Ate here for the first time tonight and Union exceeded every expectation. Albert C and team are top tier. From the spinach dip appetizer to the Caesar salad, rainbow roll, and vegetable fried rice, every single thing was outstanding. The food was fresh, flavorful, and one of those meals where every dish makes you say, "Okay, this might be my favorite thing I've had all night." Now, before anyone starts doing the math on that order... yes, I ate all of it. And no, I have absolutely no regrets. I even saved room for dessert. The signature sorbets were fantastic, especially the limoncello flavor, and the cheesecake was so ridiculously good it should come with a warning label. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people who stops to photograph their food before diving in, so you'll have to take my word for it. But trust me--the presentation was as impressive as the flavors. We visited for dinner and found the vibe to be energetic and lively. The hostess was unfortunately not very welcoming, but our server was excellent. We ordered the cheeseburger, branzino, brussel sprouts, and sea bass satay which were all wonderful and full of flavor minus the branzino. Took the opportunity to try out the lunch here since my friends have been recommending it. This was my second time here and I really do enjoy it. The service is amazing (Thomas was our server this time), and the ambiance is great. We sat outside and it was a great time. We started with drinks of course and I ended up getting the Lychee Lover Martini. My friends got the Bird of Paradise and the Tropic Thunder and honestly all of them were delicious. Different flavor profiles so it depends on what mood you're in. For food, I chose to do the Prix Fixe menu for $29 and went with the House Salad + Salmon Crispy Rice + Poke Bowl. The salad was phenomenal and the salmon crispy rice was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately the poke bowl wasn't that great. I ended up not finishing it. I tried my friend's dishes as well and her Pork Belly Cubano was good, but her Chili Lime Chicken was not -- the flavors were conflicting and didn't mesh well. We also ordered off the regular menu and really enjoyed the Fried Green Tomatoes and Tuna Crispy Rice. Overall, lunch wasn't bad. Definitely a great deal. We finally made it back to Union after not visiting since they first opened three years ago! Upon our arrival we were shocked on how busy it was for a Saturday night. We started with the Crispy Zucchini for the table, and it was outstanding - perfectly crispy and paired beautifully with the dill labneh and preserved lemon. Tried this out on a business trip with a coworker. Definitely better for a date night with a SO instead. Had a nice vibe and loud music. We ordered a representative sample of food starting with the wagyu tartare sushi and a tuna roll. Entrees included a prime rib sandwich for my friend and the wagyu skirt steak for me. We also ordered asparagus and more seasoned fries - I think rosemary - for the table. (We didn't realize his sandwich came with fries). A note about my steak. I wish restaurants would have a broader variety of weights on their cuts. Here there was an 8 oz wagyu skirt and a filet then it jumped up to a 16 oz ribeye. I prefer ribeye but I actually can't enjoy that much meat anymore. Something in between would be much appreciated. Another note. I was shocked to find the truffle butter was $12, when I assumed it was just an option offered by the server. Another alternative was chimmichurri. $3, 5, 7 maybe. But $12 for a small pat? C'mon. What was worse was the steak wasn't hot enough to melt that butter. And I had to ask for salt for the steak and the fries. Which they oddly offer with a grinder brought to the table by the server. The fries were kind of lifeless and not warm enough too. Look the sushi rolls were interesting and quite good. (But $24-36 for those was also pretty steep). The entrees less so. A 3.6 rounds to an over generous 4. Service was fine but a bit intermittent on a busy, but not overly busy night. read more

We had planned to go to First Watch based off of Yelp reviews but when we drove up, the wait was out the door. Union is located right next door so we decided to give them a shot. We were NOT disappointed. We assumed they were not busy because they did not offer breakfast (we wanted Sunday morning brunch). We were wrong. Not only did they have a nice brunch menu, there was no wait, we were able to sit on the patio, and they had live music. 10 out of 10 recommend the potatoes and the sausage. The ambiance is super trendy and lively, with a really hip, well-dressed crowd that makes it feel like a true "get dressed up and go out" kind of spot. The food was good across the board. I stumbled into this spot for lunch by total accident and it ended up being my favorite place in all of Tampa. I even went to multiple Michelin spots here and Union New American still beat them! The food is really good here. Service is decent. It is pricey, but definitely a spot to try. I highly recommend getting the tuna crispy rice. At dinner, you get four pieces. The crispy rice is really flavorful, and they put really delicious tuna on top. I also recommend their crispy chicken small plate. The chicken is also nicely seasoned and has a decent crispy texture to it. I really enjoyed the smoked eggplant enchiladas. For being a main course, it's quite a small entrée, but every bite is delicious. The only issue is staff. I came here twice, once eating at the restaurant, once doing a to-go order. The waitress helping with the Togo order was incredibly rude when I tried paying. She looked frustrated, unhappy, and was quite rude directly to me as I mentioned I wanted to pay with a third-party payment processor that they accept. At the end, I asked for my restaurant, and the waitress took my receipt that she had on her hand and crushed it in her hands into a ball. I