Huge freshly baked doughnuts. Service can be slow, but it is worth the wait. Many of the special doughnuts are a bit overly sweet to me (my wife & kids LOVE them). The traditional old fashioned doughnut is outstanding. They are all too large, but you can split it or eat it all yourself and say "that doughnut was too big". ;-) Limited indoor seating. Welcome to the neighborhood, Union Square Donuts! I think I speak for all of Brookline when I say we're happy you're here. Please do not believe the naysayers. These donuts are old-fashioned, so they have heft. The cake donuts are dense, but moist. The yeast donuts are light and airy. Nothing like Dunkin' in flavor or form. The menu is diverse -- you can get something inventive like blackberry basil lime or something classic like raspberry jam. I usually get two for the variety, saying I split them in half and save them for later (and then I eat both of them right then and there). They also have vegan options! They also have great coffee, which is necessary. The two go hand-in-hand! The prices can set you back a bit and there's not much space to sit, but that doesn't negate the fact that this place has seriously stellar donuts. Totally worth it to treat yo'self! read more

Updating my review because USD has answered my call to branch out with flavors. Today we tried the lemon cardamom poppyseed which was fantastic. Light, fluffy, packed with flavor, and especially fresh for 3pm. Also on the docket was the blackberry basil lime - exactly the exotic flavor I was expecting, and I may have learned a little about myself along the way. Last up was the brown butter hazelnut crunch, which was by far my favorite. I hear the hazelnut graces the menu quite frequently, rightfully so. Well done, USD. I'd give these 3.5 if I could. I love sweets and I love donuts, and these are pretty yummy, but with a few star-knocking flaws. i find them to be very greasy and lacking in sweetness. There's also not a lot of variety and the original flavors seem to be put together for trend-factor more so than actual deliciousness. I do love the Boston Cream Pie donut, which has a vanilla cream center and thick layer of what appears to be bittersweet fudge covering the top (it will glue your mouth shut. Take small bites. Learned this the hard way.) The flavors work really well together and it's delicious. One of my main qualms is that the staff can never seem to get it together. They're running around like headless chickens and there's no order (example, no designated person on register), so it leads to long lines and delays. They also run out of donuts pretty early and you're left with some of the more unusual flavors, such as orange ginger cream. Not a lot of places to sit, and lines out the door. If someone gave me one of these donuts i'd be happy, but I wouldn't hurry back to stand in line for them. Excellent location, there are few bakeries near Coolidge Corner/Harvard St. so it will satisfy your sweet tooth in a pinch. read more

The staff is so nice in this place too. So friendly and social. I finally went in and tried these for the first time on my own. Still soo good. I don't think there isn't any bad donut in this place. Good donuts, but not the best. They are very creative with their flavors, but it doesn't always work! The maple bacon donut is wayyy too artificial tasting, and the bacon on top tastes odd, kind of burnt (and I've had this donut a few times before, so it's not just the issue of a bad batch). I do commend them on their vegan options - they don't taste any different from the real deal. Here are my top 3 donuts - -Sugar Raised (the best donut they have!) -Vietnamese Coffee (trust me, the coffee flavor is so subtle yet so well done) -Sea Salted Bourbon Caramel (YUM) They have some great options, but their unique ideas don't always follow through. Such delicious donuts! If you're looking for your donut fix, you will not be disappointed if you end up at Union Square. It's a cute shop with a small selection of donuts (I think around 10 or so depending on what's in stock). You may get to the front of the line and they could be out of the donut you were craving. I feel like this might be the case only on weekends and towards the end of store hours. If you like Lemon, you MUST try their lemon poppyseed donut. It's a cake based donut that has such a great lemon flavor, but not too aggressive. I could have easier eaten many. I've also gotten their vanilla bean, salted caramel, Boston cream, and chocolate frosted. Their vanilla bean was probably my next favorite. Think vanilla frosted Dunkin Donuts donut, but 10 times more delicious. The salted caramel was a little sticky for my preference. I was fairly impressed by the donuts here! My friends and I came close to closing so there weren't many options left, but I ended up ordering one of the sea-salted bourbon caramel donuts, probably what I would have ordered even if they had all of their options available. It was great! When we were leaving, it was even closer to closing so the workers were kind enough to give my friends and I a huge bag of donut holes! They were also great. We all liked the glazed ones better than the cinnamon sugar. My only complaints are that 1) they don't have all of the options available all day (I would have loved to try one of their more well-known donuts like the blackberry one) and 2) the donuts are a little pricey. I don't know, this might just be me but I don't love the donuts here. I really really really want to, but I've tried it so many times and it's just alright. It's possible that I just prefer the cakey donuts and union square donuts is primarily yeast donuts. I've tried most of their flavors and I can't speak highly of the Belgian chocolate, sea salt, maple bacon, or the hazelnut one. It all tastes like the same donut but with different toppings and