I hired Violet for my wedding hair and makeup years ago, and unfortunately did not have a good experience. She did an amazing trial and I was so excited. The day of my wedding, she had extremely poor planning and time management, and decided it was smart to start me, the bride, last. That resulted in me literally being late, with her rushing to finish. The end result was a mess, it was awful. When I texted her photos afterwards politely expressing my disappointment (with trial and wedding photos attached), she did not offer to refund me but instead offered to redo my hair and makeup again for wedding photo retakes - strange, as how I clearly could not retake photos from that day and had no plans to pay tons of money for another post-wedding photo shoot?? I just got married this summer on July 2nd Indiana did my makeup for the wedding!. I found the Dolls just by searching the web for local artists. I wanted someone who used a natural pallet and brought out the features of the face without completely changing it. When I found their portfolio I loved how their brides looked like themselves not like clowns. I contacted them immediately and she got me right away. We first met for a trial run. I went to her cute studio in San Mateo and was pleasantly surprised by the warmth I immediately felt from Indiana. She was easy going and down-to-earth. I felt like I had know her for years. We talked the whole time and she really cared to hear about my love story and details about the wedding. If costumer service and "bedside-manner" is as important to you as it is to me you will love Indiana. One thing I was specifically looking for in a makeup artist was the use of an airbrush machine, which is what the Dolls use! I would never do anything else again...it feels light and airy but covers the whole face, making your skin look soft and natural. And Indiana is a pro at using the machine! After she finished my face she allowed me to look at the result and let her know what I wanted to change. I loved that she wanted only to make me happy and was more than willing to adjust my face to achieve that. I didn't feel at all as though I was offending her, she was so open to doing anything I wanted. Once we finished she took some professional photos with her nice camera and pro lighting equipment. She sent them to me that day so I could make any note changes I wanted on the big day. Later that day I went to my bridal shower and everyone loved the look and couldn't wait to see me on the wedding day. On the day of the wedding she came to the hotel and it was like two months had never passed. We caught up on all the events and details that had been going on in the past couple months. I had sent in an inquiry at the start of the year regarding my late summer/early fall wedding. I got an email response promptly from Violet with the current pricing list and telling us we should reach out if we had further questions. After reviewing, I had a few other follow-up questions since I was planning for makeup for myself, my bridesmaids, and our Moms. I received no reply, and after following up two weeks later, I still got no answer. If the date was booked, or even if Violet wasn't interested in booking our wedding, it would be professional and appropriate to at least notify us so we would know to move on and consider other options. I had a lot of back and forth before deciding to write this review as I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but then I thought about other brides that go into their wedding planning and getting all excited about their hair and makeup then ending up with an experience like mine and feeling disappointed and torn between saying something and just dropping it. So let me say this, overall I felt beautiful on my wedding day and violet did a decent job. However, getting their was not a fun experience just a few things that happened during my wedding day makeup and hair experience: 1. She did not listen to my sister when she explained that her hair looked fuzzy and bad in the back. In fact when my sister ended up undoing her hair after Violet did it, because everyone told her how fuzzy and horrible it looked, Violet just glanced at my sister and told her " well that's ugly." Who says that to the sister of the bride the day of the wedding. 2. All of us had our hair blow dried the day before, professionally, and Violet managed to make all of our hair a big fuzz ball at the top because it seems the only thing she knows how to do with hair is teez it circa 1985. 3. When the photographer and the Videographer arrived shed suddenly got into a bad mood and said she hates this part where they have to take photos, then she proceeded to yell at my photographer as he was taking photos and asked him to stop taking photos. 4. She continued to talk about her man issues not only during my trial but also during my wedding day and kept checking her text messages as she was doing my makeup to see if the guy she had gone out with had text her. 5. She was not very clean and organized with her makeup and frankly she added a doom and gloom mood to the makeup experience. 6. She did my moms hair like an old lady and my mom had to pay an additional $100 to this other amazing hair stylist Liz who had to straighten the fuzzy mess Violet had done. 7. In summary: poor attitude on the brides day, hard to work with, moody, yells at photographer, not a hair expert. To be honest I was so excited to work with Violet and so disappointed at how she handled herself. I am sure she used to be really into this job she did in the past but it seems she has lost her way because all I remember from my hair and makeup experience is a cranky makeup artist who kept checking her cell phone. Maybe she should regroup and figure out how she can be a kinder person with her job or take a break so she doesn't add a moody experience to any brides day. I honestly think the reason you don't see more poor reviews is because as a bride you don't want to go back to such an amazing memorable day and think about how certain services you paid for were not all that they were advertised to be but in reality, the reason I decided to write the review is in hopes that Violet regroups and doesn't do what she did to my family and I to another bride and also to warn brides of what could happen. read more

