Went to Upstar Auto after a friend recommended me to Mr. He. I had some major issues with my vehicle including a leaking radiator, a completely busted rack & pinion and some ancillary repairs needed. At first impression, Mr. He is a bit excitable but he walked me through the process and allowed me to source my own parts since I wanted to use an OEM part for the Rack and Pinion. Toyota happen to have the parts on sale. I also ended up getting an oil change and a transmission fluid change. Will be coming back again in the future for my car needs. Don't take your car here. My Honda overheated and he claimed it was the engine and suggested I replace it for $3000. If I didn't wanted to fix it then he offered to buy my car for $1000. I usually come here for maintenance stuff, like oil change. But you might have to reconsider going elsewhere if you need serious repairs, especially if you don't know what's wrong with your car. After doing some research, I suspected my Honda Civic needed a new motor mount, but I came to Upstar and they told me that everything was fine with my car, even though I insisted that my car was making abnormal noises and I mentioned that worn out motor mounts may be the cause. Turns out that I was right, because I took my car over to Yu's Auto Service in El Monte (they charge a lot, but they definitely know what they're doing, been going there for 10+ years) and they found out right away that I had a worn out motor mount. Also, my relative's car broke down three times, and all three times, she went to Upstar, but they were unable to find anything wrong. She went to Yu's Auto Service instead and they figured out the problem right away. So, Upstar may be cheaper than a lot of other places, but sometimes they may not be the best for repairs. I suggest taking your car there first to see if they can figure out what's wrong, but if they can't find anything, it's time to go elsewhere for a second opinion. read more

