Had an appointment with I believe Doug or Tony, can't recall, who came out, talked for nearly 2 hours with big ideas, and plans. Overly inflated how wonderful they are and would have quotes and digital plans over within a few days to review. Crickets. . . . . . Then 'ping' - email, and have to admit they were gorgeous! Overly inflated with big ideas and plans, some of what we talked about, some left off, others completely ignored. Also with invitation to visit the showroom. Which we did. Nice place. About it. Reviewed the estimate, made adjustments, talked budget; of course, removed some wants, added some necessary pool mechanical equipment. Said he'll be in touch. Crickets . . . . . Received new design with more inflated smaller ideas and plans, some of what we talked about, some left off, others completely ignored. Called mentioned budget as that ticked down, a little. He stated he'll work on it get back to us. Few more days new plans and rough estimate. Embarrassing! Absolutely nothing discussed was resolved and the new plans were insulting to what was discussed. Waste of time. If you have disposable income, there are possibilities. If your budget is still wanting down scaled elegance, with the core bones of the originally mentioned design; not here. After posting this review, I was contacted by Unique to let me know that the head superintendent Bart woul like to meet with me and discuss the project. Meeting with him gave me the conf to continue with Unique to let them try to make it right. It took abo 3 months to do so, and two separate attempts on getting the pool stain out, but it is now complete. Unique also added some landscaping to revive what they had previously done on another job that was affected by their original poor job on the drainage, and they were willing to take items I was unhappy with off the bill. I am amending my review from the original one star to three stars. In sum, my recommendation would be to not use Unique for jobs smaller than an entire backyard. That seems to have been our issue this time. I believe that they gave me no prior either with the selection of people to work my job or with timing to get things done. None of this pain needed to happen other than for those two reasons. Bart was professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant in contrast to my original experience. read more

Our pool was completed towards the end of 2021. It looks 20+ years old already. I would not recommend this company to anyone. We have cracked travertine tiles all over the decking and spa ledge. We had cracked pool tiles within a few months of completion. We have stains all over the floor/sides of our pool. (From the water not circulating properly) Our lighting was tripping within months, and 2 pool lights burnt out. Which they did rectify only because the lighting was still covered through the lighting company - not Unique. The travertine decking separated from the pool base (inside the pool), etc. Our decking is uneven and looks awful. We contacted them a couple years ago after our warranty was up, hoping they would do right by their product and was told we are out of luck, and had to pay excessive labor fees and whatever it was to fix their poor workmanship, after already paying what we did when purchased. What brings me to this review today, is its going to cost near what it did to build to correct all these errors. Buyer beware, unless you plan to renovate your pool a year or two after completion, look elsewhere. read more

It cost me thousands of dollars not to listen to the review on Yelp that said: after you sign the contract, that's when the price increases will begin. Before the contract, I asked both Chris and the designer about that review and that concern, and both allayed any of my concerns. After we put 10% down, within weeks we were told we needed to sign a change order to pay more, AND that they would not deliver the project promised for the price promised. It was a very, very expensive mistake to sign a contract rather than listen to the Yelp review. We are now starting from scratch and have paid another designer to come up with a real plan that can be implemented within our six-figure budget. Buyer beware! read more

