This is the most disorganized post office I have been to in my life. They are very slow movers... I move to royal oak 4 months ago and the post office delivers an enormous amount of junk mail. It's so much that I missed checking my mailbox for two days and the usps stopped delivering mail to me. They cram massive amount of junk mail into my small mailbox. So much that the 3rd day, they couldn't put any more in so they told me I had 10 days to pick up my mail at the post office or they would close my account. Can you belive that? So I went to pick up my mail and it wasn't there. Then I called another number and they said it was at another location but would deliver it and I was told to come back the next day after 10:30am. I came back the 2nd day and it still wasn't there. Then I came back the third time and it still wasn't there. I spoke to the postmaster and I was irritated because 3 times I came to pick up my mail and they didn't have it. This is at the downtown royal oak post office. I also complained about receiving junk mail as I want it to stop. This is the reason why they stopped delivering my mail because of all the junk mail i receive which, THE USPS HAS PARTNERED WITH ALL THESE MARKETING COMPANIES AND THEY GET PAID TO PEDDLE THESE JUNK MAILS TO CONSUMERS. I TOLD THEM ITS HARASSMENT. A LOT OF THE BS MAIL THE USPS PEDDLES DOES NOT HAVE THE RESIDENTS NAME, IT JUST SAY RESIDENT. IT'S A RACKET AND THEY DON'T CARE. read more

This Location will forever be famous for the coined term "going postal" for the Roakens. How notable that the postal office in the downtown was famous for a very horrible incident long ago. According to Wiki the term as aforementioned, came about from a number of incidents that occurred from 1986 onward. That term became a reality in November 14 of 1991 here in Royal Oak. Despite the pure chaos and madness back in 1991, all has been calm since, thankfully. The post office is also a location where you can update your passport and take photos, which is a little known fact by a few folks. This building hasn't been updated, inside or outside, except maybe the addition of the ramp outside. It looks well for the carbon dating and well used. It's still an iconic building due to the incident back in 1991. Got to cut it some slack, since it looks like it's been around since the 1800s, is that true? When was this building erected on second Street? Does anyone know? I can't find it on a Google search easily. read more

It was a quick and easy visit to this post office for some packages I had to ship out. There were only a few people in front of me so my wait time was not too long (as per the usual USPS wait time), and that is how any visit to the post office should be. read more

I've come here several times to mail packages since they have such convenient evening hours. Other than parking (which always appears to be a challenge in Royal Ok), it's a pretty painless and quick visit. My last visit went so quickly I had time to grab a cocktail at another local establishment before going to an appointment. I recommend this location for your stamps and packages! read more

I ship on an average of 40 packages a day, with a total shipping cost of $300 a day. To come to this post office, not being greeted and skeleton staff, and then when you ask for a pouch to slip a label on the box....they act like they're taking their pants off for you. They rub it in, to buy and pay for a piece of tape, as if I was asking for an effing-handout. Too bad that online sellers like myself, are the reason, as to why the postal service is still alive and in service--rather than being closed down and out of business as they were supposed to 10 years ago. Procedures are inconsistent, which caused me to temporarily lose my P.O. Box of 10 years. When asked to speak to manager whom I could clearly see I was told he was unavailable. I left my number and the manager still did not call me. I don't think they truly care, wasted time and money looking to resolve an issue they admitted they did not do properly. read more

