Flew in yesterday from New York for a quick business meeting + lunch and my client suggested this being less than 10 mins. from the airport. This restaurant is at the far end of the lobby of The Current hotel, Autograph Collection and a Marriott property. First impression is it's wonderful, understated chic and we were given a nice table with a great view of the pool and Tampa Bay. Staff and service on point. I believe Rafael was the one who attended to us and was also multi tasking at the same time as bartender and did pretty well balancing things. Thanks, Rafael! We came in when they were 10 mins to closing the kitchen for breakfast and we were there for lunch so we asked for coffee first and their coffee is pretty good. As for lunch we tried the Yellowfin Tuna Crispy Wonton and was pretty good! And for entrees, we both went for the Blackened Grouper Sandwich which was delicious! Also came with fries which were pretty good. I upgraded mine to Truffle fries, enjoyed it. The only thing I'd suggest is for the kitchen to have grilled salmon or chicken or steak and not just be limited to burger, tacos and sandwiches. This restaurant is really pretty and if you have the opportunity to sit outside on the patio, I recommend it, because it's serene and the layout is beautiful. Service was a little lacking, probably because we were outside (the only table outside) as most guests opt to sit indoors, but the bartender who was working inside was very nice and helpful. We went to the bar to get our own drinks, but our food was promptly delivered to us outside. We had the burger which came with well seasoned fries and I enjoyed the wanton tuna appetizer which was delicious. My friends and I stumbled upon Julian Restaurant at the Current Hotel after not getting a spot at a different restaurant, and we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! I ordered the signature dish, which was the Miso Sake Glazed Chilean Seabass. This dish packed so much flavor! The fish was cooked to perfection, and the mushroom rice paired with it so well. Came for date night. Was great from Reserved on open door. From the start was a little concerned since found that the restaurant was in the hotel and the picture on open door compared to what you get when you walk in are definitely different but do not let that deceive you: You get valet parking that is free with a validated stamp from the restaurant. It looks like a small hotel restaurant but the food is so much more than that. The Desire martini was excellent. The bar tender was great as well. He was very attentive. In the restaurant the server was great. We got the 16oz New York strip. Could cut it with a butter knife. Also got the fried artichokes. These were a little greasy but still not too bad. Good stop during my getaway to the bay. Had the local Cath 3 ways in this case snapper. Tremendous. Like have 3 different small plates. Inventive and well executed. Ample drink list including wines by the glass. Nice, crisp Pinot grigio rounded out the meal nicely. Key lime pie was spot on with a nice rye alongside. Best of all was attentive service from Diego at the bar. Never without beverage and good tips along the way. My guess is he's the "hidden" treasure here. Bay views... tremendous. Giving two stars for the atmosphere, it's a lovely setting in the posh hotel we were staying at. The server was poorly trained, no idea what half the menu was. They were out of the two of the maybe 10 items on the menu. Those were the two items that were gluten free. The rest of the staff cackled and yacked so loudly it was sitting in a Waffle House. I ordered the Grouper, my favorite choice everywhere with some sort of side that would be gluten free. I received dry, extremely overcooked grouper dumped on a bed of French fries. Not only was that catastrophe shameful it came with only a drizzle of the sauce but with a side of ketchup. We were staying at the Current but hadn't planned on dining in the lobby restaurant. However, after we hiked over to find the nearby Bambo Bar closed to the public (I have no idea why that's not clear on their Yelp page), we headed back to the hotel and decided to dine in the Julian. And we were happy we did, as we were seated by the window, looking out at the bay and the infinity pool, by an engaging server working the dining room that night. We had a filet mignon that was cooked to perfection, salmon, a delicious risotto and a unique and tasty fried artichoke. This isn't a budget spot, for sure. I had the Tampa bowl during one of the visits and I was still hungry. I asked for bread and juice to fill myself up. This was on a Friday. For Sunday another person in our party ordered the same dish and her portion size was larger and she was full afterwards. We also went for dinner on a Saturday night and the table set up for us was beautiful. The current is a new autograph Marriott collection hotel that has some of the best views at Rocky point. It is nestled next door to rusty pelican and offers great food & a rooftop bar. The pool area is beautiful with a private shore/beach area. As for Julian - it's a fairly small area of their lobby and open kitchen. I would classify it as a mix of Italian and Asian dishes with a dash of local ingredients! I am very happy that I visited here before it becomes the next big place in Tampa. Service was great and the food was executed perfectly. We started with the tempura fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with aged goat cheese over honey comb, citrus salad that cut through the creaminess of the cheese! The tempura was light and airy! Also we got the small version of the summer rock shrimp with summer corn, zucchini and charred gnocchi. Would recommend getting that as a whole entree which is a little more expensive and an option. For entrees I got the snapper over quinoa and bf got the salmon over coconut rice. Both were very good. To end the meal we got the lemon panna cotta with mint crumble, ginger crisp and cookies. Very light and refreshing. Overall, make sure you visit the bar and enjoy the sunset before dinner at Julian! This place is the perfect addition to the Tampa food scene. read more

