I hired this moving company in February 2025 for an April 30th moving date. The team arrived on time, were professional, efficient, and friendly. Unfortunately, right after they left, the couch leg collapsed. I contacted them, and one day later, sent a person who worked very diligently to fix it. He admitted to accidentally breaking it. I said, no problem as long as it's fixed. That couch wasn't even four years old. It's a name brand. However, it broke again on May 28th. Throughout the whole process, I remained polite, professional, and most of all kind and pleasant. Maybe this was my mistake. I sent an email with several pictures, and my contact person said that all communication with us is ended since the insurance company will now handle it. She attached a claim form. But the claim form didn't have a number or the name of the insurance company. I finished the claim form and sent it to them one week later. I requested confirmation of it. Nothing. I sent another email requesting confirmation. Nothing, no reply. Two weeks later, not hearing anything from an insurance company, I sent another email requesting the insurance company's name. Nothing. No response. Even though I had told them that since I injured my back, I worked on that couch. It's how I made my living. Why have they ghosted me? I would NEVER hire them. It is now July. My couch is still broken. They are taking no responsibility whatsoever. read more

The Upstairs Downstate moving team headed up by Danny (extremely professional, hardworking, and personable) facilitated a very smooth transition from our apartment in Westchester County up to Albany. They work in a very systematic fashion; they're very fast and efficient. All the material they used for packing was paper and we feel like our possessions were moved in the best possible way (no old blankets that other movers use, things were handled carefully, and furniture was disassembled and then reassembled carefully and quickly). My communications w the company were transparent. Vincent was very professional and always very responsive. We had a consultation through FaceTime and he gave me a quote based on what I showed him of our home (furniture, etc). There were companies that offered to make the move for less but we were very satisfied with our experience. With Vincent, there were no extra hidden fees and we feel what we paid was in line with the value of such excellent service. The move went very smoothly. I moved this past May and one of the movers broke my industrial sewing machine. Not only did the company take months to respond to my many phone calls and emails to fix my sewing machine WHICH HAS NOT BEEN FULLY FIXED, they are now completely ignoring all calls and emails to resolve this issue. The movers were 3 hours late-- and due to that it delayed my move in time. The movers have attitudes and gave ME an attitude when they broke my machine saying they are going to go take a break even when I told them that the building I am moving into has limited time available to move in. They requested that I tip them well, thinking we were going to have to carry things by the stairs but NO, both my apartments have elevators - but still, I tipped them $400 which I don't think they deserved at all. I used Upstairs Downstairs for an out of state move and was upset when they ruined my bureau and damaged other furniture. The movers took zero responsibility for this action, trying to tell me I must have bought the dresser second hand (which I certainly did not) and that it was already damaged. I showed them the damages on the matching bed and the 'foreman' gave me a dark brown marker to color in the scratches. .... not the answer I was looking for. According to their website and paperwork, the customer is covered by minimal insurance which I tried to make a claim on. I called Vince, the owner of the company, twice to talk about the damages and sent an email but have yet to receive an answer. I am very disappointed in how I have been treated by Upstairs Downstairs and caution anyone out there to not use this company. In addition, these folks expect a 15-20% (of the entire move price!) as standard gratuity which is WAY out of line. I polled four other movers for a reasonable rate and they all thought this was outrageous. However, if you tip Upstairs Downstairs less (which you know I did), they express dissatisfaction .... even after they trashed my expensive furniture! I used Upstairs Downstairs Moving for a recent move from Jersey City to Harlem, and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone moving in the area (I think they do long distance moves, too). I was comparing price quotations from a few companies in JC, when I figured it may be good to reach out to an NYC company, too. I called to set up a time for the manager to come over and give me an estimate for the move. What surprised me most was that he ended up giving me a set cost-- no estimate, no chance for any hidden fees, and the quotation included labor, as well as wardrobe boxes, tape, plastic wrap, etc. His price wasn't the lowest I got, but it wasn't the highest either, and with everything he was including, it seemed like the best bet. On the move day, 4 guys showed up and started packing and moving everything. The speed at which these guys worked was really impressive. They packed up all my odds and ends and had everything in their truck within about 4 hours-- I was really shocked! I met them in the city a few hours later, where they unpacked everything and carried it all up 4 flights of narrow stairs. This includes an entire bedroom set, 3-piece sectional sofa, love seat, 2 wardrobe boxes, one TV stand, one flat screen TV, and tons of odds and ends. They helped me unpack pretty much everything, too, and somehow fit all the belongings of my 750 sq ft apartment in JC into my new 550 sq ft Harlem nook. They did crack a relatively cheap bookcase I bought from Target, but they glued it together and it's not too noticeable now. What was even more impressive was that they actually seemed to be enjoying themselves throughout the day. They were so nice the entire time, and even offered to fix minor things, like wobbly chair legs, that were broken before the move. By the end of the day, they were beat, but were still cracking jokes and laughing. I seemed more exhausted than them! I've never hired movers before and was sort of dreading the experience. However, Upstairs Downstairs Moving made the process super easy and stress-free. Also, there is no passive aggressive pressure to tip them (as I know is common with even small-time movers), but be generous. I think I ended up tipping 15%, and wished I had more $$ on hand that day, because they did a really thorough job and definitely earned it. I will for sure hire them again. read more

