Been coming here for years since I was student back in 2011 and have always came back no matter where I lived. This clinic is like an art museum and an optometrist office. If you look around they put so much care in what they do and are so creative. Dr. Aker is reliable and extremely detailed in his exams. I've always had good experiences at this store in the past. The staff have been kind and helpful, and I've appreciated the service every time. Recently, I broke my glasses and came in to compare frames. While doing so, I accidentally put a demo frame into my pocket along with half of my broken glasses. I didn't realize I had it until the next day, and I returned right away to explain and give it back. At first, I was being helped as usual, and I was ready to pick out new frames. But then another employee came out and told me I was no longer allowed to return to the store. It was treated as if I had done something intentional--even though I had come back and taken responsibility for a genuine mistake. It was a really disappointing and embarrassing experience. I did the right thing by returning the item and being honest, but I was treated as if I hadn't. I left feeling humiliated and confused about why I was being punished for doing what I thought was the responsible thing. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Aker and his team since 2017, and could not be happier with their service, care, and professionalism. Dr. Aker is super knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely cares about his patients. In fact, I have enjoyed my experience with them so much, that after moving away in 2020, I've planned my trips back to Portland to include an eye exam with them every year. Dr. A is very informative and attentive. I appreciate him educating me about the entire process of obtaining contact lens. I was prescribed one contact since only one eye needed it. It was around $95 for 90 days worth. Insurance covered the exam which is great. (Anthem) parking can be a pain since the location is close to PSU, however you may get lucky and snag a front row spot. My fiancé is going into see him soon and I recommend anyone who needs new glasses and contacts to see him! He's great! The clinic is super cute with all the bobble heads around the front office area. There are few things in this world that I avoid, one of those things are doctors offices. Optometrists aren't as avoid-worthy but I've had 20/20 vision my whole life, without warning signs to concern me. It's been so long since my last eye appointment that when I got to the, "date of last appointment," part on the new client form, I just stared off into space while I revisited my teenage years. This month I was welcomed into my 30's and along with a *high-five* "see you later" from my 20's, I got slapped with no longer perfect eye sight. I could still read near and far, but it wasn't as crisp and quick as it used to be. So I tucked my tail and booked my appointment, after multiple friends recommended Visualeyes. I was immediately responded to and my appointment was set for the very next week. I would suggest arriving 15 minutes early, to allow time for parking, it's street parking only and requires some space hunting skills. Walking in, I loved that it didn't feel like a doctors office. It was bright and fresh, eyewear was well displayed on shelves with fun touches of staff personality throughout their decor. Dr. Aker was friendly, professional and thorough. He explained everything well and in terms that I could understand, as a person not familiar with eyes or how to digest the scans and test results. I loved the option to do photos instead of pupil dilation because walking around with impaired vision looking like a freaked out cat isn't my ideal fashion statement. The testing was quick and painless, he was patient when I needed to over analyze whether 1 or 2 was more clear and while my 1.5 year old was playing with the knobs of the contraption my face was pressed into. I came in pretty freaked out that my vision was falling apart, something he quickly put to rest. I appreciate the way that he walked me through the eye exams. Next came Kate, who walked me through the frame selection process. She brought out a pair I would never have tried on but ended up really liking. She listened to my multiple remarks about what I did or didn't like, while I was inspecting a current frame on my face. Then she'd walk around to find another pair to get me closer to the final selection. In the end, I walked out loving my frames. I have a wide Korean face, super high cheekbones and a super flat nose bridge. Which means it's not easy to find a pair that doesn't move all over my face while I'm talking or smiling, yet alone finding a pair that does that AND looks good on me. I was completely wow'd by the service and excited to wear my computer glasses, even though it means that I'm no longer a spring chicken. At least I'll be a stylish middle aged chicken. read more

I thought I hated contacts, turns out I just had a truly horrible optometrist (this guy). I found out today from a different optometrist that the contacts Dr. Acker sold to me were an absolutely horrible fit. The contacts I got here would fit properly for a few minutes, then rotate out of place on my eyes (astigmatism). When I asked about the blurriness, he told me that's just how contacts are. I now know that that is absolutely not true. I am furious that I let these people sell me a year's worth of horrible contacts, and more angry that I tried to make them work after taking him on his word. Edit: In response to the owner comment below, I did bring up the blurring problem to Dr. Acker and (as stated in the above) he told me that's how contacts are. I found out that Dr. Acker had lied to me three years later, after giving contacts a second shot with a different optometrist. It isn't a good look to have customers so angry that they bother to leave a review three years later. read more

I usually don't review anything but this is probably the worst optometrist experience I've had. First off, when I came in and filled out that form that lets you bring up any concerns you might have, I expect that to be addressed at some point. So instead I had to bring it up and Dr Aker completely ignored it anyways. I didn't even bother bringing it again cause of how odd it was that he ignored me so I let it slide. Things only got worse from there. Dr Aker insisted I try out 2 week trial pairs even though I said I prefer the 1 month because they are cheaper, but he kept insisting so I gave them a try. He gave me a very wrong prescription and when I told him they were blurry he just sent me home with them and told me my eyes would adjust and then rushed me out by complaining about how late it was getting (his office opens until 6pm). I wore the contacts for a day but couldn't work with them cause they were so blurry so I ended up just using my old contacts until the next appointment. Since I didn't bring in my expired prescription from my previous optometrist, he said he would contact them for that information. The follow up appointment doesn't get any better and Dr Aker still insists I try 2 week trials and doesn't even have the right ones in stock so he gives me a different prescription to try out instead. It's still not clear at all but I'm told to just give it time. I'm not sure why he just wouldn't grab me something else like every other optometrist I've ever had in the past has done until they get it right. At this point I don't even plan on coming back so I just try to get out quickly. I don't even have to try though because he complains again about how tired he is and how late it is getting. I'm not sure why his office even opens past 5pm if he can't handle it and regardless it is unprofessional to complain about being tired while seeing your patient. I end up emailing my old optometrist for my expired prescription and ask if he can just change my prescription to that since I don't notice much of a difference. He emails me back and says they must have faxed him the wrong prescription, which I really find hard to believe. But what really surprises me is that not only does this guy just agree to let me keep my old prescription, but he tries to sell me on contacts again instead of asking me to come in and verifying my prescription. I will say one positive thing though, which is the staff was very friendly and helpful when I emailed them and their office had cool decorations but I would avoid this guy if possible, as he was very inattentive and unprofessional. Unfortunately my insurance will only cover one exam per year so I will be getting a second opinion out of my own pocket. read more

