Looking for something new and different to do on Black Friday we took the Holiday lights tour this year. We have a tremendous driver, he was a lot of fun and really made the night. The tour goes the Christkindlmarket market at Wrigley and then the zoolights at Lincoln park zoo. I wish we got to see more lights around the city, but I don't know how that would work. It was allot of fun anyway. we got to spend a good amount of time at each stop. In between on the drive our driver told some great stores, some history and sang Christmas carols. A fun thing to do even if your not a tourist but a local like us. Make be a new family tradition. read more

I'm so confused. I'm on the bus but there is no tour guide. What is the point? We are riding around in traffic The tour was 30 min late due to rain and was scheduled to go for 2 hours. That's understandable but are we really going to drive around for two hours with no narrative? We were sold a tour through an organized trip and I feel ripped off. I did not get on this bus with the expectation of a hop on/ hop off experience. We are currently just sitting her at some park. Update: there is a guide on board but she's not scheduled to start until 7. WTF?????? What the heck????? She's saying that we have 13 stops but the hotel where we were picked up was stop 7/13. So.... if we want to get dropped off where we started we need to miss 6 stops or pay for an Uber???? There is a serious miscommunication. Not a good impression. Money back please. My kids are miserable and making everyone is miserable. I've read the response and I disagree with the response I received. The tour was scheduled for 6pm. There was a rain delay until 6:30. I understand. It did not start until after 7pm and the communication was inaccurate and misleading. After that, it was incompetence. The tour guide WAS ON THE BUS. There was no apology or communication. The tour did not start until late and the tour guide sounded like she was pulled on at the last second. When she announced that we'd have to uber it back to the hotel EVERYONE started pushing and complaining that there was a final stop at our hotel because (and had you looked into this before responding to me you would know) our organization had paid the money to charter the bus and return us to our hotel. I highly recommend the Shoreline architectural boat tour. Same info, nice boat ride and a great way to see the city. I do *not* recommend using this company for organized tours. Both our experience on Thursday and the original response to my post show a lack of organization or follow through. You had the chance to look into our situation before giving me a canned response about the rain delay. You obviously did not look into it. read more

For any tourist or anyone doing a stayaction, The Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Company is a fun and an affordable way to the see the city. Their website is very informative regarding each of the tours is offered. You can purchase your tickets on-line or at any of the tour stops. I have been on the Signature Tour which stops at most of the top tour attraction throughout the city. This time, we chose the West Neighborhood Tour. The tour begins at the Millennium Park stop. From the beginning, our guide was very outgoing and very knowledgeable about the city. He pointed out various buildings until we reached our first destination which was Chinatown. You have the option to continue on the tour or explore Chinatown. We have been to Chinatown several times, but it's always fun to walk around the area. The tour bus/trolley will pick you up at the designated spot and time. The next neighborhood on the tour is Little Italy area. Claudette was our tour guide on this portion. She was very pleasant and has a great personality. In this area, this isn't really much to see. It is a great area to stop for a bit to eat. I just believe there is a Papa John's restaurant is this area. What's next Domino's? For real Italian food, this is the area. On the way to the next destination, Greektown, more of the prominent buildings are discussed. I thought it was really interesting until Claudette got on her "Shrine to Oprah" tour. It got old very quickly. For the record, Oprah did not turn the West Loop area, it was already in transition when she moved out there. The next stop was Greektown. Another part of the city where there is not much to do for tourists except for having a great meal. How can you turn down great food? We had a great meal before heading back to the Millennium Park stop. The West Neighborhoods Tour is a great tour to visit three 'hoods. Since I live on the north side, I thought I'd take the North Neighborhood Tour. Actually, the tour guide was knowledgeable about the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Lakeview and then to Wrigleyville. Since I had a three day pass, I took advantage of the City Lights Night Tour the following night. This tour also goes through the Streeterville and Gold Coast areas. We took the 6pm tour. Our guide, Adam, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. For any tourist, if possible, take this tour after dusk when the city lights are on. I would highly recommend the three (3) day tour pass to ensure to see the entire city - most economically. read more

