Wonderful sushi place - I found it to be more a casual sushi dining place. Didn't see omakase on the menu, but there were many small plates with sashimi and sushi rolls. We were recommended by our server to pick 3-5 plates per person. Service was very attentive - our server was great. The ambiance was a bit loud with talking and noises - my friend and I found ourselves raising out voices sometimes to hear other another. I would not say it's a great environment if we had kids - tables a bit small and the setting was dark. But the place was good about spreading out our dishes so we didn't run out of space on our table. All the food was great. It was a little weird that we never really got soy sauce and wasabi, but dishes were prepared well with condiments and sauces so not a big issue. read more

Came here for Valentine's Day, which is a very difficult day for restaurants and they were super crowded. The service definitely pulled it off well. Food was ok, incredibly overpriced and some flavors were extremely overpowering and unbalanced for the rest of the meal. Examples: * Parsnips in the Chow Fun were undercooked and left an incredibly bitter, almost absinth-y aftertaste * The smoked salt served with the A5 wagyu was used in multiple dishes and had an extremely strong, lingering aftertaste * The poblano chimichurri with the hamachi kama had an incredibly strong flavor that overpowered the delicate fish, the smoked salt was also used on this dish and completely overpowered it * The shaved truffle on top of the crab fried rice was bland and flavorless, almost like it had sat under a heat lamp In terms of good: *Anything umami, such as the A5 wagyu (both nigiri and hot stone preparation), the *rest* of the chow fun dish with mushrooms, the oyster dishes, the uni spoon *All of the tuna dishes, specifically the sashimi Service was fine, ambiance was fine. The menu was incredibly hit or miss. We loved the tuna/foie gras dish (super well balanced with great acid), the wagyu presentation was great, the nigiri was all pretty good (but overpriced for the quality), with the chutoro sticking out. I think I'll have to echo a lot of the sentiment about this place. Uni presents an ambitious menu highlighting Japanese-modern fusion, so I made my reservation with high expectations, but sadly every dish fell a bit short. I guess I'll just review each dish in order of how they were served. Pork belly bun (8/10) - Probably the best dish of the night, so it made me feel optimistic about the rest of the dishes. The sauce was a bit sour for my taste, but the pork belly was perfect (bottom was crispy, fat was juicy, top of fat was crispy). Overall very solid Wagyu Dumpling (5/10) - tasted kind of just like a good dumpling, served in a miso broth that was pretty bland. The best part of this dish is the cheese dashi that gives a nice dash of flavor upon the first bite, but by the end the dumpling is pretty meh. Maybe the dumplings would be better served in a more flavorful broth (also maybe higher fat ratio in the dumpling filling) Pork cheek (2/10) - worst dish of the night. Best part of this dish was the peach. This should not be the case! The pork was dry and flavorless. Tuna foie gras tataki (7/10) - Presentation was really beautiful. Foie gras was perfect. Some room for improvement: maybe marinade the tuna in some soy-based sauce for a bit to add more flavor (the tuna only really added a chunk of protein to the dish / wasn't really seasoned or anything). Or maybe instead of the sauce they provided, maybe a blueberry compote or something to cut into the foie gras. They do serve a blueberry on top of the dish that is nice but we could get MORE of that. I think considering the price and serving size for these dishes, I expect a lot more. For the $25 tuna tataki I would want the tuna to be seasoned better, and for the $16 pork cheek (which is quite small) I would hope for something more flavorful and less dry! The only thing I would come back for is the pork belly bun. I guess I'm willing to give Uni the benefit of the doubt since they do offer a large assortment of sushi and sashimi, and maybe this is what they specialize in more than small hot plates! read more

I get that this is fusion and it's not supposed to be traditional Japanese, but at this price point, it needs to be delicious no matter what the style food it is Food: Cooked food: Fried rice was sloppy. Hardly any crab and the egg was a over cooked scrambled egg that was just placed on top of the plate. Dumplings were dry, not what I would expect when people say a5 beef in a dumpling. The hot oil was good, probably the only good thing we ate. Foie gras on the strip steak was so small that unless you put the bite in the mouth in such a particular way, you would miss it. Rolls: Could not taste the fish. It's zero different than any other sushi spot. Completely covered in sauce and competing flavors. Nigiri: there were no unique fish that you would expect from a high end sushi restaurant. They use different names and descriptions but it's all the same. The best they had was yellowtail belly and California uni, but it was not better