was appalled, but luckily, I was able to get another receipt. If you come here, just go eat at the bar as the bartenders are friendly. I've been a loyal customer of Union New American and have visited more than 10 times, always leaving five-star reviews and recommending it to friends. Unfortunately, my recent experience with the management has completely changed my impression of this restaurant. When I reached out to reserve a table for 13 people ~ six couples and one individual ~ I requested 6 separate checks for the couples and 1 additional check for the solo guest. The response I received from manager Elena Ruiz was that their policy only allows 6 equally split checks, regardless of what each person orders. I tried to explain that splitting the bill equally isn't fair when some guests may spend $400 while others spend closer to $150. I was told this was done "for accuracy," which makes no sense ~ in fact, it's the opposite of accuracy. This rigid and dismissive approach toward a loyal customer was disappointing, especially given that our group would have easily spent over $2,500 for a special birthday dinner. Instead of accommodating a simple, reasonable request, the management chose convenience over customer experience. Sadly, after 2.5 years of being a regular, I won't be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants in the Tampa Bay area that not only serve great food but also treat their regular guests with flexibility and respect. read more

Everyone ordered the lunch special and it was a fairly decent sized portion of food. The Caesar salad, the zucchini blossoms, and steak frites were delicious and not bad for $37 plus tax/tip per person. The chili lime chicken appetizer also was a large portion. The steak was good. I liked the hearth roasted oysters but they were pretty overpriced and small. Restaurant was busy and fairly loud, glad we had a reservation. What an amazing experience. First of all, I have to call out our waiter, Gordy (like Gordon Ramsey). He was delightful. His wine recommendations were perfect. His food recommendations were spot on and my experience was a 10/10. We started with the roasted oysters and they were delicious. From there we got the prix fixe menu. The crispy tuna was phenomenal and the best I've ever had. And the wagyu steak was also amazing. I never take leftovers home but this was the exception. It was so good and perfectly medium rare. Cute rooftop edition to the Westshore area! I have been wanting to try this place for a while and we stopped here Friday for happy hour. The bar was full at about 4:45 so we waited until 5 PM until the rooftop lounge opened. They have great happy hour drink specials compared to what their regular pricing is. The rooftop was really nice once we got up there, but I will say this place does attract a very young crowd (too young for me) on the rooftop bar and that saying a lot as I'm in my late 20s. Such a great find! One of the few places with availability on Mother's Day weekend, and we were able to book it easily through OpenTable. Parking was plentiful--valet is available, but we didn't end up needing it. The service was prompt and genuinely friendly. Our server anticipated our questions and offered thoughtful recommendations and best-sellers before we even asked. We started with the Wagyu beef skewer (3/5)--they looked great but the texture was tough and rubbery, so not our favorite. The Japanese sweet potato side, on the other hand, was a surprise hit (5/5)--something unique and worth trying. The sushi really stood out. We tried the Rainbow Roll and King Crab Roll (both 5/5), and they exceeded expectations. It was a little pricey for sushi, but totally worth it. For drinks, we had a dry red wine and the Bird of Paradise cocktail. Both were well-balanced and beautifully presented, though I personally prefer mine a bit sweeter and less heavy on the alcohol. I'm not sure I would come back to eat at Union--the food, including a milk bread that was average and a $23 crunchy tuna roll that wasn't as crunchy as advertised--but I would definitely come back for the people watching and the sorta-South Beach vibes. I'm also surprised to share that the service almost seemed pushy: there was a waiter standing nearby every 3-4 minutes to ask if we had any questions about the menu or were ready to order, when it was clear that our party of three was still catching up, socially. (That might speak more to Tampa residents desiring fast service than anything I did or did not want, so I get that this just might be me.) Cool space. I'm typically not an oyster person but the house-made saltines and mignonette laden with shallots suckered me in; I'm glad they did. Quickly seated by the host and was served by a wonderful and great natured gentlemen named Javier. Let me start with no one in this party drank alcohol so there is no reviews on anything from the bar. We ordered two appetizers the fried zucchini and sticky buns, both were delish. As a party of four we each ordered our own dishes which consisted of: crispy chicken sandwich, union burger, shakshuka with a side of grits and prime rib sandwich . The chicken sandwich was very juicy which you can tell they brine the breast well. Shakshuka was great and so was the grits. My only gripe about the grits is they put a pat of butter which is optional to add IN the bowl of grits instead of just bringing it on a side dish. The only reason why I say this is I did not need that extra amount of butter, so you have to eat around the lump of butter, which made no sense to me. The prime rib sandwich was a bust and so was the au jus, the whole platter fell flat. Lastly the union burger was just that, a burger. Nothing to write about however it was finished. All in all we got 6 things off the menu and only one was terrible so I would say those are good odds. I would recommend not getting the prime rib sandwich or else your review might match mine.
