My wife and I were in the Pacific Northwest for vacation. While boarding our flight, a bag from the overhead compartment smashed straight into her glasses -- obviously this was a disappointing way to start the trip. After a few days of 'dealing with' the misfitting glasses on her face, she'd had enough. We saw this store while in Portland and dipped inside. We were greeted warmly and explained the situation. When I first moved to Portland I suddenly lost vision in one eye & the other was quickly deteriorating as well - with no established optometrist here I did a quick Google and ended up in Dr. Friberg's chair the same day I called. I was already impressed that they were willing to take a new patient in on the same day, in the midst of a covid lockdown nonetheless! As soon as they heard me describe my medical emergency they showed immediate concern and got me in straight away. Dr. Friberg gave me the most consistent, straightforward & meaningful care during a very scary medical emergency! I had to go back a year later for a similar emergency and was just as happy with the care as last visit. I trust Dr. Friberg 100% and am always happy to recommend her to a friend when they're looking for a new eye care doctor! read more

After a lifetime of only needing reading glasses and being told I had a slight astigmatism, I was talked into $800 glasses (the frames were under $200, which is the cheapest they have at Uptown) with "HD" progressive lenses. When my glasses came in I could not see through them. I was instructed by the staff that I just needed to get used to them. They told me I needed to learn to see with them by pointing my nose at things. Struggling with the glasses (who wants to think they've wasted $800?), I learned that Dr. Friberg's explanation of progressive lenses wasn't very reality based. She told me, essentially, that they were a different kind of lens that gave me the perfect prescription for every line of vision. Uh. No. Technology isn't QUITE there yet. Dr. Friberg got the lab they use to make me trifocals with no obvious line on the front. That's all progressives are. I've shown those glasses to two subsequent optometrists (separate people who have examined my eyes in the same way she did) who've shuddered. My next prescription was the same as the one before Dr. Friberg's office. Dr. Friberg had a very strong sense that I should order the lenses with Uptown because other progressives don't work the same "HD" magic. That I need to choose from among these frames, because they work best with progressives. Since my experience here, I have been very careful to visit independent optometrists. I don't think the person recommending glasses and lenses should be the person examining your eyes; there's a conflict of interest. There are notable exceptions and good people, but Dr. Friberg isn't one of them. read more

I'm updating my review of 2010 to reflect another two years of great service by this office. I find them consistently performing at high levels of customer service regarding the patient's health and pocketbook. If I seem enthused, that's only because I've had horrible experiences with other optometry offices and want to give these guys credit. It's nice to be remembered by name, and not treated as a number/revenue source. Doctor Friberg demonstrates clear concern for her patient's well-being. She takes the time to explain everything she's doing, why, and what the results suggest. She is clearly interested in making sure the patient is well-informed of the state of their eyes and the options available. In addition, unlike other Optometrists I've visited she is clearly interested in developing a long-term relationship with her patients. Katie and Torrey work the front office, and have been immensely helpful with everything from scheduling, billing, fitting, and repairs. I had a warranty issue in 2011 and my lenses were replaced quickly and without hassle. Also, during my last visit i was referred to an outside clinic that has specialized equipment, and they made sure the visit was as smooth and seamless as possible. We met Dr. Friberg through a mutual friend and colleague and I decided to try out Uptown for my next pair of glasses. I have had optometrists who are thorough and optometrists who are time-efficient, but it is rare to find one like Dr. Friberg who is both. Yet the patient never feels rushed and she takes all the time needed to zero in on the proper prescription and to explain the health status of the patient's eyes. They all really took the time to explain to me what was going on with my eyes, all about my prescription, and when I had a problem with the glasses they spent over an hour with me taking the time to figure out exactly what was wrong. Due to ill fitting sunglasses purchase and sales pressure from staff to keep the frames and come in weekly for an adjustment, I can no longer trust the service or recommendations from staff. Suggesting I purchase a strap to keep glasses from sliding off my face on a daily level is unacceptable and laughable. (Not regarding sports activity, but every day walking about.) I will not be returning. I expected more since this is not a discount frame shop, but I was willing to pay a premium for a quality product and fit. The doctor is excellent and most trustworthy with respect to examination and eyecare, but there's a disconnect on the sales side. read more

