I had been doing my research for e-bikes for a couple of weeks now and came across this place. The owner was there working on a bike, he's the one that helped us. He was nice and really trying to help us but I got my first red flag when he didn't speak to us about mileage or asked the distance my son was going to ride the bike. When I asked him what class was this bike he wasn't able to give me a direct answer. But he showed me how fast it could go and it was 30 mph. Again, me needing him to clarify because my son can only get a class 2 but he wouldn't clarify what the bike really was. And I can see why, he just builds them. Also, the bike only had one motor. In a prior e-bike store (with more professional salesmen) we were told only one kid could ride on a one motor e-bike. So I asked him since it only had one motor if only one kid max. This man said yes two kids can ride on a one motor e-bike. I did my research and no, only one kid can ride on a one motor e-bike. False information. Now I can see how if I would have purchased this bike it would have messed up quite fast. I am glad I decided to take a look at other reviews. I kept getting red flags and I'm glad I listened to my gut. Saved myself from a bad experience.

Then he followed up to ask me some good questions that helped me clarify exactly what kind of bike I really need. Then I visited his shop in Manhattan Beach to test ride some bikes and get a better feeling for the state of the art. All good. Then Jonathan contacted me to let me know that my preferred bike manufacturer was having a sale. I wanted a bike but the timing was not right for me. So we kept in touch. Today everyone's patience paid off. I finally got it. Jonathan delivered my new bike and it is superb. Yay! Jonathan pinged me two weeks ago to let me know that Urtopia has a new model that he believes will be perfect for me, and he offered me a great deal, so I bought it based on his recommendation. Today I got the first model delivered. It's the Urtopia Atom Carbon in silver / black. It is astonishing to ride. Super fun, easy, great balance, incredible power. The power boost is so great that it took me by surprise. I live in the hills, and frankly riding up the hill can be a big pain, especially after a long ride. This new bike devours the hills like an appetizer. Effortless climb. I just got home from a long ride, and I am amazed. Best of all, Jonathan got it for me at a price I could never have gotten directly on my own. A bike with twice the power that fits into my budget! I thank Jonathan for his patience, his excellent recommendations, his willingness to wait until there was a sale on a bike that was right for me and fit my budget. At no time did he attempt to rush me or persuade me to buy a bike that wasn't right. That is how you build trust with a customer. I will recommend Burn the Ships to all of my friends, and I will definitely buy all my ebikes there. If you are still reading, you might be wondering why it matters that you have a trusted relationship with a bike store. That's a fair question. Here are some things to consider. First of all, how do you know the bike is right for you (your size, your fitness level, your weight, your riding style, your skill level). How do you know the bike is right for your terrain? How do you know that the specific model you are considering has the right attributes, durability, power, size etc for your needs? If you are new to eBikes, the truth is that you don't have answers to these questions. Jonathan can help you. And there's a second reason to trust the store you bought it from. Who will assemble it for you? Who will service it for you? This matters more than you may realize. There are a lot of eBikes available from online retailers who will ship you a bike in a flat box, and then you have the pleasure of figuring out how to assemble it. If that's your jam, go for it. Personally, I prefer to have someone with professional skills who can assemble the bike for me. And even if you are cool with assembling your own bike, you will eventually face the biggest problem. Eventually every eBike will need service or repair. Where are you going to take your Internet bike for service? Not all bike stores will service the cheap bikes that you buy on the web. So, if your bike breaks down, you may discover that you don't really own a bike, what you really have is unrepairable e-waste. Don't make that mistake. Instead, I recommend that you go for the professional service from someone who knows what they are doing, who will sell you a quality bike that can be maintained. Jonathan is serious about eBikes, and he expects to deal with serious customers. That is fair. He does not take a big markup on the bikes, so he can't afford to waste time on people who are vague or non-committal or just window shopping. Don't be that guy. If you are not ready to make a decision yet, or if you need time to figure out your needs, do some homework first. My advice is to rent various eBikes a few times and ride around to get the feelilng of it, and then you will have a much better idea of what you need before you visit the shop. Also, get an idea of what a good eBike really costs (hint: prices for decent quality eBIkes start at $2500 and go up from there. Don't expect to get quality for less than that). Back on July 3rd, 2026 I went into this bike shop expecting a meh experience from reading other…read morereviews about the employees at this location, but my experience with Art was great. I was in the ballpark of knowing what sort of e-bike to get (tech-spec wise), but wanted it within a certain budget range, which was out of scope for my knowledge. Art helped me pick and choose what bike options I had within their inventory. Ultimately I took up on his decision on getting a Mangosteen e-bike. Art's recommendations and advice was the best to understand and good to know. If you end up working with Art, He'd hook you up. Store Pros: A LOT of e-bikes to choose from. They had a much bigger inventory than expected, since from the outside the store looks small. You'll most likely find something you'd like here. Accessories are readily available in-store as well. If you need a new bike lock, helmet, or maintenance parts (brake pads, and other misc. parts), they will be readily available in-store. Store Cons: While the store had a great inventory to look and choose from, it was more on the pricier side. Again, It's subjective per person, but from what I remember from browsing around, most e-bikes in this location start from $1,250+. While there are some affordable e-bikes in this location, the starting price might deter budget-friendly buyers from this location. Due note: the upside to these higher prices is that the bikes come pre-assembled, and labor fees are NOT included when buying the bike. That's a plus in my book. Only one employee may be available at a time. No shade to Art (more than anything go to him before anyone else.). Since there's typically one person on the floor to help customers out, there may be a chance of long wait times if the employee is helping someone else out in the store. If you're an impatient person, this will be a red flag to you. For anyone else that is patient, It's worth the wait. Overall: I'll definitely be coming back to this shop for bike-related maintenance, questions, and possibly buy more bikes in the future if need be. But depending on who you're with, your experience may vary. I can happily vouch for Art, His work and commitment on helping me out has been outstanding.

After waiting two weeks, I received a text saying the bike was ready and that the total would be $89.99, including parts and labor. When I arrived to pick up the bike, I was told the price would actually remain $120 because they had to order "special oil." I was confused since their text clearly stated $89.99 including parts and labor. I also mentioned that I appeared to have been double-charged and tried to show the owner the charge on his phone. He refused to look, checked his computer, and said it showed only one charge and told me to contact my credit card company. Later that day, my son rode his bike and came home after about an hour saying his rear brake wasn't working. He had to slam on his front brake to stop and ended up crashing. He came home with a bruised and scraped knee and a sprained wrist that now requires him to wear a brace for a month. I immediately called the shop and was told to bring the bike back in. The owner said the issue was a "glazed rotor" and that we needed a new rotor. I declined the additional service. What's concerning is that the bike was returned to us with a rear brake that did not function properly. Instead of taking responsibility, the owner accused my son of doing wheelies, which is simply not the case. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The pricing was inconsistent, concerns about billing were dismissed, and most importantly, the bike was returned in an unsafe condition.
