My wife and I were trying to work with Tony at Top Notch Upholstery. Top Notch had done work for aunt and my step-mom, so naturally we wanted to work with them based off the reference. Everything was going well. We were in constant communication and Tony was informing us of everything we needed to purchase in order to have a Bay Window bench seat made and two antique wing back arm chairs refinished. Tony had us go out and buy foam and fabric. When everything finally arrived and we were so excited to get the project underway we scheduled a time for Tony to come over and measure for the bench seat, so we could have a nice custom fit. Tony arrived to our house on a stormy day with lots of rain and mud. Now, we do not wear shoes inside our house and we have a 9 month old just becoming mobile. He crawls all around so we try to keep our floors clean for health reasons. Tony knocks at the door and I greet him and asked if he could take off his shoes. He said they are very hard to take off and he would go get booties. We then hear is truck start and he leaves. We think he didn't have them in his truck and wanted to go get some. An hour and a half passes and he does not return, so we text him. He replies, I cannot help you call someone else. We call him on the phone to clarify, we are confused, all we did was ask him to remove his shoes. He said in 40 years of working in very nice houses he has never been disrespected by someone asking him to remove his shoes. It was a storm, water, mud, and we have a nine month old crawling. We explained all this to him and he very crassly said, I cannot help you. It is too much work for such a small job. Beware of this company. read more

I concur with Donald P.'s review -- Custom Auto Upholstery is fantastic and I highly recommend them. I recently needed the leather on the bottom cushion of my driver's seat redone as it had torn hideously. I went and got several quotes, fully expecting it to cost several hundred dollars. Many places were indeed several hundred dollars and insisted that I replace the underlying foam in the cushion as well. Tony at Custom Auto Upholstery, on the other hand, said he could do just the leather (in other words, what I actually wanted) without upselling me on things that I didn't want. As a result, his quote was about half what the other places I went to were asking. Even though my job was relatively small (i.e. just one cushion), Tony walked me around his shop and showed several other cars that he had done recently, including one just like mine. From even a cursory glance, the outstanding quality was obvious. Tony also showed me an Acura NSX that he had done the seat upholstery in several years ago and that the owner had brought back (from Oregon, no less) to have Tony do the carpets as well. No downsides, but an FYI on calling Tony: he said that sometimes he absent-mindedly forgets to pay his landline phone bill and the number gets disconnected. Thus, if you try calling Tony's shop and get a disconnected number message, don't panic. Either call his cell or just stop on by the shop. He's usually there. read more

The leather (front) seats in my wife's Integra had been neglected and started to crack and were looking bad. I went shopping for quotes at auto upholstery shops and I checked out Aby's Custom Upholstery and Custom Auto Upholstery. I went with Tony at Custom Auto Upholstery because he gave a better price and he was able to get an exact match to leather that Acura used so the new seats would match the back seats that were not being done. He even spent time showing me some the work that he had in progress on another job to give me an example of the quality of his work. Tony had to order the leather and ran into some issues with the supplier but he kept me updated. Once the leather came in we dropped off the car and in less than 24 hours the seats were transformed. The seats looked like the seats of a brand new car. The quality and attention to detail was outstanding. Both my wife and I were extremely pleased with the way the seats turned out. I highly recommend Tony because not only does he do exceptional work, he does a great job of keeping you updated on the progress of his work. read more

I am rebuilding a fastback 67 cuda for friend (not for money) that has fought me at every step. Its such a rare car and the first year meant a lot of one off elements that were changed the next year. Top Notch was the only vendor to come in on budget, on time and beyond expectations. They even did more work than prescribed plus used their own materials for FREE because they had a better than what I bought from an Classic Industries. Tony is just a great guy. He is fast, honest and excited to work with you. It took awhile to get the big job in the shop (about 30 days) but it was a complete interior (full carpet, headliner, dash, front & back seats and rebuilding the arm rests.) It was so easy to work with Tony and his sons--I could not recommend them any stronger. I brought my Jeep Wrangler here a few years ago with a growing tear in the driver's seat upholstery. It took longer than I would have expected for Tony to get the fabric in stock, but once he had it I only had to leave the Jeep with him for a couple of hours and he had it done. The finished work looked beautiful when I first saw it and today it still looks like the seat was never damaged in the first place. OK, I cannot comment on the work they do at this place. The only thing I can comment on is that it's hard to do business with them. They never answered the phone number they list here on Yelp. I drove over to find it locked up. They had a mobile phone number on the sign at the shop and I called that. They were out eating lunch. If 12-1 is closed for lunch, then publish that somewhere. If not, then be there. I gave up on this place regardless of how great they may do a job with their leather work. I headed over to Valencia Auto Upholstery, spent about 30 minutes with Tony getting the best match for me, and gave him a deposit. I drop the car off on Friday and I'll review them after that. Hard to understand why it took so long to get into this guy. I waited almost two months as Tony kept putting me off because of his scheduled work. I finally took my '69 El Camino in for a new vinyl top replacement and rebuild the interior sail panels. The actual vinyl top came out good but he left the chrome trim installed with a jagged edge all the way down both sides. When I questioned it he said, "that's how Chevy make it." Unbelievable! If you rubbed against it you would likely slice your arm open. The interior sail panels were even worse. Really poor craftsmanship. And the final straw. Although I provided all the material he gouged me for $550! Yeh, I think he saw the white guy coming. Sorry, too many decent upholsterers in the valley to deal with this crap. Suggest you look elsewhere. read more

