A wonderful hidden gem in Greenville. If you've never been I recommend the egg rolls. The chutney that comes with it is amazing!

Best burgers around. This is where I take everyone from out of town. Service is good. Decent beer selection. Tots are great. Only suggestion would be to add sweet potato fries (or tots!) and let me add a fried egg to my burger. Outdoor seating is great. This is more of a neighborhood bar and has a lot of regulars. When I opened the door I noticed dog hair all over the entrance mat. UGH! Dogs are allowed outside only in the outside seating area. We sat inside at a table instead of the bar and the table appeared to be clean except for numerous crumbs left on the table. We had to wait to be served and I didn't see a server, so I wondered it we needed to order at the bar. Brad came in from the back patio and immediately waited on our table. I noticed he was serving the rear patio, inside, and front outside seating and he did a great job. He kept checking on us (and everyone else) to be sure everyone was okay. Kudos to Brad for the great service!!! When his shift was over he was replaced by another server (name omitted). Sorry, but I prefer not to be served food by someone with dreadlocks and a nose ring. It's a hygienic thing with me. Happy Hour is everyday and drinks are a great price! I have eaten here in the past and the food is just okay, but a little pricey. Happy hour chicken nachos are $5 which is half of the regular price, but rather dry. Parking is very limited unless you want to park across the street and cross Stone Ave. Try UJ if you haven't done so and form your own opinion. read more

Not sure why not 5 stars for UJoint - as we call it. I wonder if anybody calls it "Universal J"? No matter. The parking is a bit challenged - now apparently to occur behind the salon across the street with someone trying to charge $5 for the space behind the insurance office. Also, the service can occasionally be a tiny bit challenged when it gets busy. Those caveats out of the way, UJoint really delivers as a great local watering hole. The menu is inventive, the food is fresh and delicious and the drink options get the job done quite well. The service is usually fine, handled by a friendly young staff. I love several of the burgers - bunless of course. My favorite is the Steinbeck with bacon and excellent pimento cheese. They have you covered for sides and I LOVE their fresh, simple field green salad with a luscious, tangy lemon dressing and cheese - so good. Properly cooked crunchy/steamy tater tots are also on offer if splurging on the carbs. The other item I have to comment on is their wings. From what I remember, they have real smoked wings one day in the week. THOSE are the bomb and arguably some of the best in town. However, their regular wings are also outstanding, particularly the lemon pepper version. I think my favorite lemon pepper wings evah. It's a hip happening place with one of the nicer outdoor seating areas in town - right on the street but with a short wall and plantings that break the noise, etc up. You will often find dogs and their owners out there and makes for a pleasant place to hang. Not the biggest selection of drafts and wine in town but they keep things mixed up and always seem to make great choices for what is on offer. When the weather is nice, the big doors open up and the whole place shares the vibe. UJ is a great casual food/drink option that our family has enjoyed regularly since moving to Greenville. read more

Really people? 1 and 2 star reviews because of parking? You even admitted the experience was a good one. Is a 20 yard walk really that much of a burden? Lazy bums. UJ is an awesome little neighborhood hangout with great burgers and bar food with an awesome selection of rotating craft beers. I suppose this is not the kind of place you come to with your co-workers for lunch when faring well to one of them?! It was the leaving co-worker's choice, so I'll blame them (ha!). I think I just don't go to places like these often enough to get familiar and like them too much. I remember ordering wings and they were alright, but nothing too memorable. Service was ok; not horrible but also not bend-over-backwards. I think what got me were the chairs and small table. I just felt uncomfortable sitting in the chair like I was constantly on edge waiting to fall on the table. The small table made it feel a bit crunchy with a total of 5 people. I think I would have to come back at nighttime to see what the atmosphere's like. Also, regarding the parking, why not skip driving yourself and just let Lyft or Uber take you there so you don't have to worry about parking at all. You're welcome! read more

