Of course we all feel that air travel is expensive and often times seems like a rip off but let me tell you, I am not a fan of United at all! Expensive, restrictive baggage requirements and allotments and I would not recommend. I would also not recommend bothering to purchase first class or a first class upgrade on anything less than six hours. It gets you absolutely nothing. You get a seat upfront but you still have to wait for four different categories of people boarding before you, snacks and drinks are OK but you cannot use the VIP lounge without paying an additional $60 so really upgrading or purchasing first class doesn't really get you anything unless you're on a very long flight and really really really need a little extra legroom and when I say a little, I mean a little! Try to fly another airline if you can. read more

Don't do it. Although some of the things that went wrong for us, are more then likely the fault of the airport, United did not help any. Heed the warnings for the airport as well. Follow your instinct which should be screaming to you "noo..never ever will I fly out of the heart of darkness". Because that is what this experience is. Beginning..the flight has a good chance of being delayed. It always happens here. Best to call before hand but even if you do they may not tell you the truth about whether the flight is on time. How do I know this? Because it happened to us. And many of the hapless passengers who apparently also called only to be told..flight's on time. No. it. was. not. And _____redacted. So...redacted". That is truly the nuts and bolts of it. As we waited for our flight, we were hearded into a bus to drive us to our plane. The bus never left though. Well..not for another..don't know..half hour became 45 minutes became an hour..you get the drift. It just kinda sat there. With us inside it. And sat and sat. Hole in top of bus ceiling..cold droplets of rain start falling through the ceiling..onto of coarse the passengers. It was a nightmare that I would not wish on my worst enemy. Even enemies have rights. NOBODY should ever have this happen. Thank god no babies or elderly people on that bus because they would have likely caught pneumonia. To sum up..a terrible experience that shows the worst of flying. They should be paying US to fly their friendly skies. And even if they did, not sure I'd take em up on it. One star. The staffs were rude, not close to being helpful. Basically does the minimum to help you and expect you to have great attitude about it afterwards. It just doesn't make sense. Flying into Newark was awful, the flight attendant not only made rude remarks, she basically tried avoiding eye contact with me for the rest of the flight because she knew she was at the wrong but didn't want to admit it. Okay yes I'm still a fan of United Airlines but these continued miss calculations of arrivals and departures out of Newark are ridiculous, it seems the delays are more frequent than ever. Flying in and out of Newark has rarely been a pleasant experience but it's very difficult for me to believe that some of these delays aren't self-inflicted with the tight connection times and sheer volume so just say it "We screwed up". I'm getting a little tried of hearing - "waiting on inbound aircraft", "delayed flight crews", and "air traffic stops and congestion". If you're going to delay me United Airlines please try and offer reasonable delay times and stop increasing the delays in 5 minute increments- you can do better than that. You've updated your fleet, some of your clubs and even your coffee it doesn't seem that difficult to see that I could care less about most of these upgrades I just want to get from point A to point B. I gave a realistic review over 6 years ago. I have avoided united for all this time and flown Delta and American with great experiences whenever I can. My family has given United two chances this summer. I am now 2 for 2 on lost bags. TJ Max and Target are my go to shopping to load up on clothes and toiletries that United cannot get to the right destination. 1000s of dollars spent. Tomorrow will be Father's Day which is a big disappointment because we most likely won't be able to see our families. Very disappointed with this company, we had planned to leave at 9pm on Sunday night. First of all, our flight was 1 hour late, and when we finally got on board, we had to wait 2 hours in the plane because the weather did not allow us to leave, and it was necessary to de-ice the plane because of snowfall. So far, I understand that it's not the airline's fault... But then, they explained to us that their staff on board had worked too many hours and that it was not possible to take off from Newark to Atlanta. From that moment on, I think that it is the airline's responsibility to anticipate the necessary personnel in case of a risk of disruption on the air traffic. At the end, a solution was found, after waiting for almost 8 hours in the airport... We booked another flight the next day at 9pm and we were able to get a hotel about 20 minutes away at 4am... and only 60$ for two people to eat on Monday noon and Monday evening, which is clearly insufficient... The customer service explained to us that