Monday was the beginning of TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK, and it was celebrated with the tastiest lunch! I searched two other Urban Cookhouse restaurants to ensure I find THE ONE, so they would each know that this particular establishment deserves kudos! There was a choice between steak and chicken lunch with rice, salad, and cinnamon roll for dessert. Although I surely thought the grilled chicken was tender, well-seasoned, and simply delicious, those who chose steak made comparable compliments. My husband, friends, and I must become guests of this Urban Cookhouse. We did not know what we were missing. Service is always great, food as well but this last visit today(12-16-2024) I was very displeased and disappointed in the quality of my salad. Salads should always be fresh because a salad that is going bad could real make a person sick and that could lead to alot of things. Pretty good little walk up and order place. Not overly loud and plenty of seating. I got the Buffalo chicken wrap and salad- it was pretty good, not amazing but good, and my hubby got the white bbq chicken sandwich and thought it was good. My daughter recommended another great spot. This location was very clean. We visited during COVID. The staff was constantly walking around making sure the tables and floor were clean. They even offered to empty your tray if you were finish eating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We asked several questions since it was our first visit. The cashier answered them all with a smile and provided recommendations. The food was delicious! Every order is made fresh. Our sandwiches were hot and had great flavor. First visit: I actually loved the food! I ordered the cookhouse/cookout wrap (Bacon, avocado, lettuce). It was so good. For my side I had roasted veggies (Broccoli, zucchini, squash, cauliflower,). Traveling to Birmingham after playing softball tournaments all weekend and needing something "good" not ball park food we checked yelp and found the Urban Cookhouse. First off we were greeted outside in the parking area and directed to a back entrance which was nice. I ordered the Lime Marinated Steak and Rice, my wife had the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and my daughter the Wood Fired Shrimp Kabob. Food was excellent! All of it. Salad was crisp and best vegetables. I visited Urban Cookhouse for an After-Hours event for a meal, a drink and a speaker. Truth be known, I attended solely because I wanted to check out Urban Cookhouse. Upon arrival, traffic flow was well thought out and guests follow the wall around to place orders before entering the dining area. The noise level was a little higher than one would expect, and I subtracted a star for the noise level. I had requested a gluten safe meal, and the server suggested one of the generous house salads with fresh fruit and greens, minus the chicken which may contain gluten. UC's claim to fame is the locally sourced food and quick service. They exceeded expectations with fresh ingredients, and fast service. The salad dressing was a sweet and sour combination with surprise orange juice! Although I did not think I would enjoy it - I absolutely did. The other guests at my table looked at my salad and announced they wished they had ordered the salad! UC also serves beer and wine. Their dark red wine was a perfect pinot noir. Typically when I come here, I order the White BBQ Sandwich (grilled chicken with Alabama's famous white sauce) which comes with one house-made side , but this time I wanted something lighter. I opted for the chicken quesadilla. It comes with a side of fresh salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. It wasn't as good as the white bbq sandwich. The chicken was a little chewy in the quesadilla, but the fresh ingredients in the overall dish made up for it. Because I was trying to be healthy, I decided not to get housemade Lemonade, which is delish, or the brown sugar brownie, which I really really wanted. Next time, I'm going all the way in . My coworker had a veggie quesadilla with shrimp and I was quite jealous of how fresh the veggies looked, but I'm not sure if getting the shrimp added was worth it. I went to the Northside location for Strawberry Day, lured by the promise of strawberry lemonade milkshakes and free t-shirts. I didn't get any food, but I could fill up a page singing the praises of this milkshake. I don't even have much of a sweet tooth, but the strawberry lemonade milkshake hit all the right notes - tangy, sweet, and rich, combining the best qualities of a slushy and ice cream. I never wanted it to end. I can't wait to go back for another. Store was very clean. From what I understand, this location is fairly new. My only complaint is that staff seemed harried (might have had something to do with Strawberry Day), and the milkshake took a littler longer to prepare than I expected. This is a great addition on the north side of downtown. I went in the first week and they had a pretty substantial crowd. The setup of this place is really nice as you follow the wall around to place your order as not to disturb diners that are eating in. Nice computerized menu board with great new selections for downtown employees! I decided to try the Cookhouse wrap (wheat) and the a salad. Nice first choice! I got a wrap for something out of the box and I really liked it--probably wouldn't do wheat again but the tastes were on point with creamy avocado and bacon of course. Needed a little more moisture so I added a little of my honey mustard dressing from the salad. I went again the next week (pattern forming) and tried the El Cubano which was really good as well. Loved the toasted bread with spicy mustard. I ordered the cheddar pasta side which was decent. Went late afternoon after a call ahead so I was in and out quickly. Their staff has been really friendly and aggressive at being helpful. That's always appreciated. Glad this place is steps away from the job now. read more

Had lunch at Urban Cookhouse at 1801 5th Ave N location today (3/16/17). Ordered the BALT (Applewood bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomatoes with aioli on toasted white bread) comes with a side, drink not included. My side was roasted veggies and ordered a soft drink / tea. Get a cup go get what you want from the fountain or tea bins. Sandwich with side $7.75, drink $2.19, total with tax $10.93. Ate in and food arrived in normal time. The bread was grilled very nicely but the sandwich looked very thin. It looked as if there was almost nothing between the slices of bread. What was there, five half strips of bacon, one yes! only one piece of lettuce which was paper thin, two very thin slices of tomato, two small pieces of avocado (less than a quarter of an avocado) that were mushy, but that was because it was grilled, with aioli sauce. Nothing was sticking out of the edges of the sandwich. In fact, all the edges of one piece of bread were touching all the edges of the other. What was there tasted good but for $10.93 I expected much more. After all this was Urban Cookhouse! I should have taken a picture. I was very disappointed with the sandwich.The roasted veggie side was ok to good, slightly undersized portion. That was because it is served in a small dish. What I was expecting was the same grilled bread with at least a half an avocado, six to eight half strips of bacon, with two thick slices of tomato, all on three nice leaves of lettuce. With none of the edges of one piece of bread touching the other. My lunch partner order the chicken salad sandwich with fruit salad side and a drink, similar price. His chicken salad was a generous amount and squeezed out when picked up and bitten into. Fruit salad (same dish as veggie side) was piled high. He said it tasted good and the fruit was fresh. None of the bread edges were touching. What I did notice was the store was very clean, inviting, modern, and tidy. Counter and seating area staff were everywhere almost to the point of too many. Maybe spend a little less on staff and more on food? read more

The Food is delicious (try the BALT and add turkey, or the cuban, or really just anything) and the staff are always so helpful and friendly!
