My fiancé and I live downtown and we realized we hadn't tried this restaurant before. We walked in and the atmosphere was very elegant. I was a little worried about our seating arrangement as we were sat in a small two person table in the middle of the smaller room with two booth sections to our left and right. It felt very strange but you quickly get settled as the staff are very professional and makes the occasion feel intimate. I ordered the falafel pita wrap and it was incredible. I've never had falafel that wasn't crumbly and my dish was perfect. The falafel held together and was the perfect amount of filling! My fiancé had the guacamole burger served medium rare, he said he'd never had a burger like that before and the flavor was very intense in a good way. The food was great and the atmosphere was nice. I've never really been blown away by any of their food or service and it wasn't until my last visit that I finally decided I don't ever need to go back. The night started off wanting to try two other restaurants that ended up being busy, so out of desperation we ventured into the Upstream. It's a little too big and crowded for my personal taste but it can accommodate any party big or small - but don't waste your time. Our server was crazy rude, when my friend asked the server if they carried Boulevard Wheat Beer his response was "We're a brewery!" - throwing us off guard by the rudeness our response was "Can you suggest something comparable?" We got our drinks and ordered our entrees - getting horrible attitude from the server. We aren't a picky or needy group so I don't know what the problem was. I told him twice my soda was flat before finally he barks to me "I heard you, we're taking care of it!" How did he ever pass the "personality" test they make you take when you apply for a job there? We decided to kill him with kindness and not let the attitude ruin our meal. ... unfortunately the meal was horrible. I ordered a cheese burger that tasted spoiled. Nothing about my meal was good -- and it was a cheeseburger meal!? I could have hit up the dollar menu at McDonalds and saved myself 10$. My friends meals weren't anything the rave about either. The menu isn't very authentic or creative in the first place and after my horrible experience during my last visit I think it's safe to say there are plenty of other great Omaha establishments I can visit to get many of the same items on their menu. Upstream is consistently good and has been for well over a decade. Come here when you have a hankering for good beer, good food in a lively atmosphere. Their happy hour might be the best time to go -- $3.30 pints, discounts on apps, plus its not too busy (although it still is busy -- this place always seems to be busy). As Mike S mentioned to me a while ago, Upstream's Flagship IPA is probably the best locally-produced IPA. Agreed. It's hoppy, but not too hoppy. Bitter, but not too-bitter. Almost like the tame IPAs of the East Coast and the wild hops from the West Coast found a balanced middle ground right here in flyover country. So yeah this place get's busy, but it's an Omaha staple with good food and a micro brewery producing some interesting beers. Try their IPA, especially during happy hour. read more

