    Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll
    GT N.

i was craving sushi so i wanted to try this place. food we ordered: olive tuna handroll - 3/5: the olive slices were a nice touch, and i've never had it with tuna before. the nori was a bit damp because of the rice by the time it got to our table, and i'm picky about the seaweed texture with my handrolls. spicy tuna hand roll - 3.5/5: this one was a bit more flavorful. i'm not a fan of jalapeños and took them off so i can't give my full feedback, but it wasn't bad. salmon carpaccio - 4/5: our favorite dish. the sauce was very flavorful and paired well with the salmon. crispy spicy tuna roll - 3/5: i was craving crispy rice spicy tuna, and this was the closest on the menu. we were informed it had cream cheese and still ordered it. i don't mind cream cheese in rolls, but i usually never go for it. the cream cheese was a bit overwhelming and took over the flavor, but the rolls were okay. chef's pick (nigiri set) - 4/5: it wasn't bad and the nigiri was a decent size. the fish was fresh but it could be fresher. we received a warm welcome and it was a nice atmosphere. our server didn't interact with us much and another server was helping us too. we were seated in a booth at the end of the wall where the servers stand, so one was leaning on the edge by my side backrest/wall. i get we were probably by the server station, but it wasn't my favorite seating. overall, the experience was okay, and i'm glad we got to try it!

I came here for lunch on a weekend and was able to get a seat quickly at the bar. The waitress was very helpful and gave us great suggestions for what to order. The food also came out super quickly. I got the 3 handrolls and enjoyed all of them! The one thing I didn't love was the cream cheese in the salmon hand roll but that's just my personal preference. My boyfriend absolutely loved the chefs selection of nigiri!

Sakabayashi Sushi Tavern is such a great find in Back Bay! Their menu has so many delicious options and since we wanted to try as much as possible, we decided to go with the dinner set course for $50. For the price you get a ton of food so it's a great deal! The service is really fast and efficient with each course coming out promptly. My favorites were the sashimi platter and hand rolls. The dessert options were also really good! The restaurant is super cute and fun inside and has a good amount of seating if you're looking to stop by. I will definitely be back when I'm in Back Bay!

I opted for the dinner set because there's so many options but this was the best balance of trying different things at a fixed price. My favorite was the potato salad which came in a sphere shape and you're supposed cut it in half with a spoon, mix and mash it altogether. There's like a preserved egg yolks with ikura, potato as the outer layer and seasoning. It's definitely creative and fun. Next on my favorite was the tempura. Perfectly fried and the veggies/ seafood they used was crisp. Love that they provided different types of salt. The tuna cuts weren't my favorite because the way it was cut, there was lots of tendon making it hard to chew. The stir fries soba was tasty and filling (and a bit greasy) But otherwise, I really enjoyed my set dinner menu. Service was attentive though I felt like my waitress was a bit rude at first when we ordered - like she was fed up about something. She came around later, rest of the staff were friendly and welcoming.

I was excited to finally come eat at Sakabayashi in person after having only ordered takeout from here. We came around lunchtime on a Thursday and it was pretty busy, but not enough to have to wait for a table for two. I got the Lunch Course and chose the Umai Chawanmushi and Salmon Ikura Don for my main dishes. This was honestly great value for $36 considering how full I was. Everything came out fresh and I have no complaints. The space is nice and bright, and sitting in the back makes you forget you're on busy Boylston Street. Service was also friendly and efficient. I would definitely come back!

Made a reservation during their anniversary special, and loved it. Some of the best seared salmon I've had in a long time. The grapefruit sour is also good, and comes in a large serving! Will definitely be back for more. Service was great but I think they forgot about us for a bit. Not a huge deal.

I loved it! If you want traditional sushi, come here! There are so many different combos and deals. I got a tuna special combo, Magnificent 8, and the Chef's Pick, the Trio Combo and the Boston roll. Yum yum. Had it with lots of affordable warm saki. Service was fine. Restaurant is nicely modern and clean. Will come again!

Nigiri 8 and Unagi & Omelette Wow Mountain Bowl
    Lydia C.

We got 2 lunch sets - the Unagi & Omelet Wow Mountain Bowl (which comes with miso soup) and the Dine Out Boston lunch set of spicy tofu, karaage, nigiri 8, and miso soup. It was altogether plenty of food for 2, and we both left quite satisfied. I really liked the unagi and omelet wow mountain bowl. The unagi in particular was cooked perfectly tender. The omelet on the other hand was a little overdone for me, but altogether the dish was quite good - especially with the eel sauce! The nigiri was great as well, with my favorites being the salmon and unagi pieces. Spicy tofu was pretty small with only 2 slices, but I liked the spicy bits. Karaage was also decent but didn't stand out. I loved the interior with lantern decor, and it was quite a good lunch spot. The waitress who seated us and took our order was quite rude, but all the other staff were very nice. There's a QR code for a customer service survey that gives you 5% off the current visit.