This is a valet only establishment. Valet is free if you're dining at this hotel. The interior designers, decorators, and architects did a great job with this whole place throughout. It shows through the marble/Smooth stone style walls, quartz countertops, etc. The cocktails here are made to quality by a skilled and informative bartender. The food is good. The service was OK considering that most of the country is understaffed in the food industry. We still got our food and drinks at a decent time. She had to repeat herself many times and couldn't take our order accurately. "I don't even want to eat here anymore." I said before my food even came. The executive chef felt it was acceptable to stand over the food at the station under the heating lamps while waiting on the other orders to arrive. He coughed! OK he turned his head but it still makes me feel uncomfortable that he has a cough and he is standing over food that he is bringing to tables. I find it disrespectful and unsanitary! Why did I eat alone and why did my husband eat alone? Because our food was not brought out at the same time. The Brussel sprouts tasted good but were cold, yuck. My husband's fish was hot but overcooked/double cooked and dry. The whole experience was beyond disappointing and I don't recommend it. I don't want to downplay the quality of the food, which is absolutely excellent, nor the ambience which is clean, modern, and elegant...but the service at Julian's is absolutely unmatched. At every point in my dining experience, I felt cared for on a level beyond what one expects from "great service". I feel like good food is rather ubiquitous nowadays as long as one is willing to pay for it. The food at Julian Restaurant is absolutely fantastic. I mean, TRULY fantastic. I greatly enjoyed the Yellowtail Snapper this evening. Presentation was stunning and the meal was perfectly balanced and portioned -an excellent recommendation from my incredible bartender/server Jamie. The lovely Chef James Roberts himself, took the time to check in with me, even though I became a bit of a nuisance, asking for my fish to be filleted. Prior to dinner Raphael, at the bar, helped me discover my new favorite gin as I was without my glasses and couldn't quite read all the labels behind the bar. This restaurant is inside the Marriott owned Current hotel, but that DOES NOT mean that this place is sub-standard. It's a a great place with a great view and most items on its compact yet revolving menu is thoughtfully prepared and assembled. I also had a Margarita which came from the adjacent bar - this drink could have used a bit more flavor profile. The staff are VERY attentive in a positive way. Our server took her time to answer our questions and made some recommendations. My dining experience here for an early dinner on a Wednesday was worth the time, money and I left with a smile. Some suggestions for the restaurant to consider : maybe include a chicken dish in every of your rotation? Maybe one red meat, one seafood, and one chicken dish? Love this restaurant inside the Current Hotel (Autograph collection). You can either sit inside the actual restaurant, or order this food from the hotel bar. I was pleasantly surprised with the menu selection- the first night I ordered the hanger steak and frites with the shanso miso butter and togarashi fries. I asked them to leave a little seasoning off of the fries because it was too spicy for me (they were able to accommodate my request). The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and having extra sauce on the side for the fries completed the dish. So I'm in Tampa, (first time on business). Staying at an okay enough hotel (but that's a different review). First night after a good workout, I wanted a nice dinner. Found Julian, which is located inside a very posh/swanky Current Hotel. The hotel is very cool, reminds me of what you'd find in Miami, but lower key. Sitting at a table for two by the wIndows overlooking the water as well as the mood lighting and soft volume upbeat house music makes for a great ambiance. Really terrific sccene overall. Now for the service: I'm sure the service staff is all great, but Lori took excellent care of me and I highly recommend asking for her. She didn't press anything but was very good in describing the options. The meal: I already had my sites set on either the Wagu burger or the half chicken entree and decided on the chicken and Lori advised that it will take 25 mins. I wasn't in a rush so I ordered. I started with the endive salad that was delicious. 25 mins flew because the ambiance was so good and I capped the wait with a call to my envious family. The chicken entree was worth the wait. Prepared to perfection. The corn polenta melts. Although I finished the polenta, I decided to save half the chicken for lunch tomorrow. Before leaving, I complimented chef Roberto and his team on a well orchestrated meal. The delicious raspberry chocolate cake and cappuccino rounded off what turned out to be a great choice for a dinner experience. The bill was delivered in a perfectly presented mini cigar box which was a nice touch. Fantastic date night for Valentine's Day and one of the best eating experiences we have had since moving to Florida. From beginning to end there was not a single part of the meal that was not excellent. Additionally the service was top notch, and though the dining area is perhaps a bit small, it has a nice ambience. My wife and I essentially shared everything, starting with the smoked duck wings, having the cavatelli and chilean sea bass for the entrees, and ending with the poached pear. Everything we had was artfully presented, bursting with flavor, and perfectly balanced (which has become increasingly rare in modern fusion restaurants which often substitute originality for enjoyment). Even the drinks were great. Though a bit on the pricier side, given the quality of the food and the overall experience, it was definitely worth it. Perfect for a date night or possibly brunch given the scenic locale on the water (as well as outdoor seating). We look forward to coming back when the weather is better. read more