So just an update 5 months and some change later. Pool still isn't done waiting a month plus for pebbletech install. Communication got better for a bit but back to same old. Now that most of the stuff is done we are like the redheaded stepchild. Maybe someone will show up to work on one of many items still not complete or to come back and fix the problems we point out from poor workmanship as we see them. Like digging a trench through my yard (after we agreed not to do this in the beginning and after 4 month of saying they were going to send out an electrician but never did including at the initial walk through) and then filling it without tamping it and covering with my landscape rock. So it has sunk in through my whole yard,for a month and a half I have been asking them to fix it but still have not. Also these guys have trashed the place and do not clean up after themselves. I'm talking soda cans, food wrappers all over the ground despite there being 4 garbage cans in the immediate area, nails, rebar strewn all over my yard. There is no concern for the customers from this company, the customer is a necesarry irritation to them. I would be ashamed to work for a company that conducts themselves like that. I have been having problems since the beginning with them not telling me when someone will show up (I have dogs that can be less than friendly and lock them inside when workers are in the yard. On Tuesday they sent a note saying painting would happen on Monday. On Friday at 4pm I hear my dogs going crazy in the yard I go out to find a woman on my back porch and not wearing a unique t shirt. I ask what the hell she is doing says she is the painter. I ask why not in a unique shirt and why she just let herself in?!?!?! After we got through all that and she is leaving she picks up her hammer and tools says I could get the gate open had to beat it with my hammer! What the heck??? Who does that? We started the process by having Unique help us design both the pool and all landscaping. I would recommend starting as early as possible so you have plenty of time to design and get everything as you would like. I worked with Unique very closely on ensuring our pool would operate they way we want, it was not easy on how we would like to operate and automate our pool. Chris (the owner) personally got involved as we were finishing the pool and worked through all the systems to ensure great operation! We were referred to Unique by a friend after they redid her pool decking and did a great job. We were looking for a full back yard remodel including the pool decking with a budget of $25k- $30k and unfortunately Unique wouldn't even come out to quote as they don't do jobs under $30k even though they just did my friends pool decking and way below $30k. We contracted Unique to build a Ramada with pavers and artificial grass in our back yard. Our sales person did an excellent job getting our plan onto paper. The crew that installed the pavers did an excellent job. They completed an S shaped walkway for us that required a lot of skill and it turned out beautiful. The Ramada turned out nice. We had a few communications issues and the framers needed to slow down and follow the engineered plans. They also showed up at 6AM on Sunday morning without any notice. Scared my wife to death. I loved the roofing crew. They did an excellent job and provided excellent communication with us. The painters didn't finish their work and didn't put much effort into the painting they did accomplish. The artificial grass installation crew (subcontractor) was awesome. The grass looks amazing and they kept us informed during their work. My wife and I have been involved with many contractors in the past. The biggest area of frustration during the project was poor communication. Our superintendent didn't communicate very well with us. We often had no idea of the status of our project. Unique uses ProEdge which is a program that tracks the status of the project. ProEdge and Unique's superintendent where not on the same page. With better communications from the superintendent we would have given Unique five stars. Unique is about as good as you are going to get, today in the Phoenix area. Overall we are happy with the project and we would allow them to bid on future projects for us. read more

Unique just completed our front and backyard and we are very pleased. We had them complete a pool, jacuzzi, outdoor kitchen, landscape of front and back yards with lighting and misters. Bart the project manager was very involved and always easy to get ahold of. I even received a personal call from the owner (Chris) at the end to make sure I understood how to care for the pool! While the whole process was never fast enough for us while it was happening, looking back it was faster than most of our neighbor's pool who went with different companies and Bart was always honest with us about how quickly things could get done. I signed a contract to build a ramada in my backyard on August 1, 2018 with Unique Landscape, the project was finally completed on March 1, 2019; yes, that's right, the same amount of time we could've built an entire house! My experience with Unique was very poor, marked by terrible project management, delays, poor craftmanship and too many excuses to count. I was first promised completion around Halloween, then just after Thanksgiving, then late December, on and on and on. Roofers employed rarely showed up for work, the project manager never took control of the process and refused to do any trade work in parallel (if the roofer vanishes for two weeks go ahead and have electrical proceed, etc.). The project also failed at least four inspections with the city inspector, due to structure deficiencies. I actually have a video camera in my backyard where I've recorded the project management team saying the quality was bad and usually the crew does a much better job, followed by "sh*t, he's got a camera and it's on". Every small piece of progress was fraught with pain and delay. Several large issues, but even the small stuff; I paid about $50K for a pretty nice design and I had to text the company and say "for 50 grand can someone go out and cleanup and wipe down the new appliances?" The fact that someone paying that much wouldn't get a basic level of service, without asking, is ridiculous. They claimed to have fired some of those accountable for the poor process and workmanship (I don't believe they actually did); well that's just great now, glad my project could be the one that was so bad that people got fired (supposedly). Luckily 90%+ of my communication with unique is documented either via text and/or with the outdoor video camera, so their blunders and screw ups are clearly evidenced. When I engaged this company I really believed they valued their reputation and quality of work but that was not the experience I had; I've had three people in my neighborhood inquire about the project; I've told them all to avoid this company. 4/2 response - thanks for proving my point in your response; you continue to avoid any responsibility and admit that you did anything materially wrong. Thanks for filling out my satisfaction survey by saying my product came out great and that I should be happy. FYI, this company has 15 5-star ratings and 10 1-star ratings; good luck rolling the dice, it will either be a smashing success or an abysmal failure.... read more

