Memorial Day Weekend and I hate to bring in a vehicle to guys who really deserves the weekend off. Usually I go to Kenny's Auto Repair near Oakridge but man they were full and I needed this repair at least looked at quickly! Called Union Auto Care around 9AM (they have been on mind for quite sometime after reading all the Yelpers' review and I really wanted to find a good alternative to Kenny's). Spoke to Norman Dinh and explained to him that my 00 Durango 4.7 Liter was spiking in temperature during idle traffic and some normal city driving. Said to him if he can take a look at my Thermostat to see if its shut. Norman said drop by and I'll look at the car. Arrived to the shop @ 9:30Am, 2 cars in the bay and 3 other in the parking stalls not including mine. Met Norman and again I explained to him what my Durango was doing. Norman said "3 things could be happening, Coolant Temperature Sensor, Electric Fan not kicking in or Shut Thermostat". I said this is my wife's baby and with 189K on the readout this baby needs to last a bit more. He said no worries, my Camry over there over 300K with the same engine and tranny! I said good cause this Durango is still pretty much all OEM except the radiator! And so I left the Durango behind and waited for my wife to pick me up. 3-330PM Norman calls and tells me the car is done! I accidentally hung up on him twice cause we were at L&L BBQ eating and when I tried to pick up my cell I rejected his calls twice! Ugh my bad!!! So I called him back and told him we'll be there in a bit. We got to the shop and guess what all the cars are GONE! Dang he and the crew fixed every single car that was there. My Durango was the only one left. My issue with the Durango...worn, torn and bad Electric Fan. The Fan wouldn't kick in when it was suppose to. This fan has been part of the car since 2000! Guess it was it's time. Showed me the fan, head it click on when it was suppose to and we were off to celebrate the weekend and Norman can celebrate his as well. One thing I noticed about Norman is that he's not the type to really mis-lead you or anything. If you explain to him of you car's issues and what it is doing he can narrow down the time and look at the root cause with more urgency. From there he and the crew can trace down the issue and fix the car. Remember its like going to the Doctor's, explain your symptoms well and you will be fine or even better. Beat around the bush and hide some facts and well guess what...you still feel the same or worse. That is how your car will be. Anyways...dropped off my 04 Mazda3 at home and hopped in the Durango to finish the rest of our errands/chores, my wife was reviewing the receipt and my wife says..."babe did you ask for this to be done?" I looked at the receipt, then I looked up the on the upper left hand window by my sun visor and I was amazed! We had the biggest smile that late afternoon and rest assured. Once again Norman at Union Auto Care came to the rescue. I had a bad alternator and had the car towed to UAC. I was headed out of town so told Norman I could leave it for two days and it wasn't urgent. Norman got back to me that day to confirm it was an alternator and went over the cost of the replacement and an additional item that might need to be repaired once he got the car apart. He said that he was hoping the other thing was not damaged but wanted to let me know up front. The next day (earlier than expected) he let me know that the car was done, I didn't need the extra part, and that he gave me a free oil change. This is the best shop I've ever had in 34 years of mostly crappy cars. Norman is a funny, no BS kind of guy and he only fixes what needs fixing and explains everything to you. If you refer clients you will get a discount. If you are a long time customer you will get a discount. It makes me happy every time I pay a bill. How weird is that? At the risk of raising your expectations, I've never waited more than a day for an appointment or 2 days for repairs even if it was rebuilding a transmission. So I hate to be the one to do this, but... I called and made an appointment for 4:15pm yesterday afternoon with Norman. He assured me that if I made an appointment that he would wait for me. I leave work early to make sure I get there on time. I show up and the garage is closed. I park my car, walk into the gas attendant station and ask where he is. The guy responds, "Oh, he closed early today. He didn't have any customers." And I'm thinking, "Um, HELLO?! I'm a customer!" So there you have it. No phone call asking to reschedule or say that he was closing early; no nothing. I saw all the great reviews on here and that's why I chose to take my car here. BUT he didn't bother to call and/or cancel my appointment, and that's just rude. So if you don't fall within a window of time that's convenient for him apparently, good luck. read more

It is truly hard to find an honest mechanic. It's an oxymoron like an honest politician or a lawyer. Well, Norman from Union Auto Care is the ultimate exception. I found UAC on Yelp a few years back. Located on the side of a gas station, Norman and his mechanics wrench out cars like crazy! I call Norman for routine oil changes, smog checks, and major repairs. Norman will diagnose, call you with options and proceed with the agreed repairs. Never once have I felt cheated or swindled by Norman because of his genuine desire to provide great customer service. I went in today because I was having issues with my brakes, my filter, plus I needed an oil change, and my tires rotated. Since I was there I decided to have him fix my car visor too since it wasn't staying put. He was very detailed with his pricing, explaining to me what he'll be doing and so forth. He