Upstar is my go to place to get basic maintenance and repairs done. Oil changes, brake pads, replace starter or ball joint, they've done it all. And for fair prices. Waiting room has a nice tv and coffee machine but other than that, kind of sparse. Sometimes the wait to get your car done can be a bit long, also this place is NOT lowered-car friendly. The manager once told me they wouldn't work on my car because it was lowered and they had just paid someone for damage they accidentally caused to a lowered car. This is my FIRST Yelp review. I've been using Yelp for years and have never felt compelled enough to write a review until my brief encounter with Upstar. Today, I needed to purchase and replace 1 rear tire. I called Upstar at 12:34pm to ask if they had my size in stock. The owner said they did and told me the price, so I said "great, I will come now." He said, "okay...but just remember we close at 1p." I said "no problem, I'm literally up the street and will be there in a few mins." I pull into Upstar at 12:38pm. As I walked up the driveway, the owner I talked to walked out and immediately addressed me with a curt and dismissive attitude. Without greeting me or asking what i needed, he just yelled "we're closing at 1! No more, we can't take you" as he headed to his back office. Completely confused, i said "sir i was the one that just called you, i just need 1 tire replaced." He responded with "My guys are already washing their hands, we're done." After reminding him I just needed one tire, he rudely said "FINE. Hurry up and fill out the paperwork in the office." Normally I would have just thought "f**k this" and walked out right there. But because I was running on a spare tire on a Sunday with few options, I grit my teeth and walked in. When i got to the counter, the guy literally tossed the clipboard at me and said "hurry!" with such an impatient a-hole attitude. I then said, "sir, why are you treating me like this? I literally just called you and you said I could come in." Then he said "yea but we close at 1pm!" I reminded him that I was literally up the street and came within minutes. To that, he responded "everyone always said they're just 'a few minutes away'", imitating me in a higher voice with an eye roll. After that point, I put down the pen and said forget it, I'm not giving him the business. After which he dismissively waved me out and said "yea yea yea." I understand that service businesses find it annoying when people come close to closing time but I called ahead, he said i could come, and then he rudely dismissed me when i arrived (totally unprompted and out of nowhere). Our neighborhood auto shop gives a fair price and reliable service. We bring our Honda Accord and Kia Optima here for oil changes and other routine service. It cost between $25-$35 for an oil change. I once brought my parent's VW beetle here as well when it broke down and they took care of it fairly quickly and with a good price. They tell it like it is and make constructive recommendations. They'll give you options with their professional opinions allowing you to choose the path of service you'd like to go with. OEM and generic parts are offered to you prior to agreeing to servicing your vehicle. Finally, they'll keep you abreast of the service status of your vehicle with an accurate estimation of when you can expect to retrieve your vehicle. Horrible customer service. Called in for pricing on their oil change, and asked specifically how much it was for the cheapest option, to compare with other auto shops. Guy started to get louder as he told me I couldn't find any cheaper price around and that "i was out of my mind" when i said there were cheaper places. Then he just hung up while i was asking if i could stop by right away to get it done as I didn't have time. I made the mistake of heading over, and I walked into the office to find the guy and everyone else on lunch break, which he didn't mention they were on over phone. He told me in a condescending tone to come back in 45, expecting me to wait even after knowingly hanging up on me. I wouldn't expect these guys to do good work based on their attitude. Freeman is the name. The name of a man that will make your troubles go away. That annoying squeaky sound that you cannot identify? The troubled overheating meter? Side skirts scratching at the tread of your tire? All of this.. GONE. I was recommended here by my dad a few years back & have been coming here ever since. Let's talk about my most recent experience: My car has been doing some crazy squeaking whenever I braked so I assumed it would be my brake pads. I rushed here after work a little after 6pm (their closing time). They were nice enough to tell me to leave my car and it will be done by tomorrow. Brakes pads here for my '97 civic were $90 oem & $70 generic. Very reasonable pricing. The next day, I got a call from them. They discovered that it wasn't my brake pads, but mainly because my dropped car was hitting uneven roads & was now leaking brake fluid! Now that's a biggy. Overall, they charged me $100 to change that out and to flip my tires. To their word, my car was done by the time I got there. They usually do complimentary work for you so your car runs well instead of charging you for every little thing like other places. I bet if I took it to any other places, they would have charged me to change my brake pads AND fix the leaking brake fluid. Very honest people here and able to communicate in fluent English, Cantonese & Mandarin (maybe other languages too, but not sure). Oh, I also got a complimentary flashlight key chain & air freshener. My transmission died recently and the shop was able to get me an authentic OEM BMW transmission immediately from the dealer. They must have some relationship with dealers around the area because parts are always available. My turnaround for the transmission job was about a day, which is normal. They don't skimp on anything! All parts down to the gaskets were directly OEM BMW parts. How do I know, i saw the plastic wrappers from the dealer. It's not easy finding a reliable and inexpensive automotive shop in the area that does European cars without forking out an arm and a leg. I'm so happy I found a reliable and trustworthy shop where I can just drop off my car and know that it'll be well respected and taken care of. It also appears that they have a parts department on the premise for minor parts and high quality European motor oils and filters. read more

I got my brakes replaced here last week. The price is fair and the wait is not bad assuming that you don't come here on Saturdays. This shop is open on Sunday which fits my schedule. Overall, i like the way the business is conducted here. No upsell and the owner is upfront and honest about things that "you don't need to fix". Whereas other shops are more than willing to charge and overcharge whenever they can. So i definitely give them credit in this area. The shops is a little older and there are many old junky cars here for sale. The shop area also looks a little dirty. I think they should get rid all of these junks, clean up and expand the shop to service more customers. That's why i knock one star here. I see mostly older cars here for maintenance but i do see some newer cars too. I will come again next time for my other cars. I haven't tested them with harder tasks (e.g. timing belt, transmission replacement, etc). but when i do i will post the results here as well. My neighbor told me that the owner, Mr. Ho, is very honest 20 years ago. Since then, I have brought my cars or minivan to this shop for the service. This place is over 30 miles from my home. Usually I do not come to this shop for a small maintenance like oil change unless I come to San Gabriel area for Chinese food or Massage. I did bring the cars for 15,000 miles and 30,000 miles maintenance, brake repair, timing belt and some other bigger problems. For a bigger maintenance, It might take 2-4 hours. Mr. Ho recommended excellent movies for me to watch in the shop while I was waiting. For the problem they could not do themselves, Mr. Ho brought the car to some other sister shop to get it fixed for me there. Got a flat tire on Friday. I ran over something and it put a dime-size hole in my sidewall. It's a pretty new car so I wanted the replacement tire to be the same as the others. I called all around, even Hankook Tire dealers and I found one that could get the tire for $183 but I'd have to wait until Wednesday. Called Freeman, he said he could get it the next day at 1 PM and the price would be $159. I got the exact tire I wanted, cheaper and faster from Freeman than any other tire shop in the area. And it took 45 minutes. I've had tires patched there too, never had a problem with them. And it's $10. I think Upstar is the place to buy one or two tires. Of course if you need a full set of tires then Costco is always the place to go, and watch for sales. read more

