Raymarine gives little to no instructions for all the products they sell, and I don't care how much 12 volt system knowledge and experience you have...you are going to end up leaning on these guys for help. Brian showed up at my boat and in less than an hour solved my power up issues with my autopilot and at the same time, got rid of the magnetic interference warning message I was receiving at initial power up of the unit. These guys are professional, prompt, and right to the point. After dealing with three different marina vulture electricians, I finally got a referral from a Leopard 45 owner in Point Loma, a few slips down who had Brian at Upgrade Marine do some extensive Navigation electronics, and a great looking solar installation. He had been referred to them by a friend of his with one of the larger 50' class motor yachts in Mission Bay or Coronado (can't remember which). All referrals rated Upgrade Marine as excellent. Contact was easy using their website form, and they got back to me by the end of the day. Having Google and yelp reviews, as well as an actual location, not some mystery PO Box, was a big plus. And the best of all, their head tech did some advanced troubleshooting and found my problem in under an hour. The low skill guys were a massive waste of time and money. You can't go wrong with spending a bit more with someone who knows what they're doing, rather than some low skill guy throwing parts at a problem, and hoping for the best. Next up electronics wise for my Catalina 400 will be an installation of a flexible / removable solar system on my expensive Iverson canvas, a Victron battery monitor system with smart phone interface and an inverter system. I'm probably also going to have them go through and inspect my boat stereo system and look for Red Flags from another low skill 'marine electrician'. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to work with unprofessional alleged 'specialists' who you can't find review for or even any trace of their existence online. Bottom line, these guys are reliable, do great work, and I consider them money well spent. read more

Upgrade Marine installed my Solar system 2 1/2 years ago in San Diego. Since then I have traveled over 6,000 miles through Mexico, Central America Panama Canal, Jamaica and to Florida. In Costa Rica we were anchored for 2 months and the system kept the batteries charged daily. We ran the freezer daytime only. Leaving Panama the alternator went out and with all systems running, no freezer but autopilot and navigation the system kept everything running. We were traveling 24/7 so the batteries were charged enough to run all night. From Jamaica to Florida the alternator went out again. And once again the system was flawless. I decided against a wind generator because of the cost and noise. The system they installed was amazing. It's important to have the Bluetooth function so I could lay in bed and monitor the batteries. I would watch his team like a hawk.. Brian stated that his team would never arrive without fully equipped with all items, they forgot a few things.. They padded not only their time, as i was there keeping track, but they also padded and over charged what they charged me for items used.. They also didn't finish the job and I have a hole in my bulkhead with an outlet being installed upside down, even though I paid for 3 wire.. They were especially responsive, and their Quote was easy to read and logical. When I compared their Quote to others, it turns out that Upgrade knew precisely what to do, which saved more than $10,000. Once the work was started, Justin was finished as rapidly as possible. I have known Brian by reputation for over a year and recently needed help with my boat. All of the jokes about boats are true... hole in the water for your money. :-) I have been experiencing some mysterious electrical problems resulting in a couple of vendors costing me money and not really fixing the problem.