My two favorites at Upstream: Jambalaya and rootbeer. Their burgers are delicious, too. Bathrooms are always clean and some times there is a wait to be seated, like at peak times. Time and time again. Delicious food. We've eaten here several times in the last few years. Great service and the food is always delicious. The last time I was there they switched the shrimp used in the jambalaya to smaller shrimp. :( I figured they probably ran out of the large ones? Who knows. It won't keep me from returning. Looks like I'm the only negative yelp-Nancy for this place. The service? Meh. Waiter truly hated my group. Or maybe just life? Asked him about beers and he said he didn't drink. I don't care if you do or don't drink, but I expect you to know something about the beers since it's your job. The food? Super-duper meh. As in none of us finished our food. And that's just not my style. The beers? Slight meh. The raspberry was ok-ish. The pale ale was also just ok. Next time in Omaha I won't be returning unless I have to. Particularly if you're going to spend anytime upstairs in the evening playing pool, be prepared to deal with the Loft and Trust Fund of Omaha Club, those Creighton University students whose parents bought them a downtown condo because they got kicked out the dorms for doing blow and doing cookies in the parking lot with their Ferrari. The beer here is good, and they run seasonal selections. Try the barley wine if they have some in stock. As you can tell from reading other reviews, the food is seriously hit or miss. Upstream had so much promise! A great location, nice beers, and the perfect patio seating in the summer but, I'm sorry, it's really not that good and the servers leave a lot to be desired. I've eaten a few basic things: a BBQ bacon cheddar burger, the blackened burger with guacamole and pepperjack cheese, and their margherita pizza. It's not that the food is bad per se, it's just not great. Take the burgers, for example, they're made with quality beef but the flavors are just not right (guacamole needs some lime!). For a similar price and a much better burger, I'd recommend the Tap House a few blocks away. The pizza crust is too thin, almost like a cracker and I prefer thinner-crusted pizzas. Anyway, the food is mediocre for the price and there's a lot better around the Market. One time we were here on a Saturday afternoon and we literally had no server. A bartender eventually took our order and a food runner eventually brought out our burgers but we never got a refill or a "how are things?" check in as we had NO SERVER. How does that happen? The hostess told us that the bartender was *technically* the server but this is a bar-restaurant...he's clearly too busy as a bartender to be a server as well. You've had your chances, Upstream. I refuse to travel and not taste the fine beers of the area, therefore I had to visit upstream when I was in the middle of NOWHERE. First thing - their menu, 5 HUGE STARS from me. Why? Because on the bottom of the menu they say something about how they understand how difficult it is to live with food allergies and that the chef's will specially prepare anything for you. LOVE THAT! Thank you. Other restaurants - please, TAKE A HINT. If the frickin midwest can be proactive, so can you. (No offense to the midwest... I used to live there) See bottom of review for exact wording. Second - YUM for the beers. They have a great variety. One of every kind I think, plus some cask conditioned ales (which were amazing). I also like that they put many "beer blends" on the menu. Like, Black and Tans or Raspberry Wheat or Hoppy Marriage. These are the kind of things I expect from a brewery and they delivered. Other things to note - This place is HUGE. The place was pretty crowded but we got a seat right away. The food is decent. Nothing compares to San Francisco cuisine which I am used to. It's a step up from a typical brewery but still a few steps behind an SF brewery. All in all, I would highly recommend this place to any beer lover. Located in a really great part of downtown Omaha, NE in a really cool building with TVs, a variety of foods and cold brews - so what's not to like? While the beer was good, the 'special' menu we received was a mess; They described two 'Ribeye Specials' - one for $20 and one for $30. Wellll....the ribeyes were good (not great) - but the kicker came when the bill came and the 'Ribeye Specials' were really $29 and $39 (not such a great deal). The Upstream Brewing company is one of Omaha's most over rated restaurants. I have been there three times. I only ate there twice. One time we left because we called ahead with a party of 10 and it took them over an hour to find a table. They forgot about us and we finally left. Their food is over priced and sounds good on the menu, however, the actual item is disappointing. They have a big staff but they always seem to be in crisis mode. The food was cold and took forever. I would not go back. 3 bad experiences out of 3 visits is enough for me. To be fair I did not have the beer. But if your hungry and want a great meal, drive 5 minutes away and go to Piccolos Petes on south 20th street. Upstream: two thumbs down. read more

This is actually only half of a review, since I visited this brewery and didn't actually have a beer :-/ We visited the Upstream for lunch on a weekday, and were treated to excellent service and some pretty good grub. This restaurant/brewery, a converted fire station in the heart of Omaha's Old Market district, is a huge old place. There's a bar area, spacious dining room, and another bar/pool hall/banquet space upstairs (closed when we were there). I ordered the special of the day, which was grilled cod with rice pilaf and sauteed green beans. Terrific! Of course, our our waitress helped to make our visit an above-average dining experience too: friendly, attentive, and kept the refills coming while we awaited a member of our party. This is one of my favorite eating establishments in the Old Market. Their foods are delicious and they have a great selection of micro brews and good info about them available. They did have pool tables that you could rent by the hour, but they have either reduced the number of them or removed them entirely for more table space. I really enjoy Upstream. Went today for a little holiday lunch with my leaders. Very attentive, courteous service, orders came out quick and right and everyone enjoyed the food. I had an 8 oz filet (without the sauce they serve on it) and it was every bit as delicious as Sullivan's. Special was a bacon wrapped Haddock that the table raved about. Add to that the great beer selection (no one went back to work!) and it's really a very pleasant lunch. I can say that o enjoy the Old Market location much more than the one out West. read more

I tried Upstream about three years ago and wasn't particularly impressed then, so my husband and I decided to give it another chance this past weekend. We got there about 6:40 on a Saturday night, in the Old Market, so I expected to have to wait a bit. The hostess told us about 20-30 minutes. Not a big deal. 45 minutes later we were finally walked upstairs to our table. (The restaurant has two levels and tons of seating) We were seated and then waited another 15 minutes for our waiter to even come over and acknowledge us. At this point, I was not happy. When we were brought upstairs there was plenty of seating available. Not sure why we waited so long. I did give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were understaffed. At least I hope so, at this point I was not pleased with the service. Once we finally ordered our drinks, that took another 10-15 minutes. There is a bar upstairs AND downstairs. It should not have taken this long, especially when we saw our waiter just standing there. I ordered the beer sampler and tried four different beers. If you like choices when it comes to your draft beer, this is the place to go. We ordered the Calamari for our appetizer and that was amazing! I ordered the Blonde flatbread pizza. My server suggested I try it with blackened chicken and I went with it. IT WAS SOOO GOOD!!! Excellent pairing! My husband got the jambalaya and he liked it. Thank goodness the food made up for the slow and unorganized service. I would possibly go back for just the pizza because it really was amazing. But I don't know If it's worth it to put up with the service. The food is average, prices are decent, and you have a good selection of drinks. Nothing that really makes it stand out in the Old Market. There are so many better options! read more

