I worked with Joey for my wedding on Feb 1, 2019, and couldn't have been any happier! Originally JBeautique, I found Joey while perusing Instagram/Yelp and saw she was now a part of Urban Beauty Loft. As someone who normally does not wear makeup, it was difficult to find examples of hair styles that suited my preferences. I wanted to wear glasses, and have my hair mostly down, with bangs. You would not believe the lack of brides-in-glasses examples they have online! #thestruggleisreal Nevertheless, as fate would have it, I did find Joey and we scheduled a trial run on the day of our engagement shoot. It went so well! Not only was Joey patient and kind, but she delivered a look that I loved so much, I wanted the same style for the day of my wedding. My makeup felt light and looked very natural - essentially I "looked like myself," which is exactly what I was hoping for. Joey not only went above and beyond by coming to my home to get ready ridiculously early in the morning, but she came afterwards to do touch-ups! I had a long gap in between my ceremony and the reception, and it was so nice of her to come pretty me up again. She also gave me great tips on how to remove my makeup at the end of the day. This review is for Joey. Writing this after two weeks to ensure I don't let emotions get in the way because I had strong, sad emotions on the day of. I had Joey as my artist. It was for my city hall wedding. Summary below. Detailed review followed. Tl:dr: South Asians - find somebody else. The eye makeup was great but that was about it. The complexion matching and evening out Skin tone wasn't great. I have a pretty nice skin with no acne or scars - with one caveat. I'm south Asian so I have dark circles and slightly darkened skin around my lips. And Joey had neither the right products or the experience to even those out. We removed and reapplied the full base three times and still didn't get the results. The hair were rushed and hence didn't have the nice smooth, flowy bun which was the brief. Joey tried but I don't think this is their strength. Also, we decided to plan this in a few weeks so I didn't have time to do a trial. Definitely got burned. Joey is a nice person but I definitely wouldn't have chosen them if I'd done a trial. Pros: 1. Both Fiona and Joey were good to talk to and coordinate. Joey came on time and was prompt with communication. 2. One star for the eye shadow application which was great. Lashes took a while to get right but great when they did! Cons: 1. Complextion: My biggest brief to them was about evening out my skin tone around my lips and covering up my dark circles. And after three application and a cry session later - still didnt not get it right. She didn't have the right products to color correct or match the tone. Results: great eyelids with dark circles underneath and darkness around lips and on chin. 2. Hair: I'd asked for a simple, loose bun with smooth hair. We'd even aligned on pictures. But because we'd spent so much time on the face, she didn't have time to smoothen and straighten. Only ended up curling into a tight bun full of hair spray and wax to get over that we hadn't straightened the hair. 3. The base makeup didn't stay well beyond 5 hours (maybe because of the rushing at the end) and it became patchy after 5-6 hours read more

I am so happy that I found Joey for my wedding earlier this month! Everyone in the bridal party looked amazing!!! I found Joey on the preferred vendor list from the venue. She was the only makeup artist I scheduled a trial with and I knew she was the right person right away. She was really easy to communicate with. The look she created at the trial session was really good, but I wanted some changes to fit my style more. Before the wedding day, I sent her emails communicating the look I like and she provided me with great professional opinions. She did 8 makeups in total and hair for me. Her makeup work is so detailed and clean. She used individual eyelashes on me, which worked out so well. No discomfort at all! What I love most about Joey is that I looked fabulous and very bridal, but I still look like myself. Max, the hairdresser also did a great job with the bridal party's updos. Joey is also so sweet and easy to talk to. One bonus is that she can also speak Mandarin. Joey did such an incredible job with my hair and makeup for my June 2018 wedding -- I still get compliments for how I looked that day, nearly 5 months later! I wanted to look like myself, but better for my wedding day, definitely not overdone and when I found Urban Beauty Loft, I knew they would get what I was going for. I went in for a trial a month or two before the wedding and Joey was super helpful at asking questions, what I liked, what I didn't, what the theme was, and my dress and accessories to get a feel for what I wanted. She was super flexible (I'm crazy indecisive) as I changed my lip color, hair styles...etc. and I left that day feeling really confident that I was in good hands. The day of the wedding, Joey was super communicative and prompt -- she did my mom's makeup as well and was able to speak to my mom (who doesn't speak English well), in Cantonese, which put her at ease with getting her makeup done for the first time. Joey is AMAZING. She knows how to bring out a person's natural beauty, creating a look for you where you'll come out still looking like you, but like the best version of you that you could have ever imagined, with all your best features played up yet in perfect harmony with the rest of your face. I worked