Our transaction with this company was really poor. It's a shame it went the way it did. The Unique Sales guy came to our house and built out a beautiful pool with everything we wanted - 52k... After the CONTRACT went to the engineer team, they stated that many items in the drawing were not included in the contract. They refused to honor the drawing and what their sales guy promised. We decided to part ways with the company and asked for our deposit back because it was their errors that led us to cancel. They claimed it was a "Wrongful Termination" and refused to give us the deposit. We are bummed. We wanted to do the project with them and had 25k in future projects planned with them but at the end of the day, we cannot work with a company that will not take responsibility for their mistakes. We did a major backyard remodel with Unique landscapes on an acre lot. Chris is an "upfront and get things done" type of a personallity, but not pushy. We had quite a few changes during the build and Chris never gave us a hard time. He just got them done. His pricing is very fair and we had people working constantly for 6 months. The job was completed about 4 months ago. Since then we had a few minor issues (grill burner broke and a plant died) Chris was just as responsive to fix this problems as he was during the build. Like the other reviews, I'd like to give them zero stars. We started our very large project in October 2015 (signed contract) & it is now end of June 2016, still not completed. Calling the owner does not help, in one ear out the other. Staff appears to be thinly spread, over-worked, too busy, whatever. Poor communication, poor planning, poor customer service. The customer does not come first. There were several weeks where no workers worked. They also do not work Saturdays (which would have been nice to know during quote process). Can't say much about the actual workmanship that has been done so far because I can't seem to tell who is an employee of Unique versus who they outsourced some parts to. We have done everything they have asked us to do in timely manners, yet the same has not been reciprocated. Very one-sided. No one seems to care about our project; we just want it done. Since we are in the pool business, we will definitely NOT be referring any of our 120 customers to them. read more

To begin, I sought several quotes for our project. One thing that caused Unique to stand out was 1) RESPONSIVENESS (received email back same day I expressed interest in this company inquiring when I'd like to meet with a design rep), 2) CONSISTENT UPFRONT COMMUNICATION (other companies would delay or sometimes not respond to emails but I generally received email response back the same day), 3) HELPFUL WEBSITE (very nice portfolio that was absent many other companies' websites and increased my confidence about moving forward with this company). I give this company an A rating because I now have an absolutely beautiful fire pit that I'm proud of. The flagstone work really is something else. I attached a few pics, probably doesn't do justice though. And as you'd expect it's mostly appreciated at night with the firepit and 2 fire columns lit up and the high quality lighting tucked under the bench wall. The softscaping around the fire pit is still lacking, but that's because I've taken too long deciding on how I want the plants done, but I can't wait to complete that part of it which will truly help showcase this beautiful piece of masonry. The primary foreman responsible for completion of this project, Ron Pickard, was quite wonderful to work with. Aside from being quite competent and responsive it's obvious he cares about making sure the client is happy with all the details of the project. Another thing I should mention is that the owner of the company, Chris Griffin, takes an active interest in all his projects and comes across as competent, caring, professional, and very objective. As far as objectivity I appreciate his candor regarding the implications of maintaining a salt water pool while upgrading the pool decking to travertine. Other companies were excited to recommend it as it is a huge upsell. However, Unique's owner wanted to make sure I knew of the potential consequences of such a move (some people find that salt water can negatively affect their natural travertine stone - certain grades and colors more than others - a risk I didn't want to take). Ultimately when I decided I wasn't willing to give up a salt water system (and didn't want to routinely pay for an expensive travertine sealant that would protect it from the salt water) it was decided not to pursue a travertine decking. And it's nice that this information is also found on Unique's website, something I have not seen on any other Phoenix landscaping website. I would use Unique again in the future and recommend them to my friends and colleagues. read more