I always make sure to visit upstream in the Old Market every time I'm in Omaha. Their Gouda beer cheese soup is definitely on my last meal list- a MUST get. This is a regular lunch spot for my office, and I always enjoy it. It's never amazing, but it IS always consistent. The food is good, if unremarkable and a bit pricey, and their beer is solid. Their regular offerings are good (but like the food, nothing special), but some of their seasonal and limited beers are truly excellent. If you're going, be sure to come in for happy hour; the deals are great, and make for one of the best bargains in downtown Omaha. The best part about the Upstream Brewing Company is stated in the title. Brewing Company. Nebraska has very few commercial/small batch breweries and in my opinion, Upstream is currently the top one on the list. The brew, combined with two unique restaurants, top notch food, and spot on service are the reason Upstream is a place I visit often. As M.C. Hammer would say "Break-It-Down!" The space (Legacy Location) First of all, this place is huge! There is main floor dining with a bar area, upstairs dining with another bar area, along with several rooms on this level that are available for private parties. Add on top of that a basement that has another large area available for rent and you have yourself a serious restaurant. Seating is available in booths and tables with the tables set up so that they can easily be put together for large parties. Old Market: Think old brick building, exposed beams, wood floors, etc... Everything you would expect for a former warehouse district. Not quite as much space as the Legacy location but still has the flexibility for large and private parties. Both locations offer billiards, but the Legacy location has only one table (that I know of.) The Beer: As I mentioned above, Nebraska as a whole only has a handful of breweries (Empyrean Ales, Nebraska Brewing Company, Thunderhead, Lucky Bucket (new,) and Spilker Ales to name a few.) Upstream offers variety just like the other brewers but their beer in my opinion is the top dog. Why??? Why ask Why? People enjoy certain beers "just because." This place just happens to be my top pick. It is like wine samples... Why is the $40 bottle better than the $9 bottle? All a personal opinion. Food: Upstream offers a wide variety of food on their menu from Steaks to Pizza. All of the food has a gourmet touch to it (and that is reflected in the price a bit.) I have yet to find a dish I was unsatisfied with (and I have tried a bunch.) Personal favorites include, Artichoke-Asiago Cheese dip (appetizer or meal (waaay better than your typical spinach artichoke dip,)) Smoked Gouda and Blonde Ale Soup, Reuben Sandwich (homemade 1000 island dressing is out of this world,) Fish And Chips (homemade tartar sauce is amazing.) Order a pub salad to try one of their house made dressings too. Don't be afraid to try their daily specials. They seem to come up with some interesting food combinations. All of the specials are done well and priced nice. Service: At Upstream they tend to run a heavy staff and it shows in the service. Drinks and food arrive in a timely manner. Even better is that empty plates are taken away quickly and drinks are refilled without asking. The wait staff is large so it is unlikely you will get the same server each time. Despite that, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the beer. Tips: Check out their weekly specials when you stop in. They seem to have some budget friendly days to eat and drink (like Pizza and Pint night on Wednesdays.) Take beer to go. Upstream does sell growlers of their beer to go. They even have a small refrigerator stocked up so you can grab and go (small "deposit" for first time growler buyers.) They have a growler club. Buy enough beer from them and get a free growler. Conclusion: If you want some nice upscale "pub grub" with great beer this is your place. If you want a great steak and some higher end food (along with great beer or wine) this is your place. Supreme location in old town with an inviting atmosphere to go and have a hand crafted beer and shoot some pool mingle with new faces or old friends. I started off my excursion with litwit, which is a lemon influenced beer, I don't know that much about beer but it was tasty and refreshing. I glanced over the menu which is one page easy-to-read and excited for the meal I was getting ready to partake in. When I'm traveling on business I always ask my server, what are your top three sellers? My server was a little reluctant to volunteer his opinion without cajoling. he recommended the ribeye which was on the menu, the Porkchop which he said was delicious and his personal favorite was the ribeye special (not on the menu). I personlly love a ribeye so it's not very hard to pull or twist my arm. He mentioned it (ribeye) had some sides, it was different than the ribeye that was on the menu I really didn't understand but I just went with it. Boy did I make a huge mistake! The steak had melted velvita cheese and green onions on the top. I asked the runner, you know the guy who brings out the meal, wasn't the topping supposed to be on the side? He offered to get me another steak, Being a conscious person I didn't want to return probably a perfectly good looking steak that just had some nacho cheese on the top so I decided to jump in with fork and knife. I tried to cut and saw into the rawhide mass perhaps it was frozen and thawed out? The waiter asked me, "is your steak excellent?" He must've been coached by someone from the Gallup group. I told him that was less than okay, he carried on like he couldn't hear me and walked away. The food was less than marginal for a $30 entry. It was the most expensive entrée on or off the menu. I cut my losses left the restaurant and went back to my hotel the Hilton and ordered room service, the Ruben it was excellent! read more

