Patrick installed a vent hood over our stove. As we didn't have a vent this included installing all the venting. After getting information on the project and a few photos of the installation site he sent a very reasonable quote. On the day he came to do the installation we realized that I had missed the fact that we have solar panels over the part of the roof where he would need to install the vent. Patrick very quickly adapted to routing the vent out through the wall, including getting the new supplies this would require. When I contacted Dehn, I sent him photos of the three things I needed addressed so he could give me an honest assessment as to whether he could repair them and, to get a quote. After seeing the projects in person, Dehn confirmed that would fix the issues. He did a good job replacing a wood strip separating the carpet from the wood kitchen floor. And, he repaired a small 6" board on the deck which just need to be bolstered but not replaced. The third problem was the door to the outside deck. It had a space under the door and by the door's hinge down by the bottom where air was coming in. Despite weather-stripping, I still had to insert a towel under there to keep cold air and dust from coming into the house. Dehn put a sweep at the bottom of the door and installed new weather stripping (which I paid for) on both sides of the frame. That stopped the air from coming in at the bottom of the door. But when he showed me what he had done and then shut the door as if the project was complete, I opened it back up because I noticed that there was approx. a 5" slit of light coming through at the top of the door. And, that there was a 2" gap at the very top where there was no weather-stripping. (Something Dehn did not even bother to acknowledge until I asked him about it. I could only assume that he cut the weather-stripping too short.) I pushed on the door and the light disappeared. In other words, because of Dehn's efforts, the door no longer closed properly. Dehn assured me that what I am seeing is just a minor slit; that no air would leak into the house. Well, the first windy day, just a few days later, wind whistled through that "minor slit" like a high-pitched girl in distress. I held up a sheet of paper by the area and it fluttered. When I contacted Dehn about it, he said that I could either buy a storm door and he would install it for $160 or, for an additional $145, that he would "retrofit" the weather-stripping. I would have like to think that he would have "retrofit" the weather-stripping when he was here so that the job would have been done properly... the first time. There are 68 condos in my HOA; 2 condos to a building. Most everyone used the same contractor for years until he moved out of state. He made a great living just servicing these 68 condos. He was thorough and honest. When he left, he said that in good conscience, there was no one he knew that he could recommend. Since then, several of us in the HOA have used contractors through Angie's List and Home Advisor, with poor results. And now, from this latest experience of mine, the same result via Yelp. - I stuck a 2" piece of weather-stripping on the door where there was none and caulked around it. I then shaved a small slice off the weather-stripping on the lower hinge side of the door. The door shuts tight and there are no more leaks. It took me 5 minutes. read more