than anything you could get at your local sushi joint. Uni on the spoon looked nice but didn't come together. I struggled on what score to give UNI. The sushi does taste pretty good, but there are some serious dilemmas I have with eating here. I'll start with their Sriracha sauce, a condiment, will set each person at the table back $3. And you want Eel Sauce too? That's another $3 per person. So a party of 10.... you're $60 in for TWO tiny little condiments. That's messed up. I don't care if there are gold flecks in your Eel Sauce. It's still a condiment. Also our server forgot to put in three of the Idema we ordered. We waited and waited and when we pressed her on it she had no clue what we were talking about. We also asked for a fork 4-5 times over a 25 min period before it finally showed up. Super frustrating to have that level of service on a huge tab like that. UNI is an Asian Fusion restaurant located on 370 Commonwealth Ave towards the Prudential Center side of Boston. Asian fusion to me means you take traditional dishes and cooking techniques of one culture and you combine it with elements from another country to create a new dish. I must say, I have yet to find an Asian Fusion restaurant that succeeded at taking traditional Japanese cuisine and then trying to elevate it by introducing another country's flavors. UNI was not successful either. My husband and I came on a Saturday evening, with reservation, and were seated immediately by the hostess. We opted to sit outside and luckily the weather was beautiful. To give you an idea of the price point, the first thing you're asked is if you want sparkling water or tap water, sparkling water is $6. This is very common at some of the four $$$$ restaurants that I have dined at. Only except the sparkling water at Uni came in a glass water bottle instead of a plastic bottle. Do they carbonate their own water? We also ordered the Japanese Highball, a Japanese whisky with seltzer water ($14) and a hot tea which came in a small cast iron tea pot ($6). Our four appetizers totaled $96, and each sashimi we ordered, and we ordered six, ranged between $12-$25. You can easily spend a few hundreds here. The Uni Spoon was smooth and buttery. The raw Scottish Langoustine was my favorite item of the night. I enjoyed the sweetness of the meat and the citrus oil. The miso soup was also very balanced. Then things sort of went south. The Tai (sea bream) sashimi came in a beautiful silver plate but in a pool of coal activated lemonade. Seeing beautiful slices of fish soaking up black water was not appetizing. The fish was fresh but I don't understand the black water. The oysters were ok in flavors but lacked on presentation. We enjoyed the shiitake mushroom however it came with a very unappetizing brown splatter of sauce. The sauce tasted as bad as it looked. This brown fiasco seemed to be a recurring theme with many dishes we ordered. The scallop sashimi was no better off sitting on multiple blobs (I kid you not) of brown colored "candied bacon jam" which tasted nothing like you would imagine. The salmon sashimi did not fair better with this dark brown smear of a fermented black bean sauce. I want to note that I grew up eating fermented black bean. It does not go with raw salmon. The suzuki sat in an oily bath. The tuna and foie gras was in cohesive. The foie gras tasted fine by itself but being served warm over cold tuna and then garnished with a tiny pea sized sugar infused strawberry and crunchy black walnut??? I am going to make a broad sweeping assumption based on my experience that any dish with any type of brown sauce should be avoided at all costs. The sauces need to be re-evaluated. Our last item proved to be most disappointing. The soft shell crab was battered and deep fried in some sort of grain. This gave it a crunchy but gritty texture. It was oily. I joked with my husband that they completely missed the concept of soft shell crab as it felt like we were eating crab shells. The pickled asparagus that topped it was also not good. Then there was the pool of sauce it sat on which tasted mostly of mayonnaise. I give them 3 stars for food and 4 stars for customer service since all of the waiters and waitress, about 6, that serviced us was polite and attentive. My recommendation is that the servers slow down and speak clearly when they serve a dish. Also, the restaurant's servers dress code seemed to be blue jeans, black v-neck t-shirt, and black sneakers. I know I am going to sound pretentious saying this but I felt that this was a bit too casual and shows that the restaurant does not pay attention to details. This is hands down one of my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. I was not a huge fan of raw fish before trying this restaurant but after eating here I absolutely love it. The food as immaculate and in a way it takes you on a different adventure with every bite you take. The sashimi are my favorite and I recommend trying they all! I'm a huge fan of the Wagyu beef dumplings. You cannot leave this place without trying the Foie Gras nigiri. The desserts were also extremely delicious. The cocktails were also extremely delicious with lots of flavor and depth. I highly recommend coming here with a few friends and trying as many dishes as possible. I love the ambience of the place and the staff are so kind, attentive and knowledgeable You can choose to dress up or dress down. We went here for a special occasion because everyone raved about how this was the best restaurant ever. First and foremost, it's definitely a fancy ($$$$) spot and felt that way. But because of how expensive it was, I can only give it a 3 star review because I just feel like I would probably not come back... Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I tried it; it was, by no means, bad. It just wasn't amazing. We got shishito peppers to start with some drinks, which was good, but not anything special. Then we did the omakase with the addition of the waygu beef at the end. Again, the omakase selection was not bad, but there wasn't too many things that made us go 'wow'. The uni dish was very good, coming from somebody who typically hates uni. But some of the other dishes were just.. meh. Maybe I'm spoiled with all the Asian restaurants in SoCal, but for how much people raved about this place, it was just pretty lackluster in my opinion. As for service, I give it a B+. Our waiter was not the most attentive near the beginning of the meal when we wanted to start ordering (it wasn't busy, but I think they were starting to get ready for the incoming dinner rush). So tonight was a special birthday celebration despite Covid and omicron and all the health risks! I ventured out and went to celebrate in a public venue since my last birthday was stuck at home. Tonight I was willing to indulge fully in what became a 325 $ meal to fete and I requested to dine here, based on coming to Clio 10 years ago for my birthday. Toto we are NOT at Clio anymore! First I was disappointed to be greeted by an extremely casually dressed hostess. Meanwhile I was wearing a new dress and heels and bf was wearing a suite. She brought us to a cramped bar for seating where literally We could not lift our elbows. 1 THIS IS COVID! 2 this is a $$$$$ restaurant and 3 we are only using chopsticks and kind of need to lift our elbows without touching a stranger- who also by the way needs to lift their elbows too. The stool was extremely uncomfortable and - thus is why I am up with back pain at 3am writing this review. Since we are smooshed facing a neon bright sushi bar, receiving service from our server was extremely difficult and a very lack luster experience. When you go to a good restaurant - part of the experience is thé service, learning about the food and wine. She was an order taker and not a server. I hope my partner didn't tip her. A teenager at McDonald's could have done a better job, and at least there I could have seen their face. Same goes for the staff bringing these $40 tapas. A litter ceremony, attention to where plates are placed would be nice. We get it... tapas= casual. Ok now we know you are cool like Barcelona. Drinks He wanted warm sake and I wanted cold. The drink menu showed 3 options one for him (a carafe) and two options for me (glasses). I told her I was unfamiliar with both and which did she prefer, she said the sparkling. Next she comes with a BOTTLE of sake, unscrews it and sets it next to me in an ice bucket/ just as she is about to leave, I ask, hey- I thought I ordered a glass of wine! She giggles and says whoops, and we negotiate if we can send m'y partner's CARAFE back. Didn't she notice that we basically ordered TWO bottles of sake for two ppl? For the record I did enjoy the sake. I don't know if he did. The food. Ok, I loved the food. Mostly. In order of what we experienced we had: Sake - Salmon with black bean, ginger, cilantro -- very good! I loved the paste, my boyfriend did not Tako - Octopus (warm sesame oil, ginger, barrel aged tamari ) - flavor was really good! It just happened to be sitting in a sea of oil. We asked for a side of rice- which 45 minutes later never came. So that dish tho served first, got eaten very slowly over our time there. A bad side effect of sharing this plate was tons of sloppy oil drips on the table no matter how good you are with chopsticks! Hamachi - Yellowtail with oroblanco, , jalapeno, orange -- very good! Lubina - Bass with maguro shirodashi, lemongrass, garlic -- very good our favorite Hamachi Negima maki with pickled banana pepper, scallion - very good! Hokkaido Bafun Uni - Sea Urchin yuzu kosho, soy -- flavorful uni but served on a high bed of tightly wrapped rice. The ratio was way off and waaaay too heavy on the rice. This is one bite, and you don't get a second chance! I knew to eat mine super slowly so my mouth could "find" the uni. And let the rice get chewed almost first to get it out of the way. Thankfully I ate mine first so I could advise my boyfriend who probably would have missed the delicate flavor of the uni in his one bite. Texture of tightly packed rice with delicate uni was jarring! I will mention that unfortunately this was my "last flavor" of the night. Although the uni was a lovely flavor, it was obviously fishy. Knowing it was my birthday, knowing that the server missed a step with the sake, a small sweet at the end to "cleanse" my palette would have been nice. I didn't feel like ordering a full desert but most places (even Barcelona - because I was there last week celebrating my daughters birthday- will give you a complimentary little something to honor a birthday as a gesture) read more

