Decided to check this place out because my boyfriend and I were craving ramen but we had our dog with us so we needed a restaurant that allowed dogs. Underbelly has seating both indoor and outdoor, and it's first come first serve. You order the food near the entrance and seat yourselves. The outdoor seating is 6 pairs of seats facing out to the road, which I thought was pretty cute. We ordered "Belly of the Beast", "Underbelly", and the pork belly bun. The broth of both soups were similar and simple. You have to add the complimentary side condiments to change up the taste. For me, I love spicy so I covered my soup with the chilli flakes and the ghost pepper sauce. I would proceed with caution and put small amounts of the sauce at a time till you find the right temperature you're looking for. The "Belly of the Beast" had beef, an egg, some vgjemkeeand a really yummy dumpling. The "Underbelly" had various pork belly meats that were pretty fatty but that just makes them all the more delicious. The bun was equally fatty but oh so yummy! I've been wanting to go to Underbelly before they even opened. I finally made it and my reaction was "meh". I really like the space and the concept. However, the food was a bit lacking. The shrimp gyozas were really good, but the ramen was barely mediocre. I ordered the spicy kimchi ramen and it was super bland. Maybe that is what I get for not eating red meat, but veggie food can and should be flavorful too. I'll be back to try their other veggie ramen option and hopefully I'll be more impressed. Before a Thursday night romp at the Waterfront, I suggested my friend and I stop here for dinner to lay down a good drinkin' base. The place is tiny, but cute. It's pretty much 100% al fresco dining (there are tables and chairs on the Fir St. side, and on the Kettner side the windows convert into tables for indoor/outdoor seating!) so I'm not sure I'd be stoked to come here on a cold day. Also the staff is quite friendly and helpful! On to the food. I chose the Underbelly ramen, which boasts char-siu underbelly (so it's NOT just a clever name...), applewood smoked bacon (cooked presumably in the broth for a melt-in-your-mouth texture), and kurobuta sausage (which threw me off as it was similar in flavor profile to a polish sausage, but quite tasty). The broth was flavorful, and the noodles-to-broth ratio was quite good. Oh! And a soft boiled egg. This is pretty clutch; it has a really nice texture and just elevates the dish. The standout: tempura eggplant buns. I could eat these every day. Super crispy tempura eggplant with shitakes, micro-cilantro (amazing. A hint of cilantro flavor without all the overpower cilantro delivers when misused), and spicy mayo on a steam bun. Cruncy, salty, tangy, SO GOOD. These are a must. read more

Strictly speaking the ramen here is probably one of my favorites in San Diego, since it's more on the unique side. WARNING though: you don't get a spoon with your ramen so expect to slurp the broth from the bowl. Might want to stay away if your a germaphobe. The meat toppings for ramen are the best and most unique here. I love the BELLY OF THE BEAST. It comes with oxtail dumplings, really tender brisket, and pork belly. The broth is light and not too salty and noodles are cooked a perfect al dente. The egg is also cooked to perfection here with the yolk nice and runny when you break into the egg. I love putting some GHOST CHILI PEPPER sauce in my ramen to spice it up a bit. The place itself is a little small with limited seating. The restaurant is open air, so bring a jacket if it's chilly. The service is just okay, but I'm mostly here for the ramen. Parking can also be a bit difficult downtown if it's busy. Overall, I definitely recommend Underbelly's ramen if you are looking for some good protein with your bowl of ramen. I can't say anything for the other items though. read more

One of the stops for our San Diego trip had to be a Ramen noodle house. I always like to compare what we have in Houston to the places that we travel. I found this place through a search for Tonkotsu Ramen on Yelp. Randomly, it was a three block walk from Ballast Point where we had just enjoyed a few beers and a game of Scrabble... Yeah, yeah, Josh finally beat me...anyway as we rounded the corner, we recognized Kid Kudi playing in the late night air. The outdoor seating was trendy. The signage was incredible. The architecture rivaled many clubs/lounges that we have seen in Vegas...sadly the Tonkotsu Ramen was not up to par. There was so much potential for greatness....cool, we get it, it's "authentic," so no one gets a soup spoon. Bring the Bowl to your mouth to show your gratitude and slurp the soup to demonstrate your satisfaction. The cloudiness of the broth looked familiar, the piles of seaweed and sprouts were tiny mounds of flavor laying in the