I recently moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan, out of a 1BR into a to a small 2BR, 4th floor walk-up, and I had a great experience with Upstairs Downstairs Moving. The guys who did our move were strong (athletic), fast workers, and pleasant to talk to. The stairs to our new apartment are somewhat narrow and steep, but the guys moved everything in quickly. Their truck was very clean inside (I saw a smooth wood floor). And they bagged our mattresses in plastic, which was great. They also brought their own big cardboard boxes (maybe 4-5 ft. tall) that have a hanging rod built into the top, to move the hanging clothes. They moved them out of the old closets into the boxes and then right into the new closets. Sweet. The only drawback was that initially I had trouble getting the owner on the phone, and therefore we didn't get the weekday that we wanted--instead we had to move on the weekend. Maybe this was just coincidence or me calling at the wrong times. Either way, definitely book in advance!! All in all, a good experience. read more

Well, jury is still out. My Sheraton-style couch fr the '20s was badly damaged in my recent move handled by Upstairs/Downstairs. I had taken out additional insurance on several pieces because they are old, valuable and difficult to replace. The hand-carved couch legs were severely damaged to the point the couch is since supported by stacks of books as it would collapse otherwise. 2 insurance adjustors have been to look at the couch independent of each other; one the rudest man I've ever met and the other quite charming. Oddly, their assessments were also completely opposite. So today, I recevied a call fr the Insurance agency saying the adjuster said the couch was irreparable due to 'inheritance vice' which is insurance-speak for pre-exisitng condition. I was quite stunned as the likeable adjustor had said the couch was defintely repairable and even told me what it would cost to repair. Also, the couch had been functioning absolutely fine prior to the move. I am now in conversation with Vincent, the owner of Up/Down who is going to talk to the necessary individuals to get to the bottom of this. Let's see what he's made of. First, I want to say that I'm pretty sure there's only one Upstairs Downstairs Movers; however, all the stuff I have from them has their address as 2073 8th Ave, NY, NY rather than the one shown here on Yelp. That said, they're worth every star I've given. Moving is hell. They make it less so, a lot less. Vince, the owner, came to my place himself to calculate the flat fee. It took him all of 10 minutes to come up with a guaranteed flat fee that was about $150 lower than the next closest estimate (which those movers were quick to point out were only "estimates" and not fixed fees). He answered all my questions, waving away my concerns about where they'd park to load stuff in my neighborhood ("that's our problem"), and anything else I thought of in the next day or two was easily answered by Michelle, their ace on the phone in the office. She kept me updated until and through the move itself, even talking directly to my building super when there were questions about what the building needed by way of proof of insurance (which they have completely) The unusually multi-ethnic moving team arrived promptly (representing Mexico, Egypt, Tibet and Nepal), introduced themselves and set to work quickly and efficiently. At one point, someone in the building complained to the super that the movers were holding up the elevator (despite the fact that there are two elevators and I was moving during the hours allowed). The super got into a small argument with one of the moving guys and told him that he was "banned from the building." When the lead mover got wind of this, he had the mover who'd had the argument seek out the super to apologize. They shook hands and the move went on apace. I mention this because I often feel that what's important isn't that one makes mistakes or screw-ups -- we all do -- but rather how one follows up to make things right. Alex, the lead mover, demonstrated real character and poise in dealing with this very minor issue. They kept me informed about everything they were doing throughout the move, including a discussion of whether my very old IKEA trundle bed that had to come apart to fit through the door would survive the move given its poor condition (damn that IKEA particle board!). It did, and Alex made sure he was the one re-assembling it. They gave me their thoughts on where stuff should go ("put the TV against that wall because the afternoon sun won't hit it on that side"), picked up after themselves, removed all extraneous packing material and made sure that I was happy with everything before they left. Here's the thing. These are genuinely good people making the most of what can't be the most exciting job in the world. I don't know what Vince pays them or how he keeps them motivated, but they were fun to be around (to the extent anything's fun in a move) and worked very hard, fast and with great integrity. There's just no contest here. This is nuts. Who writes a review this long for a moving company? That's how impressed I am. read more