I'm a fan! I love Nobu Malibu and Sugarfish. The fish at Uni is equally as good. Of course you don't have the million dollar view of the pacific but everything is top notch. My daughter and I really enjoyed the black bean salmon sashimi, the chow fun noodles, the spicy beef dumplings and the blue fin akami tuna! I really loved the food gras sushi. TLDR: perfect spot for a splurge My wife and I came for our anniversary dinner and did the omakase. First things, if you're expecting a quiet intimate dinner you're not getting that. The inside is loud and energetic. Not the most romantic place but if you want good food this place has it in spades. Our omakase was a delightful 11 course meal highlighting primarily the fish of the restaurant. Each dish was beautifully plated and bursting with flavor both complex and subtle. Multiple times throughout the meal I would close my eyes and feel how the tastes changed and permeated in my mouth. I finished the meal full but not stuffed. I got two cocktails the yuzu gin and tonic and the highball which were both very smooth. It was very busy on a Tuesday night and service was decent but not as attentive as I would expect given the cost of the meal. From a value standpoint Chinatown is undefeated but for a unique level above the rest experience this place is awesome. If you have the means definitely try it. read more

Such an inventive menu! Uni is Japanese fusion, that is not afraid to take risks. It's small plate style (tapas), and I'd encourage you to go with a few friends to try a lot. Not every dish here is a hit - often very polarizing to people. I came here with friends, and we all enjoyed very different dishes. My two favorites were the uni spoon and the nonesuch oysters. The uni spoon was rich and creamy - I've never had anything like it. The oyster was a contrast - sweet, salty, with nice acid. Some of my friends enjoyed the duck carnitas, I thought it was ok - the scallion pancake used absorbed too much oil in my opinion. I was glad to see the chicken and waffles off the menu this time though - interesting in theory, but the mix of flavors wasn't right. Feel like going by yourself? Uni has a great Omakase...one of the better ones in Boston. As everything is small plates, watch the price. We tried several dishes here. Not all dishes impressed us, but they do have some good stuff. The Korean BBQ sauce on grilled yellow collar was way too salty and provided a weird smell. The fish meat itself was fine. The Fried rock shrimp contained a fishy taste. The fishy taste normally should be get rid of because of the tempura cooking style. Tuna and foi gras was the best dish. They used little bit of spicy powder on foi gras and grilled with the tuna properly. They tasted flavorful. Another creative dish was heirloom melon. The dish came with assorted melons soaked in beef bone broth. The broth had a smoky taste and the melons were extremely sweet. I liked this course. The last main course was the A5 on hot stone. The A5 beef was fantastic, but a little bit too fatty. It costed me $10 per piece, but still worth it! The service was poor comparing to the price here. We had a fish course which left some bones in my personal plate. The server asked me to toss the bones in another plate then took away that plate instead of providing me a new plate. I was shocked. The overall rate would be 3.5*. They have some good courses, but half of them were not that nice. In addition, the service was below average. I hope they can improve in the future. read more

Note: We ordered over $700 worth of food and sampled nearly everything on their menu. The food was overcomplicated, expensive, and had some very strange flavors. MENU ITEMS WHICH WERE SOMEWHAT DECENT: We started out with the Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and Korean rice cakes. They were salty but packed with flavors. However, for a $14 Korean rice cake dish, we only got a small handful of rice cakes and kimchi with some shredded beef. It was very oily. Not bad, taste-wise though. We ordered a large amount of uni (Sea Urchin), since that's what the restaurant's namesake is. We had uni spoons, which had a little quail egg yolk on top. Very creamy and smooth, almost like pudding. However, it was $17 per spoonful. We also got the Main Uni Nigiri, which was just alright. Their drink, the Japanese Highball was incredible. It was this light whiskey mixed drink for $14. Somewhat acceptable dishes were the Unagi Foie Gras, the spicy tuna roll (which was $16 and overpriced for something you can get at any Japanese restaurant), the Dragon Roll (which only came with 4 pieces), and the pork buns. The Dragon Roll had pomegranate on top, which was incredibly confusing and weird. THE BAD: We had three collars of hamachi