murkiness...I got the biggest, baddest bowl on the menu: THE BELLY OF THE BEAST...but where was the belly? One whole soft-boiled egg, floating on the side, uncut...really nicely boiled, but cold :/ a good amount of meat, but not pork belly--I knew I wasn't getting pork belly. The description read soft boiled eggS, oxtail dumplings, smoked brisket, hoisin glazed short rib. The was that whole egg, and from what I could tell, 3 bigger than bite size pieces of very, VERY TOUGH beef. :(. How disappointing. I could not bite through the meat and had to use my fingers to get it apart...and then came the chewing. It was like rubber! The oxtail dumplings, which also tasted luke warm, I shared one with Josh and kept one for myself...there was a nice little boney surprise in mine. Well, they don't have any spoons, so yes, we did pick up our bowls to slurp the broth, but not out of satisfaction. It was a chilly night and the broth was probably the only component of the dish that we enjoyed. At Underbelly you first place your order and then once you have ordered and paid you sit down and wait for your food. I am very proud to say I used chop sticks and didn't even ask for a fork! This is an accomplishment for me because I am not the best with chopsticks. When they bring the ramen out they give you tips on how to handle the bowl and instructions on how to eat ("slurp" it!) I ordered the Belly of the Beast Ramen and it was soo good! I really enjoyed the oxtail dumplings in it and of course the soft boiled egg. It was so tasty and huge portion! The soup base was amazing and the noodles were thick and delicious. The meat was really soft and tender. The portion was a great size, but it better be for $12 ramen! However, I must admit that I like this location a little more. I got my usual belly of the beast ramen and it was delicious. I am never able to finish my entire bowl of ramen, so I always end up waiting in line again for a to go container. The place is tight, so I just waited in line to get my container. I waited for a total of 1 minute until I asked a worker walking by if I could just get a container. It turned out to be the owner who goes by the name of Jeff. I ordered the Belly of the Beast. The ramen had lots of toppings, which were all very tasty. The noodles were fine but nothing memorable about them. The broth was a bit bland for my taste; I needed a lot of togarashi (Japanese mixed chilli pepper) and spicy mustard in it to bring out the flavor. I like the ramen at Tajima and Yakitoru Yakyudori a lot more. I don't you can beat the topping choices from Underbelly though. read more

My initial review of 'how it works is still the same' but I have to say I'm happy to see they've added an upstairs and outside area! I'm not sure how long it's been around for, but when I came back in 2012 it was just bar/window seating so the additional seating def helps! We were lucky enough to experience sitting upstairs ~ where seating is limited. There are a couple of seats for 2, some of which you can combine into seats for 4. Eats. - Pork buns. I was excited to see this on their menu as I can't seem to have ramen without pork buns ~ but was sadly disappointed. My bun fell apart and even though they serve it in a (cute) tray - I had to use my napkin as a plate to keep everything from falling on the table. Glad we grabbed extra napkins because this was way too messy (especially for a pork bun). I'm not a fan of adding 'fluffy' things to pork buns (like the cucumber and ginger hoisin mayo that it comes with). I'm also comparing this to my most favorite pork buns which have been at ramen establishments in the city (SF) and NY so maybe I'm not being fair - but I will say - the pork buns were the best part of my recent meal here.. - Belly of the Beast - it's still 'alright'. The short ribs are good, but the flavor takes over the broth and all the other flavors. - Tonkotsu ramen - I added pork belly to it to try and have it the way I would at any other ramen place. This was better than 'the beast', but it wasn't great. The egg was good but not perfect, the pork belly however was delicious! I had heard really good things about this place and was incredibly excited to try it out. My first impression was that this location is incredibly awkward and small. As we were looking at the menu outside a rather large group walked in. Once my boyfriend and I decided on what we wanted we went to the cash register to order and waited while the other group stood in front of us still deciding on what they wanted to order. Instead of the cashier taking our order and asking the other group to step aside she continued to have her personal conversation with another employee. That irritated me and should have been my first clue to leave. Once we stepped up to the cashier I started ordering while my boyfriend went to find a seat. We figured that would be okay since I was already ordering and they do have signs saying you can't save seats. Well apparently that was not okay and the group that we had to wait behind complained that my boyfriend got a table so we were asked to move and had to sit separately. At this I was incredibly irritated and when we tried to explain we were told 'read the sign'. If I hadn't already paid for my food I would have left at that. Once we got our food I was disappointed. Our ramen was cold and incredibly salty. We won't be coming back to the little Italy location and because of the poor flavor of the ramen I don't think I would be willing to go to the location in North Park either. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, this restaurant has a really cool vibe. Located in the middle of Little Italy, it's a small shop with a really trendy vibe and a large variety of beers on tap. This is super Americanized ramen. Their tonkatsu ramen is spelled tonkotsu. LOL. (As Spartacus W. of San Diego aka. the anonymous ramen police - apparently, pointed out... tonkotsu is acutally the correct spelling.) Yet, it did not taste like a tonkotsu OR tonkatsu. We ordered shrimp gyozas and tuna tataki as appetizers. Both were good and tasted the way you would imagine. The tuna tataki was a little bit mor cooked than I'm used to. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen. It came with a soft boiled egg that was more soft boiled than I'm use to. The middle was completely raw, whereas most soft boiled eggs at ramen places are somewhat cooked in the middle. The egg had a weird taste, instead of being marinated in something salty, it had a sweet taste to it. I think it might have been ginger. The broth had a creamy feel and it was bland. Additionally, it also had a hint of ginger. I'm not sure how I feel about this gingery-ness. What's kind of cool is that the servers don't touch your bowls because they don't want to dirty your bowls when you're drinking the broth out of it - since they dont' give you soup spoons (yea weird... i'll just follow byos "bring your own spoon"). I decided to try this restaurant out since I heard the food was good at this place. From my experience, the food is decent. The environment is trendy, and its got the "hipster" feel to it. I didn't like the service model of "order first before you get seated." I think that this place will get better reviews if they allow people to get seated first, allow their customers to review the menu, and then order. This place is not like subway, a burger, or pizza joint where it is okay to pay first and then take a seat. I also didn't like how we had to carry our drinks. We were seated at the upper part of the restaurant above the bar; the stairs were windy and narrow. We had to carry our drinks up and around those stairs. My husband and I had a glass of water on one hand, then our sake bottle with the glass to drink it with on the other hand. Then when we got upstairs, we had to request for our table to be cleaned. It was dirty and had food all over it from the previous customer. One may think about cleaning open tables before seating another client. This is a huge customer experience fail! The seating was also super tight. Everyone was elbow to elbow (it seemed), and it was uncomfortable. I was not able to enjoy my food. I was irritated by the whole process. Also, they will not give you a spoon to use with your ramen. You have to take the 3 lb and hot bowl of soup to your face to drink the broth. When we were finished eating, we asked our server for "to go" containers for our leftovers. He said that he'd be back to get it for us. Fifteen minutes later we haven't seen him with our box, so my husband had to go downstairs and ask from someone else for containers. This place has a sophisticated menu. The place, the food, and the look and feel of the restaurant are well done. I just don't like the service model. The service is completely disconnected to its potential. The service and process I experienced is not what one would expect from a restaurant like this one. This restaurant is not taking advantage of the potential it has. I would call the service model and the type of service we received, lazy and sloppy! If the food weren't decent, I'd give this place one star. read more