with her for hair and makeup for my wedding this past April and oh my goodness, I have never looked so beautiful in my entire life!! The makeup looked fresh and timeless - perfect for our springtime wedding and for our location. The hairstyle she created was beautifully detailed, elegant and sweet... and she had to adapt a bit since my hair had grown out in the months since our initial trial. She also created a second look that built on the first and was stunning for the evening, that was just a touch of glamorous without being too "much." And to top it all off, the makeup and hair LASTED through the entire day, with the morning hair/makeup somehow still looking amazing through a tearful first look, an outdoor ceremony in windy Half Moon Bay, an emotional tea ceremony, and an afternoon of traipsing around Half Moon Bay taking photos. The evening look she created lasted through the dozens of table toasts, more tearing up through parts of the reception, and lots of dancing, and somehow at the end of the night, I still looked gorgeous. I am seriously so grateful that I found Joey for my wedding day hair and makeup. I went through at least 15 different bridal hair stylists/makeup artists and feel so lucky that I stumbled across Joey. I was looking for someone who was experienced with asian makeup and braided updo's and her portfolio had the best of both worlds. I knew that I didn't want to waste time (and money) going in for trials at multiple places so I wanted to be sure that whoever I picked for my trial would eventually be my makeup artist/hair stylist on the day of my wedding. After looking at her portfolio, and then reaching out to her with questions, I knew that she was everything I was looking for. Her price is pretty reasonable especially compared to other places in the SF area. I needed hair and makeup for myself, and then just hair for my 7 bridesmaids and then my mom, so I was able to get a package deal from her. I really appreciated her patience during our trial(s). Her trial session for the package I bought included 1 makeup trial and 2 hair trials, but the first time I went in for the trial I accidentally got there later than anticipated so we only had time to do 1 hair trial. That was probably a blessing in disguise because turns out the hair I originally envisioned (and had all over my Pinterest) was not suitable for my face. I voiced my concern and she told me that it was not a problem, and we can schedule to get my second hair trial done on a later day, and in the meantime I can continue to look for hair inspiration photos. I did just that, and went in way more prepared for my second trial. I showed her the look that I was going for and she tried to replicate the photos, but then when I looked at the final updo, I didn't really like how it turned out (it looked kind of messy and unnatural, and didn't fit my face at all). I communicated my thoughts and she immediately understood and spent another 30 minutes adjusting the look until I was satisfied to say "okay, I'm comfortable with this being my wedding look." On the morning of the wedding, I was super confident in Joey's makeup since I loved how it turned out during our trial, but I was a little nervous about my hair. Turns out, I didn't have to be because Joey went above and beyond and everything turned out so unbelievably perfect and amazing! She took all of my concerns during our trial session to heart and I was just so impressed and overwhelmingly pleased with how it turned out! I definitely recommend Joey to anyone looking for bridal makeup and hair! She's super friendly, patient, and professional, and not to mention extremely experienced. UPDATE: I emailed my feedback to Joey and she responded right away saying she appreciated my honesty and said she would offer me a complimentary trial to see if we can get it right. It was a very kind note and I stand by my statement before that Joey is very professional. I'm not sure if I'll go through with the second trial, but I certainly wanted to update and bump up the stars in my review. **** Joey is an extremely nice person and very professional. While I loved the photos in her online portfolio, when I went in for a trial, she just was not able to make me look great. I have really beautiful skin, and I felt that she covered it up completely with foundation to the point where you could tell it was foundation and not my skin. The first hairstyle she tried on me was just not me (she gave me a giant pouf, even though I hadn't shown her anything with a pouf). I wanted something simple and natural, and even after we tamed the pouf, the hair still felt really complicated. My eyes also looked smaller rather than bigger. I was lukewarm when I left the trial, but when I got home, I realized I truly did not like the way I looked. I did not feel beautiful until I wiped off about half the makeup and took all of my hair down. The other thing that bothered me was that the trial cost $350, which is really pricey. Other stylists I've talked to range between 150 - 250 for a trial. I don't blame Joey at all because she was very clear about her pricing up front, but now that I know that Joey and I don't have the same style, I do regret taking this on and wasting $350. I could tell that a lot of Joey's Asian clients like big hair and lots of makeup, so I definitely think our styles just did not match well. At the same time I feel like a great stylist is always flexible and knows how to make you look and feel beautiful in your own way--so that's why I'm giving only two stars. read more