I liked my free popcorn sample and t-shirt. I recommend the West neighborhoods tour. It speeds down the anorexic tunnel like a roller coaster. I tanned taking a couple of buses. I wish they ran later than 5:00 because while the tour guides advertise that they have good restaurants on their route, you'd have to plan your own way back. I'll book online next time. If you wait until the last tour, the Oprah store will be closing by the time to get to that stop. One guide emphasized African-American history as well as architecture. Our West Neighborhood tour guide was an architecture student but he was insightful about city history and what its like to live on the South side. Sit on the left side to avoid the trees. The tour guides announce how many seat vacancies are available on the top. The one day ticket is probably useless since you're likely to have walked the Signature route already. The tour guide didn't mind that I was taking video. We only moved when this group of Chinese people who sat in the back but right behind us were very loud despite being asked to lower their voice. We rode the entire route before getting off at Willis Tower. Saved a couple of dollars and plenty of time in line by buying those tickets in combination. read more

Got the 3 day pass for $35. This was a really great deal as I was in Chicago for 3 days, so I didn't have to see everything in one day if I got tired. The tour guides are never the same in character and I appreciate that. Some are hella funny, some informative, some sing and some just don't give a flying fish. On the Weekends it is hard to get a sit on top but when you do get up top its worth it. During my ride on the bus it started to rain and we were given rain ponchos I thank you kindly for that. They also have nice little deals for when you hop off at certain places. Doing a hop on hop off sightseeing bus in the States? Cue the eye-roll. Being that this was my first time in Chicago (using that as an excuse), my husband excitedly purchased a Groupon deal for the both of us. (By the way, the Groupon deal is good for both day and night tour.) "This is going to be lame. I can't believe I'm being such a tourist," were the thoughts running through my mind as I got seated on the top deck of the bus. Luckily our guide, Daniel, was able to change my mind by the end of the tour. He was funny, energetic, and of course very informative! Originally we were only going to do the Red Tour. But because he was so funny we decided to stick around for the Green Tour as well. And like other Yelpers have said, if you don't like the guide just hop off and wait for the next bus. One thing I really enjoyed about using this company instead of the Chicago Big Bus is that less people use it. When our bus arrived, we were able to hop on and go. The Big Bus line is long. There were multiple times when I saw people not being able to get on the Big Bus because it was full. Being packed like sardines is not how I envision spending my vacation. The only con I can say is that I wish the buses ran later. Both the day and evening tours end fairly early in the evening. So if you're using this more like a hop on hop off, be sure to keep the time in mind. Customer Service: We redeemed our 1-day deal only to realize that 2-day would've been more beneficial since we were using the hop on and off as our main mode of transportation. We spoke to one of the reps before we got on and by the time we got to our next stop, another rep actually came on board and we were able to pay for the difference and upgraded to a 2-day pass. Your advertisement states you run busses every 20 min. I waited over 30 minutes for my first ride of the day. In addition I was told if I was back on the bus by 4:00pm I could catch a ride to get back to my final destination. 2days in a row I waited over an hour and no bus came. On day one I was told by the bus driver that he was on break and a buss would be coming. That never happened. Day 2 at 3:30 a buss dropped off and refuse to pick up passengers. After waiting over an hour for the next bus to come (because the driver said another one was coming) no bus again and we all had to walk. In addition your website has a Bus tracker that does not work! Poor service if you ask me. read more

We always like to do a HOHO when we come to a new city. They are pretty reasonable and you get a feel for the lay of the land. We hopped off at the Willis Tower and then at the Art Institute. At both stops we had to wait about 20-30 minutes for another bus to pick us up. By the Willis Tower there were Adirondack chairs we could sit in but near the Art Institute we had to stand. In other cities I've not waited that long. We experienced 3 different tour guides and each one was very different from the last. One was very loud, but fun. They provide you with lots of tid bits about the city and the buildings and sights. read more