Mike (construction manager) was present and available for questions. The construction crews were always conscientious of our space. As with any construction project there were some unforeseen issues, however all issues were mutually resolved in a timely manner. Very happy with our decision in choosing Unique. From the start they were responsive. I had contacted a number of other landscape architects and design companies and individual contractors. Unique was the only one that called me and emailed me back promptly. Then during the initial process and design period, Chad was very flexible and came to our home after hours and made the process easy and comfortable. I considered hiring a laborer for some of the work and contracting it myself but we didn't have the time to manage contractors and didn't want to deal with the risks involved not hiring a legitimate company. We are very happy we went with Unique instead because it was stress free and a fun process with them. It was amazing how a whole crew came in worked daily to get the job done, they were all so nice and respectful. We are extremely happy with the results of the front and back exterior of our home is stunning compared to the 20 year old landscaping that was there before that we redid. They redid our front yard, adding a beautiful courtyard w fountain, a turret over our front door and a complete overhaul of our backyard, complete w a new travertine patio, firepit, fire columns, new spa deck and more. After getting several quotes we decided on using Unique to build our entire yard. Initial sales and design was handled by Mike Trail who was fantastic. Wonderful ideas that gave our yard the Wow factor we were looking for. Construction of the pool was headed by Donny Schmuhl who was great to deal with. Excellent follow up and handled the dig and plumbing perfectly. Donny was consistently avail and answered all of our questions quickly. Construction of the outdoor kitchen, hardscape, plants and misters was handled by Ron Pickard. Ron is awesome. Great follow-up and a pleasure to work with. I communicated with Ron on a daily basis. He was always avail and followed-up on every question. Fantastic! Ron was a true pleasure to deal with. Our project was huge and a few hic-ups are expected to occur, what's amazing is how those issues were addressed and corrected with ease and efficiency. I contacted Unique to landscape an entire backyard from scratch. We scheduled a meeting at our property to discuss our wishes and concerns. Notes were taken and suggestions were provided. A design was presented to us in a week. In the end we had drainage, retaining walls, electrical plumbing, gas plumbing, drinking water plumbing, irrigation installed, paver patio installed, outdoor kitchen (5 burner grill, side burner, 2 drawer storage, outdoor sink, outdoor refrigerator, tile and flagstone counters with a cantilever, pergola over the outdoor kitchen), gas fire pit with flagstone topped masonry bench, a half-sunken hot tub with flagstone top, artificial turf area with a paver edging, landscape lighting and countless plants and trees. Once the work was started the work continued without interruption until the job was completed. The team did not start and then move to another job elsewhere then come back etc..The integrity of the team and the work performed is second to none. Unique still communicates with us to validate everything is going well. Recently one of the landscape lights had stopped working. We filled a form out online and within 3 days the light was replaced no charge. I am so impressed with how stress free the process was for us as the owners. This was a huge undertaking that took a few months to complete. Unique makes it easy to communicate so everyone was always on the same page. After the work was completed our neighbor came over to see the results. He ended up going with Unique to landscape his entire yard and had the same results. read more

Bought a house in Chandler last month in which the previous owner had contracted with Unique to design and build swimming pool 4+ years ago. Pool water feature had stone tiles that were flaking and falling apart, with most of the stone disintegrating. Also the flagstone deck had been sealed with super slippery sealant rather than penetrating seal, and it too was failing in many places. Contacted Unique for help in identifying the sealant used so I could remove it in the most effective manner, and for help repairing the faulty stone. Was told they don't do repairs or service outside of their 2-year warranty. Directed me to Home Depot for sealant (they suggested Miracle, but that is not what they had applied previously) and directed me to call a retail tile repair company. Quite surprised and disappointed that Unique made no effort to find out any information about the outcome from their work, and basically just brushed me off to fend for solution on my own. While this review is only based upon that call, and I'm not an original customer, I think their complacency in caring about the failure of their work (in less than 5 years) reflects badly upon the ownership and their commitment to stand behind the products and services they sell. read more

If you're looking to do something for 5,000 and under don't even bother requesting a quote. The first email response I received from Chris Griffin the president stated he looked forward to contacting us and that his company would gather information on what we were looking for. Well, 8 hours later I got a second email from Mr. Griffin stating his company was too busy with 'larger projects' to basically bother with a 'small project' like ours as he put it, he was so kind to give us a referral to 2 other companies who would be able to help us with our smaller project. The end result: We love our backyard and are super happy with it, they did see our vision. We did a pool, pavers, pergola with the waterfall feature, BBQ station, some turf areas and irrigation ( no trees). Michael was our designer/consultant, he was very professional, responsive, and listen to what we wanted (which is a huge plus for us). The construction crew was very polite, professional and they listen and address all of our concerns. Eric was their supervisor, and was prompt to respond, professional, patient with us ( we are not easy clients) and he responded and addressed our concerns. Pam in the office was super nice! and on point with the paperwork. Now, lets get to what you all want to know of the "what happened in between" part and why I did not give them 5 stars. As any big project there will be hiccups and this one was not the exception, there were many items that we had to address in fear that they will be overlooked, Eric and his crew were very diligent in those when we brought them up, so big THANKS. There were a few days were the crew wouldn't show up because they had to be at another site which we understand but a little heads up would have been good, I did notified Eric right away and he informed me of the reason they didn't make it. Like another reviewer mentioned, we didn't know they don't have their crew working on Saturdays, which again we just wanted to know ahead of time. Our project started early March 2016 and we were jumping in the pool early July 2016. After the project: We had a few minor service requests and they took care of those right away and with no hesitation. Would I recommend them? We are very happy with our new backyard! The backyard did take a little longer then I expected, but worth the wait. When I had an issue it was taken care of quickly and to my satisfaction. We had a kitchen area with a grill and fireplace and a pergola. We also moved the spa next to the pool and added a waterfall. We also added a fence and lighting. It's absolutely beautiful at night. The workmanship is very good. We will enjoy our new retreat for many years. My backyard looks even more beautiful then I imagined it would.
