I've never eaten anything here that was short of delicious! The baked goods, the soups, the sandwiches. Everything is great. Their soups are made fresh and are usually very flavorful and filling. Everything in their salads is fresh. They also have a good selection of hot and cold sandwiches. Their big tomato sandwich is great in the summer. They also use a lot of local and organic products in their bakery. Their baked goods are available at the Columbia Farmer's Market in the summer and at Hyvee. For all intents and purposes, this is Ragtag. I think quite highly of Ragtag, so it's no surprise that I love the attached bakery. Uprise has really really really good food. Their coffees are great, their sandwiches are slap-your-mom good, their bakery items are mouth-watering, and their breads are perfect. Why not 5-stars? Well... they're just a tad pricey. I was very excited to try this bakery as I had heard many good things about it. I had the chicken sandwich, which was alright. The bread was a bit hard and chewy and for the 9 dollar price tag you would have thought it came with a side and a beverage but came to my table all alone. This place was a Whoa! Surprise. I was expecting good cupcakes, these though, were only so-so*, but the bread and phyllo products were inventive and delicious. *I always rate a cupcake with my eyes closed, and by if the 'cake' tastes good separate from the frosting. These did not pass (chocolate), but the frosting was money (easier). The ultra-light foccacia, with a spicy bite was a HUGE hit with my mate. The empanadas were meaty and filling. The food, particularly the breads are good. The soups are great in the winter time (never ordered during the summers because I was already warm). The coffee is alright, the ambiance is a bit bland for sit-in. However, I always checked out the photos on the hallway to the bathroom. This has a good location downtown that is easy to get to when walking. I usually picked up their breads at the farmer's markets but during the off-months I kept a copy of their bread schedule at home and planned walks downtown based on what type I wanted. read more

They sold us a burned loaf of bread at their farmer's market stand. I guess that will teach me to always look inside the bag before leaving the stand, but I really shouldn't have to do this. Out-of-this-world bread, solid soups (all vegetarian), great coffee that still costs $1.35! I worked here for years and can confirm that this is a place you should feel proud patronizing. The owners and managers care truly, madly, deeply not only about the quality of their food, but the quality of their community. They sacrifice for their employees on the regular. One of the best places to hang out in Columbia. Everything in this place to eat is so awesome, specially I love their potato knish and all their soups. It is connected to Ragtag cinema showing amazing small budget movies, cd shop and bar. Nothing can be better in that small town. I did my PhD from MU and I loved that place. read more

I don't write reviews, as I use all of you others to tell me which places are good but you really let me down with this one. Service was okay, price was good but food was pretty bad. I expected a warm, soft, homemade cinnamon roll but what I got was, although clearly homemade, a dry, and cold cinnamon roll. To wash that down I had a terrible iced coffee. I took two sips and one bite. Waste of my time. Also, a tad bit overboard with the hipster vibe. I wouldn't recommend. It's hard to top a bowl of soup with a k'nish from Uprise on a cold day... makes me hungry just thinking about it.

I always enjoy the soups the most, and they are always different. Today had a beet soup (not borscht) and a sweet potato stew with kale and chickpeas and spiced peanuty broth; other times celeriac bisque or black eyed pea and greens or other delights. I like the bread a lot, too, although beware if you don't like crust! And the sandwiches (usually get roasted veggie with goat cheese). I like the other items I've tried, too (other than the very first croissant I had here--but the next/last 4 have all been good)--goat cheese marinara bread plate, quiche, turnovers, croissants. And they have outdoor seating for when the weather is nice (like today). read more

Possibly one of the best sandwiches in the universe. The roast chicken and cuban are amazing. The bread is unreal, along with everything else on the sandwich. Coffee is decent and theres always good beers at the bar. Sometimes service is spotty, waits can be long. I guess you should expect that from a place that primarily employs hipsters, no hate I enjoy it. read more

Great local place, great food! We stopped by during a road trip and was so happy with everything we ordered. Had BLT, grilled ham, pizza, house salad, curry potatoes and carrot beet soups. All were fantastic. It seems all food was made from scratch so it took a little while to get our food, but we weren't in a hurry. Recommended! read more

The Uprise Bakery has a warm, friendly, intellectual atmosphere to go with it's excellent artisan baked goods. The food consists of familiar favorites with an exceptionally high level of quality. The best feature of Uprise Bakery has got to be that you can take your food into Ragtag. The ultimate dinner and a movie. The staff is friendly and the customers are great! Every time I'm there something goes wrong with service. Onetime the bar tender said he would not make a drink for me because he was too busy and told me to order something else. The last time I was there, the cashier charged me more than the advertised price for a bakery item. I used to like it because I was quiet enough for me to hold a conversation with friends. Had dinner on a Friday night a couple weeks ago. Sold out of my first choice of the curry chicken salad, so I took the Cuban pork sandwich instead. Not your typical Cuban by anyone's standards but it was good with a nice spicy bite and excellent ingredients. My wife and niece each had the humus plate and split an order of the goat cheese marninara. They were very pleased with their choices. The atmosphere is very eclectic and relaxed. A group from work did lunch here today for a co-workers birthday. I ordered the BLT and an ice water which totaled $8 and change. The sandwich arrived and was 90% a baguette. Three strips of under cooked and extremely fatty bacon were all that was on this 8-9" baguette. Definitely underwhelming and overpriced. Staff at the register was friendly but the server who brought our food was very rude with a condescending/haughty attitude. Our table did not even ask her for anything nor the table next to us when she decided to be so rude to both tables. She also walked up to our table in a nude completely sheer top with a white bra underneath so pretty much in her bra. If it was a Saturday night in a different venue I wouldn't have been surprised to see something like this downtown however at a professional lunch on a Wednesday afternoon with both men and women it was quite uncomfortable for all of us. I cannot imagine that any of the 8 of us will ever go back. The one positive note- If I could rate the bread alone it would receive 4 stars. read more