grilled fish (for $30 apiece) which could have been fantastic, had they not smeared on a layer of thick, unappetizing teriyaki sauce all over it. The fish was cooked to perfection, and adding lime and lemon juice to it was delicious. Unfortunately, we just had to avoid the dreadful teriyaki sauce on top. Their lobster fried rice cannot even be classified as "fried rice". It was made with pure black wild rice, which has a chewy consistency. It was quite strange. Why you would ever pair wild rice with lobster in an overpretentious "fried rice" beats me. Fried rice is generally a base of short-grain white rice with egg. The Wagyu beef dumplings were an interesting affair. You couldn't taste the Wagyu at all. The overwhelming taste was of this charred & extremely smokey lettuce, which was underneath the dumplings. Every bite or smell of the dish just smelled like pure wood smoke. In the end, we didn't finish and ended up asking each other "Does anyone want the Wagyu?" Which, in any other setting, people would be climbing over each other to have a taste of delicious Wagyu beef. To add insult to this already weird meal, we ordered a very straightforward dish: the salmon sashimi. For $17 per sashimi order, we received a HUGE plate with a few slices of sashimi arrayed on top of an unsightly brown smear. It literally looked like feces. It was black bean sauce, which totally does not go with salmon sashimi. We asked for the traditional soy sauce and wasabi and ignored the weird black bean sauce. It seemed like many people were buying into the fancy vibe of the restaurant and enjoying themselves, and even going as far as to say it was the "best sushi they've ever had". They're wrong. This is a very non-traditional, overcomplicated, strange menu. Wagyu should be the star of the dish, not overpowered by smoke flavor. Fried rice should not have chewy wild rice in it. Beautifully grilled hamachi fish shouldn't have awful teriyaki sauce blanketing it. Salmon sashimi should not be on top of black bean sauce. Their food had no rhyme or reason to it, despite how expensive it was. I believe that good food requires good ingredients cooked with a purpose and highlights a clear star of the dish. Foams, smears, towers, and other "cheffed-up" fancy things with 30 ingredients does not automatically make great food. read more

They brought out our dishes 1 at a time and at random intervals, so some of us didn't get anything for around an hour and others got everything they ordered. It's one thing to bring dishes out as they're ready, but this was just not organized. If the prices were not as high it would be acceptable, but you can't be paying $20 for two pieces of nigiri and have to flag down the waiter any time you need something. We are big Japanese cuisine and sushi fans, and stumbled upon this recommended restaurant through the Boston's top restaurants guide. At the end of the experience, I would not recommend dropping your pretty penny here. Food is mediocre. The warm appetizers were decent: tempura squash, unagi, and crab noodles. The crab noodles probably salvaged the entire night for us (definitely worth trying if you're here). The sashimi was "meh": the tuna fois gras carried a unique flavor, but the red snapper ceviche was excessively sour. The nigiri selection was unique as compared to other sushi restaurants in the area (barracuda, amongst other less commonly seen fish), but flavor was lacking. The portions are definitely small, so be prepared to order a lot of food! Service and ambience KILLS this place. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen, but the warm entrees took excessively long to be served (to the point where we finished our sushi dishes and still did not see our warm appetizers). Our waiter-- I believe he went by "Vi" was just awful. He consistently forgot to check in to obtain our orders. For example- after notifying us that the restaurant was out of one of the items we ordered, he said he'd give us some time to decide on an alternative. Well-- we never saw him again, until we hunted him down. Our water glass was left empty the entire night, and we had to actively find someone to give us a refill of tap water. I went here with my friend recently for dinner. I was looking forward to this place based on a coworker's recommendation. When I entered the restaurant, my first impression was that it was very noisy. Gladly, they seated us in the basement level and it was much quieter. For appetizers, we ordered the mushroom katsu roll, an order of hotate sashimi, hamachi duet and maguro. The hotate sashimi came with a few slivers of scallop, maitake mushroom, and candied bacon jam. The scallop was very fresh. Although the portion was small, I think this was my favorite dish. The mushroom katsu roll came with four pieces. Inside the roll, there was mushroom tempura and hajikami ginger. The roll was drizzled with aji panca sauce. It was a bit sour because of the ginger and a bit spicy because of the sauce. The roll was not bad. The hamachi duet consisted of 6 slices of two different cuts of hamachi, black truffle and pork belly croutons. It was good although I thought the sashimi was a bit fishy. The maguro consisted of five slices of tuna sashimi, epazote cream, corn slivers, cotija cheese, and hot sauce. I didn't like this dish at all because the sauce kind of covered the taste of the fish. For entrees, we ordered 2 ounces of the Wagyu sirloin on hot rock and the miso marinated black cod. The waiter brought us a big hot rock to grill the thinly sliced A5 beef(about 8 thin slices). 