the toppings didn't taste amazing to me. The vanilla and viet coffee one kind of taste the same to me too. Finally opened a location close by! We decided to have donuts as desert so we didn't go there early enough to catch the flavors of the day. They were already sold out in the early afternoon. It's great that there's no minimum to use credit card for the small business. The cashier swiped my card for two donuts and flipped the monitor for me to sign with my finger. Default was no tip so payment was quick and easy. If you choose to tip, you can easily change it on the touch screen. I've been meaning to try this place, but the Somerville location, for the longest time but it never appealed to me to go so far just for donuts. I'm so glad that they finally opened up this location a lot more convenient for me! The four donuts we got to share: - Maple bacon ($4): the bacon itself was really hard but I think the donut itself was one of my favorites out of the four - Vietnamese coffee ($3): tasted nothing like what Viet coffee should taste like, imo, but more like cinnamon - Lemon poppy seed cake ($3): tasted more like a muffin, which is not a bad thing at all - Boston creme ($3): the dark chocolate frosting (I think?) made this donut a lot less sweet than most Boston creme's I've tried. Honestly, I'm not sure if normal Boston creme donuts are made with dark or milk chocolate on top but I just know this tasted a lot less sweet... It's not necessarily a bad thing but it didn't stand out to me either Overall, this place is very average. The only other fancy donut place I can compare it to is Blackbird's which I thought was okay too. This place is a bit cheaper at least BUT the donuts itself were less fluffy. I can only imagine a friend of mine asking me: "Mark, why on God's green Earth would you pay $3.50 for a doughnut when you can get one at Dunkin Donuts for a buck?" Well, This is one of those cases where you get what you pay for is actually connected to something good! I paid $3.50 vs. $1 because this doughnut is 3.5 times better. Still, mentally plopping down $3.50 can be unusual, to say the least. I had the maple bacon, because how can you go wrong with bacon, no matter where it is? If there is an answer, I haven't found it yet! Bacon and doughnuts do go together! While I liked that the pieces were relatively substantial (both in size and thickness), this comes with some drawbacks. First, because of bacon's nature, when you bite, you take the whole piece with you. There are only about four pieces to begin with, so not every bite will have bacony goodness. The other issue is, if you are eating the doughnut on the go, there is a risk of the bacon falling off, as happened to me. The frosting was pleasant, it was quite sweet, but I could still taste the maple! I feel like I should say I would like for the maple to shine through a little bit more, but frostings are by nature based on sugar. What I really loved though was the dough itself. The flavor was great, it was ever so gently sweet, and not overly fatty as some other places' dough tends to be. Also, it was the perfect blend of airiness and heft. This way, the doughnut didn't break immediately when held, nor was it capable of serving as an emergency pillow. The dough was also fresh and cooked perfectly. A gentle squeeze is an excellent tell, doughnut popped right back into shape, as opposed to acting like play-dough. Then, there's the coffee (small iced). Coffee was also quite pricey but was pretty good too. While I typically like my coffee on the bitter side as opposed to sour, this tasted like it had found a perfect midpoint. In addition to giving it a more complex flavor, it did something else... it added a finish which I struggle to put words to. When trying to find some way to describe it, the first words that came to mind was kalamata olives. There are, of course, no olives in the coffee, just something the almost indescribable (after)taste brought to mind. read more

I love union square donuts. You can usually find parking really close. The service is super fast and every one is friendly. Their bathroom is always clean. Now about the doughnuts. Their vegan donuts are the best. They should make them in more flavors. I don't love their yeast donuts. They should be fluffier but they are pretty dense. I was craving a donut and remembered this place was near by!!! They're still opened during COVID!! Plenty of metered street parking, I parking literally in front of the place! You view your donut selections from the window and someone will come out to order for you :) Super simple and you don't even have to go inside/touch anything. Its really quick and easy! The dulce de leches was definitely my favorite pick from the many donuts I bought that day! The only thing holding me back from a 5 star is that the donut holes I got were a bit on the harder side. Stopped into Union Square Donuts on Sunday morning. I went with a Raspberry Jam Donut and a Latte and also got a bite of the signature Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch Donut. Quality Donuts have become a hot trend everywhere, so each different pastry shop has had to find a way to up its game. I was happy with what I tried at Union Square Donuts, but was not running to get back in line. I ordered the Raspberry Jam Donut. A soft and fresh donut, coated in sugar and stuffed with raspberry jam. This is not one of those donuts you take a bite and just get air, they absolutely fill it up. The breading of the donut itself is heavy so it is tough to eat the whole thing. I also tried the Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch Donut. With a brown butter glaze and salted crushed hazelnuts on top it is tasty, but too sweet. Another very heavy donut that gets you ready for nap time. My Latte however was absolutely perfect. While the donuts