How terrific is Urartu? I take the 217 bus from the Fairfax area to Hollywood and transfer to the 180, which drops me a block from Urartu. If you have not had a cup of "soorj" -- the Armenian word for coffee prepared in their tradition -- you have been missing out on a great pleasure. Add a conversation with friends -- "zruyts'" in Armenian, schmoozing in Yiddish -- while sitting on comfortable chairs inside, around shaded tables outside, weather permitting, then add first-rate pastries and sandwiches, and you have the enjoyment of humans being social animals who love to communicate with each other. What a nice find! Jim G. and I had some time to kill after eating a ridiculously large lunch at nearby Raffi's place. We walked down a little alley leading away from Raffi's and stumbled upon Maryland St, which is partially closed down to cars and was decorated so nicely. It was great to find a local, independent coffee spot, so we walked in and were greeted by the two friendly gentlemen behind the counter. After glancing through the menu, I had to ask about what seemed like their specialty, Soorj. Soorj is traditional Armenian coffee, brewed to be strong, and with the traditional 'sludge' at the bottom of the little cups in which it is served. Where else but at an Armenian coffee shop in Glendale should one try Soorj? I had to have it, no sugar of course. We grabbed a table outside and enjoyed the 73 degree December day, watching people and their cute dogs walk by. Our Soorj was brought out and it was strong and tasty. One of the kind gentlemen even came to check on us, since he knew it was our first time having Soorj. People rave about their other drinks, as well as their pastries (which looked amazing), so this seems like a spot you should definitely check out if you're in the area! read more

Urartu Coffee has friendly service and tons of open seating in the closed street out front. Lissa G and I both enjoyed, Soorj, a traditional Armenian coffee, which is nice and strong! Look out for the sludge at the bottom of the espresso sized cup, once you hit that zone you are done with your tasty coffee. Lots of seating inside too. First time checking this place out! Should've stepped inside earlier bc their iced mocha is bomb! I love my iced mocha but it's rare to find a good one so this place will be my new go-to for coffee here in Glendale. I came here on a coffee date with my sister and was blown away by how delicious everything was. This cozy little coffee shop is located on Maryland and you can find free 90 minute parking in the surrounding lots. There is some indoor seating along with a bunch of outdoor. I had an iced soy vanilla latte and a ham sandwich. The latte was creamy and perfectly sweetened, it was hard not to gulp it all down in one sip. The sandwich, despite its simplicity, was amazing. It tasted homemade and reminded me of the sandwiches my mom used to make me when I was younger. A must try place! read more

I came here on a whim and they had a lot of interesting drinks, but decided to go with the classics and got an iced tea and a cappuccino. One thing I applaud them for is making any of the loose leaf teas iced or hot. It was a warm day so I ordered an iced English Breakfast tea. It was on the lighter side and tasted more like a Darjeeling and the cappuccino was quite weak and probably would add another shot to the drink. ​ The vibe of this place did feel awkward without any music playing and the tables were taken​ up by many people working on laptops, but what I do appreciate is their willingness to serve their drinks, both take out and "here" orders regardless of how far the outside seating is. What was quite frustrating is how long it took for the drinks to come out. Overall, it was alright. The experience could have been better, but maybe I'll give it another go next time. I love this place! I'm so happy that the Starbucks around the corner was packed. :) I've got seven really good reasons but I'm sure there's more. First: The owners and staff are friendly. Second: It is very clean, including the bathroom. Third: The customers are friendly too. A man helped me figure out my Armenian Coffee (don't drink the heavy murky grounds that are at the bottom of the cup). Fourth: The prices are reasonably. I had a Strawberry Yoplait, a banana (perfect with no brown spots), my first ever Armenian coffee and a medium hot tea (loose leaf). The total was around $10 (I didn't buy it all at once so I don't know the exact amount, I also left a tip in the jar). Fifth: Everything was prepared fresh and brought to my table when I ordered so if you are looking for a quick in and out don't come here. Sixth: They have free wifi. Oh MY GOSH - what a GREAT find! LOVED this quaint adorable little coffee shop. Hubby had their Armenian coffee - it's like an expresso but richer and not bitter at all. I had their hazelnut latte with almond milk and it was by FAR the BEST I EVER had! I think it's all due to the coffee they use. it was amazing - deep rich flavor and with the hazelnut - had the right amount of flavor but NOT overly SWEET! The owner was so nice and accommodating - very friendly and you can see the regulars that come by. Love this place and they had free internet as well so a GREAT place to just hang and have a nice cup of coffee! And the parking lot is right behind it with free first 90 minutes. It was exactly the break we needed in a warm quaint friendly environment! LOVED it!! read more