it was already a chance that we had a hotel because they are not obliged in case of weather problems, and that we would not have any financial compensation related to this. I am very disappointed by this behavior, because it was clearly a fault of the airline that did not have the necessary staff to take off, because the other airlines were doing it, which was not only a weather problem anymore... However, the customer service staff is certainly not to blame, and the situation was certainly complicated for them to handle, and they tried to be as professional as possible, which was appreciated. Literally out of the whole airport, there's only two United Airlines Customer service with only one person on each side. Sometimes there's two but there's mainly just one. Is this why their ratings are this bad? One supervisor came and told us to wait patiently but people in line got really mad. So, the supervisor came with bottled water and snacks but that didn't help with anything. He came with pillows and blankets which usually are used for the airplanes. The created this couple seating in the middle. The flight attendants were okay. One did 90 percent of the work. There were a few disruptive passengers, but that was expected and taken care of. The standards have lost way to technology and convenience. This poor designs and business practices need to be reevaluated for customer, otherwise government bailout will be the standard for piss poor business decisions and practices. U am not seeing quality assurances or protocols. I see senior, advanced, aged employees on flights that may or may not handle the 12 hour trip. I see limited focus on design and comfort and more to pack more people in the same space for more money. I see little effort in meal prep to include flavor, chef inspiration, and mass producible. I see effort in wifi and technology, but again sacrificing comfort and ease of use. New seat belt design like in a car with a shoulder belt. . .why? What is the chance of survivability in a crash. 5-7% with everything going correctly. So you put in shoulder belt to increase perception of safety? I have to voice my displeasure with United and their staff at Newark international airport. Our flight on April 10th was cancelled due to weather conditions which we understand. We where placed on stand by for the next flight that left at 8:00 P.M. and did not get on due to weight restrictions of the aircraft, we will get back to this. When where then booked on flight 44175 or so we thought. We asked about lodging and/or vouchers seeing as the flight left 16 hours later. Opposed to being empathetic and trying to help during a stressful situation the gate attendant was rude and condescending saying that UA was not in charge of the weather nor could they control it. Somehow during the time of that interaction and the end of her shift she failed to follow through with booking us on the flight. After trying unsuccessfully to check in we arrived at the airport only to find we had not been given reservations and we would have to fly stand by but not in to worry there are 9 open seats and you two are the first to have your name on the stand by list. Fast forward 3 hours we confirmed that we did indeed have assigned seats! Upon checking in we were told after scanning our boarding passes to stand aside until they talked to the Pilot because there is a "weight restriction" on the flight and we may not be able to get on the flight Understandable, I guess, the ticket agent told us that there where no passengers that have been cleared and we will have to wait another three hours for the next flight. This is when all logic for me was thrown out of the window, we where told that there was a weight restriction so we could not board? Seems logical....however after denying us our seats they allowed three United airline crew members to board the plane, I thought there where weight restrictions? I made reservations months in advance. They emailed me a month later that they were putting me on a different flight, different time. Not cool, I had to call to change times at my vacation spot, and lost 1/2 a day of vacation. The flight was maxed out, absolutely no empty seats, for my trip there and back. I'm short. But my knees touch the seat in front of me when I sit. I can't see the plug below my seat, so I have to feel the outlet to plug it in. So to compensate, I put my small laptop bag (15L) in the overhead. Problem averted? Not quite. A flight attendant comes by and takes all the small to medium items out of the overhead and forces us to put them under the seat in front of us. He even starts berating customers who put bags in the overhead when they could be shoved under the seat in front. I fly United whenever I go anywhere. I am a card member and I do appreciate the perks such as free United club passes, miles and discounts at certain stores. However, I was thoroughly unimpressed while flying to and from Las Vegas, NV in July during covid 19. Little go no safety precautions- my entire row on the plane was full. All 6 seats across. It was even more baffling to me that they did this on the flight on the way home from Las Vegas- several days before the governor shut down bars