Disappointing Experience at Urban Cookhouse - Clean Tables and Courtesy Lacking I usually enjoy eating out with family or friends, and I had heard decent things about Urban Cookhouse. The menu looked great online, and the location seemed perfect for a quick, casual meal. Unfortunately, my recent experience there left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't overly busy, but every single table we passed was either dirty or cluttered with used trays, cups, and napkins. We walked around the dining area several times looking for a place to sit, assuming that someone would soon come by to wipe a few of the tables down. After all, keeping the dining area clean should be a basic part of any restaurant's service. But to our surprise, not a single employee made any move to clean them. Some tables had been dirty long enough that the trash was starting to smell, which was not a great start to the meal. We waited politely for a few minutes, hoping someone might notice us standing with our food and come over to help. Still, nothing. It honestly felt like we were invisible. After a bit more walking around, we finally spotted a small table that looked clean--or at least cleaner than the rest. Relieved, we made our way over and set our trays down. We hadn't even had the chance to fully sit when an employee suddenly came over and scolded us for not sitting down quickly enough. The tone they used was unnecessarily harsh and rude. They didn't ask if we needed help or offer to clean a table for us earlier. Instead, the only time someone paid attention to us was to criticize us. It was confusing and upsetting, especially after how hard we had tried to find a decent place to sit in the first place. We weren't trying to make a scene or cause any trouble--we just wanted to eat our meal in peace. I'm not the type to complain easily, and I understand that restaurant work can be stressful. But this felt like a total lack of basic customer service. The staff seemed overwhelmed or disinterested, and it showed. The whole experience could have been different if someone had simply acknowledged us, helped us find a clean table, or spoken to us with even a little bit of kindness. We ended up finishing our meal quickly and left with a bad impression. The food itself was okay--not amazing, but decent enough--but the atmosphere and the treatment really ruined it for us. Cleanliness and courtesy go a long way in the food industry, and sadly, both were missing during our visit. I'm not sure I'll be returning anytime soon, and I wouldn't recommend Urban Cookhouse to others unless some serious improvements are made to the way guests are treated and how the space is maintained. read more

A growing franchise, there are 4 Urban Cookhouses scattered throughout Birmingham. Their commitment to "Buy Local, Eat Urban" is what they strive for in their food and support of the local community. This location in is very close to work so it is a frequent "lunch" favorite. Located in Crestline village right next door to Otey's, Urban Cookhouse has a spacious dining area (indoors and out) with a contemporary decor of dark muted colors yet they have very bright nice lighting. You place your order at the ordering counter then take a seat. Service is spot on. Everyone there is always very friendly and greets everyone who comes through the front door with a smile and hello. I will have to confirm just for my own curiosity, but their website reports that they prepare their meats on the Big Green Egg using local hickory wood and lump charcoal allowing their pork, steak, shrimp and turkey to be packed with flavor without the added fat. I couldn't tell, but steak that I ordered wasn't the most tender cut of steak I've ever had, but I wasn't expecting it either. It did however have a nice flavor. Menu options are simple and somewhat varied. There's a little taste of everything except fish and burgers. There's sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups and some entree specials such as steak & rice, pork, grilled chicken, shrimp kabobs and quesadillas. I have tried their chicken salad. It is a solid 8. Made in-house with lettuce and tomatoes in a sandwich it is quite tasty. Yom Yom. I have also tried the shrimp kabob which turned out to be about a 5. A nice portion of mixed greens, large slices of cucumber, red onions, and grape tomatoes then sprinkled with cheese, the accompanying garden salad with their vinaigrette was quite good as salads go. You also get a cute little orange roll. The rice pilaf was nothing to write home about but had a decent flavor. However, the shrimp was way overcooked to the point of being almost rubbery. A shame since the marinade on it was so good. The grilled squash on the skewer