This place is the greatest. From the doctor to the staff that work there. The doctor was super knowledgeable and super friendly. I was a Lion's Club gift certificate recipient and the doctor was more than gracious with me even though I wasn't spending any money. He gave me the exam for free and the prescription glasses with the lenses for free. This guy is amazing and definitely all about serving the community. Visualeyes has been the best experience I've ever had with an optometrist. Dr. Aker and his team made sure I had the best contacts and glasses for my vision and daily needs. I can't say enough wonderful things about them! First off, I have nystagmus (in short- my eyes twitch almost constantly, so these appointments take a while). It has been a source of insecurity my whole life. Every other optometrist I've been to (and trust me- I've been to a lot) has rushed me, or has made me feel like it's a burden to go through the same settings multiple times. Not here. Dr. Aker was not only patient with me, but he and I talked about multiple options for my corrections. We tried a couple trial pairs of contacts before selecting contacts I like. And he got my vision to a point where I almost have 20/20 vision. That hasn't happened in a very long time. He's also really laid back, and you can tell he actually cares about his patients and is good at his profession. Selecting glasses was awesome too! Everyone was so helpful with helping me find a pair that look really good on my face. The best part? Sometimes there's a puppy named Larry behind the front desk. The reason I'm updating them to 1 Star is not because of their actual service but for their awful time management. Today was the second time I made an appointment during my lunch break and both times I waited more than 15 minutes the actually get seen. The first time this happened I waited 45 minutes before walking out. But you know, things happen and the doctor called to apologize. So today I finally went back - still needing new glasses and the exact same thing happened. My appointment was at 11.15 and I was told I'd have to wait 10 minutes or less. Okay, no biggie right? 1130a rolls around and he calls in another patient that also hadn't been seen yet. I don't go around throwing 1 Stars at businesses on Yelp because everyone makes mistakes but this is literally the second time. Both times I left with no new glasses or contact lenses and wasting an hour lunch break and Lyft ride there and back. I won't be back that's for sure. I already switched providers. read more

I highly recommend this office! I've been seen by Dr. Aker for over five years now, and I hope to stay with Visualeyes for life. Andrew does a great job explaining the appointment while you move through different vision and eye health checks. The office is flexible, helpful, and courteous. It makes the whole experience not only easy, but enjoyable. I look forward to my annual visit for new frames. The front office staff is very helpful and down-to-earth. They have an awesome collection of frames in the office, including local brands like Shwood. They can also help you give sight to those in need, if you pick a pair of Toms frames. Bre helped me pick out perfect frames and I can't wait to pick them up! I also brought in all three of my previously bought frames and they adjusted them again to be even. They are so accommodating. Going to the eye doctor is by far one of my least favorite things to do but I have seen Dr. Aker for my last 3 eye appointments and all three have been very pleasant experiences. I was having issues focusing on my work computer and getting random headaches that I couldn't explain. During my visit at Visualeyes, the Doctor found a slight change in my right eyes and made the changes to my prescription. Since picking up my new glasses two days ago, I have noticed my headaches have minimized and subsided. This clinic is very clean with fun decor and the front desk help is very friendly and patient. I haven't been to an Optomistrist in a very long time due to not being able to afford to go, but I got better insurance and was able to come here. Dr. Aker and his staff have been incredibly friendly and helpful in getting me a new prescription and new pair of glasses that work for me. The first time I came in, Dr Aker took the time to get to know me, and address any concerns I had. The office pup is also a huge plus! Every time I come in, he comes running over to say hi. I've gone here for the last few years, really only because of the convenience factor. I was a student at Portland state so it was easy for me to go in for appointments or to grab contacts etc. However in all my time here I've experienced both the doctor not listening to my needs, but also trying to constantly upsell me. I feel like he tries to take advantage of kids who don't know any better or who have parents that pay for everything. He offered me a sample of blue light contacts, and then charged me for them without telling me. And then when I explicitly said I did not want them and wanted my regular contacts, he still ordered the wrong ones for me to try to make me pay for them. He also was pushing colored contacts on me which I had mentioned I was not interested in at all. With covid they have been on limited hours. That's fine and normal, however I have been unable to get any information from the front desk about the hours that seem to change everyday. I've driven down there twice and have had them closed twice and have not had my messages returned They also don't update their website at all for hour changes. Just not with going to when there are other, professional doctors to go to. read more

I didn't have a good experience while being here. I came to here to make glasses, and the glass that i got turned out to be sliding down my nose. I came back for a couple of adjustments but the problem still exist. I was assured that I could change to other frames and just pay the amount of difference if my glass still kept falling down. I really like the frame but it didn't work for me. It came to the point that I had to decide to change frame. However, they said I have to pay full price of the new frame regardless whatever the said to me earlier. I felt like i was being cheated. Never going back here again. read more