may get the attention, I would strongly advise making sure you grab something to drink, because they take the time and attention to get it right. Quantity The donuts are hefty and very sweet, so I highly recommend sharing. I think a few bites is all you really need. Value Donuts range from $3 to $4 depending on your selection. And while $4 is pricey, they are pretty substantial in size. Ambiance Union Square Donuts is located in Brookline, a few blocks north of Coolidge Corner. The small shop is nestled in a strip of stores, but can be identified by a blackboard drawing of a donut outside. Inside they have a small area for ordering to the left and then a few tables and chairs near the front window. The shop smells amazing from the moment you walk in, the great combination of fresh coffee and sweet treats. The shop is very hip and modern, as well as being extremely clean. In the background pop music played quietly. Crowd Most guests grabbed their donuts and coffee for the road, however the shop does have a small space for guests to sit down. Strangely the only other people who were sitting down were drinking coffee and eating pastries from Starbucks. I was surprised how empty the place was on a weekend morning, but maybe we missed the rush. Service The staff is fast and friendly. They seemed to have a lot of people working, absolutely outnumbering the customers. But they worked quick to get everyone their snacks and drinks. Parking There is metered parking directly outside and free street parking up many of the nearby side streets. Extra Union Square Donuts has some creative selections, but at least the ones I chose I felt were too sweet and too heavy. Coupled with the high cost, it isn't a spot I would feel the need to return. $24 for four donuts, a latte, and chocolate milk. But really though?? The girlfriend and I went here at around 9:00 on a Saturday morning and there wasn't too much of a line. For such a small place (four tables in the whole place), that was pretty nice. We ordered the chocolate strawberry donut, maple bacon donut, two boston creme donuts, the seasonal latte (it happened to be maple), and a chocolate milk. The donuts.... they were good! My maple bacon had just the right amount of maple so that it wasn't too sweet and five thick-cut bits of quality bacon. My only complaint was that I wish it was just a bit lighter and fluffier. My girlfriend and I both agreed that her chocolate strawberry donut was way too sweet. They definitely tasted fresh and homemade, but they still left something to be desired (especially when only four of them will run you ~$15) and they were way too dense. Man, were they dense. I'm usually able to eat quite a bit, but I could only put one down. It's also a good idea to have a drink nearby because these things practically stick to your throat. We saved our boston creme donuts for later that day. The chocolate that they use on top is definitely darker than a normal boston creme and was actually very nice with the vanilla custard. I also appreciated that they used fresh vanilla beans for the custard. These were our favorites. So overall, the donuts were pretty good, but they could have been better. My biggest complaint (other than the cost) is with their coffee. If you're charging $5 for a seasonal maple latte, then it better be an amazing latte. I received a pretty standard latte (at most, it was 12 ounces) and I would have believed it was just a regular latte if you didn't tell me it was maple. Overall, eh. Not blown away. This my second review, a year since my first review for this location of Union Square Donuts. I wanted to give their donuts a second chance because last time I purchased a donut at about 11am and I thought maybe the donut got stale. This time I purchased at 7:15 am. The donut was a Boston Cream. The filling was abundant and nice. Smooth and not too sweet. The chocolate was a dark chocolate and very good. The donut itself was quite heavy. Not impressed! First, I was in Boston so I went for my favorite Boston Cream. The chocolate was real chocolate. The cream was just ok. The dough was very "dry"and oily. Not sure if it was supposed to be like that, but it did not make my taste buds dance thus not worth my $4.50. I rather eat a Dunkin' Donuts than this. So I got a maple bacon and a rasberry lemon. both of them are just delicious. Its also HUGE. Its like as big as my hand. It's super fluffy just melts in your mouth good. I was sitting outside with my dog eating my donut and I took 2 bite and as clumsy as me the donut fell onto the ground... The best donuts I've had in Boston!! I stopped in on a Sunday evening right before closing and was expecting them to be sold out of most flavors, but was happily surprised when we were told that they still had every flavor except the vegan ones. There were only 3 vegan flavors, so if you're vegan I would go to a place with more variety. I got the Raspberry Basil Lime, the Maple Bacon, and the Brown Butter Hazelnut. My favorite was definitely the brown butter hazelnut! It was very decadent and had a hint of saltiness. The other two flavors were also very good. Somehow they managed to get a balance between all three flavors on the raspberry basil lime, and it was a lighter, refreshing donut compared to the other two. The maple bacon had 5 large pieces of bacon which I was very satisfied with. All three were yeast donuts, so they were light and airy. I much prefer this to cake donuts, which are too dense for me. Also, the donuts themselves were not too sweet, allowing for the toppings to shine through. I was also very pleased with my experience at the shop. The guy working there was very friendly and helpful, explaining what the flavors were and what was most popular. Additionally, the donuts were very fresh which was unexpected considering it was right before closing.
