We just tried to eat there, I hear it's fabulous, but when I asked if they had hot tea I was told "no" and so I asked if they could get me some hot water since I have a tea bag the waitress said, "no, they are not going to do that for you." Might I add that the restaurant was empty. We were only the second table occupied and the other already had their food. The waitress and manager were sitting at a table by themselves when we came in. I told her I was going to mention this to Yelp! So she immediately sent the manager out who told me that if they had to boil some water for me they would have to do it for everybody. So we paid for the beer my husband had ordered and left. A little off the beaten path. But once we found it, no complaints. Traveling with a toddler we are always looking for a grown up place that is child friendly. This is it. Loved the menu and the draught beer list. We sat on the patio and enjoyed a great lunch. I recommend the pimento cheese sandwich. It comes on a ciabatta roll which goes amazingly with the slightly spicy pimento cheese. I also enjoyed the Asheville Brewing Perfect Day IPA even though IPAs are not my favorite beer. read more

We walked up and seated ourselves on the open patio, which is dog-friendly. I decided to try a couple things I read several reviews about -- the Steinbeck Burger, with pimiento cheese, bacon, and jalapenos, and the tater tots. The burger was excellent -- the pimiento cheese gave it a great flavor that blended well with the other fixins. The tater tots were good and crispy, and was a nice little blast from the past. Of course I also had to try a couple local craft beers, where there was a wide variety to choose from. Others around my table were happy with quesadillas and wings, but I didn't have enough room left to sample any dishes but my own. Staff were casual, friendly, and attentive. A nice addition to the pubs along Haywood Rd. The place is finally finding it's personality and the food has improved on each of our visits. Pub food done well and a rotating draft selection of handcrafted beer. It's in a small awkward space (a service station in a former life) but they have done a good job with the layout. Getting rid of the overly obnoxious jukebox was a good move. Nice TVs for keeping up with the game but the place is hip enough to ward off the "sportsbar crowd". I like this place. Second time I've been and the food has been good both times. Standard American pub/diner type fare but freshened up a bit. They hit the four star mark for me because their salsa is excellent IMO. I had the falafel gyro which was good but I've certainly had better. We have been here several times. The food and atmosphere are great, and the Universal Fries appetizer is a must. However, three of the past four times we've been there we have had problems with extraordinarily slow service. It's a relaxed atmosphere so it's not a place to go when you're in a rush, but by slow I mean no drink refills throughout meal , and a 30 minute wait from the time you're done to the time you get the check back to sign. The servers are working hard, but my guess is they're just understaffed, which makes an experience that used to be reliably good uncomfortable. read more

With the U.J only being a 5 minute drive from the house you could say I've been here a few times. Great atmosphere and even better food the only reason I'm giving 4 stars is due to the fact that if the place is full it feels rather crammed. Needed a post Spartan Race meal, and UJ was down the road from our AirBnB. First it's imperative to highlight Brandon's service. His recommendations were spot on, and his demeanor made the dining experience truly entertaining. I wish him well on his trip to Spain. The table started with chicken nachos, an appetizer that gave us a wonderful mix of flavors. I went with the trout Reuben, which Brandon said was a popular choice. I've never had a fish Reuben, but man did it hit the spot. My friend Tim went with my second choice, the Gyro. Giant wrap, and Tim was very happy with the choice, which Brandon noted was his favorite. Chuck, Dan, and Jim went the burger route. Bison specifically. Chuck devoured his Steinbeck, while Dan and Jim equally enjoyed their mushroom burgers. Pleasant family atmosphere and outdoor seating makes this West Asheville establishment a must see. I'll be back to Asheville in October, and we will return. Sadly, Brandon will be in Spain. read more

Universal Joint has the best bar food in Asheville! Lunch, Dinner or late night boozing you can never go wrong it seems. The staff is great, along with one of the owners/manager Brady. We went to the universal joint to get some burgers and hang out. I ordered a burger but they gave me a chicken sandwich. After I told the waitress she gave me a burger really quickly that had the bottom of the bun on top. She asked if this was okay and I said it was fine but after I flipped over the burger I realized that there were two bites taken out of the burger and they covered it up by putting a new bun on the top. I told the waitress and she said the other customer told me he didn't eat it. I'm disgusted to think that the waitress and cooks knew that the burger had been partially eaten and they tried to cover it up. read more

I would give this a 2.5 stars if I could. We had driven by the place and it looked like a cool hip building with a patio. Once we got there it wasn't too busy. A handful of tables were open on the patio. There seemed to be about 5 waiters for outside, but somehow our waitress took twice as long to ever come back out to check on us. At first I thought maybe the inside was busy, but nope it was pretty empty. The cheese curds are deserving of a 4/5 stars, but the burger and fries are mediocre at best. After eating I had wish we had just stopped by the Tastee Diner down the street. Once we had finished and were waiting to pay, our waitress came out two times to take the order from the table next to us. Both times I spent the whole time looking dead at her waiting for her to look over, but no luck. This will probably be the first and last time I come here, simply because there is better food in the area. read more

This place has awesome burgers! Some things have been hit or miss for me in the past (medium well burger instead of medium or a fry/tot mix up, but potato potato-they're always willing to fix it.) DO get: any special if it sounds good to you. Its special because it IS! Ive never been disappointed by a spec. My fav is the buttermilk fried chicken, grits and asparagus on Tuesdays. It tastes exactly the way "Gram Gram" would have wanted! DONT get: the veggie or black bean burger. Too squishy. Needs panko! If your vegetarian try the tofu tacos. Im a meat eater and love them. All around a great place I've been going to since they opened. The staff can be hit or miss, can be slow or just plain rude but I've never been completely turned off by that and it didn't happen again (even by the same waitress!) i should admit that i've only eaten three things here: a killer mushroom and swiss black bean burger that was wonderful, the amazing pretzel bites, and my usual- the falafel with fries and a side of chipotle aioli (it's Everything). i've never been disappointed. one day i'll branch out and try some specials, but for now i'm really happy with what i've been getting. staff is always really nice, and the drinks always leave me happily tipsy (or happily trashed on the random nights where four moscow mules seem like a Good Idea). im a native who for some reason didn't start coming here until a few months ago, but im so happy i did. i love this place and will always highly recommend it. read more