I came to Underbelly for a late dinner while i was at a conference in San Diego. There was a little bit of a line but it was moving. I sat a the bar area and ordered immediately my ramen. The ramen came out in 10-15 minutes. This is not the typical ramen place that im used to going for ramen. Being from the NYC/NJ area I am used to going to small hole in the wall places where you would have to 1-2 hours for amazing ramen. Underbelly has a trendy feel to it which is good and bad, depending on your preference. I love the authentic ramen places that just care about the food. As for the ramen, it was ok, not bad for what it is. I did not like the fact that they did not have any spoons to use. The waiter indicated they want you to lift the bowl to your mouth. (Really lol) Overall this place is good for a late night ramen fix. It did the job for me and it was reasonable in price. You may ask why only 3 stars... Because I have a very high standard for ramen. Please do not get me wrong, this place is good. I would recommend Underbelly to anyone in the area looking for a nice bowl of ramen. My friend who is a local brought me here for lunch so far I could experience some cali ramen. He got the underbelly ramen that comes with beef brisket and some oxtail dumplings. While the oxtail dumplings were pretty delish I found the brisket a bit too dry and underwhelming for my taste. I ordered the underbelly ramen with very generous portions of pork belly bacon and pulled pork. While mine was quite tasty I felt almost overwhelmed by how many types of swine I had, and probably would have preferred a bit more of the veggie fixins. Once upon a time there was a young girl who used to work ridiculous hours and by the time noon hit (lunch time for normal folk) she was filled with a raging hunger. Her long 9 hour work day was over, and after filling the needs of others, she was finally able to take care of herself. Overall really nice place, but I have a few things to note that took away from a 5 star rating! The design of the place is really awesome and modern. It has a really cool industrial feel and a cute (but very small loft seating area)...But isn't cut out for large groups at all. Tight walkways and spaces make it difficult and I couldn't imagine getting around with a party larger than 4. The music playing was far too loud and also horrible..I mean Mo Mamba is good for a club, but loses its fun when you have to yell over it to have a conversation. The ramen itself was amazing! Wonderful and extremely flavorful. The broth was delicious, and the meat was too...but maybe the two are better off separate (and this is just personal taste, has nothing to do with the rating). The meats (briskit, ox tail, etc) were really flavorful, smokey, and delicious, but completely clashed with the savory salty broth of the ramen if that makes any sense. This location is better than north park! AMBIENCE: I have been to both locations; little Italy (original) and north park. The little italy location I believe is way better than the north park one. It does feel like you're too close to the person next to you sometimes and there is very limited seating compared to north park, but trust me, the food (most important thing) is better at little Italy. There is upstairs/patio seating and very dimmed lighting. FOOD: on the pricey side for ramen, prices range from $8-$12 plus tax and tip. One bowl is definitely hefty for one person though. Come for the experience, because no spoons are allowed, so get your sipping on! My favorite condiment is their yellow chili paste (better in little Italy too), they also have sesame oil and japanese red pepper. Very generous in their meat to noodle portions. Always love the soft boiled egg. Here's my personal ranking of all the different types of ramen I've tried. 1. Underbelly Ramen ($11) - My Favorite, great combination of flavors, tons of meat! 2. Belly of the Beast Ramen ($12) - the oxtail dumplings were okay, overhyped, the flavors were good but not as good as the underbelly ramen. 3. Tonkatsu Ramen ($8) - simple and tasty 4. I was extremely excited about trying this place. I heard about it from my boss and I have a sore spot for anything ramen. I knew it was in LIttle Italy so I expected a more than average price. It's located on a corner and it's pretty small! It's a seat yourself kind of deal so probably not the best place for a large group unless you go super early or super late. You actually go up to the bar to order your food or drinks. I ordered the Belly of the Beast ramen which was $12. It had brisket wontons, pork, a little bit of veggies, and a soft boiled egg. Flavor was pretty delicious. Maybe just a tad little too thick for me. I didn't really like the wontons-they tasted pretty salty. I LOVE soft boiled eggs in my ramen but the egg yolk was still runny which I personally don't like so to each their own. :) Another thing is that they don't have spoons! Something about cultural respect for the chef. I get where theyre coming from but I usually like to eat my ramen with soup. I did get a couple of drinks. The Kiuchi white ale is pretty delicious. I also tried the bacon wrapped mushroom. Loved the mushroom, wasn't too impressed by the bacon. Overall, for the price I guess I had expected more. I wouldn't NEVER come back here, but I would probably choose other places over this one. But then again, who can turn down ramen?! read more