Warning. If you plan to purchase tickets for the holiday lights trolley tour I assure you- you will be very disappointed. The concept sounds great and exciting but your experience will fall very short of that. The first stop is to the Kris Kringle mart. By the time you get off the trolley and try to push your way through the crowds of people you'll realize time is up and you must get back on the bus. You are not allowed to get on another bus! You must stay on your own trolley or lose your ride entirely. This is not a hop on hop off. The second stop is to the Lincoln Park zoo. Once again the time allotment is 45 minutes and you're lucky to see two exhibits before you have to return to the trolley. After 2 days of sight seeing with several tour guides, I can tell you this: CHICAGOANS are proud of their city, their diverse heritages, their restaurants, their history, their founders, and their tourists. Damn Proud. And locals I encountered were over the top friendly and helpful. Hmm, sitting on the top level of an open bus, taking in the sounds, smells, and people of Chi Town, what a great way to spend a day. It would have taken a lot to ruin this activity! The guides kept switching off, so it was kept fresh and interesting. They were all so passionate and informed. That part was terrific. Yes, the routes took longer than projected, but traffic was crazy busy. And apparently, your vehicle, whatever it is, is required to have a super loud horn, used as often as possible. So plan accordingly, and take advantage of the hop off hop back on feature to look around and go eat. On our recent trip to Chicago we had the pleasure of booking with Chicago Trolley and Double Decker bus tours. Our first encounter was at the main stop where we met Erica, a delightful young lady who sold us our tickets. Being bilingual we were fortunate enough to help Erica with a French customer who could barely speak English. Erica Was great and offered us a bit of a discount for helping get the sale. She held the bus for us while we paid for our tickets and hooked us up with our canal boat tour as well. Once settled on the bus we're were treated to a fun narration by Abe our bus tour guide. Rosie was our driver and drove great! Abe was knowledgeable and provided a fun view of Chicago. My daughter and I both enjoyed him immensely. We stayed on for the whole tour at once without getting off at any stops because we liked him that much. When we disembarked, Erica was still working at the same stop. We were treated to a free T shirt each which we were super thrilled to get! Erica helped us out by pointing out where the nearest cleanest rest rooms were as well as called ahead for our boat tour so we didn't have to worry about it. A lot of these reviews are actually rating the hop on/hop off tours. I am writing this review from the point-of-view or chartering a private trolley for a bar crawl for my friends. If you are looking to charter a private trolley, then I'd highly recommend them. Worked with John S through the entire process. Good communication the entire time. It was slightly more expensive than a couple of the other companies we looked at, but we decided to go with them based mainly on higher Yelp ratings (sidenote: if you want advice on organizing a Chicago trolley bar crawl, shoot me a message I'd be more than happy to share the information I wish I had when I was putting this together). The day before running the Chicago Marathon, I wanted to stay off my feet as much as possible. My first idea was to take one of the architectural boat tours, but since it was Saturday, they were all booked up. So instead, we headed to the nearest double-decker bus stop on Michigan Ave. and bought tickets. It was pretty cold sitting upstairs, but it's really the only way to see the great view and take pictures. I got some amazing shots. We stayed on the bus for the whole loop which took at least two hours, so it was a good deal. At one point we decided to go downstairs to warm up. But you couldn't really see much down there, and some other tourists wouldn't stop talking and were extremely loud. Whatever you do, if you want to go upstairs, make sure you wait until the bus is at a stop. I learned the hard way not to go up the stairs while the bus is in motion when the driver slammed on the brakes and proceeded to yell at me and curse under his breath. But on a beautiful day in Chicago it can be quite nice to sit on the upper deck and feel the breeze while looking at the great architecture. Chicago is amazing American city - with incredible buildings and a fine history. So seeing it - even on such a thing as a tour bus, can be rewarding... even for the locals. I had a great time and it was a fun and easy way to get around the city. Plus you get a free t-shirt, hershey's candy bar and popcorn with your ticket purchase. Overall had a great time on the trolley! This was my first time in Chicago so I had booked the tour with a few friends. The hardest part was to find the STOPs, and the rest was pretty good. Be aware of the few stops (such as #3) where there was construction going on because the bus will not stop at where it said it would on the map... I also wished that they make the signs more obvious.. The 48 hours tour was 48 hours (two full days) although their tours is from 9AM-5PM. We've had quite a few bus drivers and tour guides but I remembered Linda and Kevin the most. They were really knowledgable especially Linda who shared that she was born and raised in Chicago. Kevin was also pretty engaging. If you wanna know how you can freeze your butt off and learn a bit of history about Chicago, book a double decker tour around the city in march and you'll see what I'm talkin' about. The fam and I hopped on this trolley while we were walking around downtown Chicago and though, to some, it may be a bit pricey--I believe it was $29 for adults, not to sure about the munchkins---if you're a history buff and would like to gain a little insight about the place you're vacationing, booking a tour is a great way to learn about your vacation spot. The trolley stops at several locations all around downtown chicago and the tour guides know just what they're talking about. Our first tour guide was funny and interesting. We stopped off at the "Sears Tower" and ended up waiting in line for 2 1/2 hours, we were so ansy that by the time we got up there we stayed for the picture came right back down in about 10 minutes and waited for the next tour bus. This next tour guide was a little older and just as interesting, however, it seemed like he was ready to go home. We liked this on and off tour of Chicago. Lots of information in a short time. One of the tour guides was not good, easily distracted and spent quite a bit of time talking to two 8 and 10 year old annoying girls. Also they had too few trolleys on the road so we waited 45 minutes at Navy Pier. The other hop on hop off company Big Bus Tours had three buses come in that time. No complaints. The double decker came as scheduled which was every 20 minutes since this past week was still considered off season. As our hotel was on the Magnificent Mile, we had a choice of several convenient stops. We got on at the Hard Rock Cafe advertised stop. It came at 9:00am and we piled on. This is a good stop at the beginning of the day as it comes empty. You actually load across the street on the McDonald's side of the street. We settled on the 3 day ticket as it was the best deal. We paid upon boarding. Also purchased our Art Institute entrance ticket from Chicago Trolley and Double Decker upon boarding and saved $2 per ticket. As the weather varied this past week, it was either very hot or very cold sitting upstairs. Bring a light windbreaker or a sweater. We sat downstairs yesterday afternoon as we were only riding one stop from the Field Museum to the Sheraton stop. I wouldn't suggest sitting downstairs for visual sightseeing as your vision is blocked by the mesh advertising on all their buses. Plus the loudspeaker is blaring the tour guide's narrative along the way. We had energetic and informative tour guides along the way. One tour guide also announced the stops where you can hop off to redeem your various coupons. We redeemed our free Tshirt, Hershey bar, Garrett popcorn, and Chicka Fil ones. Best part of our Chicago trip. Allowed us to get around, see the sites and never have to get our car out of the parking garage. We got the three day pass. There were several stops around the city one right by our hotel. You can get on and off at any stop for most of the day. Buses run about every ten minutes. The night tour runs 6pm to 10pm. It has only 4 stops and doesn't go out as far. One of the stops is navy pier which is fun at night. During the tours you get lots of information from the guides. Some guides are better than others. Some are funny, some are factual, some are annoying if you don't like the guide then hop off and catch the next bus. We had beautiful weather for the tours. I don't think it would be very fun in the rain. You can sit in the bottom though and still hear the tour and enjoy the ride. Don't take what the guides say as fact. After riding several different buses and several different guides we kept hearing contrasting stories and facts about the sites. But we all really enjoyed it. A must for families with kids too. While there are moments you get useful tidbits of information about the city and sites, the guides talk nonstop about random, political, personal and/or non relevant topics to the point where my friend's 3-year-old asked me when they will stop talking. We would have enjoyed the tour more - and tips increased - if talking had been minimized so passengers could talk w their groups, take in the sites, etc. It would have been more preferred if they tried to engage bus travelers about their questions etc. Also, the route was a tad odd and we seemed to double pass millennium park 3x versus taking more direct routes but not really a big deal. Chicago trolley company was perfect for a private trolley rental for my friend and I's birthday party! We sent out quotes to a lot of trolley companies and they were the cheapest for a group our size. Their trolleys seat 32 people and they offer trash bags and will have the clean up as part of their fee. Their drivers really know the city and made our stops perfect!! The one thing to note is their trolleys dont have a/c nor did they have lights they could turn on so I think it wasn't ideal for a night ride. We still had a great time though!!! read more

