I had a great visit. Everyone was in such a good mood and made me feel super comfortable. I was there for a routine cleaning and x-rays. After checking in, Alyssa took me to this upright machine to do X-rays. Then we went back for cleaning and more traditional x-rays. The view was really nice, a fountain running in the outdoor space you can see from the chair. Alyssa was great, I'm newer to Albuquerque so she was giving me tons of food recommendations, which I loved! The dentist came in for a few moments noted a tooth to watch and left. Given that I didn't have much going on, it was a super smooth appointment. Guardian insurance paid for everything. Definitely enjoyed my visit. read more

I went to get established with a new dentist so xrays were taken. The hygienist was great. The dentist ordered a Cone xray and I never heard of it so it was explained to me that the dentist ( I hadn't seen yet) wanted to get a better picture and my insurance would cover or I wouldn't be charged). I met with Dr Alyssa Candelaria and we had a discussion about my xrays and that she was referring me to a Dr Sparks, a periodontist. I do not have periodontal disease although my last dentist insisted on deep cleanings. I have an extensive upper bridge covering 9 teeth connected. It is beautiful and cost a fortune. She told me that a back tooth under the bridge had the beginning of an abscess and another was broken and infected. So her referral was for implants, bridge replacement and a totally unnecessary implant on a perfectly good lower molar. Dr Sparks does not take insurance and his consultation fee is $400-$500 alone. The implants would probably range around $30,000 with a bridge replacement so it's a $40k-50k expense. I'm 71 and on SS so how ridiculous is that. Found a periodontist who takes my insurance and luckily got a quick appointment. I do not have periodontal disease, there is no abscess or infection and completely unnecessary to remove anything. On top of that my insurance was billed for a complete dental exam! She never even looked in my mouth. UNETHICAL! I guess it's also medicare fraud since my humana plan is medicare advantage. BEWARE!! Watch your bill!! What you you sign at end of visit and what is on your credit card may be different. Ours was. When we called we were met with rudeness. We will not be going back. I started going when Dr Shepherd was there. He was great. In the 15 years going there since, it's gone down hill with changing staff some good and some not so good. Kelly looked after my cleaning and she was great. Not sure if she is still there but did not see her in December for my cleaning. My advice is try somewhere else. read more

Had my routine cleaning today and so much has changed in the last 6 months. My favorite hygienist is now gone. They cancelled the lifetime whitening program which I was a member of for at least two years, which I paid for upfront. The whitening program is what made this dental office stand out from others. The hygienist I had today was very green. She didn't place glasses on my eyes like other hygienists. I had water pretty much all over the right side of my face and dripping down my neck. Most hygienists will use swabs to clean up but I drip-dried. It's not her fault, she's just inexperienced. I will be looking into the west side location to see if I can transfer or try to locate where my former hygienist ended up. She was great! read more

I was a patient at Uptown Dental Associates, seen twice a year for cleanings and once for a filling. Experiencing tooth pain, I set up an appointment on September 16th, 2024. I was seen by Alyssa Candelaria. After X-rays, she diagnosed a cracked crown and told me I needed an implant. I was prescribed one week of antibiotics. I spoke with a staff member about the cost who also set me up with a surgery appointment on September 19th, 2024, pointing out that Dr. Greaves was the best and had done her mother's implants. The day of the surgery, I was asked by the dental hygienist if I had anything fun planned for that day. Toxic positivity at its' finest. After the extraction, a bone graft and an implant were put in at the same time, instead of the traditional technique of inserting a bone graft, then waiting 3 months to put in the implant. I have osteoporosis and am currently taking medication. The healing process is longer and needs special care. I was scheduled for an appointment in three months and told to take Tylenol. No follow up post op appointment was ever mentioned. I was in extreme pain, so on September 20th, 2024, I called to get a stronger prescription for pain. In excruciating pain a week later, I called to set up an appointment and was seen by Dr. Greaves on September 26th, 2024. Another X-ray was taken but I did not see it. He told me that there was inflammation causing pressure on the nearby teeth. I was prescribed Prednisone, Percocet and a mouth rinse. I was told to return if the pain persisted. I continued to be in such pain that I went to get a second opinion on October 3rd, 2024. The dentist showed me the X-ray he took and told me that the implant is not level. My gum and cheek are still swollen over a month later. I'm experiencing pain, an ear ache and a neck ache. I was referred to an oral surgeon to fix the damage. I called the front desk at Uptown Dental Associates and spoke to Sabrina on October 4th, 2024 to cancel my following appointments, one in January 2025, and one for a cleaning in February 2025. She asked why I was cancelling and I told her everything that had been done wrong. She asked me if Dr. Greaves knew I had osteoporosis, I told her of course he did as as it's in my chart as I put down Boniva on the prescriptions taken list. She passive aggressively told me that their patients always receive the best care and that she would talk to Dr. Greaves about my concerns and call me back. I'm still waiting. This is the worst dental experience I've ever had. read more

