The staff wasn't helpful at all. "They're all good." She also said the bread is Korean style bread that is popular in Korea. Then I asked why use the Japanese word for salt, i.e. "shio". She then responded that the bread is Japanese style. Like, which is it? Korean or Japanese? After consulting Gemini AI, the two styles are fundamentally the same but the texture is different. Regardless of Japanese or Korean style, I got the original and black (squid ink). I honestly don't see what the hype is. It's essentially just butter roll with salt sprinkled on top. Lol.

Dough is very soft and fillings are great, especially Soboro chestnut cube's small chestnut pieces and crunchy soboro topping makes it addictive. Shio pan is very buttery , one of the best in town. I also liked Mochi mochi bread which had very chewy texture like mochi, but this time, I felt the one I had in the past tasted better. However, Rich bread was very good. The dough is similar to brioche with very rich, buttery flavor. This one is definitely better than before. Overall, I really liked their products. I was devastated and embarked upon a quest to find another bakery that sold Chinese Egg Tarts even half as good as the ones Marui bakery used to sell. Someone from a Facebook food group that I follow mentioned something about the egg tarts at Jin Mai Bakery. Jin Mai Bakery has been on my radar ever since. I finally managed to pay them a visit and wow, their egg tarts are really really good! They are now our family's new "go to" place for Chinese Egg Tarts. When we walked into the bakery, we were immediately struck by the wonderful aroma of baked goods in the air. This was a promising sign already, and then when I saw the egg tarts, the crust already looked flaky just upon first glance. We happened to arrive just as they had taken a fresh batch out of the oven, so we bought a pack of 6 egg tarts and tried a couple of them right away. Piping hot, soft and custardy centre without being overly sweet. And the crust...a nice, flaky crust...the piece de resistance. The flaky crust was what made Marui's egg tarts so phenomenal and these egg tarts at Jin Mai Bakery are the closest we've found. I have searched quite awhile for egg tarts that were even half as good as the ones from Marui, and these were better than half as good. These are easily the best Chinese Egg Tarts in town now. No question about it. This is "the" place to go for Chinese Egg Tarts.

Firstly, in today's economy, the prices have gone up; however, what I got wasn't really on par with the price tags. The melon pan had no filling in it which is the norm, however, i couldn't even taste hojicha. The "melon" part of the bread all fell off after one bite. I've not had a melon pan that was like this before. The beef curry pan was delicious but there was barely any filling in it. I remember there was more many years ago. It used to be one of my favorite items from Kanadell so it was definitely a disappointment. Lastly, the animal character with red bean filling inside, there was also barely any filling in it. The earl Grey shortbread cookies tasty but I found it a tad bit expensive because it was a small packaging .

I wish they would have less of a poker face on. The bakery has a good selection of Asian bakery items. I took some time looking at all options before deciding on 2 egg tarts and a puff. The egg tarts were yummy and not too sweet. Baked to perfection - the pie pastry was crispy and the inside was soft and creamy. I didn't like the puff as much. It didn't have much of the hojicha taste and was a tad bit sweet. What threw me off was the cream inside kept oozing out of the puff. I ended up with no cream inside the puff as it was all on the counter top. I've never had such an experience in all my cream puff eating times. Not sure if it was because their puff shell wasn't sturdy enough? Nonetheless, i'll be back for other bakery items!

Ambiance at this location is typical of the Chinese bakeries in town. Grab a tray for convenience if you are buying more than 5 items and be patient if there's a line up. There isn't a specific pastry item or baked item that I usually buy from St Germaine besides the lobster roll because the overall taste of their buns are on the sweeter side and I mostly buy savory flavored buns or items like the sesame pastry. Their mango cakes seem to get a lot of compliments and the pineapple buns are quite popular. St Germaine is good at making Cantonese pastries with different variations. Also, the coloured plastic was unnecessary for the kind of cake that I ordered (usually it is used to stabilize the mousse cake but mine is a cream cake). The coloured plastic made the cake look ugly, and it gave them an excuse to put less cream and decoration for the cake. Everything was tasteless - the cream (powder taste), the durian meat (weak taste mixed with cream), the sponge cake (minimal egg taste), and the fruits on top of the cake (they did not have the clear sugar glaze for the fruits; they tasted bitter and the kiwi still had bits of skin on - it was gross). The cake was nasty because the flavour of the ingredients was minimal and it was not sweet. It deterred you from finishing it. In addition, there was a small piece of debris (brown shell) in the cake; it was scary. They did a poor job for the cake (it was just big and heavy - quantity over quality); it was very disappointing. In terms of the service, the staff asked me to pay some deposit when I ordered the cake at the store. It was unusual for bakeries to ask customers for deposit because usually customers pay when they pick up the cake (e.g. when you order the cake by phone then you pay when you pick it up). When I went there to pick up the cake, the staff did not greet me, look at me, or talk to me at all; she just took my receipt and retrieved the cake. She did not even say 'thank you' and she looked annoyed. The staff should be happy to get the whole cakes for customers because the whole cakes are the most expensive item in the store and they are celebratory. The fact that she just taped one small candle with the plastic knife on the box without asking was unprofessional. Cakes are about happy occasions. But their cake made me feel terrible after eating it. They charged me $80 for the cake. It was not even worth half the price with the service. P.S. The bakeries always have a catalogue of cakes for customers because the store would not have all kinds of cakes available in the fridge. Then the staff would explain to customers of their design capabilities. That is service. The fact that the bakeries do not provide a catalogue to customers and just give customers a price list instead means they want to limit the choices for customers by just showing the customers the cakes in the fridge. That means they do not want customers to be happy. If the staff do not want to sell to customers, that means they do not want business.
