Our waitress was not very friendly , which was quite disappointing. Both of us have been in the business and would not hire her in our establishment. (Hopefully this was a rare off day) The food was delicious! My medium rare meat was perfectly done, the salad cart is a nice touch, albeit the salad bowls are very (too) small. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her vegetarian main dish. The individual dessert shot glasses are a unique & fun option. Pretty good food for McHenry, but nothing is tell people from out of town to travel to. It's fresh & that's probably the best thing about the place is quality of food is top notch. Flavor department is lacking. Made reservations for 5:30, on a Friday night. Promptly greeted & seated. Overall fantastic service from all of staff. Rare these days, & they all seemed genuinely happy, so kudos to management. Server explained specials & got drinks quickly. We were indecisive in the menu. Didn't really get good direction when asked what's more popular. Suggested Beet appetizer. Good, maybe would get again. Needed more pesto. Goat cheese was fresh, but dollops vs spread made it a bit too heavy on cheese. Pepitas we're a fun surprise that worked well. Balsamic was very good. They overdo it on the garnishes! Add micro greens instead, where it's easy to eat & not so large. Salad dressings were FANTASTIC! All made in house & blue cheese was fresh . Mixed greens or romaine lettuce, or both. Variety of options to put on your salad was odd, depending on which salad dressing you decided at the end. - 1 Cherry tomato - 2/3 carrots - olives - red onion - garlic - ginger - black pepper Needs more veggies to choose from. Would probably order a salad as a meal next time. Ordered: Salmon Fillet - great size piece & cooked as asked... some seasoning would have made it better - rather bland dish overall - veggies were very good, but should have gotten more vs massive beet - risotto with spinach was very good for the suburbs Overall happy with meal. Chicken Caprese - great portion of chicken... took some home! - pesto very good, would buy that to go if they sold in a jar - veggies & risotto same as above - bland dish without the pesto - Sweet potato chips had no flavor & not crispy. Needed to be tossed in some paprika or salt. Non important cons: UpROOTED - get the root theme, but it's a bit unnecessary in all of the dishes. Leave the roots to only certain dishes where it makes sense. Aesthetic is bizarre. Very miss matched & not actually classy. Aesthetically feels out of place. You don't know if you should dress up or be casual. Ambiance is trying to be classy, but it's not there yet... Too loud to talk by 6:30... this became frustrating to carry on a conversation. Hard-Hard-Hard Pass: Don't know what the rant and rave is all about here. First off...when you see that they're advertising for a chef / cook out front...you know what you're in for. I had heard from some that this was a wonderful place to eat. So, besides all the signs to leave, we decided to give it a shot. The food wasn't that great. It's more expensive, and to be honest with you, you have a whole bunch of bar regulars who state it's the best food around while You're in there...but taking it from the "bar regulars"... seriously. They don't know good food from a McDonalds Happy Meal.... Since the back end was not open (we heard it's nice) when we arrived, we sat at the bar and ate. Had their Seasonal Salad for starters. It was bland, but nothing memorable. I had the shrimp boil and my wife had the Chilean Sea Bass. The Sea Bass was very strong fishy tasting, and it was not cooked or seasoned properly. (Go to Joes Seafood downtown Chicago..or Capital Grill Schaumburg for the price and quality, you're better off) My shrimp boil was drowning in a 1/2 inch of melted butter.... I ended up eating 1/2 of it... couldn't stomach anymore, and neither could my arteries . I had an Arnold Palmer and my wife had a vodka soda water. The bartender was overwhelmed, and there wasn't a lot of people in there when we came in: 2pm. He seemed like you hired him right after working out in the fields of the local farm a few miles away. All of that...(yes) for $135.00. (No Desert)...for Lunch/Dinner So let me ask you. Would you pay that here? In McHenry...not including tip? You're damn nuts if you think we're coming back. I gave you an extra star because the place was clean and so were the bathrooms for the most part. By far- not impressed. This place was VERY underwhelming for me. I've seen such rave reviews and honestly I wouldn't go back or recommend it to anyone. We went for a birthday, got steaks, that all just really tasted like the oil they were cooked in. No flavor at all. It was SO loud in the restaurant it was hard to even talk to the server, and then the salad cart, supposed to be amazing and it's a wonderful concept for a salad lover like me but, the options are sort of out there. There's no cheese, carrots, cucumber, croutons, but there's ginger and onions and horseradish or something along those lines, also a lack of dressing options for a steakhouse. 