We are using Upstairs Downstairs for a 2 part move: i) packing & moving contents of 3 brs into storage; ii) moving from storage to our new place & unpacking. Only the first part has been completed...so this review is for the first part. Can't say enough good things about this company - they are FANTASTIC!! - Responsive: the first of four companies we contacted to get back to us & scheduled a visit on Saturday morning. - On the spot binding quote: Mark efficiently went through every room (and outdoor space) and spent ten mins compiling the binding quote there and then! Another company took all day to respond & another had me fill out a long online form which spit out an exorbitant quote. We were able to sell some furniture prior to the move so they dropped the price slightly which I appreciated. These guys weren't the cheapest but the minimal difference was well worth the extra bucks!! - Super speedy packing & accommodating crew: Alex and his crew arrived early the day before the move to pack everything. At my request, they agreed to leave the bed & bathroom contents unpacked so we could sleep in our own bed one last time...which I really appreciated! I was still finishing up packing clothing & other stuff needed for the few weeks between places when they arrived...the guys were done packing the living room, kitchen, guest br & office in the time it took me to pack my own things, lol! They'd ask questions or point out nicks on furniture prior to packing & used their judgement on stuff not to pack. - Accommodating extra drop-offs & storage facility need: they didn't charge extra for dropping off several boxes at Housing Works on the UWS and a wine fridge at a friend's place before heading to storage. I'd wanted to go to the storage facility with them to make sure it was climate controlled & to see where they were putting stuff in case we need to access before moving into our new place. Alex advised their storage facility in Yonkers didn't allow clients on site due to insurance only covering worker access. I spoke to Michelle who could tell how stressed I was about now having to find an alternate self storage place. Ten mins later she called back to say they had made arrangements with a place they use for overflow & she'd send us the address so we could meet the guys there after lunch. I REALLY appreciated this extra effort & proactive approach to accommodating my specific need to be able to see where my stuff was going. Again they didn't tack on an extra charge for not using the location they'd originally planned on...its little things like this that instantly reduce stress and which I will remember whenever I think of this company. Plus Michelle has a very calming soothing voice which helps lower rising blood pressure levels too :) Don't even think twice - use this company! Their pricing is competitive, they're extremely efficient, their movers have experience...they're not just hired hands to do some heavy lifting...best of all, the guys were friendly but super professional! Move was decent (just one art piece bit broken, couple things put back together wrong). Big problem was the price surprise - the actual guys doing the moving demanded more money at end, saying 20% was what they always get. On an already big bill this is a lot! I initially tipped more than $40 a guy per day, where the day was about 6 and a half hours with an hour lunch break. Like I said, they repeatedly demanded more at the end. So.... only use if you're willing to add 20% to your quote. Job done was fine, I just don't like surprises, and this level of tip for movers, and the fact he was making it seem regardless of the job they do, was a downer. read more

I had to fly into town to move my elderly father from his apartment on the Les to an assisted living facility in Long island. Recently hired these guys to move a bunch of rather heavy boxes, crates and tubs into a storage unit. They were prompt, did the job way faster than I thought humanly possible, and weren't rough with my belonging. One of the gentlemen attempted to carry two milk crates of compact discs behind his back and spilled the contents of both on the floor. A couple of cracked cases. No big deal. We left separately for my storage facility and both managed to arrive at nearly the same time. They unloaded the truck rather quickly, and got everything stored neatly. The downside to leaving this review is that I don't plan on going back to that storage unit for a few months, so I won't be inspecting my belongings for damage any time soon. But honestly, most of that stuff was weighing me down so if any of it is broken, I won't be *too* heartbroken to be forced to live without it. That's why it's all in storage, anyway. read more

