Many non-dealer shops really do inflate their jobs, then get you with finding "more" things to fix that are hard to self detect or see, especially with older cars that have lots of mileage. Renson might not be cheap, but call it fair pricing for professional work that gets done right, no hassle. While the car is being evaluated and worked on, they always give timely calls to update me if things come up. I've had our car towed to the shop for unexpected issues and they were able to turn the car around in a day. Like with any car repair, ask a lot of questions, Renson does a good job of honest answering for anything I put to them.

We had to take our Prius in for a smog check (why though, it's a Prius!) and I called in to to make an appointment, which was easy to do. When we arrived, they told us where to position our car, asked for the DMV paperwork, and quickly went about performing the smog check. They performed it quickly, did it for a transparent fixed price (some places charge more for certain cars, including Prius's, which seems strange), and got us on our away quickly. The price was reasonable too - about $60 all in. They pointed us to some chairs where we could sit and wait while they did the test - nothing fancy, but it's good to have an option to sit. For whatever reason, smog checks are something I kind of dread, even though it's always painless. Having a local place that can do this quickly and efficiently for a reasonable price is always worth calling out.

I have lived in Los Gatos for over ten years. These guys came in about 5 years ago and though I had heard some negative things I was in a rush. Mistake...Do not go here, under any circumstances -these people will rip you off. I took my car here last week to get an oil repair. According to a flyer an oil change was 20 bucks (the wall said 24, I thought about not doing it because it was already fishy, because of the difference, but went with it anyway). I took it in and when I came to pick it up they had added it up to 35 dollars. They claimed that the oil filter was more expensive (they priced the filter 25 bucks---these filters cost 8 bucks, I called the dealership afterward and checked) because of the car-I call Foul since I spoke with my own dealership and they said it was standard. Go in for 20 end up paying 34 plus tax? Though I expressed my unhappiness the man behind the counter began yelling, and I mean, screaming, and calling me a liar (as to what? No idea). They essentially forced me into paying and, as big GD is my witness, as I am waiting for them to get my keys ANOTHER customer starts getting worked up about the EXACT SAME THING (for a Subaru, looked like a 2003 or 05). They have a scam going. I went on the BAR- Cali's governmental consumer protection for this type of business, and they have TWO FORMAL complaints against them for, what looked like 1. not giving customers written estimates and 2...surprise, bait and switch type business. Do not even try this deceitful auto repair shop. It is old style of bait and scam. At first the owner, Phuong Nguyen, told you the car problems are minor, then he called you to jack up the prices for additional problems that he "found" during your car was held up at his shop. He even applies this scam to Vietnamese customers let alone the non-Viet customers. We do not know and understand why this fraud guy owner and this Los Gatos Autocare shop are still in business at this good Los Gatos town. In addition, the owner's manner is rude and temper when you challenge his "increase" price for additional problems of your car while you left your car there to repair the original problem. Stay far away from this unethical merchant or you will throw away your hard earned money for his "additional" problems on your car. Are the "good" reviews on Yelp for this scam auto shop from his friends and "special treat" customes who he would do favor for the good review on the surface. You go ahead and check this guy out at your own risk to repair your vehicle. Don't blame yourself for not being warned by us. Yelp rating is not update and accurate many times. I have known this shop for years and though very packed with cars an unorganized lot with no waiting area for guests I always thought there prices were fair . I took my car in for a simple oil change and tire rotation . I thought as I had an appointment I would be in and out in 30 minutes . Wrong . It took over 2 hours and the price was $150! The oil filter was marked up to $29 which means the shop charged $125 for labor .. For a simple oil change and tire rotation . Give me a break .bi should have gone to Land Rover where it was covered except for the tire rotation at $125. Except with the dealership they will give you a loaner or sit in a calm waiting room for something this simple . I will never go back here and no longer recommend this business after 20 years . Also the mechanics really can't communicate and where to pay is a huge chaotic mess . Avoid I am sorry to say . As I was getting ready to leave for a trip a coolant light went on in my new car. Ugh! I had no idea where anything was on this new car. I checked the manual and YouTube, of course, it requires a special coolant only available at the dealer! I drove by Los Gatos Autocare and they were swamped with customers as always. I decided to stop anyway to see if they could offer some advice. I am so happy I stopped here! They had customers lined up and they still took the time to not only help me with my coolant and turn off the warning light but they also took the time to explain how the system works and what to do if it happened again while I was on the road. But once my window regulator broke they asked for inspection first and then charged separately for repair when i explicitly asked to replace window regulator. It is pretty easy to diagnose broken window regulator based on action / noise. I could have brought them part and would be willing to pay for repair if it wasn't window regulator. But tech insisted on "diagnose first" and fix later. i did this and basically paid twice for labor of assembling / disassembly of the door frame. they lost me as a client forever after that.

But, I'm feeling generous. Before coming to Michael for an oil change, I avoided gas station repairmen who seemed a little too "how much you got?" when asking "how much?". I foolishly went to places that do things in a jiffy, speedee kinda way, only to be hit with shoddy work and shady upsells (i.e. $60 to top off my air filter oil). But because he is within walking distance, I saw him about my problematic Kia Soul, which he diagnosed for free, and I felt like I trusted the guy, even if I barely understood him.