i was part of a wedding party that hired joey to do hair and make up. i love her website and her work shown but was skeptical to see her work on me. i've been in quite a few weddings, including my own, and the make-up NEVER turned out as nice where i was completely satisfied. it's usually nice at the first hour but by the end of the night it looks cakey and cracks everywhere. I received lots of good comments from my family and friends. She also gave me a lot of good suggestions for my makeup and hair style and how it can better match my wedding dress. Another reason I want to write this review is because I had some bad experiences with the other makeup artists. Sometimes you don't realize how good the person is if you don't have comparisons. Here comes my story: I originally hired Joey as my whole day makeup artist. For my bridesmaids' makeup, I gave the opportunity to my friend, who just graduated from makeup school. I wish I would just hire Joey's team to do bridesmaid makeup at the beginning. Last minute, my friend had some serious family emergency and could not do my bridesmaids' makeup. So my wedding planner ended up finding me 3 young makeup artists for my bridesmaids. Those 3 young makeup artists are horrible. They arrived my hotel suite with their breakfast and they were eating when they were doing makeups. They spread their makeup cases everywhere and do not clean up afterwards. They were so loud the whole time without considering that the bride needs a piece of quiet. They also used my hotel suite as their photo studio and kept taking selfies. While the whole time, Joey was very patient, polite and professional. She is also very organized and clean unlike the bridesmaids makeup artists. My whole point to share this story is you want someone professional, with the correct industry experience and knows what they are doing on your big day. Not only Joey can do flawless makeup, but also she is professional and with the right manner. Joey did an excellent job as the makeup and hair stylist for me and my mother at my wedding recently. She was very service oriented, accommodating, and created a natural look for us without heavy makeup which was what we wanted. I especially like how she did my eye makeup. I'm not used to wearing heavy makeup, so I didn't want to end up looking dramatically different on my wedding day. She was very creative - instead of using mascara, she applied a bit of eye lashes and eye shadow around my eyeline which did not smudge and looked much more natural. Normally it is difficult to choose a nice peach eye shadow color for my skin tone, but Joey did my eyes in peach very nicely so it looks absolutely natural. For my mother, she applied a pinkish/lavendar color eye shadow which blended very well without looking too dramatic. I also liked the lip color she chose for me - matches the overall natural, peachy colors that was just right. Joey did my makeup by the window with natural sunlight so she picked the right color of foundation which matched my neck and looked very natural especially in the outdoor which was where my ceremony took place. I also loved the hairstyle - I wanted natural, loose curls which Joey did for me so perfectly and lasted literally the entire day. Best of all, she didn't have to put a lot of product on my hair so it felt really light. Joey's package also fit my needs very well - she was with me the whole day from prep time in the morning, through the tea ceremony, through the wedding ceremony and until the beginning of the reception, so she had the chance to help me touch up along the way (and I needed it!) instead of simply leaving me with a touch up kit. I felt much more comfortable with her around before all the special and important moments in front of the guests and the camera. Joey provided high quality service and was a pleasure to work with. I worked with Fiona and her team at jBeautique to provide hair and airbrush makeup for myself and my 5 bridesmaids for my wedding. My service included a trial at her home studio to work out our vision for the big day. The trial went incredibly well with little effort on my part. I came with some images pinned on Pinterest of wedding hairdos and Fiona merely glanced at them saying she understood. It was important to me to look very natural since I never wear makeup. She assured me that was her preferred style. I was a little worried because she didn't study the images up close; however, she really did understand what I wanted without dwelling on the photos. I imagine this was due to her wealth of experience and expertise in the field. After our meeting I gave her a tiny bit of feedback on wanting more volume at my hairline but otherwise that I was pleased with the trial. I didn't think it was possible to outdo the trial; however, the finished look on my wedding day was striking. My hair and makeup were perfect and twice as beautiful as my trial. All my bridesmaids were pleased with their hair and makeup too, which were done by her two assistants. All our makeup and hair withstood a scorching 90 degree day in the sun, which added to my appreciation of her work. When I first started researching artists the pricing seemed high; however, it was comparable with all other quality vendors I came across, and after seeing the photos from my big day, I definitely got my money's worth! She was somewhat slow to respond to emails; however, she was still reliable and dependable so I consider her well worth the wait! I couldn't have felt more beautiful on my wedding day.
