Great casual sushi spot in Newbury in Boston. Their sushi rice is specially seasoned that includes balsamic vinegar. They were good at making sure we were aware which items couldn't be changed for allergies. Got a multi course lunch set for $36 which was a great deal. Highlights were the appetizers and charamushi.

Tasty fresh food, prices are decent, but service is not great. Menu is really ample, including tofu dishes.

I came here for lunch on a weekend and was able to get a seat quickly at the bar. The waitress was very helpful and gave us great suggestions for what to order. The food also came out super quickly. I got the 3 handrolls and enjoyed all of them! The one thing I didn't love was the cream cheese in the salmon hand roll but that's just my personal preference. My boyfriend absolutely loved the chefs selection of nigiri!

Wow I have been sleeping on this place! The menu is HUGE so try a few things before you decide! The staff is super nice, it's easy to walk in and a bigger space in the back than you would think! The quality of the fish is really good--the heavenly otoro and salmon cuts are expensive but SUCH good pieces of sushi that I think they are worth the splurge. The menu also has a nice mix of expensive items and more affordable deals! I have gotten the Dinner Meal Set which is such a great deal for the amount of food you get. Overall, this is a great spot for a casual night out, good quality sushi, and a reasonably priced meal.

Sakabayashi Sushi Tavern is such a great find in Back Bay! Their menu has so many delicious options and since we wanted to try as much as possible, we decided to go with the dinner set course for $50. For the price you get a ton of food so it's a great deal! The service is really fast and efficient with each course coming out promptly. My favorites were the sashimi platter and hand rolls. The dessert options were also really good! The restaurant is super cute and fun inside and has a good amount of seating if you're looking to stop by. I will definitely be back when I'm in Back Bay!

I opted for the dinner set because there's so many options but this was the best balance of trying different things at a fixed price. My favorite was the potato salad which came in a sphere shape and you're supposed cut it in half with a spoon, mix and mash it altogether. There's like a preserved egg yolks with ikura, potato as the outer layer and seasoning. It's definitely creative and fun. Next on my favorite was the tempura. Perfectly fried and the veggies/ seafood they used was crisp. Love that they provided different types of salt. The tuna cuts weren't my favorite because the way it was cut, there was lots of tendon making it hard to chew. The stir fries soba was tasty and filling (and a bit greasy) But otherwise, I really enjoyed my set dinner menu. Service was attentive though I felt like my waitress was a bit rude at first when we ordered - like she was fed up about something. She came around later, rest of the staff were friendly and welcoming.

One of the worst customer service experiences I've had in Boston. We waited several minutes at the entrance without any communication after being asked whether we had a reservation. What truly disappointed me, however, was the attitude of one staff member. My phone was about to die (around 5%), and I politely asked whether I could borrow a charger for just a few minutes so I could call an Uber to get home safely. There was a charger visibly available near the entrance, but the staff member immediately refused, saying it was her personal charger and that they didn't have a compatible one. After I repeatedly explained my situation, she reluctantly allowed me to charge for only about five minutes before taking it back. Thankfully, another staff member later noticed my situation and kindly helped me charge my phone. She was the only reason this experience wasn't a complete disaster. What made this even more disappointing is that the first staff member and I are both Asian. During my visit, I personally felt that she appeared much warmer and friendlier toward some of the white customers than she was toward me. That was my impression, and it left me feeling unwelcome. I sincerely hope she treats future customers with more kindness and empathy, regardless of who they are. Hospitality isn't just about serving food--it's about treating people with basic kindness and respect. Unfortunately, this experience left a very negative impression, and I won't be returning.

Bad tastes and bad service The food was very disappointing, and the service was extremely slow. We waited a long time, and they still didn't bring out the final dessert until much later. Honestly, for this price, the quality and taste were not worth it at all. Almost everything was overly salty, and it did not taste like authentic Japanese sushi. The food lacked freshness and balance. I would not come back, and I would not recommend this place.

I was excited to finally come eat at Sakabayashi in person after having only ordered takeout from here. We came around lunchtime on a Thursday and it was pretty busy, but not enough to have to wait for a table for two. I got the Lunch Course and chose the Umai Chawanmushi and Salmon Ikura Don for my main dishes. This was honestly great value for $36 considering how full I was. Everything came out fresh and I have no complaints. The space is nice and bright, and sitting in the back makes you forget you're on busy Boylston Street. Service was also friendly and efficient. I would definitely come back!

We got 2 lunch sets - the Unagi & Omelet Wow Mountain Bowl (which comes with miso soup) and the Dine Out Boston lunch set of spicy tofu, karaage, nigiri 8, and miso soup. It was altogether plenty of food for 2, and we both left quite satisfied. I really liked the unagi and omelet wow mountain bowl. The unagi in particular was cooked perfectly tender. The omelet on the other hand was a little overdone for me, but altogether the dish was quite good - especially with the eel sauce! The nigiri was great as well, with my favorites being the salmon and unagi pieces. Spicy tofu was pretty small with only 2 slices, but I liked the spicy bits. Karaage was also decent but didn't stand out. I loved the interior with lantern decor, and it was quite a good lunch spot. The waitress who seated us and took our order was quite rude, but all the other staff were very nice. There's a QR code for a customer service survey that gives you 5% off the current visit.