Some people get a bad rap. Politicians, Car Salesmen, Mechanics...etc. Not all are bad, but finding a honest person now a days to do anything for you is a rarity. I've been patronizing Upstar for over 15 years now and have really no complaints whatsoever! I know, you need to call them to find out if your car is ready..blah, blah, blah. Their "customer" service is lacking a bit, but again, I would rather take honesty over expediency any day! I owned a '95 4 Runner and thought my transmission was going out, I took it to Upstar and talked to Freeman about it. It took about a day and it was only my mounts that needed to be replaced, only $150! If I would have taken it elsewhere, I could have been ripped off by them saying that it was my transmission! Brought my own ceramic pads for front and rear brakes, had them replace the brake pads and oil change for my '05 Infiniti G35. $104, dealer would've jammed me for triple! If you want customer service and are willing to pay for it, take your car to the dealer and get soaked! My Chinese friends here at Upstar can take care of my car any day! read more

WOW! I WOULD GIVE THEM 10 STARS IF THIS ALOUD. If you have time... let me tell you a short story.... My front left tire was making a noise. I went to three place for advise. Goodyear tire, Meineke, and my own dealership. Each place quoted me over $2000 worth of repairs... BUT THEY EACH THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS SOMETHING DIFFERENT! Imagine how upset I was thinking all these experts could not determine my problem, but somehow each one had quoted me over $2000 in repairs !?!?! I later went to Upstar Auto (2435 San Gabriel Blvd Rosemead, CA 91770). Small and not name brand but highly recommended on YELP. These guys are SO TRUSTWORTHY and SO CHEAP! THey will tell you the truth and whether or not you even need repair. Upstar Auto told me repairs MIGHT cost around $500 to $600 and would inspect my car for FREE! They first advised me the problem was minor and only would cause tire wear. I insisted I wanted it fixed because it bothered me personally. After I left my car with them for the day, they discovered only a few bolts needed replacement and ONLY CHARGED ME $60 ! Let me remind you. Both Meineke in Pasadena, my own dealership, and Goodyear Tire tried to quote me over $2000 each for ALL DIFFERENT PROBLEMS. Each place had a DIFFERENCE DIAGNOSES for my car! If it wasn't for Upstar, I would be broke and right where I started. If you can bare yourself to move away from name brand auto repair/tire companies, you will find yourself a new world of cheap and honest repair men. WE HAVE THE INTERNET PEOPLE, COME ON! I've been to other places in the area and they just bombard you with "You need this and you need that" although clearly not everything needs to be at 100% for the rest of the car's life. Upstar mechanics will tell you if you do not need something just yet but will only tell you about it. If you want to get it fixed, then go ahead. Just stoped to go this place for my car maintenance although I had used their services for many years due to the low price. I am still frustrated when they deal with the major maintenance job such as timing belt or engine cooler. 5 years ago, I had them to replace my 1993 Honda Accord Engine cooler and the water pump, the car was found leaking. Few months ago, I had them to replace the timing belt for my 2005 Camry V6, I found the car leaking and had them to check it but they could not find what was broken. I had to go anther auto shop to diagnosis the problem. It was an improperly timing belt install... I am so frustrated that I had to go back to the same shop for many times every time when they do the major maintenance. Boss Ho did not hire qualified mechanical for their jobs!!! read more

When I ask him to check on certain things about my car, he checked and was honest and sincere what needed fixing or not, he doesnt try and cheat you to fixing anything that doesn't need to be fixed.