this place is terrible. I ordered tacos with a side of sour cream and the waitress acted like I was stupid saying "um yeah it comes with sour cream".. oh my bad. so the food comes and I get served french fries, salsa, and a bland taco. 8 minutes later she finally comes back asking if everything is okay -- I haven't touched my food. at this point I ask her "do you normally serve fries with tacos?" she says "no, did you want chips?" I say "that's what the menu says".... at this point i'm ready to go and send my food back. she literally serves me stale chips and gives me salsa/sour cream uncovered in a cup. I asked her for a box and she puts the fires chips and tacos with the uncovered condiments in the box. when I get home, shit is everywhere. she never even offered to take my food off the bill even though she fucked up. what a trash place. Had a really good experience here! Had the steinback burger and have been craving it ever since. The pimento cheese was delicious. The service was friendly and we really enjoyed the outdoor space which allowed us to have our dog there with us! Parking was easy and it wasn't crowded for Saturday dinner. read more

Went in for the first time this week. Small restaurant/bar with nice local neighborhood vibe. Heated patio along with dining and bar seating. Typical bar food menu, but not average in flavor. I asked our server for his top choices, and he gave us options from each category. The blackened fish tacos were cooked perfectly, topped with aioli sauce and a very fresh salsa on the side. We also ordered a shrimp po boy. Very fresh shrimp and nice blend of ingredients. A Blue Point toasted Lager capped it off perfectly! Prompt, friendly service, good food and drafts. We have driven by this place a few times and finally decided to stop and check it out today. Parking is across the street behind another business. Where would you park if the other business was open? The restaurant itself had a nice setup and cool decor. Our server was pretty nice but we could tell when we got the food that whoever made it, didn't really want to be there today. We got the turkey burger "California" which was dry and comparable to meatloaf texturally. There was a quarter of an avocado just on top (which we cut to spread out) and dry burnt bacon sloppily strewn about. The flavor was not there. We also got the brisket Philly cheesesteak that was not flavorful or delicious at all. It was edible and we were starving so we almost finished both. The fries and tots were the best things we had but obviously the tots were frozen. Also, our server was nice but asking if everything is "amazing" really makes for more room for comparison to something that actually is amazing. read more

My girlfriend and I moved to the North Main area of Greenville from the San Francisco Bay Area about 6 months ago - so we know good food good service and a cool place when we see it. Greenville has lots of great places to eat and drink but Universal Joint is the one place we go to the most. We live nearby and have the pleasure of walking down to UJ anytime we want. We have found the staff - Andrew Rob Tara Laurie et al - to be friendly welcoming and attentive. As others have mentioned, the brisket in any shape or form is fantastic but so are the Tilapia Tacos and Arugula Salad. UJ is our "Cheers". A great place for an afternoon meeting! I love sitting at the bar and having an Angry Orchard cider! Their chicken and arugula salad is great for a light lunch and if you want something heavier, go for the tacos or burger. I was so excited to try this out but pretty let down. The obvious negatives first: 1. NO PARKING 2. It's pretty much open-air so it's gonna be hot in July I knew these things and dressed appropriately and gave myself adequate time to find a parking spot and hike to the Universal Joint. The menu has the usual bar fare with some interesting items. But the real negative here is the poor service. Terrible. Our waiter didn't come to the table at all for about 10 minutes, then took another 10 minutes to bring out our drinks and take our orders. He didn't write anything down and he seemed kinda out of it (or maybe just a stoner) so my friend and I took bets on which order was going to be wrong. It turns out both of our orders were wrong. Oh well--her burger was OK and my grilled buffalo chicken sandwich (minus the blue cheese that was supposed to come on it ???) was pretty good. I think this place will do OK as a watering hole for the surrounding neighborhood but it's not worth the hassle to find parking for me to return for the poor service and so-so food. read more

Universal Joint is a great neighborhood bar that has great inside and outdoor seating. They have a great beer selection including Stone IPA always on tap. My favorite thing on the menu is the brisket nachos. I am not a big brisket eater but the combo of the meat, their special queso, beans, and jalapeños is mouth watering good. I go almost once a week just for these bad boys! A must try for EVERYONE! read more

