Later evening food options! Which is why we ended up here after a soccer game during a weekend tournament in the area. Food and service was good enough. Nothing particularly spectacular, but beggars can't be choosers when it is late and you want to sit down to eat with 14 people! My chicken fingers were acceptable. The ambiance and service were both pleasurable. I got the Smokehouse Burger without cheddar, jack cheese, a pickle, or crispy onions (consisting of BBQ sauce, brisket, and my personal addition of feta) on a GF bun with tots. The burger itself was delicious with the other flavors and the bun was warm, but I would have liked it a little more toasted. The tots were nicely crispy and well-salted. However, there were enough of them for two or three people. Overall, though, not a half bad experience. read more

Super simple menu with good choices. I like somewhere that offers smaller portions so I loved their more "snack" portions such as the smash burger! We had great service on a Friday night and will be back for the patio when it isn't drizzling. read more

Friends in west Ashe love Universal Joint and we were hoping too as well. The patio looked appealing but it was buggy the afternoon we went so decided to eat indoors. They have a nice variety of beers on tap and a decent menu. Friends raved about the burgers so I followed their lead. Unfortunately, my med/med-well came out very well done and rock hard. We were there to socialize and share tips before house and dog sitting so I didn't bother to send it back. Server also didn't bother to refill my tea. Five stars for the food. Three stars for the service. Three stars for the cleanliness of the restaurant. We ordered burgers, fries, and tator tots. The food was all excellent (Steinbeck burger is beyond words). The service was friendly, but slow. The place could use a scrub IMHO. Parking is a nightmare m, but that's not their fault. read more

Eh. This joint is a mixed bag. My burger was decent but overall the food was so so. The oil they were frying in was fishy and old. The chips were stale. The fries are not so good. The wait staff were friendly and working hard. It felt a bit like a college bar. I could see neighbors stopping by for a beer but it isn't worth going just for the food. read more

Visited Asheville for a long weekend with the family. Looking through Yelp for a good place to eat. Came across the Universal Joint. Small bar with plenty of tables inside and out. Place was kid friendly also. The menu is very simple. We ordered Fish& chips and Burgers. Everything was excellent. The service was fantastic and super friendly. Terrible food. Black bean burger was flavorless and served cold. The fries were also cold and tasted like they'd been sitting out for quite a while. Boyfriend's chips were completely stale. I would love to give a 5 star but I did indeed have mold on my lemons:/ besides that everything was SPECTACULAR!! I drove 2 hours here today from Tennessee just to see one of my best good pals!! Today we came across this gem and I will indeed admit besides the lemons the Bison Burger, Buffalo Wings and Nachos were top notch! Universal Joint in in West Asheville for lunch today. Usually, I get something lighter like the fish tacos, but today, I tried the California Burger and did not regret it one bit. I appreciate a good smash burger, but I gotta say, a nice well-seasoned and well-cooked thick patty burger really does hit the spot sometimes! Nice ripe avocados, grilled onions, bacon, monterey jack cheese and a spicy sweet sauce with just enough kick. All on a soft brioche/egg bun. The fries were fresh and crisp and service was friendly, prompt and warm! My husband said he couldn't stop thinking about that burger Every time we've been there, the bartender has been very accommodating and on top of things. This is a fun burger and beer place with outdoor seating in west Asheville. We came here with the kids because I heard that they had chalk and drawing space for the kids. They do, although it's not exactly close to most of the outdoor seating. My daughter did enjoy drawing for a bit. They offer a bunch of local beers. I tried a Sierra Nevada sour beer, and it wasn't too sweet, which was nice. My husband had an IPA, which he thought was okay. We started with the queso and dip and edamame to start. They came out quickly, which was a relief since the kids were hangry. For my main, I had the smoked trout reuben. it was pretty good. Smoked trout tends towards dryness, and the sandwich could have used more cheese or dressing to help with that. But the flavors worked well. The bread could have been toasted a little longer. My husband had a basic burger. The kids ordered off the kids menu, and they were pleased. They have a pay jukebox, and my husband put in $10 of credits, only to find out that there are no outdoor speakers. Oops. There isn't a ton of parking nearby other than the pay lots. read more

