15 min on line, no problem there. New place with lots of interest. Their operations could have been faster but I'm sure they will improve in that area. Toppings (Brown butter hazelnut crunch) were excellent. The donut itself was not. It was definitely fresh but tasted like sponge cake. Don't get me wrong, it did not taste bad, but it was not our idea of a good donut. After eating it neither one of us wanted a second. That should be telling enough. The staff was working hard in the background and those we encountered were very pleasant and friendly. We counted about 7 or 8 workers in the back. Overall we were not blown away and won't rush back. We were disappointed by the donut itself and by the ridiculous price of up to $4 per donut. ---------------------- We went in to give them another shot because we wanted to be fair. My family has tried it previously and highly recommends it. I'm not generally a donut person, but eventually went there on a weekend with my kids to give it a try. First impression, it's not bad at all. Granted that it's far more pricey than Dunkin Donut down the street, and if you are price-sensitive, you would not want it since it's three times the price of DD. That said, the kind of donuts at Union Sq are not the same, so it's not a fair apple-to-apple comparison. Yes, it's more expensive, but the dough feels real (not those melt-in-your-mouth type of dough), it's bigger, and the toppings are nice. I tried the Belgian chocolate topping, and I like it, because it's not overwhelmingly sweet. It almost has this old-fashion feel to it, compared to the cookie-cutter types from DD. It's fairly convenient situated between the C line (Coolidge Corner) and B line (Harvard St), almost mid-point in walking distance. I'll visit again for some other donuts. PS: I still miss the old Wulf's Fish Market that used to be in the same location. Pretty much Coolidge Corner will have nothing left, except pizza places, donut shops, Starbucks and coffee shops, and banks. The diversity of shops is disappearing. Sad. read more

I went in at about noon on a Sunday to get an old fashioned cake donut. However, when I arrived, they were out of this type of donut as well as several other types of donuts. Since I was already there and hungry, I decided to try the Belgian dark chocolate donut. The chocolate topping, although very sweet, was prepared in house, which I appreciated. However, the doughy part of the donut was not good at all. This may be because I am not a big fan of donuts that are not old fashioned. I forced myself to eat the donut and regretted it afterward, the donut was definitely not worth the money ($3) or calories. Disappointed. I may give this place another shot, and go back to try an old fashioned donut...Maybe after this experience recedes further into the past. read more

This is a review solely based on the availability of flavors. I have gone to Union Square Donuts on two separate occasions around 11am only to find that they have sold out of most flavors leaving the least popular options for sale. Brookline has a large brunch crowd that wakes up a little later and would frequent the store during the late morning. I don't understand why there isn't enough supply for the demand at this point. Even if they kept a stock of the generic flavors (vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon sugar), that would be a better solution. If you close later in the day, why aren't all flavors available for most of the day? I do want to say that when I do get the flavors that I prefer, the donuts are always delicious and well worth the trip. Just wish I had a good experience each visit. TL;DR: Get there in the early morning if you want to have your pick of flavors! read more

Tried this place out on opening weekend and again a few weeks after. The line the first time spilled out the door and onto the sidewalk. Donuts are great- pretty good size and the toppings/frostings/glazes are very rich. I have tried: toasted coconut (tasty but rich, glaze is very sweet and shredded coconut added on top), cinnamon sugar (classic, very good, fluffy/airy), and sea salted bourbon caramel (EXTREMELY sticky, tasted the bourbon flavor and the hint of salt on top of the airy donut). These donuts are well-crafted and while they are very expensive, I will make an exception since I rarely treat myself to a donut and when I do, I want it to be exceptional. Also, the people that work here are very nice. Minus one star for the coffee. It is so weak!!!!!! I even tried a latte with two shots thinking this would be decently strong and the drink tasted like plain milk. I wish they had a selection of dark roast coffee rather than the acidic/citrus/weak tasting coffees on the current menu. Skip the coffee altogether and just get a donut. read more