Food Review: Sakabayashi - 665 Boylston St, Boston, MA If you're craving elegant Japanese cuisine in the heart of Boston, Sakabayashi is the spot to check out! We indulged in their $78 dinner course, and it was well worth every penny. From delicate flavors to thoughtful plating, this spot knows how to make every bite count. Dinner Course Rundown: The amuse bouche was salmon and prosciutto sush press. I've never had basil pesto on sushi before what a treat! Assorted Appetizers - A beautiful selection of six small bites. My favorite was the potato salad, creamy and comforting with a slight Japanese twist. Wakame Miso Soup - Light, warming, and a great start to the meal. Chef's Special Seafood Carpaccio - A standout! The fish was fresh and tender, drizzled with a citrusy sauce that made each bite sing. Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll - Our pick for the hot dish. Flavorful, crunchy, and a fun fusion twist on a classic roll. Hand Roll - We chose the spicy tuna (because we are such suckers for it!) one--delicious and fresh with the perfect balance of rich and sharp. Nigiri Selection - Seven pieces, including seared otoro, uni gunkan (not my favorite I've had better uni!), ikura, and scallop. The Heavenly Seared Otoro lived up to its name. Catalana Dessert - A sweet, smooth finish that resembled a Japanese crème brûlée. Light but indulgent. A La Carte Must-Tries: Salmon Carpaccio ($14) - With your choice of wasabi or carpaccio sauce--fresh, buttery, and tangy. Tuna Tsukune (Grilled Tuna Meatballs) ($8) - Juicy and satisfying, perfect with a dab of mayo or miso glaze. These were a 10/10. You have to get these when you come. Tuna Tartare with Bread($9) - Clean, bold flavors with a perfect textural balance. Very shareable! Ambiance: 8/10 Wooden booths give it a warm, intimate vibe while still feeling modern and relaxed. Affordability (for Boston sushi): 7/10 While it's not a budget spot, the quality matches the price--especially for a multi-course meal or if you're used to sushi pricing in Boston. They even have locations in Japan, so you know it's legit. Final Score: 9/10 Great for a date night, a special dinner, or just treating yourself to top-tier Japanese flavors. Highly recommend the dinner course if you want to taste a bit of everything!

    Sakabayashi Funamori

Wow I can't believe I hadn't been here before!! This place was incredible!! The sushi was super fresh and they had so many tasty options! I loved trying some new dishes that I wouldn't normally order but every single bite I had was so delicious!! The decor is beautiful and the restaurant is a great spot. The staff was incredible and super attentive. They gave us suggestions on some of their most popular dishes (and we loved them all)! The magnificent 8 is an assortment of 8 sushi pieces that are all perfectly crafted and super fresh! If you are adventurous and like trying new sushi this is a must get!! Every bite was so delicious!! The sakabayashi funamori was also a great sashimi assortment. We also tried the sakabayashi California roll which is a Cali roll topped with salmon and Tobiko that was delish! The Fujiyama carpaccio was super fresh and light with the perfect sauce and had seared salmon and ikura. If you're looking for non-sushi bites we also tried the karaage which was perfectly crispy and the mini tonkatsu ramen which was super flavorful! Overall would absolutely recommend going here and I can't wait to go back!

Got takeout here and it really hit the spot. The menu is quite interesting with a wide variety of items. The food slapped! It hit the spot, and didn't break the wallet. The one thing we wished they gave us a little dish to put your soy sauce to dip your sushi in.

If you've been to sushiro in Japan/Asia, then you can definitely see the footprints of the conglomerate here. The interior is modern, clean, and simple. Prices are reasonable for Back Bay but definitely not the cheapest. Fish quality was good. Service was fine but nothing special.

Limit is 10 servings a day! Only $18
    Joy G.

Not bad if you're craving sushi while in Back Bay. Despite being in the heart of Newbury, I found the prices to be lower compared to other sushi restaurants, especially the lunch/dinner deals. For example, my Funamori Don (which is limited to only 10 servings a day) came with several pieces of fish, a generous portion of brown rice, and a miso soup for only $18. I consider that a steal in this age of inflation. The quality of the fish, though, was a tad disappointing, as it didn't taste the freshest, and the tamago (one of my favorite pieces in any sushi meal) was borderline stale. The menu is huge and covers basically everything you could want, even if you don't like raw fish. I got a kick out of some of the dish names, like Lightly Pickled Affair, You're Oil I Need, and Batter Up Fish Cakes. The staff was super friendly and came by often to check up on how we were doing. Very comfortable and clean inside.

