I contacted Ray Underhill last week, April 27, 2022, and today, May 4, our house is finished (prep day 1, paint day 2, paint/clean up day 3)! Ray arrived on the day/time promised with an estimate, which he sent via email in lightening speed. The price was fair--almost half of a quote I received two summers ago--and I found my subsequent communications with Lance, his brother, to be efficient. Same goes for Ray and the crew, Elijah and Malcolm. I want to give Eli huge props because he did much of the work himself and was always kind, upbeat and approachable. We had a few hiccups along the way--painting the security door, a covered tankless water heater that tripped and shut off our hot water for most of the day until the plumber diagnosed the problem, the shade of the paint color we selected--but these were all easily fixed/resolved. We are very pleased with the results and workmanship and would recommend Underhill to anyone who needs honest, hardworking humans to perk up their exterior! read more

As far as painting professionals go, I really appreciate Underhill Painting! Lance and Ray are professional, they do great work and they are compassionate. We are already planning to try to hire them for two more jobs (and another property) over the next year. Pros: --They gave a great price --Paint job was well done --They scheduled us quickly --They took all Covid precautions --They responded every time I reached out --They went over and beyond to make sure I had the work done the way I needed it --they clean up well and didn't damage furniture --The painter showed up for both the quote and paint job --They responded to all my communications --They gave me a realistic schedule where I didn't have to wait too long and they kept their word Cons: --They can get busy, so plan ahead if you can. --The couple bad Yelp reviews--I'm patient, but if you need something pressing, I would stress to any customer to be proactive in communication. (No one's perfect, but these guys are professional and empathetic. If you have concerns about them responding to you or about the work they do, talk to them. Covid has contractors crazy busy. I told Lance, in advance, I really needed someone I could depend on because others had flaked, and his company came through for us--and didn't overcommit. Detailed Review: Ok, so...when I saw a couple of reviews that complained about this company's responses, I was a bit nervous, but here's the thing. I literally, during the pandemic had two different painters flake on me multiple times--one of which is the property owner's regular repair person. These other pros (NOT UNDERHILL) kept cancelling because of more important jobs. I'm a primary caregiver and don't have time/energy for that. So, I called Underhill Painting directly. I explained to Lance how much I had been struggling to get our painting project done because I had finally found a good live-in caregiver for dad and didn't want to lose her just because our place wasn't ready. Lance was patient, kind and connected me to Ray who could give me a quote. Ray made an appointment with me promptly for a quote. He showed up and gave me an amazing price, as well as options. He was super knowledgeable about the details of painting. He then both made and showed up for the appointment to paint within the timeframe we talked about. At the end, he finished within a reasonable amount of time so I could still make it to my Zoom meeting during late afternoon. When I inspected (and I tend to be very thorough) I asked him about a couple trouble spots, he was kind and explained the intricacy of painting over structural damage/wall imperfections. He was right, the soots had looked fine until they started to dry. He was proactive and kind and went over those couple of spaces (that had structural damage/imperfections) an extra time for me. He never rushed me. He took my preferences very seriously and made sure I was happy with the work before he left. I'm so glad it worked out...it took so much stress off of me. The team at Underhill Painting was wonderful to work with from beginning to end. From the outset, they were prompt in responding to scheduling and were able to give me a quote for painting my house after a walkthrough on the spot. In addition, they were also incredibly prompt in scheduling and being able to fit my timeline for needing essentially our entire interior painted prior to us fully moving in! I also really loved the ability to go to their store and work with their team directly in picking out my colors. They were excellent at matching paint to colors I wanted, and the final product was excellent. When the work was done, I really appreciated the ability to walk through the house several times, and their willingness to complete touch ups for me. I originally reached out to Underhill through a yelp search and didn't realize my bf was already talking to them. I should've done more research on them but I let my bf handle it. They were asked to paint 2 bathrooms and the ceilings. My bf negotiated a price with them and it seemed like we were on our way to a nice new coat of paint on the ceiling. They had told my bf that they would be done on Wednesday after checking the place out Tuesday. My bf meets them Wednesday noon to pay them half and I'm not sure if they discussed it would take more time than one day, but my bf was to pay them the other half when they were done. We swing by the place Wednesday afternoon to find out that they didn't even start painting yet! All they did was tape the ceilings. They said