I loved it! If you want traditional sushi, come here! There are so many different combos and deals. I got a tuna special combo, Magnificent 8, and the Chef's Pick, the Trio Combo and the Boston roll. Yum yum. Had it with lots of affordable warm saki. Service was fine. Restaurant is nicely modern and clean. Will come again!

Food Review: Sakabayashi - 665 Boylston St, Boston, MA If you're craving elegant Japanese cuisine in the heart of Boston, Sakabayashi is the spot to check out! We indulged in their $78 dinner course, and it was well worth every penny. From delicate flavors to thoughtful plating, this spot knows how to make every bite count. Dinner Course Rundown: The amuse bouche was salmon and prosciutto sush press. I've never had basil pesto on sushi before what a treat! Assorted Appetizers - A beautiful selection of six small bites. My favorite was the potato salad, creamy and comforting with a slight Japanese twist. Wakame Miso Soup - Light, warming, and a great start to the meal. Chef's Special Seafood Carpaccio - A standout! The fish was fresh and tender, drizzled with a citrusy sauce that made each bite sing. Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll - Our pick for the hot dish. Flavorful, crunchy, and a fun fusion twist on a classic roll. Hand Roll - We chose the spicy tuna (because we are such suckers for it!) one--delicious and fresh with the perfect balance of rich and sharp. Nigiri Selection - Seven pieces, including seared otoro, uni gunkan (not my favorite I've had better uni!), ikura, and scallop. The Heavenly Seared Otoro lived up to its name. Catalana Dessert - A sweet, smooth finish that resembled a Japanese crème brûlée. Light but indulgent. A La Carte Must-Tries: Salmon Carpaccio ($14) - With your choice of wasabi or carpaccio sauce--fresh, buttery, and tangy. Tuna Tsukune (Grilled Tuna Meatballs) ($8) - Juicy and satisfying, perfect with a dab of mayo or miso glaze. These were a 10/10. You have to get these when you come. Tuna Tartare with Bread($9) - Clean, bold flavors with a perfect textural balance. Very shareable! Ambiance: 8/10 Wooden booths give it a warm, intimate vibe while still feeling modern and relaxed. Affordability (for Boston sushi): 7/10 While it's not a budget spot, the quality matches the price--especially for a multi-course meal or if you're used to sushi pricing in Boston. They even have locations in Japan, so you know it's legit. Final Score: 9/10 Great for a date night, a special dinner, or just treating yourself to top-tier Japanese flavors. Highly recommend the dinner course if you want to taste a bit of everything!

Wow I can't believe I hadn't been here before!! This place was incredible!! The sushi was super fresh and they had so many tasty options! I loved trying some new dishes that I wouldn't normally order but every single bite I had was so delicious!! The decor is beautiful and the restaurant is a great spot. The staff was incredible and super attentive. They gave us suggestions on some of their most popular dishes (and we loved them all)! The magnificent 8 is an assortment of 8 sushi pieces that are all perfectly crafted and super fresh! If you are adventurous and like trying new sushi this is a must get!! Every bite was so delicious!! The sakabayashi funamori was also a great sashimi assortment. We also tried the sakabayashi California roll which is a Cali roll topped with salmon and Tobiko that was delish! The Fujiyama carpaccio was super fresh and light with the perfect sauce and had seared salmon and ikura. If you're looking for non-sushi bites we also tried the karaage which was perfectly crispy and the mini tonkatsu ramen which was super flavorful! Overall would absolutely recommend going here and I can't wait to go back!

This is a 12 out of 10, and I don't just hand those ranking out willy-nilly. I came here through winters first, which is honestly the ideal origin story. The Spicy Hot Udon in Boston winter is the equivalent of someone putting a blanket on your shoulders without being asked. The broth hits deep, the udon has that perfect chew that tells you someone back there actually cares and respect their noodles, and you leave feeling genuinely restored rather than just full. Then summer came and I almost made the mistake of skipping it entirely--because soup in summer? I mean c'mon. But silly me, I should've tried the Spicy Cold Udon sooner than later. Same exceptional broth. Same gorgeous chewy noodles. But served cold in an absolutely refreshing way. I mourned all the summers I could have been eating this. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the service moves at a pace that impresses you without making you feel like you're being processed; the atmosphere is nice and simple too. Anyway: hot or cold, winter or summer, just go, get some, sip some amazing broth, bask in all of it!

