I've eaten here more than a few times and it's been a solid experience every time - really good food, beer, and service. I typically get the black bean burger and fries. The outdoor seating is nice when the weather cooperates. But when a restaurant has lots of reviews that reflect similar experiences, I don't feel the need to chime in. Making an exception to give a shout out to the awesome server we had the other night - Sally. She took care of us when we ate in the bar area and made sure we had everything we needed. My company stayed in Columbus, IN and Upland was a quick walk from our hotel. We hosted dinner in their basement event space for 2 evenings. Good areas: the team was ready for us both nights, with appetizers and bartenders. The rooms are spacious and overall felt clean. A separate restroom is available downstairs. I also appreciated the friendliness of the team and they kept the tables cleared of finished dishes and glasses. I feel sure that if I had dinner in the main restaurant it would have been a better food experience; however, the catered food was not impressive. Bland, boring, felt like a potluck. Someone ordered a pretzel in beer cheese from the real menu and it was awesome! I wish our food experience had felt more like that. The beers were also so, so heavy. I tried several and could only finish the IPA. Cocktails were very basic and also not well mixed. Night 2 I stuck with cheap Chardonnay. We had a group of 40-50 and the heaviness of the beer was a highlight of the conversation. The basement area has poor acoustics. On night 1, this is where we met up and 30 minutes into the cocktail hour we were yelling at each other. In a post Covid world this felt odd to yell and be so close to each other to hear the conversation. We finally decided to venture out today for the first time since March 18 and chose Upland's Pump House here in Columbus to support this local business. It is situated along the banks of the Flatrock River and they have both pleasant back patio seating and an airy lifted ceiling inside of an old train station. To comply with social distancing, they still have curbside pickup as well as indoor and outdoor seating with the tables spread at least 6 feet apart, operating at 50% capacity. When you first arrive, there is hand sanitizer just inside the door before you head in to the host stand. As you look through the windows into the open viewed kitchen you can see all the employees wearing masks. At the host stand, there is someone ready to help take you to a table either inside or out, depending on your choice and availability. They now have paper menus and their beers are still listed daily on the walls. Once you are seated, a tile with a red side and a green side is given to you to place at the edge of your table depending on your needs. Our waitress brought us a water carafe and two glasses filled with ice so we may refill it at our leisure. When we turned our tile to green, she asked us our beer orders and when they came, she took our food orders, flipped our tile over to red and we waited a short time for our appetizer to come out. The food was delivered by a server who pushed a trolley with plates on it instead of carrying them in their hands or on their arms, while wearing gloves. I never saw these servers touch anything but food with their gloves hands(not used dishes, trash or money). Our Bavarian Pretzel was hot and delicious, just as we remembered it being the last time we came. Our pretzel came with a side of beer cheese, stone ground mustard and pimento cheese. (I am not a big pimento cheese fan, but theirs is delicious!) The Fish and Chips were delicious as always, battered and fried to perfection. We also tried something new from the Sharables Menu called Boneless Pork Chop Tips. The apples were sweet and just a little soft and a little crunchy. The baked barbecue peanut sauce was Smokey and the nuts crunchy. The pork was cooked just right and fell apart in your mouth. The Collard Greens were cooked perfectly as well. Overall, we give this dish a huge thumbs up for their reimagination in old Southern Cooking. It was so nice to have some sense of "getting back to living life" and we appreciate everything Upland and their staff has done to train themselves to protect themselves and their customers. If you are looking for a lovely place to get out and support a local business while staying safe with social distancing, hand washing/sanitizing and a health conscious and attentive staff, look no further than your own Backyard and visit Upland! read more

Usually we love this place but today was a disappointment with the food, service and bar drinks. Our original server was switched mid-meal and didn't tell us. The new server seemed sleepy. 2 of the 4 plates had to be replaced due to a pink hamburger which was ordered well and fish that was cold in the middle. Cocktails were subpar. read more

This place hosts my favorite dining experience in Columbus! The property is large and boasts a great outdoor deck with plenty of seating, a river walk, and great views and decor. The inside is also spacious and homey, nicely split between bar seating and classic restaurant tables. Today I was dining with my mom who eats gluten free and the offerings did not disappoint. We split a black bean burger and a margherita pizza. Both were top notch and I totally recommend ordering them. I love a good black bean burger and Upland has one of my favorite paddies. There are tons of options with this paddy as you can substitute it on any of their many burger options. The fries here are also such a staple. Lastly, Upland boasts a great beer selection and I love to try one or two different every time I come. Overall, this is the place to be in Columbus if you're looking for great and friendly hometown service, a menu with tons of options, and a lively atmosphere! read more