10 seconds on each side is good enough for medium rare. The beef was good. There was also 4 different types of salt and sukiyaki sauce to dip the beef but I hardly used it. The miso marinated cod came with white asparagus and strawberry slices. It was good but the portion was really small. For dessert, we tried the chocolate and avocado mousse and the miso cheesecake espuma. The chocolate and avocade mousse was served on top of a pineapple slice with some miso sauce and spicy popcorn. There were too many flavors in this dessert, making it too complex to enjoy. We had been looking forward to coming here - made reservations for 9. we got there and they were clearly overbooked or other tables were not being cleared. because of covid we had the utmost patience and understood waiting for a table. because of the wait i think the manager? offered us drinks on the house. he took everyone who was waiting drink orders (about 15 people) which obviously was going to back up the poor one bartender. needless to say we didn't get our drinks. we finally got a table - sat down with the menu. our waiter comes over and said he knows we are still waiting for drinks. i said i know we have to put in a food order with drinks (as i said we were excited to come and had already looked the menu) and i stated what we wanted. our waiter interrupts and said "the kitchen is actually closed." i was like EXCUSE ME? he said the kitchen closed at 930. i said umm we had reservations at 9 - makes no sense. we waited 30 mins for our table to then be told the kitchens closed???? and i see sushi coming in and out to other tables. he then told us he was going to postpone the kitchen for our two appetizer orders. unreal. our drinks finally came and i had to convince my boyfriend to not walk away from the table. we were both so enraged we just wanted the check. meanwhile we're still seeing food coming out of the restaurant and our waiter hamming up with other tables. also people were still being seated - clearly the kitchen wasn't closing. we promptly left and ended up going to another restaurant up the street with far better service and food. we will never be coming back and will not recommend to anyone. it was a birthday dinner and they clearly only cared about the tables that were already seated. read more

We went per the recommendation of our hotel concierge, and it did not disappoint...it is located inside the Eliot Hotel. It was raining, and we had reserved an outdoor table, so initially they wanted us to sit a shared table, which I was not too keen on...first time in Boston, on a night out with my husband, they also offered us the bar, which we preferred. The bartender was very helpful with recommendations and drinks. We ordered a bunch of small plates, it is Japanese fusion...reminded me of Uchi down here in Houston. We loved everything, but the wagyu beef dumplings were ok, otherwise as the plates kept coming we were excited by the artistry and flavors of them all. I went here for the first time recently with a friend who picked it out, so I didn't have many expectations going in. My friend is an even bigger foodie than me so I let him do the ordering and he picked a great variety! We got the oysters, caviar, tuna sampler, maguro-tuna, another sashimi I can't remember, uni nigiri, matcha basque cheesecake, and chocolate cremeux. Everything was excellent! The only thing I didn't love was the uni, but I think that's just because I personally don't love the taste in general. The tuna sampler and maguro sashimi stood out as my favorites, but all of the dishes were fresh and flavorful. The desserts are small so don't be afraid to get one (or two!) if you want to end your meal on a sweet note. The two we got were excellent-- which is saying something since I normally don't like cheesecake. For any cheesecake skeptics/dislikers, it's very light and doesn't have the sour/tangy taste that many cheesecakes have. Honorable mentions: the paloma I had and the yuzu G&T my friend got were also very good! The food was slow to come out and I wish they had staggered them a little more, but it didn't ruin the dinner at all and overall it was a great dining experience. Delicious and interesting menu. The extensive selection of raw fish is exquisite and fresh. Everything we had was full of unique flavors and perfectly presented. I would strongly suggest Uni. The hamachi belly nigiri, salmon belly nigiri, barracuda nigiri and hamachi sashimi were delicious. The toro is a tasty bite and worth the price. The oysters where a nice starter in a vichyssoise sauce (yum). Even the fishless plates were rememberable, I thought the risotto was well done and had a well backed flavor of cheese and mushroom. I'm