Seems everyone likes to hate their Post Office. Not me! I have had a PO Box in Royal Oak for 20 years and I live in Ferndale. You want nasty? Try the Ferndale Post Office. It's evil. Employees at other Post Offices laugh when Ferndale is brought up. I have heard "you the one where they play cards in back"? More than once. Which leads me to the Royal Oak Post Office. I love this Post Office. I have always got along with every clerk there. Except one but she hated everyone. They have become a part of my daily routine as I sell quite a bit online. Been living in a new construction townhome community and haven't received mail in over a month! They will not come out and change the master locks on the community boxes. They leave medical supplies in the snow! We have a bin clearly marked for deliveries which they leave NEXT TO the bin. Cosmetic supplies got muddy and I had to vacuum! Talking on Bluetooth at my front door scares me! Suddenly it sounds like people are trying to break in. No wonder we often get the neighbor's mail. They're not paying attention! I tried to chase him/ her down without a coat and they couldn't hear me. If your music is that loud, it's dangerous for everyone. I got in my car and drove an important piece of mail to the neighbor. For almost ten years, the delivery service has been very poor on my route. I called some years ago and got nowhere. Subs serve the route half the time and they are working overtime and are not familiar with the route and mail is misdelivered. No one cares! Had a quick and painless visit here last week. I wasn't too complicated with my needs, just had to pick up some stamps, but the clerks were all incredibly helpful and pleasant for this simple transaction. The line was minimal on a Friday afternoon, parking in the lot next door was ample (but metered, so bring your change), and there were several vending machines in the lobby for a self-serve option. Being a bit of a migrant worker this past year has given me the opportunity to spend a lot of time dealing with the post office (forwarding, holding, moving, etc.). This was slightly problematic due to my yen for priority mail-delivered items, from your ebays, your Overstock.coms, Revolve Clothings and the like. The RO branch has consistently "been there" for me. Our postal carrier understood my wacky hold mail/deliver mail requests and even checked up on us when he'd see us around to be sure that mail should or shouldn't be coming in. If I ever had to pick up a package, the carriers at the branch were polite and very helpful with any issues; e.g., I received a third delivery notice with a threat of returning the item back to the sender, which was duly was scoffed at by the carrier...and my certified letter magically appeared. Another tip, too - the RO Automated Postal Center (APC) totally rocks and is a major time-saver. I highly recommend apprising oneself of it - you can buy stamps and mail Priority and Express packages. Good for when I was on a house-cleaning ebay-auctioning jag. Good for holidays when everyone's standing in line waiting to send off fruitcake. read more

I read that the reason why Royal Oak has such a large building was due to the massive volume of mail (containing money) that was sent to Father Coughlin of the Shrine Church. He was a rabid anti-semite and his broadcasts were filled with vitriol against Jewish people. I have a slight connection to that shooting at the post office. I worked for an ad agency and was making a pick up for artwork at a graphics company a few minutes away from the post office. When I got back to the office, my boss was concerned that I was O.K. During my next job, I was a few days into a technical recruiting job as the receptionist. The Feds showed up and wanted the shooter's employment records! How is it possible that I have a confirmation to pick up my package and have a tracking number and I go to the royal oak post office and they tell me we do not know where your package is. Or where it's at. But here a supervisors number to call, but he doesn't pick up and the voicemail is always full and you can't leave a message. Since I have my own online business, I visit this post office on a VERY regular basis! On the plus side: -Anything you ship out of this location is going to arrive at its destination quickly. It's a major hub for Metro Detroit, and I regularly have shipments arrive in Texas within two days, and even to Germany within seven. -Parking is easy-peasy across the street...just don't try to out-run the meter-readers (they are LETHAL in that lot)!!!. -They have TWO self-service stations in this location! Don't wait in line! Do it yourself!!! On the negative side: -Look TWICE before crossing the street from the metered lot to the post office, drivers tend to ignore the whole crosswalk-yield-to-pedestrians thing. -There are a LOT of petitioners, crazy radical political types, and aggressive panhandlers that are often outside (again, maybe I notice this more because I'm there at least 3-4 days/wk). I've never felt in danger or anything, but I HATE being yelled at by people when all I want to do is ship my packages! On the MEH side: -If you do stand in line, you will definitely get VERY different service depending on which clerk you get. Some of them are absolutely wonderful and I PRAY I get them when it's my turn! Others are downright nasty (I had one yell at me and accuse me of fraud regarding international shipping when I WAS in the right, but it was absolutely humiliating). I had a manager tell me to go call the local police if I had concerns about a missing package (again NO). I know these clerks deal with horrible jerks on a daily basis, probably in higher numbers than other surrounding post offices, and I try to remember that every time I get a nasty attitude from one...but it makes me whimper when I do have to stand in line. Thankfully the GOOD clerks are a genuine pleasure to deal with and make it worth it! read more

I never thought I would be reviewing a post office but here we go: Since we moved to Royal Oak we had endless issues with our mail carrier. While we are not high maintenance people, we do believe it is not much to ask that our mail and magazines are not ripped and crinkled when delivered into the door mail slot. After 2 or 3 complaints to customer service the issues pretty much cleared up. Unfortunately, an extremely important item was destroyed about a month after our last complaint. After many phone conversations, I eventually gave up and waited in line at the actual post office. The postmaster was kind, professional, understanding and most of all proactive at resolving this issue. If you are having any mail issues in Royal Oak, I personally recommend skipping the fluff and talk directly with the postmaster. read more