I am always surprised at how full I am when I leave! I'm stuffed every time. There is complementary miso soup with all of the bowls I've tried, outlined below. I really loved all of the bowls I've tried but my favorites are probably the Sake Aisuru Don and Kuromon Don. I just prefer more salmon to more tuna though, and they're all very good! Food: - Sake Aisuru Don: their classic all-salmon bowl! I loved the larger cuts of salmon, and I was pleasantly surprised that even the more pulverized salmon was flavorful! - Kuromon Don: loved the yellowtail in this! Each fish comes with two pieces (except the mackerel for which there are four), and I liked the sampler style for the salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and izumidai. - Maguro Toro Don: so much tuna! And all such high quality. The otoro was so fatty that it practically melted in my mouth without chewing. - Sake Maguro Hamachi Don: a mix of salmon, blue fin tuna, and yellowtail. I liked the yellowtail in this a lot and found that it stood out the most from the other two fish in this particular bowl!

The second time I went back, I ordered take out so I could eat it at the airport for dinner. I ordered the Sake Maguro Hamachi don, added ikura and negitoro. Again, so impressed with the quality of the fish and the size of it. They didn't skimp out and really enjoyed the thickness of the sashimi despite it only being 3 pieces. It was a very satiating bowl. Cant wait to come back next time again!

XO Seafood Udon: The restaurant specifically labeled it "wok-tossed," and it truly had a wonderful wok-hei鑊氣 (wok aroma), with an irresistible fragrance as soon as it arrived at the table. The XO sauce was extremely rich, sweet and umami, and the udon noodles were soft on the outside and bouncy on the inside; the sauce was glossy, smooth, but not greasy, allowing it to coat the noodles evenly and infuse them with flavor. The shrimp, squid, and scallops were all fresh and large, making for a very satisfying meal. The shrimp, in particular, were coated with a thin layer of starch before being pan-fried, adding layers of texture and locking in the juices. This plate removed the scallions and onions to suit my taste, and if you like spicy food, adding a little chili oil would greatly enhance the flavor. The restaurant had an elegant and refined ambiance, and the service was attentive, making it a very relaxing place.

When I made the reservation online I put that the occasion it was for was my birthday- I notice that most restaurants don't pay attention to this on OpenTable, but Fuji definitely did! We were seated quickly and with no issue at all, despite it being pretty crowded. The vibe was intimate and classy- a great spot for date night, or for dinner with your parents. At our table was a card (in the pictures) which was such a nice touch and was a great start to the meal. Our waitress was awesome, and it seemed like there was a floor manager too that was making sure everyone was happy. It felt like the staff truly cared and wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time and experience. Our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and was very helpful with the menu. Speaking of the menu, I was very pleased to see the amount of vegetarian dishes! You don't see that often at Japanese restaurants! For our appetizers we got the lobster Rangoon and spicy edamame. Technically the tofu is an app but you would never guess that from the portion size. The edamame were outstanding! They were spicy as expected and were so tasty. We demolished the whole bowl. The Rangoons were also amazing- the chunks of lobster were divine. I myself love lobster and crab Rangoons, so a combo?! Amazing. Both the edamame and lobster Rangoons are can't misses. For our entrees/ mains we got the crispy soy noodles, miss Waldorf roll, sweet potato roll, tofu, and fried rice. The miss Waldorf roll is amazing, and I can not wait to go back and get more sushi. Truly the best sushi I have had in boston. There are other upscale sushi restaurants I have been to that charge a pretty penny but taste like grocery store sushi. Fuji is not one of those- it was truly exceptional sushi. The sweet potato roll was also delicious! I am very picky about my sweet potato rolls and had one that I have dreamt about since I had it in 2022. I have finally found a sweet potato roll that matches my standards. The crispy soy noodles were also amazing! They reminded e of one of my favorite restaurants when I was a kid and it filled me with such joy to eat something with that flavor. The serving size was pretty big too, and they were not shy on the shrimp! Note though, they were a tad oily (I added a little bit of soy sauce to balance it out). The fried rice was also very good and tasted like a good bowl of comfort fried rice. My parents ate it with the tofu and liked it! The only dish I would want some change in is the tofu- it wasn't bad but compared to the other dishes it definitely lacked the flavor punch you get in the rest of the dishes. The sauce was okay with it. After dinner our waitress brought a slice of vanilla crepe cake and ice cream! This was such a nice touch and it was SO good!!!!! It was the first time I ever had crepe cake but I loved it! I'm not sure if they have a dessert menu or not (we weren't asked if we wanted to see one) but I would love to go back and get that cake again! Overall I am beyond happy that I picked this spot for my birthday- I had an amazing experience and amazing food. Will definitely be back!