being generous with the 3-star review. You come to a restaurant for the food an ambience. Food was fine, ambience was absolutely non-existent with this new "in suite" dining disaster. Frankly, "in suite" dining is just not something that a top-tier restaurant like Uni should be doing or even have considered doing. I didn't know that's what they were doing before actually getting to the restaurant. "In Suite" dining is probably OK if you're at Saddam Hussein's palace with marble floors, golden fixtures, and exotic animals roaming around. It's absolutely NOT OK if it's in a run down old hotel. To be seated, they lead you up an old, narrow, barely lit staircase to a room which you share with another table. There's a small radio playing 90's classic hits such as Pony by Genuine, Waterfalls by TLC, Straight Outta Compton by NWA, and other similar rarities. The room itself is disgusting as you'd expect from an old Boston hotel. If you need to use the restroom, you need to go all the way down the stairs. Have to call a waiter? Nope. Not happening unless you use your cell phone and call the restaurant. No way to adjust temperature in the room as it was freezing. My wife and I are in our 30s so we can certainly get down to some 90's saucy bangers while enjoying fresh toro & foie gras but do I need to? Is this what I would expect from a restaurant where a meal is around $200/person? To add to that - absolutely no other restaurant has done this. Why does Uni think it's OK to stuff people in a dirty hotel room for dinner yet no other Boston restaurant had the genius to think of this? Have some self respect and stop this "in suite" dining. Also - it's not safer for COVID as there's absolutely no air circulation in the room. Food - fine. Ordered all the sashimi and nigiri on the menu. Fresh, good flavor. It's worse than Cafe Sushi at 30% higher prices. So if you really just want good sushi then head on over to Cafe Sushi in Cambridge. Service - good. Had to wait 15-minutes past our reservation time to get seated but not a huge deal. Waiter was friendly, attentive, and fun. All good here. So yeah - no reason to go to Uni. If you absolutely must have their food (for whatever reason) then just order takeout/delivery and enjoy it at home. If you want really good sushi then there are better options. If you want ambience then go anywhere else except Uni. read more

Let's start by saying that this was not my first time at Uni. I just don't recall it sucking so badly. Anyway, we ordered bunch of dishes of which, more than half was complete trash and the rest being a solid 3/10 and that's merely due to the gorgeous weather that we had for outdoor dining. Here are some highlights of the night: First up, the duck carnitas. Have you ever went swimming at the beach and accidentally swallowed the ocean water? This dish is a close representation of it. One bite and my mouth was gurgling salt. Next up, continuing with the salt theme was the salty Mexican corn with shrimp crackers. The perfect analogy for this dish would be toothpaste and orange juice, gross. Not to mention, we only took one bite and sent it back to the kitchen. (still was charged for it)Then we had scallops served granola, peach, and chimichurri. Try saying that 3 times fast. - Yet another failed attempt of culinary innovation. Lastly, dry and bland ramen miso butter noodles. Although this may sound appetizing, I am 100% that my 10 year old can outcook this dish with cup noodles. Finally, special thank you to our waiter Curt or Kurt for completely ignoring our existence and for working at a sloth speed. With all the food being so salty and taking 30 minutes for drink. I felt like like I was in the middle of the Sahara desert, lips chapped and dying of thirst. Pro tip: make sure to double check your receipt for charges of food that you didn't order because that's what happened to us. By far the worst $300 meal ever. The service was MIA, we had to ask for our drinks and even for soy sauce... in a Japanese restaurant! Our dishes came out in rapid succession, and we had to pile the dishes as they weren't cleared. At this price point, the chef should really have impeccable taste. I found that many of the dishes at Uni actually just didn't taste good. From worst to best: Spicy tuna roll with plantain and molé - This was truly horrific. I think the ingredients speak for themselves. I had to eat something else immediately afterwards to palate cleanse. Shishito peppers - They use a sweet sauce which ruins the beautiful simplicity of these peppers. I didn't think it was possible to mess up shishitos. You can just char and salt them and they are amazing. Brussels sprouts - This had a sweet sauce as well and also used fennel which gave it a kind of off taste. Also a little bit of grit. Smoked uni spoon - I normally love this dish. It was fine. Good food, disappointing service. For over 150$ per person they kept giving us the wrong orders and we had to wait an additional 20 minutes because they forgot an order. It was our 12th anniversary and they had said they could arrange champagne or a candle in a dish, neither of which happened.