Making holiday memories doing the Chicago holiday lights tour. Overall the concept is a great idea...get driven around to see the best and brightest of Chicago while making 2 stops along the way. Knowing Chicago, there's traffic. Our driver did a great job of giving the group fun facts and trivia questions to keep the fun alive. The stops were short, especially given the crowds, but honestly I don't see prolonging the stops as a plausible option either. With groups that large, it would be hard to do more than 30 min stops without consuming 1/2 of your day. I like doing these tours because in short amount of time, you get good grasp of all things that the city has to offer. You get an idea of where places are located and you also get a brief history as well. It is even better when your tour guide is interactive with the group and can answer any questions. This company is popular and gets very crowded during the peak summer months. There a variety of tours to choose from, we opted to do the signature tour. It might seem pricey at first, but it is a great way to avoid parking and if you are visiting for a limited amount of time, this is the best way to see the city without having to deal with the traffic. They payment machine they were using was super slow, and this caused me to miss the trolley I had planned on catching. I was kind of hoping that the ticket seller would be able to get the bus to wait an extra 30-seconds, but no dice. So I hung out with that chipper seller for like 20 minutes. And then the bus came! I was travelling alone for a work conference, and thought the trolley would be a good way to see a lot of the city in the little time I had. I did see quite a bit. There are two separate routes and I saw 1.5 of them. The first tour guide I had sang the whole Married With Children theme song, so props to him for that. The second tour guide was kind of flustered, especially when the bus got stuck in traffic. But her love of Oprah was deep, and for this I have lots of respect for her. Was it the best tour trolley I've ever been on? No, not even close. But it was interesting, to say the least. read more