Thank goodness for the bad reviews on Yelp. Be sure you read them. I'm not the only one who had a horrible experience with Dr. Jacob Greaves. Before you make an appt be sure to click on the lowest reviews here also. Also, while I can't be certain, I'm pretty sure that most of these 5-star reviews are for teeth whitening. //// My dental procedures and denture-tit were so bad that I filed a complaint, against Dr. Greaves, with the State of New Mexico. (I would have filed a complaint against a dental association, but he doesn't belong to any, including The American Dental Association.) I also talked with a number of attorneys. I found out that suing a dentist is much harder than suing a doctor. //// He extracted four of my teeth, and every day for two months I was in severe pain. Those four teeth were my last four teeth. All of my other extractions were fine --- in fact, I've never had a bad experience with any other dentist in my whole life (I'm 76 years old. And I certainly didn't require stitches, which I did require with Dr. Greaves' extractions.) The extractions happened in July 2023, so it's not like I haven't waited for my jaw to heal. But today - January 2025 -- my jaw has ached every second of every day, and I also experience periodic nerve pain every day. I have 'bone bumps' all around my lower jaw. I can't even put this bad experience behind me and forget him. //// All through the five months I saw Dr. Greaves, no one cared about me and my discomfort. He just kept prescribing antibiotics. Then he prescribed Ibuprofen - 800 mgs 3x a day - like they were candy. //// No one ever called to see how I was doing throughout my visits. However, every time I made another appointment, I had to wait a month because, as the reception desk told me, "He's only in the office 2-3 days a week." How nice to know -- after I've paid my bill in full. He doesn't give refunds (after two visits I did ask for a refund -- because I was so uncomfortable with the treatment but I was loudly told that the office doesn't give refunds). I had no way out. From start to finish, it took me five months to get my dentures -- the ones that don't fit at all. //// When I FINALLY got my dentures, Dr. Greaves never saw me to see if the dentures fit. Not one time. I paid $3000 for my dentures (and $1400 for four extractions) to be treated by THREE DIFFERENT dental assistants. At my last visit, I was still telling the dental assistant that my mouth hurt and that the dentures didn't fit. She simply said, "If you have any pain or discomfort, let us know. Let me see you out." Abusive dentist! Beware Ladies! I won't put more details in here for fear of retaliation, but it IS REAL! Go somewhere else! So yes, many things have changed. I've been here for a few years, all due to Dr Ryan Shepherd who was absolutely WONDERFUL. He's been gone about a year and this new guy is 180degrees opposite of everything that was wonderful about Shepherd. And yes, the Whitening Program is a complete ripoff--$160 down the drain, and they never offered my gel refills, always up to me to ask, there is a whole list that you don't want to make someday for yourselves. Dentistry was fine but administration o office horrible. sometimes the phone system hangs up on you, emails go unanswered, and billing practices horrendous. Do they not understand insurance and their own costs. I spent hours myself on the phone with my insurance, got a hefty bill 18 months after services, it took a month to have anyone call me about it and then she really did not make sense, was unapologetic about the late billing (a timely bill would have helped me in the right tax year) and just kept repeating her mantra without hearing what I was saying. From out of state-i had nerve pain; called 8/31/21 they had an appt. next day @750am. I was greeted with lots of smiles and they really cared. I went in for a tooth extraction. I chose uptown dental because I have a dental phobia from past bad experiences. I was given iv sedation during the procedure. I loved having that option. The extraction area was extremely sore and continued to be unbearable for about ten days. Well I called to let them know they told me dr greaves was not available. Granted this was the weekend. He eventually sent in a prescription for pain meds and a z pak. I have never had this kind of pain accompany an axtraction. And i have had ten of these procedures in the past. Six weeks later the area swelled and begin hurting again. I went in and they did an xray. The doctor said he didnt see any thing wrong on the xray. I was prescribed more anti biotics. Dr graves saud it might be a piece of bone working its way out. Apparently not seen on the xray image. I was very disappointed that i was charged for this visit. $120. I paid over $2000 cash for the original visit. I expected better care at that price. Sorry about the misspellings. Below is the Corona Virus Precautions you can currently expect along with Uptown Dental Associates' amazing quality and service. They did all this without adding too much extra hassle and I didn't notice my appointment taking any longer than usual. Covid-19 Precautions: - The first Corona Virus precaution I noticed, was a special clause in the 2-day reminder. This included instructions on who to contact if I suspected encountering the virus prior to my appointment. - When I arrived at the office, I noticed all the staff were wearing masks, the receptionists' stations were complete with Plexiglas screens, and social distancing was encouraged in the waiting room. - The receptionist greeted me and then took my temperature with a laser thermometer (the device never touched my forehead); once they confirmed I didn't have a fever I was checked-in. - I was told I could wait in the waiting room or in my car and they would call me when they were ready to take me back for my appointment. - When I was taken back, the first thing they requested of me was to wash my hands and then do a quick mouth rinse to help keep the environment clean. - They then asked me a few questions about potential Covid-19 health symptoms and interactions I may have had. (All this happened before I touched anything in the appointment room.) - Finally, both the hygienist and the Dr. wore both gloves, N95 face masks and face shields while working. (And Dr. Shepard made a joke about how much he washes his hands per day. Which was often before this outbreak and is so much more now.) I hope this helps inform you on attending appointments. My review is based on 50 years of extensive dental procedures in many locations out of ABQ. My experience at Uptown Dental with Dr Greavs has been excellent! Dr Greaves is very advanced in treatments of difficult restorations. He and his assistants always listen to concerns and make a great effort to work with your individual needs. The staff, as well as Dr Greaves are always cheerful, patient and the work they perform is skillfully advanced. Ever since having a horrific experience at a dental office a few years back, I've been beyond skeptical about any place i have gone to since. Just looking at pictures of this place is enough to make you want to get your teeth scraped and picked here(my dentist fear is showing). You walk into this palace like lobby with a huge fire place and lots of natural light from the courtyard in the center of the building. I hate filling out forms at any appointment so it made me very happy to be able to fill out the forms online days before the appointment. After checking in, I waited maybe two minutes. My Hygienist Annabelle was so friendly and welcoming from hello. She made sure I was comfortable and educated throughout the entire appointment. My cleaning only lasted about 30 minutes which was great because who wants to spend longer than that at the dentist office? There is no pressure to purchase anything you don't want to or can't afford to, However I was happy to be provided estimates and information on anything I may need in the future. I left the appointment with warm homemade cookies and my teeth feeling so smooth and looking bright as ever! read more

