Among the hordes of bakeries in this immediate area, there's this one, as it's like a refreshing change up from all the generic ones. Japanese bakeries just hit different and I didn't come across anything that I hated. The curry pan is absolutely the star with the crunchy outer texture and savory curry filling. The yuzu green onion cheese bun and pizza bun were delicious and I could've been equally happy with those alone. Meanwhile the kawaii animal breads are begging to be bought with how attractive they look - obviously toddler friendly. Highly recommend a stop here. read more

I haven't been to Kanadell in many years as it's quite far from me. I used to love it quite a lot. When I tried their breads recently, i was somewhat disappointed. Firstly, in today's economy, the prices have gone up; however, what I got wasn't really on par with the price tags. The melon pan had no filling in it which is the norm, however, i couldn't even taste hojicha. The "melon" part of the bread all fell off after one bite. I've not had a melon pan that was like this before. The beef curry pan was delicious but there was barely any filling in it. I remember there was more many years ago. It used to be one of my favorite items from Kanadell so it was definitely a disappointment. Lastly, the animal character with red bean filling inside, there was also barely any filling in it. A neighbourhood favourite with all the popular Japanese goods and freshly made Japanese food. The curry is a good generous help of rice and ground beef curry. Top it off with pork katsu for $3.50. We stopped into Kandell as we were aiming to try their egg salad sandwiches to see if they could fulfill our craving of the ones we had in Tokyo! They don't fully stack up but are darn close! The bread to egg ratio is fab, the milk bread has a nice light sweetness to it, the filling is creamy and made with good kewpie mayo. The deduction for me was the crust, I love how in Tokyo the sandos are crustless! The freshness was there which was also nice as they package it properly. The real showstopper was the Yuzu Lemondade - so fresh ring and delish!! Would love to get it again in the summer. I also had a black sesame mochie but which was yummy too, great texture and nutty flavour. The store itself I prob would only take to go as it's quite cold and the seating is strange, it's like outdoor furniture inside. Not a ton of space either if there are a few people sitting already. Quaint Japanese bakery on Hastings across from Kootenay Loop. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as Hastings outside of the afternoon rush hour. The inside is a bit dated but quaint. Old school wooden trim. There is seating along the windows, as well as a couple of larger tables for groups of 4. There are also resort style(?) chairs, though the cushions looked a bit too stained for my liking. Cough. Staff are friendly. No complaints. Coffee here is decent. No complaints. I also tried one of their melon pan. Decent but a bit dry. Guessing it sat for a while in the display. They also sell dried coffee and tea. Interestingly enough, this place also sells burgers and fries. Definitely unexpected. Photos looked good. Will have to try one day. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point. read more

I will preface this review by stating that all buns I purchased were air fried before consumption, therefore I don't know what the quality is like when eaten directly from the displays. When we visited near the end of the day right before closing, many items had sold out and the remaining selection wasn't the best. We ended up trying out four of the pastries: Melon Pan ($4.50) - Smells amazing coming straight out of the air fryer. The heat crisps up the top cookie crust layer to perfection. It's sweet, it's buttery, it's crumbly. All on top of a nice bun, fluffy yet chewy. (5/5) Potato Croquette Bun ($3.50) - The croquette crisps up decently in the oven. Inside is a very smooth potato mash. Sweet and tangy, thick tonkastu-like sauce drizzled on top. Tastes a little oily. Some carrot mixed in. (4/5) Takoyaki Bun ($3.50) - Pretty similar to the croquette bun, but with two soft takoyaki embedded in the bun. There's an octopus tentacle inside each takoyaki, giving texture and flavor. (4/5) Red Bean Bun ($4) - Not much to say about this. Same outer bread shell with a large hole in the center about half filled with a not-too-sweet red bean paste. My friend recently bought me a few things from here. Had the egg Sando and it wasn't bad . Def not as good as from Japan but acceptable. The milk bread was pretty good though. Having been to a few Japanese bakeries, I was quite excited to hear that there was one in the metro Vancouver area. I went with my SO and we decided to pick up a beverage, a curry pan, and a katsu burger (which was because I was rather hungry at that point). The food quality was fine, but nothing to write home about. I think the pastries and selection were quite good, so I'll likely come back to buy some pan for the future. They also have a little market next doors too where you can buy them frozen (and ready for reheating) so that's great as well. I would advise against their burgers as while they're not bad, they're also not great. That's probably on me for deciding to order a burger at a bakery, but considering it was on their menu it seemed like a fair point to make. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the overall vibe was very homely. I'd recommend dropping by for their pastries; not sure if I'd stay here for extended periods for studying (although I noticed there was room for longer stays) however. read more

They provide a wide varieties of options on bread, pastries, and sandwiches. Customers must be able to find something that they like. The bakery started to sell products in farmers market and then expanded to do business in store having a shop or bakery and then did renovation and/or added more decor inside. Now the bakery has become more well equipped and it is more like a Japanese homey type of bakery/restaurant look and feel. Customer service is always good. As you know, Japanese people are always very polite and friendly. The staff or servers are always patient to all customers. There is free street parking, so no parking concerns here. I finally visited this bakery after seeing them at so many markets. The cafe has an even bigger selection of baked goods than they bring to the markets (including hot curry pan), a coffee/tea bar, and on Saturday, sandwiches. Non-dairy milk (oat or soy) is offered for drinks, but vegan options are limited to bread rolls/loaves and the croquette bun. There's also a little retail area with tea and some crafts. The shop is nothing fancy but it's cute and unpretentious, and clean. As you might expect from a Japanese establishment, the staff is super polite. I got a veggie curry pan ($6), a slice of mont blanc tart ($8.25, it was a big slice), and a black sesame latte ($5.5). Again, I really enjoyed everything. The curry pan is almost like a curry-filled donut with its airy texture. The panko coating gave the outside a nice crunch. I found there was a good amount of the filling but not too much, so it wasn't spilling out. It tasted so fresh. I don't think I've tried something like this before and it was very memorable! The mont blanc tart was also delicious, just the right amount of rich and not too sweet. The black sesame latte used coarser-ground black sesame than other black sesame lattes I've tried. I got it unsweetened so I got to enjoy the straightforward nutty black sesame flavour. The bakery is a little out of the way for me but even so maybe I'll go back since it was a fun place to visit. Ordered a selection of sweet and savoury items and 5/6 of them were underwhelming. 1. Japanese curry pan: 5/5 (deep fried goodness, the best of the bunch) 2. Matcha roll: 3.5/5 (okay, 2nd best of the bunch) 3. Melon pan: 3/5 (just ok but doesn't hold a candle to melon pan in Japan) 4. Tear apart bun: 2/5 (looks cute but custard filling tasted bland) 5. We wandered into this cozy little bakery on a rainy Sunday because we were staying close by. We got a variety of pastries including the yuzu danish, curry roll, strawberry matcha melonpan, onion cheddar roll, original melon pan, and the orange chocolate swirl bun. Every pastry was light, not too dense, and for the sweet pastries, not too sweet. You could taste the flavor, but it wasn't overwhelming. The savory pastries were also very soft and light, and the green onion cheddar was perfectly cheesy and delicious. The curry roll was interesting, basically a curry.filled donut with panko breading on the outside. I enjoyed it. The curry filling was a little sweet but also savory, and I like the crunchiness of the fried panko breading. Overall, the yuzu danish was my favorite, as it tasted like a lighter version of a lemon danish. I also got a black sesame latte. I did not add any sweetener and the roasted sesame flavor was really nice. I guess they grind up sesame seeds and put them in the syrup maybe because there was a very distinct texture of ground sesame seeds in my drink, especially as I got to the bottom. I didn't mind it, but if you are someone who is picky about textures or don't like pulp in your OJ then this might not be the drink for you. There was only one person working it seemed and she was pleasant and made some recommendations to us. A few people walked in behind us and it seemed like she got a little flustered, but the food is worth the wait so no one was upset. read more

