Our guide 'Johnny Three-Knives' was a slick, witty, and joke-filled gangster, along with his sidekick/driver 'Winky'. Both of these guys had us laughing the entire time! Johnny did a superb job of staying in character as a gangster from the 1920s (complete with wardrobe and accent!) and taught us about all the big-shots like Capone, Dillinger, and Weiss. I have been a resident of Chicago for 5 years now and it was a fun-filled way to learn about some of the biggest 'n baddest gangsters around. In addition, I learned even more about the city's layout and drove through parts I had never been before, which led me to places I have been to all the time! A great way to navigate the streets without the CTA. They also fill-in some of the ride with music from the era, which added to the fun and feel of the overall tour. To add to the fun, they raffled off some prizes! I won the grand prize, which is a book titled "Untouchable Chicago: a Ride through Prohibition". I was so excited to win! They also raffled off a shot glass and a cool mug. The total time was about 90min (give or take with traffic). Ours happened to be taking place during the Michigan Ave Lighting Parade, which caused quite a bit of traffic, but our hosts did a great job of keeping us entertained and drawn-in to the history lessons. Overall, I had a downright good time. Tours a meant to be informative and fun, so definitely go into it ready to have some laughter and learn some cool facts about our city's historic icons. Really great tour guides and I learned a lot, not just about gangsters in Chicago, but about the city itself - felt like two tours in one because we went all over the city! Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is it's spending two hours in a limo bus - they're very clear about that on the website, but it's still a long time to just ride around in a bus. We were also in the very back, so some of the Chicago potholes really sent us flying (which, honestly, was also kinda fun - just bear it in mind if you have a bad back!). Overall, a really great time and kudos to the tour guides who have to deal with most of the sites they're talking about having been torn down/replaced - they really kept it fun and brought history to life in spite of that. I'm honestly surprised by all of the positive reviews here. We went last Saturday (11/02) 1pm tour. There was very little in the way of history and information related to the gang activity of the 20's and 30's in Chicago. The tour guide was having a hard time telling a cohesive story - rambling on and on about unrelated architecture. He also had to keep stopping his story to tell the driver when and where to go next. It was just overall poorly put together. I am comparing this to the St. Paul mobster tour I was on a few years ago which was incredibly well run and had a great tour guide. Disappointing here given Chicago is so much bigger. read more

Awesome tour!! I went by myself because my husband was on business and it was a great way to see the city. I was staying in downtown so I liked that I was able to walk to the meet up location. The bus toured north, south, east, and west side of Chicago so I enjoyed checking out the city sights. The tour guides were GREAT! Funny & stayed in character. The bus was comfortable (I was happy I got the front seat). My mom recommended this tour because she's a crime history buff. I'm part sicilian so it was funny that the guides made a bunch of sicilian jokes. The guides talked about other history as well and were informative so that was an added bonus. I love the history of Chicago, and particularly, have always been fascinated with Mafia history. It's amazing how different Chicago was back in the early part of the Century, and how much of the US History regarding underground crime was centered within this city. I came across this tour a couple years back, and thought it would be a great way to visit the areas of interest in one fell swoop. Yes, this tour is done on an old school bus, and the tour guides dress up in "mobster" attire, but it falls a bit short on actual history and factual story telling, and relies more on comedy and "acting". I found that from what I already know by reading memoirs and non-fiction books surrounding the facts of Chicago mafia history, like many other reviewers on Yelp, feel that this tour is more geared for the tourist and not the Chicago History enthusiast. Although you get to go to many of the sites, I felt that the time and information shared at each site was only a brief snippet into the information that I was looking to attain from the tour. We literally drove past the Valentine's Day Massacre site at 30 MPH, not even stopping for a brief second, and it was explained to our tour companions (definitely tourists) within a one minute breath. That site happens to be one of the most historic and history changing areas ever in the span of mobster murders. To explain it within one breath didn't do it any justice and give it the respect that it rightfully deserves. Not to mention that, on my tour, they had handouts that they had given to everyone, which briefly summarized most of the information that was on the tour. Now I'm not saying that it was incorrect to do so (as there is so much information to remember), but don't most people go on a tour because they want to learn from their tour guide, and not read about it on a piece of paper?! All in all, if you're someone who wants to really know the ins and outs about what Chicago Gangland used to be like in Chicago and know about the entire history surrounding the Mafia in our town, I would suggest not attempting to gain your knowledge from this tour. Instead, save yourself the time and your pocketbook, and read "Mr. Capone" by Robert Schoenberg. It is a fascinating and well written book, which also includes historic pictures and timelines / Mafia "family" trees so that you can really grasp the history surrounding this era. read more

For the price ($30pp) it was no great shakes. I'm fascinated by this period of history and while I found it to be at least somewhat informative, it really was super, SUPER cheesy and the majority of locations they take you to don't exist anymore ("and where this parking lot is now..."). I did expect a certain amount of cheesiness, but it was almost patronizingly theatrical and silly. It would have gotten 4 stars if the cost was more like $10 or $15. read more