and various other spots because they were experiencing a major spike in covid 19 cases. I don't fly United often unless I'm leaving the country. The last time I flew United, it was to Japan and South Korea, so they fed us and gave us free beer and wine. I thought that would be the case on Thursday, September 24th when flying from AUA in Aruba to EWR in New Jersey. It is international after all, right? But no, they only gave us complimentary non alcoholic beverages. No snacks at all. Now, I normally don't even eat the snacks on domestic flights, but we were catching another flight from EWR to SFO in San Francisco. If our plane had landed late, there was no way we would have been able to grab a bite to eat before hopping on our next flight. We would have been forced to pay for plane food. Luckily, we landed a little early and our layover was an hour, so we had time to grab some real food and take it on the plane. I'm normally not a penny pincher in any way, but 12.5 hours of flying without a snack is ridiculous! Even some one hour plane rides give you peanuts. And the airline I took to AUA fed us two meals and a snack. And the second flight was only two hours long. They gave us free alcohol and a breakfast sandwich! United, why are you so cheap?! The Caribbean is still an international flight. Why not feed your patrons? Alright for longer international flights, but I try to stay away from United when flying domestic. Flew Business First from EWR - SFO w/ Premier Access the other day. Check-in was a breeze w/ ~10 counters and 2 passengers. Security checkpoint was also a breeze as Premier Access had their separate security screening line! Access to United Club was refreshing as it was quiet, had a few snacks, and got some work done before my flight with FREE Wifi! Boarded via Group 1 and the seat in Business First was spacious! Luggage is FREE so none of the Business First passengers brought along their 2 pieces of luggage on board, making boarding that much easier! :) Despite an old aircraft, the restroom was remodeled. Throughout the entire flight, there was FREE DirecTV, FREE Headset, FREE blanket, and full meal service. Drinks were constantly refilled. The Prawns from the Appetizer were excellent and the garlic bread was also top notch. The Short Rib of Beef was overcooked and dry. The sundae to finish off the meal was a nice touch. This airline lost my luggage on our flight from Newark to Providenciales in August 2018. My luggage finally made it to our hotel 3 days later, but a wheel was broken off my brand new Kenneth Cole spinner wheel suitcase. I spent over $200 trying to call United in this process since I was on an island outside of the US, plus another few hundred on clothing and toiletries. Upon return, we only received a $100 travel voucher and a $250 check. We didn't want to fly United again, but we had the travel voucher, so we flew United in August 2019 to and from Bozeman, MT. United lost my luggage again. Hard to believe, right? It finally showed up 2 days later. On our return flight back to Newark, our flight was rerouted mid flight to Chicago due to an impending thunderstorm in the NY/NJ area. They should have cancelled before departing Bozeman. Instead, we had to scramble to find a new flight from Chicago and find a place to stay in an unfamiliar city. The lines we waited in to find another flight in the airport were ridiculously long and not moving. Then, some United employees told us that the line we had been waiting in had to close so they could use that gate for an incoming flight. We had been standing in that line for nothing. We finally found a hotel and a flight for the next morning. United gave us no reimbursement for our hotel. On our flight, the crew ran out of complimentary snacks. Laughable at this point. When we arrived back in Newark, the luggage situation was a nightmare. We were told to stand in a long customer service line to claim our luggage. After waiting for 55 minutes, another customer told us that some bags from our flight were lined up against a wall unattended. I left the line and sure enough, my boyfriend's bag was there. Mine was still missing. I found out from another customer that more bags were in a room upstairs. I checked up there, and my bag was there. We had wasted close to an hour in another United line, and our bags had been unattended the entire time. One would think that United or Newark Airport employees should be directing passengers to their luggage. Instead it was total guess work and word of mouth. When I called United with this case, I was sent a $75 travel voucher (again, laughable) and we were promised a $200 check within 10-15 business days. It is now 2 months later and we still have not received the check. What a scam! Update- I called United again to find out why we hadn't received a check yet. I spoke to Bevin. He told me he needed to check on the case, and that he would call me back in 15 minutes. He finally called back 58 minutes later and said that my check had never been sent, but that it would arrive in 10-15 business days. I've heard that before. I write to offer as much data as possible for others who fly the specific route I fly, JFK-SFO. I have status on four