We had used Upstairs Downstairs on two previous occasions (seven and fourteen years ago) and thought they were superb. Our last move in February of this year was unfortunately quite a disaster. This time, because my wife and I are now in our 70s and less physically able to lift our belongings, we had the the men from Upstairs Downstairs packs most of our of our stuff, including my computer. Huge mistake! Five men showed up before the day of our move and very hurriedly, tripping over each other, very carelessly packed everything we had not moved ourselves to our new apartment. I had left my heavy desktop computer for them to pack, as well as some personal items on my desktop. When the next day our stuff was moved to the new address one of the first things I unpacked in my study was the computer which was properly labeled "Bob's study, computer" and properly placed in my study. I opened the box and the computer was there, but not the keyboard, backup drive or trackball mouse, nor any of the other items on my desktop. I opened all the other boxes in my study in search of the peripherals and other desktop items. They were nowhere to be found. I looked throughout the apartment to see if there were other boxes labelled "Bob's study" but could not find any. I called Vincent, the owner, and he told me not to worry the stuff would turn up. But I needed to get online in order to pay bills etc. and I was very concerned that my backup drive including our personal information and passwords was missing. I frantically searched the apartment once again. No sign of the missing items. Yes, Vincent was correct. I did find the missing items two weeks latter after unpacking more than fifty boxes of books in my wife's study. The missing items were at the bottom of a large stack of book boxes in her study, mislabeled in one of the last three boxes we opened! (Meanwhile I had replaced all of the missing items that could be replaced at a cost of over $400, and tediously changed all the passwords to our banks and other financially sensitive sites, using my laptop). There were half a dozen other problems caused by the movers' haste and carelessness. The most serious of which were: several missing pieces of hardware for two file cabinets, an improperly reassembled and wobbling TV stand with a missing leg (never to be found) and a short circuit caused by a metal piece from one of our lamps that had fallen into the light bulb socket. Fortunately, the short circuit tripped the living room circuit breaker as I screwed in the bulb. The bid was a low one, but the haste and carelessness of this team of movers caused us both a great deal of anxiety about our financial information being lost or stolen, as well the need to replace pieces of missing hardware. Not to mention the flying sparks when I screwed in a light bulb! This moving company has deteriorated badly. read more

Upstairs Downstairs Moving was recommended to me. I still called a handful of other moving companies to compare different offers, but I ultimately chose Upstairs Downstairs Moving. I called over a month prior to my intended move date and also told them my move date was flexible. I was told my intended move date wasn't an issue. We moved forward and they provided my apartment building with a certificate of insurance. (I did have to prod them to get my building the COI.) One week prior to my move, I received a voicemail from Michelle stating my move was canceled - the freight company they work with is experiencing an issue with their business license. I was told by Michelle that she'd try to follow up with me in an email before leaving the office and that she'd try calling me again - neither an email nor a follow-up phone call materialized. There are other reviews out there that talk about Upstairs Downstairs Moving canceling on clients - believe those reviews. You don't want to be scrambling to find a moving company that can accommodate your move at the last minute, especially when you have to vacate an apartment. (My once flexible move became set in stone once I gave notice to my building.) You're forced to settle for whichever other moving company is available and you're going to pay a hefty sum for a last-minute move. read more

These guys are absolutely wonderful. Professional, quick, thorough, and careful. I have moved seven time in 15 years, and never before have I had such an easy time moving. I found this company on a recommendation from my cousin. We used Ben Hur last time (three years ago,) and although they gave a great price, they damaged many pieces of our furniture (they paid us about half of the damage because of a deductible on their insurance.) These guys didn't damage a thing. They packed up my kitchen, but we packed the rest. They said they could pack everything, but we had to keep the price down. I had developed a way to inventory and store everything - but the process would be lengthy and cumbersome for anyone! This phenomenal team worked with me in a very systematic way to create a numbered inventory that would correspond to a set of numbered boxes. They treated these items with the utmost care and respect and delivered all boxes in perfect condition. Once at the warehouse, they unloaded and stored all the numbered boxes in order (no easy feat....there were 375 boxes!). I just moved my 90 year old mother from Battery Park to Kips Bay. I heard great things about Upstairs Downstairs Moving (UDM) so I decided to go with them. What a great decision! Let's start with their office...Michelle was so incredibly responsive, helpful and sweet. She sent over Mark to appraise the cost of the move...so nice and thorough and provided a quote immediately. The moving team were incredible...they were on time for both the move out and move in. The foreman, Danny, made sure he was in touch with me every step of the way. When I texted him, Danny got back to me right away. Everything was packed up securely, professionally and quickly. Danny is such a great guy and a caring professional.
