exchange than deal with a cartoon presence or someone that reeks of hatred, so no harm, no foul. I ordered garlic edamame, the hard light cocktail, and curry ramen. Every single thing was delicious. I was expecting your basic garlic edamame but this batch knocked it way out with a signature spiciness that made my inner home chef raise an eyebrow way high in amazement. No joke, it was actually spicy! You'll be in pleasurable pain. Like, you may need to slurp a sweet cocktail to help relieve yourself between bites. It was great! My cocktail (the hard light) was also great. It wasn't too sweet so I didn't feel gross about keeping the rounds coming. It had just enough flavor to mask the alcohol but it wasn't overboard to the extent where I'd rather have a plain vodka soda. The curry ramen was delicious too. I just wish I had explored all the spices on the spice tray but I wanted to explore my entree as intended. And truth be told, it was tasty as it was. This place has such a modern and aesthetic vibe to it. The service was excellent from start to finish. You order your food first and then get seated. The little italy location looks a little cooler because of the lights but this place isnt too far behind. I got the spicy chicken boas and those were pretty good. Not spicy at all. But flavorful! I have had their vegan ramen in the past and that was underwhelming so i passed on the ramen this time around. Their chicken karaage is crunchy and flavorful, cant go wrong there. Damn guys. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it was not worth the hype. Let me break it down for y'all. This place is ALWAYS busy. So never went because of that. Got here at 1 on a Friday to try and miss the peak hours. Gyoza: this was the best thing we had and even so it was sadly just okay. The sauce made it better but that was the overwhelming arc throughout the experience. The sauces gave things flavor the food itself didn't. Drowned everything in the sauces to compensate. Chicken Karaage: this tasted like a meal prep meal. In other words bland carb and bland chicken cause you wanna get fit. Had to dunk a lot of sauce on this but even so this felt like a meal I had to force myself to eat to be healthy. Tonkotsu ramen: the broth really let me down. It was hella bland and the pork belly had no flavor as well. It was odd cause they were great cuts but lacked substance. Soba noodles cooked well but other than that was just bland overall. Didn't even wanna finish the broth which is arguably the best part. Unfortunately everyone that worked here made you feel like an inconvenience. Bummer. Outdoor seating. Thankfully they have lots of heaters. You order at the front and then sit down. Parking is street and slightly annoying but there's always a spot in the residential area a few blocks away. If I could give 3.5 I would. The food was 5/5 and tasted amazing. Very high quality ramen. We got the Belly of the Beast Ramen which had spectacular short rip, very juicy and tender. The oxtail dumplings that it came with was very salty, and a bit mushy. The pork bao bun was delicious as well and paired well with the ramen. The only downside to this place is that the restaurant is self service. They expect you to pay at the front and then you seat yourselves. They also do not serve you refreshments such as water and cups. They make you get it yourself. They only serve alcoholic beverages if you order it. Also, the location and setting of this place is outside. The only indoor seating was near where the chefs/cooks cook and it's closed off. Since it was a cold rainy day, this place is not an ideal place to eat even if they provide small fire pits on top of the table. Maybe this place is nice during summer on a hot day. I think if this establishment wants 5 stars, they should rethink their business structure of self service. Underbelly of s a delight to visit in person or to order from for delivery/pick-up. We have eaten at the restaurant on their patio at a family style table top and the service was fantastic! It is on a busy street corner and only has outside seating so dress accordingly. The majority of our orders have been for delivery/pick-up and the orders always come out on time, the orders are correct, and piping hot! Now onto the food .... Grab a napkin because you might start to drool. We have tried everything on the menu. I mean everything! I love veggies and my husband LOVES meat so we love it all! The eggplant bao buns are amazing, the hot chicken bao buns are the best! You cannot go wrong with any of the ramen bowls, customize them with extra's to fit your pallet. I love the veggie plate. Food & Drinks: I really liked the pork belly bao and the Underbelly ramen. Both classics when done well can taste the most delicious. I also have tried and like the chicken confit ramen. Their broths are flavorful and aromatic. Love the food here. They also have some good cocktails on the menu, Whiskey Highball being my personal favorite. Service: There's generally a wait, especially if you go on a weekend but the staff is friendly and nice and do everything to seat you soon. The food comes out promptly though, which is great. Ambiance: Very cozy vibes. Love the big fire pit outside, on one of my visits I was seated there and there's nothing better you'd want than a hot bowl of ramen by the fire on a winter night. This place definitely exceeded my expectations. First look at this place I love the outdoor seating especially if you are looking to have lunch solo. The employees where all nice and working efficiently to make sure everyone had there food. The food just put this place over the top for me. The pork was great. I loved the cucumber salad so fresh and I normally don't prefer kimchi but this was by far the best I have had. Dumpling where great and I had there pork baos those where great too.