The beer is fantastic - world class by any definition, and they have a healthy number of Great American Beer Fest awards to prove it. I even brought a growler (half gallon) home last time just to prove to the locals that there is good beer in Nebraska (but my wife and I ended up drinking it before we could share). The food was pretty lackluster - overglorified TGI Friday's fare. The Jambalaya was fair and extremely oversized, and a colleague's salad was, well, salad. Every time we fly into Omaha we usually stop here on the way in or out, or both, because, as I'm sure a whole buttload of other people have already said, the gouda & beer soup is worth it. I usually only order that soup, and often times I order two because so what, I like it. I also like their jambalaya and I think that's probably worth the trip, as well as a loaf of some of their fresh baked breads, which are always so delectable; I think last time we got a loaf of white chocolate bourbon bread (%*@!) which was amazing. I did order a burger here once and it was pretty good, though nothing really notable about it, just a typical burger. I also tried the Thai salad on another occasion but it turns out I actually really don't like fruit in salads so I didn't like that. Not allergy friendly at all! When I notified them of my dairy allergy, instead of letting me know that my entree had dairy in it, they brought me my sandwich without the bun. Instead of offering alternatives to different entrees after complaining, they simply said they "couldn't do it" instead of offering a different side or to cook the meat in oil instead of butter. Solid beer all around. They don't have any darks or sours on tap because I showed up at the start of summer. So the cask ale is absolutely Killer. I have never had hand pumped ale. The cask ale is a version of the their flagship IPA that comes out of the Ye olde hand pump. The beer is kept at cellar temp, so for those of you who like cold watery beer this is not for you, or maybe it is. The pump forces beer through a nozzle which aerates it and creates our favorite bubbly beverage. The beer is warmer but not warm, maybe room temp or just below. But the flavors are killer The kitchen closes at 12 so all I got was the pizza. I'm not blown away but it did the trick after a long drive to Omaha. I tried almost all the beer. They have a nitro on tap which is pretty good and I thought the Amber I had was also pretty good. Overall I would definitely come back. Also the beer is pretty well priced and the full bar has a good selection for non beer drinkers. read more

Very cool place. I believe the downtown location is in an old firehouse. Down in the old market, it has a lot of character. The beer is great and the food is always pretty good as well. They have a wide selection of food from fish and chips to ribeyes. They always have a daily special (something not on the normal menu). Even their pizzas are pretty good. Apparently the head brewmaster is going to open Lucky Bucket Brewing attached to the Upstream. Although it will be a separate business from the Upstream, I'm excited to see what happens... Kind of pricey. Expect to spend $50 for two without tip or alcohol. That's of course with dessert... They have some rockin bread pudding. read more

You'd think this place was in LA with the amount of attitude some of the employees have. I also love the cheeseball, BK drive-thru headsets the hosts wear as they strut around this place. CLASS. Our waitress was a hungover zombie who threw a napkin on the table when she made a mess she couldn't reach (THANKS!). I'm used to service that's quite unpolished especially at a glorified sports bar, but is this crew seriously the best service industry folk that Nebraska has to offfer? The Upstream is located at the crux of the city's tourist district, but the host and manager/bartender were aloof and mostly incompetent when I approached them about beer. I bought some of their craft beer and NO ONE knew what the fuck a magnum was...? Manager/bartender gave me the credit card slip to sign, silently walked away and was never seen again. The food is fine and is your typical gourmet meets microwave appetizers spin you'll find at brew pubs across the USA. The location is saving this place, but the food IS passable-- on the level of a Yardhouse or maybe a step up. Clean house with the irritable employees and you might have something here. read more

We had a wonderful dinner. We're on vacation and getting a bit tired of standard burger joints, Upstream Brewing had lots of options. The Blonde Pizza and Pork Schnitzel were delicious. We went at the busy dinner hour so expected a wait which wasn't too long. The service was great. Definitely glad we tried this place out. read more