We were in the mood for sandwiches, burgers & beers. This place met that easily & heartily. Great vibe spot in the heart of West Asheville's Haywood Rd food & drink corridor. Truly great service - knowledgeable on the craft beer selection. Our food was really good & fresh. And always nice when places are thoughtful about our dogs. This place is awesome!! We came after a long day of travel and were starving. A really great waitress in a long green kimono type shirt took care of us and she was incredible! Super hard working! She was the only waitress and dominated! There was also a great host that was in a reddish hoodie on that was also super friendly and helpful!! They made for a great team and delivered fast and excellent service! Food was awesome! Yummy Cuban and fish tacos! They even brought my dog ice cold water!! read more

We decided to find somewhere with a good burger. We found This place which had Bison Burgers. My husband and I both ordered Bison Burger I ordered mine the old school way with just cheese, Mayo, onion and pickle. My husband ordered his the breakfast way with cheese, bacon and fried egg with fries. Both were good burgers. He drank a local craft beer from Hi-Wire Brewery local to the area and I drank a Tart Cherry Cider. It was late at night and I didn't get to take many pictures at this restaurant. The restaurant was still pretty busy considering how late we chose to eat. Very casual atmosphere. UJ was a great local find just around the corner from our AirBNB. We saw a long line outside the night we arrived in town, and knew it was a must-try before we left. We got in for dinner on a Sunday evening fairly quickly, though it took awhile for us to order drinks and food at first. We ordered the UJ Burger and the Universal Fries, both of which were very good! I also ordered a Moscow Mule and it was so well-made with just the right proportions of lime, ginger beer, and vodka. Local Asheville dive on Haywood rd., it's a comfortable place to get a meal. They have a wide variety of semi-bar food. Dining is indoors or outside under the trees. Ate outside and had one of their special burgers with a cold beer. Can't beat the place for a quick relaxing meal. Was hard to see menu and really could not see food well. See dark pics. Service was ok. It's these reasons that it's a 3. Nice little chain (other cities) that I've been coming to for a few years. Easy location- parking at old bank or on street. They are pretty pricey for what they are but the food is decent pub food and the service is nice. The music can be a bit loud and the light dim but I appreciate the outdoor patio when it's warm. They have good veggie options. I like the salad and veggie burger made in house. Pretty decent alcohol prices compared to the area so I cannot complain about that. read more

I had the patty melt which was the special. Delicious, but after sharing a basket of fried okra with my husband, I could only eat half. He had a salad with smoked trout. Everything was good. I tried 2 of their beers in tap and they were good too. The server was very friendly and pleasant. We sat on the patio and would definitely return. read more

That was the best black bean burger I have had in my life. If the chef could give me their recipe, I would greatly appreciate it. The tots were great; sadly I ordered the fries, which were delicious, but needed salt. The service was good, with multiple servers checking in on my party throughout our meal. Entering the building was a bit confusing, but we figured it out in the end. The building feels like an old-style American restaurant, and with some slow country playing in the background, it was a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere to eat in. Although a bit pricey, I would come back for the service alone! But seriously: if you're a vegetarian craving a bit of traditional American fare, I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

I highly recommend this place. Great atmosphere, servers are friendly and knowledgeable. A menu of local beer and wine. And evidently the buffalo comes from a farm not far away. I was told they source most of the menu locally. It's unique and has a very eclectic menu. This isn't normal bar fare, but they offer that as well. Check it out. read more

I've seen a lot of reviews talking smack on the bar food aspect of the restaurant but if you go in to the meal, not expecting filet mignon, I think you'll be pleased. The fries were fantastic. The burger was amazing. The buffalo chicken wrap was perfect and again the service more than made up for any kind of concern we would've had for the food. Highly recommend for people visiting Asheville. Especially those traveling as a family.

A lot of dirt and grime on the ground. The windows in the front are open and the smoke from the people smoking was coming inside. I got the trash panda and it was quite sweet but I really I liked the taste.