they would finish in a day but my bf then has to meet with them Thursday during his lunch to pay them the other half before they start. We have day jobs and aren't able to watch them and wait around until they're done, so my bf paid them the other half before they finished. Honestly, he really should've paid them after they finished because what we walked into Thursday evening was a messy, sloppy and quite frankly, an unfinished job. You can see from the photos, but they left tape stuck onto the ceiling in whole strips and small pieces (that I then had to scrape out throughout the place). In every room, there was paint drip from the ceiling to the wall. It was very apparent to us that they rushed the job. There was paint splitter on the cabinets and trim in the kitchen, on the mirror in the bedroom and on the bath tub and tile floors. And they left out the ceilings in the closet too - if they weren't going to cover that, they should've let my bf know because he was under the assumption that when they discussed painting all the ceilings, that it included the closets. The bathrooms were poorly done and had spots of white on the ceiling, not to mention, they also painted right onto the side of the bathtub. When my bf went to pay them on Thursday, he noticed they used the wrong paint (shiny paint instead of matte on the walls) and asked them to correct it but they didn't correct all of it. The most unprofessional part of all this was the trash they left behind for us to clean. They left orange remnants and muffin wrapper on/around the sink when there was a trash bag in the room. The level of i professionalism is just unbelievable as well. When they were done the first day, my bf asked if they left the key at the place and they responded by saying they must have dropped the key somewhere. That was their response to us. Ultimately, they must have found the key because they left the key the next day (bf let them to start the second day), but can you imagine having someone tell you they dropped your key somewhere? We weren't sure if they had dropped it in the house somewhere or outside. They could have assured us that the key was still in the house, but that they dropped it inside somewhere. I don't know where they went wrong, because previous reviews were decent and they even have a photo that said "we promise clean edges...". We were expecting a high level of quality and professionalism. We were very disappointed in the product. We considered reaching out to Underhill to rectify the problem, but we were rushed for time and honestly, were so unimpressed and over it. We kept kicking ourselves in the behind for letting them do the job. We didn't want them to come back, given how bad the first job was and ended up having to spend several hours cleaning up their sloppy work. TLDR: You get what you pay for, that's all I have to say; quality of work was sloppy, messy and seemed rushed. Edges were not clean and paint on things that aren't supposed to have paint. Lack of professionalism is beyond me. We were better off doing this ourselves. Lesson learned! read more

If you are looking for a reliable, clean, fairly priced and good painter, they are hands down the best I have ever worked with. I found them on Yelp and after speaking with the person who quoted me a job, I managed to get the job done within the week in just one day. They showed up on time at the scheduled day, got the exact paint we had, got the job done in less time then estimated and left the place as cleaned as they found it. 50% deposit and 50% paid at completed job. I would have never though getting the job done could be so easy and these guys are absolutely great at what they do. Cool, funky place. I believe they buy excess name-brand paint from other stores and resell it. It may be difficult to find two one-gallon cans of the same color, but the staff is very helpful. I showed the rep the color I was looking for and she eyeballed a match of two one-gallon cans. It worked out great. Quick to respond. I had a small touch up job after having some electrical work done. I have no attic access in a condo so the electrician needed to cut several holes in the wall. I had drywallers patch the holes. Under hill did the painting. Great job. We had some leftover paint they were able to use. Ray was super friendly. Visited 2x, the 1st time I bought a gallon, it worked very well although they do not have a machine to color match it's done by trial and error. Also, they don't have a mixing shaker . Against my better judgment and after reading some bad reviews I decided to schedule an appointment for an estimate with this company. I confirmed the location, my name/number, and time to meet. Appt was set for 3pm, the worker didn't even call me until 3:25pm to say he was held up at another job. If he knew he was tied up at another job beforehand why didn't he just quickly text me? SO UNPROFESSIONAL! Furthermore, I asked him of his location and he replied Los Angeles. I'm located in Long Beach which is at least 50 mins away during prime traffic. Scheduled an estimate for interior and exterior paint for this evening at 6:30 PM. We gave him until 7 PM to show up and when I called him, he seemed like he was just wrapping up another job. I asked what his status was and he seemed confused then he said "I thought it was earlier today." That confused me. If it was earlier today, then he knowingly no-showed???? So he asked if he could still come over. I asked what time and he said about another 45 minutes (so around 8 PM). We passed.