I called around, and found the shop to get my G35 drivers seat re-holstered. Met with Tony that day, and I was so impressed by his professionalism, how he explained what he would need to do to get a perforated and smooth leather seat made, he matched up the color, and I placed my order the same day. I called him on 06-16-2011 to get an estimate on my car's arm rest & he told me I'd have to come in so that he can take a look at it first. I come in that same day, he inspects the arm rest, tells me how he's gonna fix it, then gives me a price. That's what I call an honest man! I took my 1964 Mercury Comet to Top Notch for a quote for upholstery and carpets. Tony was patient and helpful with helping me to select the right fabric and carpet for this classic. He quoted a very reasonable price, gave me a timeline for him to order the material, and a date to deliver the car for installation. When I dropped off the car he told me it would be a week to complete. I felt that was reasonable and honestly expected it to take more time. Instead, he completed it early and I was blown away when I picked up my car. He did a fantastic job installing all carpets and upholstery and maintained the integrity of the interior by keeping all of the original design details. It looked stock and I could not have been more thrilled. We have referred friends to Tony and will continue to do so, in addition to taking an future projects to him. Tony did a PHENOMENAL job! I had a tear in two of my fabric tweed seats-- on a brand new leased car. The dealership AND Bascom Trim and Upholstery (who most dealerships will refer you to) told me I needed brand new seat covers (for $1650! Eek!) Tony took part of my ruined seat cover that wasn't damaged, chopped it up and sewed it to fit the other damaged seat cover, something the dealership and Bascom Upholstery said was impossible. He perfectly replicated the original seams and charged LESS THAN HALF of the labor cost the other companies wanted--and he did double the work! Very sweet guy, cannot recommend him enough. I called Tony about the front seat in my 85 El Camino, which I'm restoring. Over the phone he was very nice and gave me competitive price. I figured that once I got there he would find things needed that may add to the price. I own a business and sometimes that is what happens. It's not always easy to predict what you'll find on a job over the phone. Not only did he stick with his price, but he gave me some suggestions to make my seat even nicer than the original. I thought these changes would then raise the price. It did not! I brought it in on a Tuesday, and he said it would be done on Friday or Saturday. What more could I ask for? Called the shop around 14:00 and asked if they could install an aftermarket seat cover on my DRZ, the guy I spoke to said, "yeah, no problem, just swing on by!" Hopped on my bike and 15 minutes later he was working on removing my older cover and foam and installing the replacement. I was in and out within 30 minutes. Tony did a great job repairing the tear on the driver seat cushion of my 99 Accord. He was able to save the original leather and close the seam. He also replaced the seat foam and welded a broken part of the seat frame all for the original quoted price. Above and beyond what I expected. He was very flexible and easy to work with. I was referred to Top Notch shop by my mechanic. I went in got an estimate and took it in and was given a great price. I was so,happy with the excellent work and the great customer service. the shop had some very nice cars that were having convertible tops replaced and a GTO that was being done, My car needed to have the seat welded and was most likely not as profitable to the shop as others but he welded my drivers seat so it is not wobbling and my seat belts so that i can drive without the seat wobbling. I first took my car to Bascom Upholstery on Aldo in Santa Clara and they gave me an outrageous estimate and said I needed to order and pay for a seat to be shipped from Nevada then they needed to take the leather from my seat and put it onto the new seat and quoted me 6xs as much as Top Notch. Top Notch welded my original seat and fixed my seat belts for a 6th of the cost. The owner of Top Notch IS HONEST AND VERY PROFESSIONAL.