carriers, including the highest level with Alaska and JetBlue; and I have as many as 80 flights booked at any given time. So I have studied this subject, and I initially offered thoughts for a colleague who had moved for a new job in Manhattan and left behind a family in the Bay Area. Coming out of the pandemic, flying has been a mess -- it wasn't enjoyable before, but the disruption of COVID-19 led to a spate of cancellations that at the worst probably meant half of my flights were altered in some manner. In summer 2022, for example, two of my flights, one in each direction, were cancelled at the last minute. I was paying attention to my email, however, and I was able to rebook on other airlines immediately, resulting in no effect on my work schedule. Here are notes on the four options, listed alphabetically. The other bit of background that is relevant is I live and work in Queens. That is significant. My apartment and my office are maybe 20 minutes from JFK without traffic and possibly less than that from LGA. I would adjust my calculations if I were in Manhattan. I've departed a couple of times from the city through EWR. Frequent flyers have various hacks. They no longer seem to require a Saturday stay for the best fare (which you could circumvent by booking two roundtrips overlapping one another, if you go back and forth regularly enough). But it sometimes, not always, is cheaper to book two one way fares, not a roundtrip. I don't have enough room to review Delta here due to the word limit. See my other reviews under the airlines at JFK. Alaska. The truth is I started flying Alaska because they acquired Virgin America. While it existed, my favorite airline was Virgin America. It was just better if you were headed to one of the handful of destinations it served. The prices were good, the service was great, and the overall vibe was just different in a noticeable manner. They allowed dogs out of carriers. That itself as huge. I remember seeing Metallica, the band, headed to Lollapalooza one summer, filling up the first class cabin. I even chatted with the lead guitarist. Alaska is not VA. Once my wife and I adjusted, we were okay with that. The other perq they have is the $99 companion fare, which others have copied, and that was a good enough incentive my wife and I both applied for their credit card (the deal is once per year). I am upgraded on Alaska much more than any other airline. They do not have lay-down flat seats up front, so it's not the great bonus it would be on JetBlue (where I have never been upgraded that far) or United (where I have not been upgraded since their new point system was instituted). I alternate Alaska and JetBlue. Both of them have fiddled with their schedules, which accounts for my in turn changing. Alaska had difficulties in 2022. It was in the news. They have sorted out things. JetBlue. I'd say JetBlue is my favorite airline. With Mosaic status, you can get into row 6 (not first class) for 100 points or 200 points, reduced from the 4000 points they were requesting previously and better than the $100 plus cash fee. They have free wifi but no lounge. Their service is friendly, but that might be a distorted impression due to occupying an upgraded seat. The Mint experience in pods with little half doors is terrific. I enjoyed it with miles when flying was especially dangerous during the lockdown and there was hardly anybody on board. United. United is another legacy carrier. They had a single gate at JFK, with a 5:10pm departure. It was perfect for my schedule. But United was unable to negotiate for more space, and, understandably, they decided to depart this airport for their EWR hub. (They explained, and I am persuaded, it would be inefficient to maintain operations with a single gate. The payroll could not be spread to enough passengers.) For my purposes, I cannot use EWR except when happen to be in Manhattan. They had great deals when air travel seemed high risk, and they had three redeyes with lay-down seats on some (they did not run the big planes for all the transcontinental flights; you'd need to study the schedules if that was important). If I have ground transportation from the city, United is a worthwhile choice. Their fares out of EWR are consistently better than their flights out of JFK when they had them, and they are good in absolute terms -- it may be as much as $100 (or, say 1/3) less. They say to be loyal to a single airline to accumulate miles. I have not done that. It has not mattered given the sheer number of miles I can amass even split among airlines. So I likely will continue to experiment. One tactic I have not pursued is using websites that monitor price fluctuations. I have found, through casual observation, that Alaska and JetBlue have consistently the lowest rates, but they vary over a significant range, with frequent sales. read more

The worse gate agents United Airlines is using a 3rd part vendors and they don't give A DAMN for any customers flying United. Was there yesterday to drop off my niece's husband and they were just standing behind the counter and point their fingers to an agent that was near at kiosk I WOULD NEVER DO OR EXPECT that from an United Airline employee or a vendor.
