I've been a frequent visitor of Laconia for the past 59 years. This diner has had its ups and downs but is now our favorite spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The current owner, Rose, has made it better than it has ever been... the food is always fresh and prepared perfectly. The staff is friendly and service is generally very quick. They are very accommodating as to dietary restrictions and can modify most of their dishes to meet individual requirements. So new to yelp, partly for this review. Service was seriously lacking, it was cold and almost rude. Went for dinner because of positive reviews and we were rather lost as to how these reviews happened. They were out of over half their menu, didn't serve either order correctly and what they did serve was... edible? Lacked flavor except the Cole slaw. That had plenty of flavor. Not the flavor of Cole slaw mind you, but flavor. Only reason I am giving this place two stars instead of one was because the food didn't come back up causing me to taste it a second time. read more

The girl who apparently just works Mondays was extremely rude, I understand she had a few customers and was the only one working but upon arrival she didn't say anything to us, not a single "hi how are you, I'll be right with you" instead she continued to walk past us, and when she did come to take our order she didn't bother to say hi sorry for your wait she just gave me attitude and said "what do you want to drink" after ordering my drinks I was already a little upset with the service I didn't even want to eat anymore, I decided I wanted some soup and I asked her what the soup of the day was and she didn't even bother to acknowledge me, she just said "it's up on the board" and after a while of looking I couldn't find where on the menu above her would say the soups, it was in tiny tiny tiny writing that I could barley see. I already waisted so much of my time driving here to just be disappointed, won't find me coming here on a Monday nor do I recommend coming here on a Monday unless you want horrible service from a rude waitress who clearly didn't care. I went down the road to Country Cook'n at The Lakeside and had great service, great food and a wonderful bowl of soup that none of your employees or cooks could offer me. I love this Diner. I've eaten here many, many times but only for breakfast. The food is consistently good and they are always coming up with creative specials every weekend. The service is quick and always friendly. I used to be a regular in the Weirs Beach area and I ate breakfast here almost every weekend. Now I'm only in the area every couple of months and I still make sure I stop in before going home. read more

Great little old school diner! Lobster stew was delicious, not to heavy and seasoned perfectly. Steak tips cooked perfectly too. Burgers, fries chicken... Everything we had was just delicious. Prices were great... Waitress was prompt and personable. I got the Windy City dog with fries. It was a kayem dog, Chicago style with tomatoes, relish, celery salt and hot peppers. Fantastic! Superlative food and service, have loved this place for the past few years! Owner is a delight! (me and my husband admiring the taps, owner gave us beer samples in the a.m. and she makes a killer bloody!). The owner is always present and treats her staff with pride and respect. "Friendly" diner, is putting it mildly, they are super. The food is fresh and hot. Poached eggs cooked to perfection, the hollandaise sauce-thinking about it makes my mouth water, great hash, always a dish of cabot butter for your toast (love the rye), home fries or their hash browns - whatever you are in the mood for are delicious! My husband loves the pancakes. Haven't been to Laconia in a couple of years but spent the last couple days at "The U" for breakfast". Same as it ever was. Miss the area. This has been one of my favorite local breakfast eateries, and I always thought their lunch was pretty good, but the last couple of times have been a little disappointing. Most recently, I stopped for lunch and ordered a cheeseburger, medium rare, and onion rings. The burger was poorly made, almost raw, greasy, and they added onion when I specifically said no onion. I had seated myself in the dining room, away from the counter and wait station. Don't do this! The waiter spent all of his time in the other room and never came back until I finished and had to flag him down for the check. Not what I have been accustomed to, and not a good experience. The Wife and I have eaten at the Union Diner several times in the last few weeks. That should say enough right there. The food is always good, portions are on the substantial side (no leaving hungry) and the staff and management are top notch when it comes to friendliness. We met Rose, the owner, and she has been there on every visit. I think it is important for an owner to be there if he/she wants a place to succeed, but I sure do hope she gets a day off when tourist season lets up. Always greeted with a smile, going to the Union Diner has been a great experience every time, and you can always hear Rose's laughter somewhere in the restaurant. Although I appreciate good food, quality service and a friendly environment in a restaurant, I rarely write reviews (which I am beginning to regret). My sister and I stopped into the Union Diner this morning around 11 after a stressful weekend filled with appointments with local florists/salons/linen rental companies, etc. for my upcoming wedding. We wanted to explore some of the local spots and get a feel for the town. The diner was pretty busy with the late breakfast crowd but we scored a few seats at the counter. Ther service was exceptional, we were greeted right away, poured some hot coffee and ordered mimosa's. I decided to order the "Veggie Benni" and it was loaded with fresh veggies, the eggs were poached perfectly and the sauce was perfect. My sister ordered 2 scrambled eggs, sausage, toast and homefries and I don't think there was a crumb left on her plate. The breakfast came out quickly despite the busy crowd. We asked the staff to recommend some local bakeries for cupcakes to purchase for the wedding and both the staff and nearby customers were eager to recommend some nearby spots. Overall I had a great experience and I will definitely return anytime I am in the Laconia area! read more

Great place for breakfast! I am sorry we discovered the Union Diner on the morning we were leaving Lake Winnipesaukee. Would love to have had dinner there. This is the first time I saw a menu with definitions of terms explaining how to order eggs. So when you order over easy the chef prepares eggs over easy and not over medium! This is an awesome place to eat lunch and breakfast at. I habe been here twice and its an excellent value and really good food. I know the ladies that own the restaurant and they are great people. Both times I've been habe been perfect and both times there was a boy I think is the busser that has been beyond helpful. He filled my coffee and personally picked out a coloring book for my son and was very funny and nice. We go there for lunch now everytime we are in laconia. read more