This is a solid Japanese bakery who carries a line of variety bread from curry pan to melon pan to syokupan. They have some gluten free choices. I love curry bread with fairly sweet curry filling, sausage bread and maple syokupan! I bought 70CAD worth of bread that I wanted to try. I tried all of them so far and am very pleased as they are all very authentic that I feel like having bread from Japan. I am a fan now I can say. Both sweet and savory bread are really good. It's been 2 weeks since the visit, I am still enjoying syokupan right out of my freezer toasted for breakfast! The service is fairly quick and the staff answers all your questions you may have. Fairly new to this neighbourhood (opened in December/20) this local Japanese bakery offers a selection of 'not too sweet' buns, drinks and savoury food as well. Take a look at the pics I posted! Kanadell Japanese Bakery is a new bakery that has popped up along Hastings street across from Kootney Loop bus station. The best thing about Kanadell Japanese Bakery is that they make everything in house fresh daily! The bakery café offers a few tables to sit at but most people take their orders to go. You are greeted with the delicious smell of freshly baked bread when you walk into the bakery. We went an hour before closing time so there weren't many pastries left in the bakery but we saw bakers making batches for the next day in the back. They have a variety of breads to offer here including rolls, specialty Japanese buns and deep fried curry bread! Grayson loves earl grey tea so he decided to get the Earl Grey melon pan. Melon Pan is a type of Japanese sweet bread that is topped with a cookie crust. It's similar to the Chinese pineapple bun. The bread was fluffy and the sugar cookie crust on top was strong in Earl Grey flavour. He liked that even though there was a cookie crust, it wasn't very sweet. We will definitely be back to try some of their other flavours! I decided to try the yuzu cheese bun because I've never tried a bun with yuzu before! The cheese bun was made similar to a cinnamon scroll and was SO soft and fluffy! There was the perfect amount of cheese sprinkled on top and there were slices of green onion on the inside layers. I didn't detect any yuzu so that part was disappointing but the bun was so good that it's hard to be too upset about. Me and my best friend happen to be walking down to a restaurant that wasn't gonna be open until an hour later but we were hungry now and wanted to stay warm so we walked in here and ordered a few things to hold us over until our dinner. It was all so good I loved the matcha bar so much it had a lot of flavor and coconut shreds in it. The cashier in the front was really sweet and we wish we could've tried more. This is such a cute little bakery shop! I was searching for milk bread to make whipped cream fruit sandwiches and they have a maple loaf that worked perfectly. It was very soft and had a nice sweet flavour that wasn't too overpowering. It was around $11 which seems expensive but it's a pretty standard amount and is comparable to what a lot of Commercial Drive bakery's charge for their sourdough loaves (which I gladly buy for special occasions). I also got the vanilla/chocolate bear bread, they are sold as an attached pair and are filled with Nutella. They were such a nice treat. We also tried the melon pan matcha bun. I've always seen photos of these and have always wanted to try one and boy, I'm glad I did. They are delicious. The shop itself serves lots of tea and matcha drinks, there's a sitting area for people to sit and enjoy a snack. It's definitely a bakery first and a cafe second -- it is cute but also simple and humble looking, which is more than fine with me. I asked for an iced americano misto, they didn't even know what that meant and filled up my cup w only water. Then I asked them to just dump a bit out and pour in oat milk for me. Each time I drive pass Kanadell on the weekend, I would noticed a long line up before 10am. I dislike lineups so I stopped by on a weekday since I had the afternoon. I ordered 2 curry pan, bear animal bread and an earl grey melon pan. -bear animal bread - 4 stars - these cute buns are soft and the Nutella filling is quite unique. I haven't found anything like this elsewhere. I will have to pick up these when i visit my friends with kids. TLDR; good stuff but if there's a line it moves really slow and makes the experience not worth it. The melon pan, beef curry pan, Japanese sandos are all nice (tuna and egg in particular. Katsu are a bit cold and dry). Maple cream loaf is nice but $8 nice? I dunno. The bear buns are super cute and the kids dig them. The biggest problem is the slow moving line. They are not set up for volume and they can serve about 1 customer every 4-6 minutes so it's going to be a while. I would totally drop in if there wasn't a line or a 5 minute one.