This is a wonderful little donut shop Tucked in a quiet shopping area. While the doughnuts are a little bit too chewy ( more pizza dough than melt-in-your-mouth) , the glazings are excellent. I've tried both locations because I've heard so many good things about their donuts. Plus, my work always gets them for the office but I never had a chance to try one (they're always gone before I get to them - which I thought was a good sign). I was disappointed both times. First time, I got the classic chocolate covered. The texture of the donut just wasn't right, the dough not sweet enough, and the chocolate was too much (and I really like dark chocolate). I think it would be better as a thinner glaze + softer & sweeter dough. The second time I went with more people so I was able to try a few different kinds. The Vietnamese coffee donut was the best out of everything we got. The texture of the donut was much better and the amount of topping (glaze) was a good balance. But I also tried the birthday cake donut. The dough was super greasy and dry. I tried this one because I thought the sprinkles would make the chocolate topping more bearable & sweet, but it didn't. Lastly, I also tried the cinnamon sugar donut holes - so dry! To conclude, there was one good donut, the Vietnamese coffee donut, but the inconsistency between the different donuts is just confusing. read more

Union Square donuts will always be my favorite donut shop in the Massachusetts. I was so thrilled to see that they opened up a shop more convenient for me in terms of public transportation. I was actually surprised to see how spacious this shop is compared to the Union Square location! I don't want to review about donuts because I pretty much did in my original review @ Bow St. location and their donuts are obviously the same. The only difference I saw was that some of their donuts did not raise as high as the ones on Bow St. Not sure if that was just a one-time thing or if they're usually like that. Anyways, I think I would prefer this location over the original one just because they have a lot more room to hang out/study/etc. They also have an amazing painting on the wall that makes it so instagram-worthy! I get really claustrophobic, so this location is definitely the place for me. Highly recommend! Went in for an iced coffee and to try a donut. The coffee, sizes are only small and large. The "large" would be a small in most places but whatevs. Wanted a "large" cold brew with skim milk, no skim just whole milk, half & half or almond milk. Ok fine, no milk then. How about Splenda or stevia or god forbid sweet & low? Nope just sugar in the raw. Ok you guys obviously worship at the alter of pseudoscience. I just want a coffee with a little something sweet in it that isn't 300 calories. But I'll settle for black. Not a deal breaker. I put a lid on my iced coffee and take a sip. Coffee dribbles out. Dried the lid off, still coffee dripping every time you tip it to sip the straw. I change lids, same problem. I tell the guy behind the counter, he puts a second cup on it. Still drips coffee. No way I'm walking out with coffee dropping down my shirt every time I sip. Blank stare from barista. Told them to just keep it. Walked our several dollars lighter with no coffee. Highly recommend the Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch and the Vanilla Bean for most people. The doughnuts were very greasy/heavy. There was oil on them, kind of like fried dough with frosting/toppings instead of powdered sugar. They don't offer cake donuts. I wish they had more varieties involving chocolate like chocolate chip, sprinkles, something like that -- the dark chocolate frosted is a bit too dark for me. Brown butter hazelnut is definitely the best one. A nice Sunday morning treat, but not a place i'll visit regularly. I prefer Twin Doughnuts. read more

My husband and I tried four doughnuts. 3 yeast, 1 cake. The yeast doughnuts are superior to Blackbird's (never go for yeast at Blackbird, go for their cake doughnuts), the cake doughnut isn't as great as Blackbird's. We tried the lemon, bourbon salted caramel, vietnamese coffee, and cinnamon sugar cake. The lemon tasted artificially lemon, the bourbon salted caramel tasted heavily of alcohol but my husband enjoyed it, the vietnamese coffee does not taste like coffee but like toffee/condensed milk which is absolutely delicious, and the cinnamon sugar cake doughnut is just your regular cake doughnut. Favorite so far is the vietnamese coffee even though it doesn't taste like coffee. Will be back to try more! read more

Most other places attract people with overbearing sweet toppings and an average donut.