I'm a fan of Upland in Indianapolis and I was excited to see a location in Columbus. I came with a few friends and enjoyed the Hot Chicken Sandwich. Food and drinks were good, service was great, and we luckily didn't have to wait to be seated. Nice place to get some good grub and some homemade craft beers. Outside dining wasn't an option since the weather was cold and kind of rainy. Plenty of room inside. Unique place and decor as a craft beer brewery. Staff was okay but seemed a tad hurried. Picked up some very good Octoberfest to take home. Draft was out but they had 6 packs left. My wife's salad was plentiful however they did forget the courtons for the salad. I had jalapeño burger, nice and spicy but not overly unbearable hot. Great stout! read more

Stopped by for dinner on a Wednesday night and got right in. The place is neat inside with cool architecture. They offer several vegetarian and vegan dishes. I ordered the Thai Tofu salad. If you love fresh veggies this salad is amazing. Almost chose the Zesty hummus. Yum. My husband ordered the Bad Elmer's burger. He devoured every bite. We are definitely coming back. We met some friends here for lunch on Sunday. The atmosphere and setting are great! We really enjoyed the architecture and being on the river. The bloody Marys were pretty fantastic to look at and also delicious. The beer selection is, of course, very good and the Mimosa's went over well with the people who ordered them. Would have ordered this every time, but wanted to try a few things. It's not very spicy but the blue cheese and jalapeño spread has incredible flavor. 2) Blackberry and Beets Salad w/ Orange Vinaigrette Dressing: Incredible salad. I love the goat cheese. Recommend substituting the Turkey with chicken as the Turkey left me wanting more. 3) Pig and Fig: again, if you like goat cheese a great option. Wish there was more fig jam. We were welcomed by Nicole our fabulous bartender and she gave us the details of the beers on tap and we tried a couple styles apiece, as we commented to each other on the taste of every one we tried. We all agreed to order food from the menu after trying the beers and we were blown away by the selections and ordered burgers with beer cheese, blackened salmon with blue cheese slaw,flatbread with bacon and chicken. We couldn't put our fork or sandwich down. We were all so impressed with the attentive bartender, fantastic food and tasty libations, we knew we had to repeat our visit. We then toasted with another beer and talked about other brewpubs we frequented saying they couldn't keep up with Upland. We have been back 4 times and were never disappointed. We sat Inside but the patio overlooked the river and looked like a good place to sit. We started with the fried cheese curds. Awesome. I had the inferno burger. Cooked medium rare with a lot of red just like I like them cooked. The habanero sauce was painfully delicious. The fried are breaded and really good. I dipped them into the habanero sauce for the burger. My wife got the beer cheese burger. Equally good. Beer is good too. I had both of the IPAs they had available (Juiced in Time & Tropical Vortex), both great; my wife drank a glass of a very good Malbec they carry. She had the Margherita Pizza (plus onions and pepperoni) which she loved; I had the Classic Burger which was perfect. Everything was really really good. I've gotten to try the food here once and sadly the service was so bad we decided to not come back after not even being served the second time. The first time was pleasant with no complaints. The second time, the server sat us and never came back to our table. We watched her go get multiple new table's orders but never put our order in. We were very confused by what was going on. I've been in busy restaurants before and have never been treated like that. This place was not full. Not a single server came to check on us. This is our second visit here at lunch, to their pleasant deck over a river. First, their COVID response is very good, 8 out of 10. Staff are fully masked, tables have been removed inside and out to do a more than 6 foot spacing, even on the deck. The menus are printed on a copier so one to a customer, no re -use. I love the way they put you on a wait list by sending a text when your table is ready. Now the food, what its all about. Their Sunday lunch menu isn't gigantic but it has something for just about everyone. Lots of appetizers, 4 to 5 salads, LOTS of burger options. I chose an appetizer, the roasted bone marrow, as i has no idea what it was. Interesting, mostly fat you spread on toast points with some fresh greens. It was rich, interesting flavor. I've had it now, not going to order again, but not bad. RRR got the bison burger ordered as he wished medium, (cheddar, pickles, red onion) and it was perfect., very tasty. He also ordered their fries which are freaky, REALLY good. (I might have eaten a couple). Beer, yeah, they have that and and really delicious. We both had the Bad Elmer porter abs loved it.