I always worry that…read moretraditional flavors will be toned down to appeal to a broader audience, so I walked into Yume Ga Arukara with a little hesitation. Those concerns disappeared almost immediately. Looking around the dining room, I noticed many of the customers were of Asian descent, which gave me confidence that I was in the right place. I grabbed a seat at the counter, and it ended up being the best seat in the house. Watching the cooks prepare each bowl from scratch was fascinating. They hand-cut the udon noodles, cooked every component to order, and assembled each bowl with incredible care. It felt like dinner and a show all in one. On a rainy Boston afternoon, the Spicy Hot Niku Udon with an onsen egg was exactly what I needed. The broth was deeply flavorful, with rich dried fish and beef notes that tasted comforting without being overwhelming. The thinly sliced beef was tender and perfectly cooked, while the freshly made udon noodles were the star of the bowl. They were silky, smooth, and wonderfully chewy. The tempura flakes added a satisfying salty crunch that contrasted nicely with the soft noodles. The star of the dish, onsen egg, stole the show. The white part had an almost custard-like texture and the yolk was rich and creamy, blending effortlessly into the broth to make every bite even more luxurious. My only suggestion would be to offer sliced jalapeños as an optional side garnish. As a Korean who grew up enjoying spicy foods, I found myself wanting just a little more heat. I understand that Japanese cuisine typically isn't as fiery, but having the option to add fresh jalapeños would have taken an already excellent bowl to the next level for my personal taste.

The restaurant focuses mostly on soba or udon noodle dishes with a good selection between hot and cold options. It's not going to be the best udon or soba you've ever had. HOWEVER, I tried the cold ikura & uni cold soba and LOVED it. It's seasonal, so I tried that one out and was extremely surprised about how much I enjoyed the bowl. Not too much soup and the uni didn't completely obliterate when I stirred it up. They do use American wasabi though, and I found it superfluous to the dish and wished it was served on the side. But regardless, despite not having some extremely high quality noodles, the flavor and experience of the bowl itself was super pleasant. I ended up coming back the very next day because I wanted to try their clam soba. The clam soba only comes hot, which is a bit unfortunately because I actually think a cold clam soba with some lemon or yuzu would be phenomenol. I've been seeing recipes for it online so I've been wanting to try it, but their clam soba is a lot more standard and hot. They had a very good amount of clams in it, but I generally like their cold soba better. Still good, but didn't give me that feeling of needing to come back the very next day like I did with the ikura-uni combo. Overall, I'd still come back when I'm in downtown!

XO Seafood Udon: The restaurant specifically labeled it "wok-tossed," and it truly had a wonderful wok-hei鑊氣 (wok aroma), with an irresistible fragrance as soon as it arrived at the table. The shrimp, squid, and scallops were all fresh and large, making for a very satisfying meal. The shrimp, in particular, were coated with a thin layer of starch before being pan-fried, adding layers of texture and locking in the juices. When I made the reservation online I put that the occasion it was for was my birthday- I notice that most restaurants don't pay attention to this on OpenTable, but Fuji definitely did! We were seated quickly and with no issue at all, despite it being pretty crowded. The vibe was intimate and classy- a great spot for date night, or for dinner with your parents. At our table was a card (in the pictures) which was such a nice touch and was a great start to the meal. Our waitress was awesome, and it seemed like there was a floor manager too that was making sure everyone was happy. It felt like the staff truly cared and wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time and experience. Our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and was very helpful with the menu. Speaking of the menu, I was very pleased to see the amount of vegetarian dishes! You don't see that often at Japanese restaurants! For our appetizers we got the lobster Rangoon and spicy edamame. Technically the tofu is an app but you would never guess that from the portion size. The edamame were outstanding! They were spicy as expected and were so tasty. We demolished the whole bowl. The Rangoons were also amazing- the chunks of lobster were divine. I myself love lobster and crab Rangoons, so a combo?! Amazing. Both the edamame and lobster Rangoons are can't misses. For our entrees/ mains we got the crispy soy noodles, miss Waldorf roll, sweet potato roll, tofu, and fried rice. The miss Waldorf roll is amazing, and I can not wait to go back and get more sushi. Truly the best sushi I have had in boston. There are other upscale sushi restaurants I have been to that charge a pretty penny but taste like grocery store sushi. Fuji is not one of those- it was truly exceptional sushi. The sweet potato roll was also delicious! I am very picky about my sweet potato rolls and had one that I have dreamt about since I had it in 2022. I have finally found a sweet potato roll that matches my standards. The crispy soy noodles were also amazing! They reminded e of one of my favorite restaurants when I was a kid and it filled me with such joy to eat something with that flavor. The serving size was pretty big too, and they were not shy on the shrimp! Note though, they were a tad oily (I added a little bit of soy sauce to balance it out). The fried rice was also very good and tasted like a good bowl of comfort fried rice. My parents ate it with the tofu and liked it! The only dish I would want some change in is the tofu- it wasn't bad but compared to the other dishes it definitely lacked the flavor punch you get in the rest of the dishes. The sauce was okay with it. After dinner our waitress brought a slice of vanilla crepe cake and ice cream! This was such a nice touch and it was SO good!!!!! It was the first time I ever had crepe cake but I loved it! I'm not sure if they have a dessert menu or not (we weren't asked if we wanted to see one) but I would love to go back and get that cake again! Overall I am beyond happy that I picked this spot for my birthday- I had an amazing experience and amazing food. Will definitely be back!