Came here last night fort the first time with friends. We try to hit a new place once a month for getting together. I must say this is on the keeper list. The atmosphere was great. The staff awesome, the food incredible for pub food. It was an old auto garage that was transformed. . Still has the roll up doors and canopy for the pumps. Inside you sit in the old work area, outside tables in front and a back patio as well. Not over done with the deco to take away from the old brick walls. You have to check this place out. Not a lot of parking, the only down fall. You have to park in the adjacent lot. Great place to meet friends. Also noticed the are pet friendly. My fiancé and I ate here on Sunday. The food made him sick. He called them to let them know and they apologized and said they would refund any charges. After waiting a week and a follow up phone call,they only refunded $20 for a $61 bill. That doesn't even cover his meal and he was told that would refund all charges. If they would have just fixed this as they said, I would have had no problems. I'm not sure what the run around is about. Bad customer service and clearly bad food too. read more

Cannot tell you anything good about this place other than no customer service at all. We Went in and sat at table with my wife and son. Not all tables were full. We sat for 5 minutes, 3 waiters walked by no one came to the table. Finally someone came to the next table bringing food. We asked was he our waiter, no I am not a waiter, but I let them know. 5 more minutes went by and finally a person came out and put down 3 menus and left saying he had to cover the bar. I used to love this place ! I'm recently years it has faded from a 4 Star to a 1 star in my opinion. When they fired the trivia guy for being good at trivia thought it was strange... but the last three times I've been there, the service has been increasingly bad. Today when I sat down at the bar I waited for nearly 10 minutes at the bar waiting to get a drink or water or anything. I received no service whatsoever. I was too hungry to wait. This is a pretty cool little spot! The interior has a lot of character, made to look like the inside of a garage with old signs and such. I came fairly late one evening, and took a seat at the bar. The food was pretty good, and they have some nice beers on tap. The woman behind the bar was lovely. And, I appreciate they have their own small parking lot. read more

Food was good, couple issues though. I had the Texas bowl along with 2 of my relatives. None of us got salsa, none of us got sour cream. Me and my father in law ordered appetizers. I have been to Universal Joint several times. I go with friends after work or hanging out with my mom on the weekends! They have a great selection of beers. I have had the BBQ brisket nachos twice now and it pairs perfect with a nice cold beer. The brisket is a great combination with the queso, cilantro-corn and red onion. I have also had the old 1-2 and the blackened tilapia tacos. Such great variety and good food, YUM! read more

I've NEVER had a bad experience here. Folks, it's a BAR that serves food not a 5 star restaurant. And that being said, the food is great and better than typical bar fare. It's meant to be a casual dining spot (I think so anyway, appears that way) not a high dollar, black tie waiter spot. I get good service everytime. If I need something, I'll ask!! And these reviews about parking WTH?? What do you want them to do ?? The businesses across the street offer their parking lots (except the jerk at State Farm). Universal Joint is a great spot to grab lunch and/or a few drinks and enjoy an outdoor atmosphere on the edge of downtown in the North Main area. Went for lunch today with two others and found a spot inside due to it being 94 degrees today. Typically they'll have the garage doors open which we wouldn't have minded but no complaints here, we could have sat outside. Server greeted us relatively quickly and got our drink orders in which was nice, draft beer selection isn't stellar but they always have a few rotating seasonal beers along with some standard favorites. We started out with an order of the hummus, which comes in an interesting presentation with sliced cucumbers, onion and tomatoes (interesting but good all the same). I ordered the blackened fish tacos which are always great and unknowingly ordered the U-fries per the servers suggestion. They were pretty great, but definitely a large meal so definitely will opt for regular fries next time. One person I was with ordered the chicken arugala salad which I must say looked pretty uninteresting and they agreed it was average at best. The other person I was with ordered the southwest chicken quesadilla which is a big meal as we brought back half of it and look forward to the leftovers. Overall the service and food are good, atmosphere is great and this should be on your list of places to check out in Greenville if you haven't yet. read more