1. DO NOT GO ON A HOT DAY. The refurbished school bus they use allegedly has air conditioning, but it does not work well. Dripping with sweat after a tour on a humid day in the high 80s. 2. This tour is as much about the show/routine as it is about seeing actual sights. If you are expecting a 100% educational tour, you will be disappointed. Having been on the Sopranos tour in NY where we got out numerous times to 'experience' the ambiance of the show including the diner from the last episode, no such luck with the Untouchables tour. The guides were dressed in the usual gangster clothes and were very informative about Capone's era. They were actually quite good and presented a lot of history and stories. But that's where it basically ended. My biggest complaint was that we didn't get out once to 'touch' and 'feel' the experience. We stopped in front of the Biograph Theater where Dillenger was shot. We were literally parked in front of it for 10 seconds, then we took off. The thing I most looked forward to was getting out at the site of the St. Valentines Day massacre. We drove by it and actually yielded, not even stopped in front of it. Frankly, I don't even remember what it looks like. I wanted to get out and walk it, touch it, imagine what it was like. Instead it was a 1 hour and 45 minute bus tour with jokes, talking, sound effects but no real substance. I would not recommend this unless you're bored and have an extra $30 to spend. In hindsight I would have spent the $30 on an informative DVD instead. read more

We have lived in Chicago for 10 years and this was the first time we have taken this tour. Our daughter was in town and she wanted to do this and we said why not...and we were not disappointed. After reading some of the other reviews (which I only saw after taking the tour) I have to say... seems like folks are a bit hard on these guys. I did read a lot of suggestions people had made in past reviews and it seems like the guys made changes... not stopping for the raffle, comfy seats on the bus, offering different tour times both early and late, a flier depicting who they were talking about. And with all the other comments that this tour is cheesy and not full of history, well, I didn't get the memo that it was supposed to be something other than what it is - a fun touristy trip through Chicago about gangsters and prohibition. Now, this was my first introduction to all this, I mean, I haven't even seen "The Untouchables," and I thought it was enjoyable. Since I'm not really familiar, I can't say how accurate or inaccurate it all is, but if I do ever want to know, I'll do some research. Yeah, there's lots of cheese, but I enjoy that and it was a welcome break to the other crap people had been suggesting or telling us about Chicago. I actually had fun. Yes, there are cheesy sound effects and cheesy accents but I did see parts of town I wouldn't have seen otherwise and it all kept the Brit entertained and fascinated for a few hours. I think the tour is a great idea and done in a manner to keep you entertained. It's not promoted as a walking tour, and come to think of it, just how friggin' long would it be if they did stop the bus and let you out to have a look around as many reviewers complained. Geez, I could only imagine how that would go over, "Oh, great, we lost someones wife to Harpo studios while her husband's gone across the street for some wings. Can't leave 'til their back on the bus." The tour wasn't full of those of an age who are more likely to remember prohibition, but was mixed with all ages. It was a lot like Chicago, full of white people. I thought the raffle was a nice touch and for anyone who's going to complain about getting a free gift, I say, stuff it. They don't have to give anything away. I also think that the price is reasonable, as this was a lot better than the city hop on hop off bus and that thing is practically thieving directly from your wallet with their price in comparison to what you actually get. You know, Chicago doesn't lend much information to all the gangster goings on of the 20's and 30's. It seems like it's a time they'd rather pretend never existed, and while I could almost see why, the reality is that it was a major part of the citys' history. As a Chicago native, bored with the everyday routine of the city, I was easily talked into going on this overpriced, but moderately fun, tour with a couple of visiting friends. The initial kitschy speech and antics had us laughing and smiling, but after several minutes the charm had worn off completely. Perhaps the main redeeming quality of this tour is that it covers a lot of Chicago and provides a unique historical look at the city. Another mistake we made was taking the tour in the evening. Unfortunately, many of the landmarks were difficult or impossible to see in the dark. I would recommend the Untouchable Tour to any tourist who wants something different out of their time in Chicago and has an interest in mobster history. Otherwise, stick to a tour in what Chicago currently does best, food, beer, or architecture. read more

I really wish they had options for other language speakers. I've traveled a lot in Latin America and one thing that's consistent is when I tell people I'm from Chicago, they immediately connect gangsters to our city, so there's interest to go on the your and hear about that era. I took my family from Ecuador last night and they couldn't understand anything and it was too rude of me to be talking over the awesome presenter to explain every amazing fact. Maybe pamphlets in Spanish explaining some major facts would be helpful. Being a teacher of Spanish, I'd be glad to help. read more

This was an outstanding tour. You see many things, and hear many, many very detailed stories. Some report the humor is corny, but I enjoyed the laughs, the songs, the puns, and the entertainment. Have been on this tour twice now. Both times was with tourist friends/family in town. Amazing that they can literally do the exact same show everytime. It was pretty awesome to tour around Chicago and hear about all of the gangster-ness that Chicago's past entails. I think for the price of this tour, it is not worth it. Most of the sites are no longer there, which is not the fault of the tour guides. However, most of the trip is spent parked while they tell stories. The bus definitely needs some air conditioning and a renovation as it sounded like the back wheel axles were going to come through the floor. The guides were super fun and informative, but it was cheesy and I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

Tour was slightly misogynistic, and customers should not have a gun pointed in their faces without a proper warning that it is a fake weapon. The script reduced women to shoe-shopping cheaters who didn't deserve the right to vote. Otherwise the tour was great and the driver and the guide were awesome, I would say just update the script so it isn't sexist and offensive to female customers! read more

Suuuuper cheesy. It was my idea to try out this tour, and I felt pretty bad about it when everyone else in my group fell asleep. There were a few tidbits of information, but a lot more anecdotal (read: unverified) stories. Not to mention the fact that almost every location mentioned is no longer there, so it was a lot of looking at the black & white crummy Xerox quality brochure while we drove past parking lots and long-ish stretches of listening to music while driving to and from these "locations."