Don't bother trying to call to ask them any questions, you'll never get a hold of anyone except someone to put you on hold - if you're lucky. This place is pretty good for a post office. They are fairly quick, with multiple registers. Plenty of available supplies and they will even lend you a pen if ya need it (that is a rare find at post offices). Parking is annoying with all the construction going on but it is still relatively easy to access the building. Watch out when it comes to closing time cause Frank gets cranky if you are the one that sneaks in at 7:01pm. read more

My sister mailed a letter from Traverse City to Royal Oak on Sept 16, 2021, today it Oct 4, 2021 and it still hasn't arrived. So last week she sent a certified letter and just received a notification that there was no answer and couldn't deliver it. I am sitting 10 feet from my front door and no one knocked or left a note. I have been going to this post office my entire life. Not as often as I used to now that I'm in Chicago obviously, but I still go drop things off with my mom when I'm home. Now, just a tip in case you weren't aware: The term "Going Postal" was coined after a big & scary shooting at this very post office. I was actually there as a kid with my mom about an hour before it happened. Yikes! Moving on. I always get friendly service here, which is such a nice thing because the post offices in Chicago are TERRIBLE, and bring shame on the postal system. But there's a reason for that. A majority of staff has been there since I was a kid. In fact, last time I was home I got to see Miss Rovetta, one of the nicest ladies ever. As a little kid, I would sit on the counter at her station while she chatted happily away with my mom, and she would even give me suckers. Now as an adult, it is wonderful to see that she's still there, nice as ever. We don't have that in Chicago. Not only are a majority of postal workers not nice, but they are not good at their jobs. It's so nice to see that there exists a post office with people who genuinely enjoy their job and are friendly to customers. Wish I could say the same about Chicago post offices. Le Sigh. read more

I got to the post office today within minutes after they closed, the doors were locked but Shanika came out and helped me! My package had an issue with delivery and was returned to the office but it was a gift and I needed it for tomorrow! Shanika was very kind and went through the back and found it for me! For postal services: 3.5 stars The Royal Oak branch is probably the best alternative in the area (short of Clawson, according to Yelp). The large building keeps hours friendly for wage slaves. A very large counter and service area accommodate the longest lines before Christmas and Mother's Day, a necessity given the crush of people trudging in with their parcels. Two automated kiosks allow you to print out shipping and customs labels with a minimum of fuss, then hop into the line. This automated service needs to be in all post offices, or at least some of the subsidiary branches in the suburbs, as it's painless and time-saving. My experience with the clerks has been fairly positive, but I greet them with a smile and try to have all my ducks in a row. They process without fuss. On the right day, you'll even get a joke from one of them. For phone/passport services: 0 stars. (1 star) Royal Oak is the main passport acceptance facility in the area, short of going down to Detroit's passport agency and paying $60 for the expedited privilege. Unfortunately all passports require appointments here, and the State Department and USPS site list a phone number to make said appointment. Fine, I called it, prepared to accommodate the major inconvenience to my 9 to 5 working schedule. No answer. I left a message. No response. I called again a few days later. No response. I left a message. No reply. Repeat ad nauseum. Royal Oak at least has an answering service, unlike Ferndale, but what's the point other than as a placebo? Oh, and don't show up in person to make an appointment. Per the clerk: "You have to call for that." What if they never answer? "Try again during regular business hours." To heck with that. Parking and location: 2 stars Ample parking is available across the street, though during peak hours and times (especially festivals like Arts, Beats 'n Eats) in Royal Oak, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle for a spot. The parking lot resembles the cratered streets of Mogadishu or Sarajevo, a danger for any low slung car with less than great suspension. Huge, gaping holes are deadly to the undercarriage. I can't understand why it's not repaved! All spots are metered and I highly recommend sharking to see if there's an unexpired meter since so many people plug in coins and have overtime. That said... do NOT leave your vehicle unattended without sufficient time. Send a helper out to refill said meter. Royal Oak's maids are ready at the drop of a minute hand to ticket you, and they aren't going to accept "I was just putting stamps on my letter to Great Aunt Edna!" or "The self-service machine printer attacked me with the fury of a thousand yellow jackets." Love the APC (automated postal centre), hate the fact no one knows how to pick up a phone. read more

Never had any problems with mail. When I was going through problems with a predatory landlord,the RO post office did whatever they could to get my mail to me. Good people. I wish the City of Royal Oak was a helpful as the Post Office was. Needless to say, I will never live in Royal Oak again. read more