3/5 of us did not enjoy our meals. What is sad is they have good food, generous portion. As for the service that's left to be desired. We made a reservation for 15 ladies, received a confirmation so they knew we were coming. There was 1 server covering our group, the rest of the restaurant patrons, and bar. She kept repeating she was alone she's the only 1.... After 2 hours I asked for my check and she lost her mind... She was running around like a crazy women came back with a pile of checks slammed one in my hand then grabbed it back saying it was the wrong one. we offered to pass them out for her but she said NO she wants them in those black check things. I'm sorry I inconvenience you ,I had another commitment I needed to get to. One of the other ladies offered to pay my check so that I could leave. As I was walking out she said, I don't know what she did with her check, She was unnecessary Rude. We have had several lunches as a group there and its always been the same not enough staff. Don't let the exterior deter you! Aaron (my boyfriend) and I went to Uprooted for the first time for lunch today and it was AMAZING!! It has been a long time since I've been this impressed by a restaurant. We went around 1:30pm so it wasn't too busy, and the service was great. We started with the Cauliflower wings. They were delicious! Aaron (who I can rarely get to even look at a vegetable) couldn't stop eating them. I think he was surprised they were so good. For our soup/salad options, I got a side salad with the basil dressing and he got the baked potato soup. The dressing was amazing, I was nervous I wouldn't like it but it was light and had a ton of flavor. The potato soup was also delicious, Aaron pointed out that the potatoes were all different sizes, which indicated to him that it wasn't just some mass produced soup mix. (His words, not mine.) For dinner, I had the Squash Ribbon Portobello bowl and Aaron had the Broasted chicken. Honestly, who knew veggies could taste so good? It was sooooooo good. So good. The presentation was great and the veggies had awesome flavor. I don't eat meat often but I had to try the chicken, and it was absolutely delicious! Aaron loved it as well. The skin was crispy and the meat was "juicy, tender, and flavorful" (Aaron's words). We didn't try any dessert, we were on a time crunch but the dessert shooters looked amazing. This is a decent place. It's not what you read on Yelp. It's a gussied up hall with some fun side things. The meal was ok. The filet was not filet-- it's butt steak. Good, but not the same. The uprooted was covered in sour cream and spinach. Again, kind of fun but the decor was awful-- industrial carpet, Weird runners over tiles and a mismatch of plastic wall hangings. I have come to this restaurant often. However, today will be the last time I dine here. Not only was the service slow, the chicken Marsala that I ordered was disgusting (and that's being kind)!! The chicken sat in fresh looking dishwasher colored water. The chicken was undercooked, the vegetables were hard, and the sauce was flavorless. They offered to remake the sauce and it came back to the table with a strong raw alcohol taste. Fail again!! The manager refused to comp the meal, or any portion of our tables food. The food at this restaurant is very good. The service is good and the staff are pleasant. . The atmosphere could definitely use some sprucing up. All you notice out front is the deck and bar and it's a little hard to find. From the street, you pass it easily. The bar is in front but there's a nice size restaurant in the back. If they did a little remodeling, added more light in front and a more visible sign, I'm sure they would attract even more business. Again, the food is really good. A hidden gem from the outside it looks like an old biker bar and when you walk in the front door the bar looks like a old bar but you turn the corner and you're in a very nice restaurant. Uprooted has become my favorite restaurant to dine at when we visit our daughter in Illinois. Their menu has many choices to make everyone happy. I absolutely love the salad bar that visits your table! You actually get to design your salad! My granddaughter loves the mini desserts as do I because it's just enough after a great meal! The rolling bar cart is always fun too! The bartender has a cute jingle to introduce you to everything on his cart! You definitely need to give this place a try! A Christmas eve dinner among 3 friends: myself and a married couple. My buddy had the prime beef steak. His wife had the orange roughy. I had Chilean Sea Bass, and I have to say when my dish arrived my attention was no longer focused on their choices. Before me sat a plate of delicious fish accompanied by what's called Forbidden Black Rice, Cilantro Lime Slaw and a side of fresh, seasonal vegetables. Along with that was a signature custom-made garden salad that is created table side. The Sea Bass was cooked light, flaky and to perfection. It sat on a bed of unconventional rice with the slaw and veggies surrounding it. Turnips were sprinkled among the vegetables, which I love but hadn't had in a while. I savored them and was thoroughly satisfied. The garden salad served on a cart was a novel idea, and the crumpled blue cheese dressing I selected was a surefire winner. I indulged in a couple cocktails 1) the Stetson Manhattan, as much fun to watch being prepared as it was to sip and 2) Tito's Hibiscus Martini, a colorful drink with an edible floral core that soaks up the flavor and delivers it in a whimsical fashion. The finale to this dining adventure was an array of parfait custard dishes served in dessert vials, available in flavors such as Oreo cookie, key lime, apple pie, cheesecake, carrot cake, heath bar and many more. I didn't know what to expect as far as food quality as the place lacks the elegant façade of a fancy restaurant. Don't be fooled by the exterior. Inside you will find great tasing food well worth the cost. Wish I took pictures. 1st time visit was a great experience even though they are short staffed for the lunch crowd and only seating in the bar was offered. The gentleman working kept up with the demand. I'll be back for dinner when the dinning room is open. Just an FYI.