I hired the Makeup Dolls (Violet and her assistant Lisa) for our September 2012 wedding in Napa, CA. In my initial search, I was looking for someone who (a) provided a natural and customized hair/makeup look, (b) was comfortable to work with, and (c) was professional and organized. I had a fantastic experience with the Makeup Dolls and highly recommend them to any other brides. First of all, Violet hands-down is a great hair and makeup artist. She understood what I was looking for - natural with glam. I still wanted to feel and look like myself, but a bit more elevated for my wedding and the pictures. I rarely wear makeup and needed guidance. Violet was very nice and always explained what she was doing. Violet was able to work with my skin tone and facial features and nailed the look at our trial. I don't know how she did it - must be magic - she recreated this perfectly on the day of the wedding! I also used Violet for my engagement photo makeup, and she was able to create a different look. On the day of the wedding, Violet arrived on-time and stayed on schedule. I let my bridesmaids choose their own look. Violet was able to incorporate their individual tastes but still achieve a consistent look among the bridesmaids. She was flexible (allowing us to eat lunch before applying the final lipstick) and responsive (checking in throughout the makeup process to ensure we liked it). She was poised and professional and fun to work with. In case you are wondering about airbrushed foundation, I loved it. It was light and natural, and most importantly, it stuck. It was hot in Napa, and I shed some tears. The makeup did not budge! The only thing I needed to touch up was my lips. I just received the wedding pictures, and the hair and makeup look fabulous. I have received numerous compliments that the hair and makeup was "just perfect". I also wanted to note that Indiana at the Makeup Dolls handled all the bookings. She is detail oriented and organized and made things go smoothly. For example, there was rain predicted on the date of my engagement shoot. I hired the Makeup Dolls for my 8/19/2012 wedding in Healdsburg, CA. Overall I was very happy with their work. Violet was on-time and made sure we all stuck to our schedule (with 8 people and a noon deadline we started EARLY!) Indiana was my point of contact throughout the process and was very responsive over email which made my life easy. My hair was very simple but Violet gave me the exact relaxed, soft look I was going for. Where Violet really shined for my big day was the makeup. BEAUTIFUL. I got so many compliments and the pictures turned out amazing. Everything stayed in place despite the high heat and she even left me with extra lipstick and liner for touch-ups. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was the pricing. I didn't mind shelling out a premium price for my own hair and makeup but they originally quoted me $110 per bridesmaid, PER service. I ended up getting the price down to $90 but for such a simple style (soft curls worn down) it felt over priced. Also - my mother wanted to have her hair done too but since she has very short hair and they don't do blow-outs it turned out to be a waste of money in the end. If someone has very short hair I would recommend they do it themselves or go to a salon for a wash/blow-dry. read more

Cut to a few months ago, I was feverishly looking for a hair and makeup person that would make my sister's wedding day complete (and beautiful, of course). Some claimed to have gotten a severe infection, overcharged, bad service or a combination of the three. Yikes! I was definitely not going to take a chance with those businesses for my sister's important day. Then it was like Lady Luck decided to give me a break. I found a posting by Indiana on one of the Yelp forums. She sounded relaxed (unlike a few other pushy peeps in the biz), friendly and capable. You will be hard pressed to find anyone or any business for hair and makeup that's better than the Dolls. They are kind, competent, professional and consistently friendly. The Dolls showed up on-time, and were flexible and well-prepared. They were also fun! SO much fun to spend the day with! Violet let me elaborate on how I wanted my hair and makeup, and she really listened. She repeated back to me what I had asked for and explained how she was going to execute it. More importantly, she had the skills to really deliver. All my bridesmaids and my new Mom-to-be looked the best they have ever looked. They were so amazed with the Dolls' work, they were asking for makeup advice, and standing up straighter, batting their eye-lashes, and flipping their hair. You could tell they really were rocking their looks. And Violet did flawless hair and makeup on me that made me glad, oh sooo glad, I had picked her. So very rarely am I happy with pro makeup, and my wedding day was quite a nice day to to turn that around and be pleasantly surprised. The airbrush foundation kept my alcohol-induced cheek redness from showing through somehow, and my face looked flawless until the bitter end of my dance party reception. Worth every penny. Indiana and Violet do fantastic work! I hired them to do hair and makeup for my five bridesmaids, myself and my mother for my 12/1/12 wedding. They were on time and got started right on schedule. They were super sweet to be with all day, and everyone looked simply stunning once they were done. Violet is wonderful!! She made me, my mom, and my sister-in-law look fabulous for my wedding. She did my hair and makeup and both lasted the whole night. I've never looked better--honest. She and her sister Indiana are both so personable and friendly. I felt at ease immediately even though the world of beauty is a foreign one to me. They both listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly what I asked for. I had a trial with another makeup artist/hair stylist before trying The Makeup Dolls and gave her the same instructions as I gave Violet but the results were drastically different (i.e. just bad). The prices were a bit more than I had anticipated spending but after scouring the internet for a good makeup artist all the way from San Jose to San Mateo, I found that they really are in line with what other people charge. Plus, after seeing the results in person and in the photos, I definitely got my money's worth.