While we were visiting the Adler museum we decided to hop on the trolley for a tour, we had no ticket yet but the driver said she will take us up to were purchase the tickets, she was so smiley and sweet, I was so glad to see around the city everything I really wanted to get closer and see, did not want to drive our car especially I am from out of town. 5 stars for friendly people relaxing smooth tour, best for family with kids. A brilliant way to get around and get a taste for all there is to see in Chicago. The best way to make the most of the hop-on/hop-off style tour is to start out early and/or get a multi-day pass and make sure you get off at each stop and explore the surrounds. Don't sit out the route looking at the sites, there's so much behind the buildings and in the museums. A little of Chicago's famous Garret's popcorn to keep you going for the day and you're off on a wondersul adventure to see an incredible and eclectic city. You can do everything from enjoying the art and history of the museums, to feeding the desire to shop, shop, shop! $US29 / day. Stopping at all the great sites. My company hired a trolley for a company outing, and it was tons of fun. Maybe a bit too much fun, as I forgot my backpack on the trolley. Once I realized, I kinda freaked out, I had a computer that I spent a lot of effort configuring, my prescription sunglasses, it would have been a disaster to have lost it. I called them right after they're supposed to open today, like 9am on a Saturday, and a very nice guy answered. He asked me to describe the bag, and then confirmed they found it in the trolley, they've got it in the office, and then gave me very detailed directions on how to get to their office. I get to their office, and it was such a relief. The guy seemed legitimately pleased to have had the opportunity to help me out like that. Then when I asked if I could leave a tip, he refused saying he's just doing his job. I think his conduct makes a real statement about this business. There are lots of places you can get a trolley, but the people here are honestly committed to helping you have a good time. They're helpful, fun, nice, it was great. Considering that whole experience could've gone in a very different direction, I can't tell you how much I appreciated that they're staffed with guys like him. read more

This is a review of the Holiday Lights Tour (not the Hop On-Hop Off tour). Pros: We board the trolley and manage to get seats together, though I saw some people who weren't as lucky (PRO TIP: Arrive early). We leave a few minutes ahead of schedule because we were full and our first stop is Sprinkles for a free red velvet cupcake (no napkins though and they were definitely needed). Our driver was really nice. That's it for the pros. Cons: While the driver was nice and did a good job navigating some tough traffic, the other employee--the tour guide--was awful. As soon as we embarked on our journey, she started talking nonsense about some old tv show no one on the trolley had ever heard of and then proceeded to play the theme song off her phone for a few minutes (which obviously wasn't even loud enough for everyone to hear--though maybe I envy those who couldn't hear it). She then started to rotate through random holiday songs--many of which were by Twisted Sister for some reason (at one point she even said 'No one else likes this song, but I do')--still playing from her phone. The trip to the zoo took ages because of the traffic. That was no fault of the tour company, but it's something that really needs to be rethought--it seems like it would have been much faster to take Lakeshore and come up the back entrance of the zoo through the parking lot instead of taking Stockton. We got 30 minutes at the zoo (not nearly enough time to see the entire thing), then get back on the trolley and head go the Christkindlmarket. The terrible music continues although the driver seemed to have remembered she had a portable speaker, so at least it wasn't playing off her phone anymore. Once we got to the market, we decided to bail on the tour altogether because a) we knew the market would be a miserable, crowded mess and b) we would have had a better time walking home in the cold than sitting on that trolley for the rest of the ride. Conclusion: My family has been on holiday light tours in several other cities and this was by far the worst and I would never recommend it to others. Seriously--at $30 a pop, this was ridiculous. What a waste of money for what ended up being nothing more than a glorified taxi ride to the zoo and Christkindlmarket! We expected the trolley to at least try to hit up streets that contained lots of lights or something, but that didn't happen. Next year, they should reconsider whether or not both major stops are really necessary. They should lose the Christkindlmarket since it's always uncomfortably crowded and give people an hour at the zoo instead. read more