were good too. I have also tried another entree meal, the Lime-Marinated Steak and Rice. As mentioned earlier, the steak was cooked a nice medium and had good flavor. Could I tell if it was cooked on a Green Egg? No. Tammy tried the El Cubano. Sandwich bread packed with grilled pork and ham and provolone, it was a good sandwich Tammy said. Sarah tried the Turkey Crunch. Another sandwich made with smoked turkey, tomatoes, marinated slaw & provolone on wheat bread, this sandwich also tasted quite good. Finally, I ordered the veggie soup for my To-Go order, but instead I got cream of broccoli. It was a serendipitous mistake because I ended up enjoying the cream of broccoli very much. I contacted the store and was greeted with nasty, disrespect and yelling by someone who claimed to be a GM. I asked him to provide the owners name he refused, asked to have the owner contact me; he refused and he refused to return my money. I even asked for clearer directions to potentially come to the store and he refused. I refuse to eat food from an establishment where the "GM" has the right to speak to me as if I am his subordinate. I have contacted this store through the Urban Cookhouse website and still have not received my refund from Neil Patel. Neil I want my refund, I called in a timely manner to cancel and your manager degraded and disrespected me. My mother was new to the concept and when I asked the person at the register to explain it she said she didn't know and even though no one was behind us rushed us to order. When the person brought out our food her thumb was two inches deep in my salad and one taco was resting on her forearm so obviously those portions weren't eaten. The steak was AWFUL & CHEWY. The manager offered to fix it and took BOTH PORTIONS OF STEAK for the salad but only brought back one portion and when I asked I was dismissed that it was correct even though it was obviously incorrect. This is the first time I'd visited UC in Mountain Brook. The first time I went to UC was 3 years ago at the Summit... and can you believe that those roasted veggies is something I have had a memory of for all this time? I tried to replicate it at home and though I'm close, those roasted veggies can't be beat. This time, I decided to go for their Grilled Chicken Special. I LOVED how they did their chicken; great marinade and very tender. Chicken can sometimes be dry, but they did it right here. It came with a delicious and perfect compliment of rice and a salad. A full plate of food for under $8. What a deal! Oh, I almost forgot- it included one of those orange rolls. It's like a mildly sweet, orange flavored non cinnamon roll dinner roll (if this makes any sense at all!). Unfortunately, it was hard and room temp. It's always been soft and warm in the past... I could tell this one had been out for a bit after it was possibly overdone. My husband had the El Cubano and of course I had to have a bite of his sandwich. It says on the menu that it is served with white bread. I obviously overlooked that tidbit. To me, it's a little odd to have a Cuban sandwich makings inside of white, buttered toast. I prefer the authentic way with pressed crusty bread. I can't say I will ever order that one on my own. As for service, it was great. Nothing to complain about, friendly and fast. The restaurant itself looked like it had a busy lunch service before we got there... but it was at 60% capacity when we actually went in. The evidence? For some reason I want to call it urban Cowboy. Anyway, I pulled over and made an order online. When I saw that my order would be ready in 15 minutes, I stopped for gas before heading over to pick up order. Everything was ready except the milkshake which was in process. That was ok since I was assured it hadn't been sitting around. I had the lime-marinated steak and rice dinner. It was really good. It was two meals for me. I am a fan of all of the Urban Cookhouses. And my latest visit was my first to this location. The one thing I have noticed among all location are that the quality is consistent and the staff is friendly. You always know what your going to get. I try and sway from my regular (and I might have on a few occasions). But my trips here are few and far between. So when I read that Urban Cowboy description, I am sucked in every time. The meat is always flavorful and tender. And the onions are phenomenal. I am a fan of their hot cheddar pasta, which is their take on mac and cheese. And although I am a sucker for steak, I love a good broccoli salad and theirs is on point. I have always heard good things about their cookie. But I am not big on the sweets. Especially at lunch which is the only time I have gone. And honestly might be the only time I will go since