We had a 1:30 reservation on one of the busiest restaurant days of the year, I get that things may have been a little hectic. We waited a few minutes for anyone to greet us at the hostess stand, but then when she finally came up, the moment I told the hostess we had a reservation, she scoffed and had a bad attitude. She then stopped helping us and starting helping the party that was behind us in line, and sat them immediately, even though we had the same reservation time. Apparently, since they had a party of four people, they took priority over my party of two. The hostess then told us we could sit on the opposite side of the hotel in a little lounge area next to the bar that didn't have any proper restaurant seating because she "couldn't control when people are done eating." The whole point of making a reservation in advance is to have a proper table for lunch, so we were not happy with that. I told her, "never mind, we'll go somewhere else," and we left. If she had just asked us if we minded waiting a few minutes until a table was ready, we would have been perfectly happy. It was the poor attitude and lack of organization that made us leave. This little hidden gem is located off Rocky Point Dr just before you turn left into the Rusty Pelican on the left hand side inside of the Currant Hotel. You drive up the ramp to valet. The restaurant will validate your ticket as long as your meal is over $25 which is very easy to attain. The restaurant itself is small or quaint depending on how you see it and the bar area is outside of the actual restaurant. Which gives a different feel which I guess is set up this way because of the hotel. There is also a nice roof top bar that's has inside seating and plenty of seating outside and heat lamps available for our chilly Florida days/nights. The menu is simple with unique choices. We opted for a several items to share rather than an actual meal. I had a glass of Woodford Reserve, neat. Anyone who knows me knows Whiskey, Bourbon Whiskey, Scotch Whiskey are my typical go to, although this pallet can drink anything (lush) lol. As for the food, we had Oysters, Duck wings, Gnocci w/ rock shrimp, Prawns, and the seared Tuna (I might not have properly named each dish but you get my point). The dishes came out pretty much at the same time. The Oysters were sweet, juicy and oh so tasty. The Prawns were tasty as well but could have used a bit more flavor in the sauce but the crostini was delish. My date enjoyed the duck wings and gnocchi and tuna as he practically devoured them, good thing I got to taste each a bit before it was gone. Needless to say they each dish was tasty. We also got dessert, I want to say it was the cake with 3 types of ice cream. I personally don't eat sweets but I opted to have a taste just because. Didn't really care for it but that's just me. My date practically licked the plate so there ya go. Out server was nice, attentive but not overly attentive although she did forget to bring me napkins and realized it after we finished our meal. I think this place is cute yet hidden and I would come back to the rooftop bar. We visited during opening week back in September. This hotel is absolutely gorgeous as most Autograph Boutique hotels are. You have to park valet because they built this hotel in an incredibly small piece of land right beside Rusty Pelican. This hotel is located in the Rocky Pointe area of Tampa and has really nice views of the bay facing the Tampa airport and bridges. We came here specifically to go the the restaurant Julian. Its not a "restaurant" in the sense like a stand alone space or designated space. Its an open area located were the bar and lobby is and it seats about 77 people. They have a nice view of the pool and of the shore with rocks and the bay in the restaurant space. They have an open kitchen as well. Our waitress was very nice, very attentive, and super friendly. There are no gluten free denotations on their menu and the food is Asian inspired so a lot of the items I already knew I couldn't have. She and the the Chef had no issues accommodating my having Celiacs. They helped me find a lot of items that were gluten free or could be modified. The local fish with sumac and quinoa was very very good and it was so pretty with the edible flowers on it. Every single thing we ordered was delicious and we would definitely return. Although we were in a very open lobby like area it wasn't loud which is important. After dinner we went up to the rooftop bar and lounge on the 14th floor. It's pretty nice up there and peaceful. A friend and I ate breakfast here, and were were floored to discover this hotel restaurant has such good food. It was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. I had a spanish-themed breakfast dish and asked for salsa. The chef insisted on making fresh salsa just for me, and it was FABULOUS. The server was just as good.