I think this Doctor is the best I have ever seen! I moved here a year ago and when my contacts ran out recently I had to find an optometrist here in PDX. I did an internet search because no one could refer me to a good eye doctor... and I sure am glad the search led me to Uptown EyeCare!! The doctor and staff were all so helpful and very kind!! Dr. Zuzana Friberg is a fabulous optometrist (eye check-er-uper)! (There are also hip glasses, but I can't comment on those since I already have plenty.) I've had laser eye surgery (PRK. The laser was, in fact, mounted on the head of a shark. He was a very skilled surgeon.) so I carefully have my eyes checked annually, and thus go to proper opto-checker-uper, not a "how many fingers am I holding up?" one. Dr. Zuzana went above and beyond - not only did she do the usual comprehensive check (and was cheerful, enthusiastic, and happy to geek out and explain what was going on), but she also carefully noted the position of a freckle in my eye (no, my hair's not red) so that future docs could find it, and gave me printouts of the shape of my cornea. (These are now my desktop background. Well, not really.) Oh, and white-water rafting tips. (You know you're in Portland when ...) I didn't have present need for glasses, so I couldn't avail myself of their opticianal services (spectacle-monger), but the kind optician kindly tightened and cleaned my glasses, just because they're cool like that. So Uptown gets my whole-hearted (4 chambers) endorsement! read more

I just got my contacts and i'm impressed with Dr Friberg,, I move from CA and didnt no where to go. I have a very difficult stigmitisim to deal with and I have had a few optometrist over the years, But she was probably the most efficient and what I like about her is she let me wear my new contacts to see how they felt, than adjusting my left eye contact. Dr. Friberg is a very thorough and skilled optometrist. She gave me an eye exam for glasses in December 2016. However, when I contacted the office on June 28 2017 to make an appointment because I needed a new prescription for RGP(hard contact lenses), Dr.Friberg's assistant Sarah informed me that Dr. Friberg said she would not release my prescription for my RGP to be filled elsewhere other than from Uptown EyeCare and Optical. I have been wearing RGP lenses for 7 years and have seen numerous doctors. I understand that the first pair of RGPs may need lots of adjustments. Therefore, I can understand that the first pair should be ordered from the place where you get your RGP examination. However, there is no logical and rational reasonings and explanations as to why MY prescription would not be made available to me to fill the prescription elsewhere. When I confronted Sarah with this very same statement, she responded "Dr. Friberg would order a very specific and special lens for you, and she said you should get the RGPs from where you get your prescriptions from. You would have to purchase the second or subsequent pairs from us directly because she would not release the prescription for it to be filled elsewhere." (A prescription would have the specificity for the "special lenses" she would prescribe to me, therefore, I would be able to get those lenses somewhere else. Moreover, an optometrist should give the patient the options of lenses that may work great for her to allow her to have more options and choices and not only from the optometrist's business.) First, I am not sure if it is legal or in compliance with the rules for an optometrist to withhold prescription to force the patient to purchase lenses only from the specific optometrist. I am going to file my complaint with the State of Oregon. The doctor there actually told me the lab where she ordered my RGPs from are the same lab as the one Costco uses for RGPs. Third, it's too bad Dr. Friberg has such a shady business practice because she has a great medical practice as an optometrist. Great place to get your prescription provided that she decides to release your prescription to you, but very dishonest business practices. read more

Turns out my prescription was expired so they got me right in and I found the doctor to be very knowledgable and friendly. My wife and I have both used Uptown for glasses, so my review relates to optician service only (not optometrist). We got great service - above and beyond. We both had bad experiences with eye exams elsewhere and as a result both brought bad prescriptions to Uptown. My wife's Rx was closer to reality than mine - when the glasses were made she could see fine except at distance. She went back to Uptown and they suggested she revisit her optometrist. She did and, on re-exam, they changed her Rx. Uptown processed this as "Dr. error" and made another set of glasses at no charge. My Rx (again, not from Uptown) was ridiculously off. Uptown caught this based on comparison of the Rx to my existing glasses (with which I could see better than 20/20) and (once again) suggested I revisit the optometrist. I did (see my review of Broadway Vision World) and returned to Uptown with a new Rx. My new glasses are great and I can see better than ever. I call that great service. Katy is the best. read more

I can't say enough how friendly and helpful Dr.Friberg was and how wonderful Katie was (the office manager). They made me feel so comfortable and didn't try to pressure me into anything. The Doctor does a good job of finding the correct prescription for your glasses, the problem comes when you order glasses from them, they are unable to deliver. I paid $765 for a pair of glasses, they told me I would receive them in 1 to 2 weeks. As of today, it has been 40 days and I still have not received the glasses. They refuse to return my money. They have essentially stolen my money. read more

Came by at 12:30pm, during my lunch hour, having walked just a mile and they had a "out of office - returning in15 mins" sign on the door. I waited 15 minutes, then another 8, and decided to leave. I had visited a number of eyeglass shops trying to find a pair I would love. The selection at this store was on the smaller conservative side, but the sales person was exceptionally nice. In fact, out of all of the shops I've visited the sale person was the only one who actually knew how glasses are supposed to fit on your bridge to prevent them from being annoying and slide down. When I was trying things on she was honest telling me if something did or didn't look good or did or didn't fit. It was nice because she seemed to truly care that the customer was happy opposed to making a sale. I wanted a more funky looking frame so I left without purchasing. But if funky isn't your style I would suggest you try this place out. read more