also offered me 10% off of the total price...which was GREAT! Well, it turned out that after he inspected my car, my coolant was leaking! I also needed to have my water pump, gasket, coolant, and thermostat replaced, along with my brake pads (which were worn thin)! I was almost freaking out because I could not believe that I was driving my car with it being the way it is. I was also afraid about how much it'll all cost. I have a 2007 Camry and I had thought that it was one of the most reliable cars out there. Well...I was wrong. My fiance and I spoke with Norman about the damages in my car and he was very patient with explaining the purpose of each car part that needed replacement, showing us the difference between one good part vs. what was in my car (he had parts in the shop to show us). I don't know anything about cars so having a visual really helped me. He was very thorough and detailed in his explanations. I really liked how he took the time to talk to us about it all despite the fact that he had his parking lot filled with cars to repair! Anyhow, Norman broke down his pricing and offered us the BEST deal that we've seen using genuine Toyota parts. It was SO SO much more less than what I had expected! His labor costs were so much less than that offered by dealerships. Which says a lot because it shows that he really cares about you being safe out there rather than just to make money off of you. Had a great experience here. Brought in my recently purchased $1,000 beater with the engine light on for a smog check (fingers crossed!). Norman, who was friendly and professional throughout, informed me that according to CA law, he couldn't do the inspection with the engine light on. A quick, and relatively cheap diagnosis revealed a leak somewhere in the fuel system. Cue scary music...To find the leak source would require a more expensive, time consuming diagnosis involving much dismantling. Luckily, Norman had an inexpensive hunch. Maybe it was just a bad fuel cap. He sold me a new fuel cap, reset the engine light, and told me to drive at least X miles and watch the light. Several days later and much more than X miles, the engine light had yet to turn on. Yes! The car passed smog, which was only like $40, and I was happily on my way. P.S. A smaller, corner auto-repair shop tucked away next to the gas station. It's proximity to Xilinx (where I work) and good reviews persuaded me to give this place a try. It didn't hurt that Xilinx employees get a 10 percent discount. As the previous reviews have stated, Norman is a really cool guy. He's very honest about the work he does, and his labor is very affordable compared to other shops or the stealership. I brought my RAV4 there for a 60K tune-up, and front brake pad change, and rotor resurfacing. The bill including the 60K service was just over 400. What a great price! Especially when others were charging easily double that. Drove away later on the same day, and my brakes and car felt VERY good. I actually liked the service/price so much that I ended up going back and bringing a second car in for an oil change and front/rear brake service. The car's brakes were in TERRIBLE condition, but he was able to bring them back to like-factory new. Highly recommended. read more

I am really impressed with Norman Dihn who owns Union Auto Care. I chose him based on his great reviews on Yelp and because he is nearby. My car needed a new set of lower control arms, per diagnosis by Honda when they replaced the battery recently under warranty. I had been feeling this through the steering wheel, so no surprise. I already had a price from my old mechanic who had retired, and Norman, unprompted, quoted the exact same price. Like my old mechanic, he too wanted to use a genuine Honda part because he did not trust the aftermarket for this particular part (the bearings don't last and can't be separately pressed out and replaced). After having the car, he also reco'd new brake pads. I was expecting that too because at the last service my mechanic noted "will need new pads at next service". Again genuine Honda pads - he knows what I know which is that the aftermarket brakes squeal. He said I would probably need new rotors because of their condition. I told him, I felt they were just resurfaced not long ago. He said he would bet it was at least 3 years ago. I checked my records, exactly 4 years ago. We decided to resurface again although he thought that they may vibrate or squeak, but it worked, and they are fine with just resurfacing. Now comes the bill. Since he had the tires off anyways for the brakes, he told me he waived the $10 tire rotation charge. No charge for the oil change either "Free oil change whenever the repair bill is over $350". Oh yeah, and 10% Yelp discount on the labor. A smog test was $50, including the fees that go to the state, only $2 more expensive than when I shopped this around for the last smog test 2 years ago. ​Then I asked him about engine or transmission sludge because a friend mentioned that problem in his Odyssey.​ Yup, Norman said, the Honda transmission has a weak design and picks up dirt in the tranny fluid. He reco's replacing the fluid annually. He owns a 2006 Odyssey and has 220,000 miles on it, which he credits in part to replacing the tranny fluid. Later, I took in my Prius. Previously, the Jiffy Lube guys had insisted that Toyota required synth oil in this car. I didn't remember that from previous oil changes, but hey that's what was in their computer. Norman put in regular motor oil, which led me to check the owner's manual. Sure enough, synthetic not required. Thank you Norman. Bottom line, Norman is a really knowledgeable guy who runs an honest shop with very fair prices. read more