This place is a wonderful spot to get some work done if you're ever in the Glendale area. They even have a computer and printer setup for customer usage, which really demonstrates the care the business owners have for their customers. When we ordered our drinks, our barista also offered their WiFi password to us which is a bit different from my usual experience-- usually it is either written somewhere in the store or, as a measure to ensure only paying customers are using the WiFi I suppose, you must personally ask the staff for it (which of course can sometimes be awkward, especially if you're anything like me). In any case, I thought that was just indicative of how friendly the cafe workers were, and they certainly made me feel right at home. Jules and I both got a matcha latte, a hot one for her and and iced one for myself. The matcha powder got really clumpy and it was too easy to get those clumps in every sip of Jules' hot latte. My cold latte could avoid it until the end when the remaining latte mingled with the powder clumps at the bottom. Of course with matcha this is no surprise since it's powdered green tea, but the powder clumps are just a little too bitter for me. Jules complained about the texture of the clumps which I too understand since one may expect a smoother drink. Nonetheless, caffeine is caffeine. And this cafe served its purpose well: as a workspace with ample outlets to plug in my phone charger as well as Jules' laptop charger. When I come back, I'll try something different. read more

I love Urartu! While I have a soft spot for small businesses and mom-and-pop establishments, I continue to frequent this place because their food and drink offerings (at least the ones I've tried) do not disappoint. Some of my faves: - Hot almond mocha latte (my go-to drink, as in I would order this probably 4-5 times a week...yes, I love it that much) - Iced mocha - Nutella banana croissant - Urartu omelette - Milky way picante (it's basically a bagel with bacon, cream cheese, and jalapeño) - Pigs in a blanket My hubby and I have been coming here for many years. We continued to come here even when I was pregnant (I just opted for decaf coffee) and definitely after. Now, with a toddler in tow, we still go here not only because of the yummy food and drinks, but also because of the warmth and kindness of the owners. They really do treat you like family, something you probably won't get from the big coffee chains or those hipster coffee shops. Definitely miss being able to sit down and hang out inside (it's a nice space with a really good vibe) but grateful that outdoor dining is back, so we can at least enjoy our coffee and food outside. This is surely one of our favorite places in the community, and Urik, Lora, and Youra (the father-mother-son owners) are some of our favorite people. Stopped here for breakfast takeout. The coffee was A+ I ordered the Yama cold brew and it's one of the smoothest cold brews I have tasted. We also ordered an americano, lox breakfast bagel, Urartu omelette, guava/cheese croissant, and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything we had was satisfying and tasty. As soon as you approach the cafe on the whimsical block of Artsakh, you'll recognize the Middle Eastern men adorning the tables with their smokes, cards, etc. It's a quintessential sight for any fellow Middle Easterners, along with the prolonged stares. The family running the shop are friendly and helpful. Havana beans used for their lattes/espresso Breve Lattes: 5 (I really enjoyed the roast, as it wasn't dark/bitter, but creamy and full-bodied). I nursed my 16oz Breve latte for 20minutes or so, sauntering around peacefully, until my nearby reservation at Raffi's was ready. They had an assortment of baked goods, but I politely declined, as I was awaiting dinner momentarily. They looked good! Would recommend if in the area. read more

Truly a hidden gem! This is a cute little cafe with coffee and other drinks, pastries, and simple sandwiches and wraps. I ordered the turkey & bacon wrap and an Italian soda. I felt that the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I didn't realize that the wrap had a creamy dressing, which I would generally avoid, but I didn't care that it was in my wrap. The young lady at the register was very friendly and welcoming. The cafe is clean and had decent amount of seating. There's outside seating as well. I'm seriously surprised that I hadn't already reviewed Urartu Coffee. This is seriously one of my favorite coffee shops anywhere. It's not easy to find soorj (Armenian coffee) around, and Urartu Coffee absolutely nails it! I've been to a LOT of coffee shops around the world, and it's hard to find others that come close to the flavors, kindness, pastries, and service at Urartu. They have the usual complement of coffee and espresso drinks that you can find at most coffee shops, but I would highly recommend starting with the soorj, Armenian coffee. There's just something so nice about having such finely ground coffee with a hint of cardamom. It's also small, so you're able to get something else after like a latte without feeling too bogged down. Their pastries are also excellent, and I recommend arriving early so that you get your pick of the amazing things they have to offer. Seriously, if you're in Glendale, you have to stop here. I make it a point to come here every time I'm in town. read more

I ordered a regular coffee and the woman behind the counter was very helpful in describing the pastries she had. They were fresh out the oven! I ordered their ham and cheese croissant which she brought to my table. It was buttery, flaky and toasted perfectly. Later, I also ordered their orange juice. Honestly, at $7 it's pricey but definitely fresh because she juiced it on the spot. Pulpy, the way I like it. A benefit to staying longer is seeing how staff interact with customers. They were warm and friendly with everyone that came in. Even with the people that would test anyone's patience. They have a decent breakfast lunch menu that's made to order. No pre-made frozen sandwiches here! Very clean and it looks like they hang the work of local artists. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating because the street is blocked off.