This place is horrible! They are trying to pay off their new fancy building. I have been going here for a year and felt skeptical about charges. Today I had an emergency where my fixed retainer broke. They removed it no problem but pressured me to replace it right away. I explained that I didn't have the $400 today to replace it as I just graduated with my master's degree and am looking for a job. I was pressured to use my credit card and when I explained I would have to wait a month or two the dental assistant Beverly continued to pressure me. She walked me to the front desk and told the women at the front desk I would not be getting a retainer today because I don't have a job. Her and the woman start laughing at me hysterically. How humiliating! I have the money to get the retainer but will be going else where. I don't need to be humiliated. read more

First impression: beautiful, classy office. Everyone is terrifically friendly. The technician comes out and introduces herself and walks you back to the exam room. I came in for two implant crowns. I had been to a dentist here previously and was quoted $2300 for the two crowns plus Xrays. I left because I thought that was high. Uptown dental quoted almost $5000 for the same two crowns. These guys are outrageously expensive. Almost twice the price of the other office. Needless to say, I will be returning to the other office, ABQ dental associates. read more

I just had my second check-up and cleaning at Uptown Dental. It is bar none the best dentist office I have ever been to in my life. I was actually looking forward to my appointment. It is -no exaggeration- a smile spa. The building is beautiful; the tech is high; the staff is incredibly pleasant, organized and thorough. Twice now I've gotten a fantastic cleaning and check-up. Dr. Shepherd is knowledgeable yet down-to-earth. I never feel pressed to have dental work that I don't feel I need. I'm looking forward to going back in 6 months. read more

I have been a patient of this office for over 20 years and used to be very satisfied. Then they built a palace for an office and have to pressure their patients to pay it off. I visit this office for cleaning three times per year and they tell me each time I need full mouth x-rays (the most expensive). The last straw came when I went in for a routine cleaning last December and they charged $50 more than the insurance approved national average for this service. Worse, they charged me for an "exam"--apparently the exam involved just opening my mouth because I never saw the doctor. When I called to complain about being billed in addition to what they soaked the insurance company for, the office manager told me I should get better insurance. I have been sold water pics, night-guards, and unnecessary x-rays for the last time. Instead of getting new insurance, I got a new dentist that charges one-third of this place's rates. read more

This is the absolute WORST dentist in Albuquerque. First of all, I have only seen the "doctor" once and that was on my first visit. I have been going there for 2 years now and have never seen the him again. They even switched my dentist but I still never meet the second one. Second, I started receiving bills for my visits where all I had was a cleaning, and I know that my insurance pays for cleanings at 100%. When I called to question the bill the lady at the front desk said that I was being charged because they were not contracted with my insurance. I informed her that I made sure that they were before ever going to see them. She then told me that the insurance companies that they have contracts with had changed and mine was one of the ones that was no longer in network. She also stated that letters were sent out informing me of this. Well, I never received a letter and neither did others that I know on the same insurance that go there. They even had the right address on file. The lady on the phone was not nice about it at all and basically had the attitude of "well we sent letters and sorry you didn't receive it." Why is sending letters in the mail a good way of contacting patients on something this important? Why did I not get informed about this when I arrived at my last appointment? If they really cared about taking care of their patients they would have asked me "do you know that we are no longer contracted with your insurance" when I arrived at my last visit. But no they didn't! They will not be seeing a penny from me and I will fight the charges if they don't drop them. It's not right to not inform a patient of potential charges before they are seen. I will defiantly never be going here again and I will make sure to tell EVERYONE I know to never go there either. Please don't waste your time on this place. read more