it is a solid lunch place in my mind. I accidentally placed my order in the wrong location. I am from out of town and made a mistake. When I arrived at the wrong one- they told me to called and speak with the manager about a refund. A young girl answered and she was very nice. I heard her ask her manager on the phone and he was really ugly about it- I'm sure thinking that I could not hear. As manager he would not get on the phone and tell me that he would not refund me- but made the young girl do it. I had to repeat order 4 sandwiches- over a $100 for 4 sanwhiches tonight. So whoever the manager was at the Mountainbrook location in Birmingham, AL on the evening of 8/10 at 7:30 pm- poor leaderships and other places would have shown grace and refunded me. Got a pickup order here recently, so this review is specifically for this location. Definitely consistent with other locations I've tried. (I order the same thing everywhere, so I know!) We love coming to the urban cookhouse in mountain brook! The food always is on point and this visit was no different. The place wasn't too crowded so we got to pick where we wanted to sit. We ordered a California chicken sandwich, the shrimp quesadilla, and two kid orders of chicken. The food came out hot and rather quickly. It was the first time I had the quesadilla and it was LOADED! The shell was grilled perfectly with a little crisp and it was accompanied with guac (which was creamy and really good), sour cream, and salsa. I've never had a bad experience at any of the Urban Cookhouse locations, and the food is always good - but for some reason it just never seems GREAT. It's all fresh, and some food is locally grown. I think I don't like how their menu feels limited. They have several main flavor combinations, and then you basically decide if you want a salad or sandwich version. I used to get the urban cowboy, but it's very difficult to eat. I've switched to the pork sandwiches, and they're pretty good. I've also enjoyed one or two of their salads before. I ordered to-go today, and when I picked up I saw a new specials menu - I'm hoping some of these items are good. read more

This is my favorite location to go to when wanting Urban Cookhouse. Parking isn't too bad but the main thing I like about this location is the atmosphere, it is open and not cramped at all. Their dressing I always buy a bottle of when I go there bc I am addicted to it and so happy the sell it at their locations. They support local farmers which I am all about. My favorite thing to get here is the "Berry Good" Salad. The fruit has always been SUPER fresh and love the combination of the sweet and spicy pecans, feta cheese and house dressing. Came here this past week for a little lunch date with my 17 month old and we had a great time! I ordered the hot cheddar pasta as a side, little disappointed to find out it was just a dish of "Mac n' cheese" that my wife ordered for our son as well. I was pleased with the sandwich, as for the soup it tasted like it had a spaghetti sauce base and was not that good IMO. I (the mother in law) ordered the chicken salad and fruit plate. Ate hear for lunch today. Was a little confused about the seating process but there are signs that point you in opposite directions depending on if if you're picking up an order or dining in. The menu has a variety of sandwiches and small plates. I tried the elcubano which came with pulled pork and sliced ham, included provolone cheese and a soft bun. As far as sides you can opt for a salad, a cheesy pasta, fresh fruit or veggies. I tried the veggies. The sandwich was delicious and the bun was complimentary. The veggies were a little over cooked but still had a nice flavor and were enjoyable. While we were there I did notice a gentleman that consistently checked on guest. I'm not sure if he was the owner but he did an excellent job making sure that everyone enjoyed everything and prebussing tables. Sandwiches and plates range anywhere between $9-14 which is fair. I'm not sure if there was any specific lunch menu in place but I don't believe that I saw one so that addition would be nice. I'm giving this place 4 stars bc even though someone is monitoring the dining area and checking in there is no real wait staff so refills and fetching additional condiments seems to be left to the customer. I would recommend this place specifically the Cuban sandwich and would return myself. read more

A very enjoyable lunch spot. Spent a weekend in B'ham and hit this spot up for lunch. Very quick, clean, and convenient. I had the Cuban and while the pork wasn't overly flavorful (billed as Chipotle) the combo made a nice sandwich with the tasty ham and house made pickles. My wife had ham sliders that she liked a lot.
