I was craving Indian curry and this Marcos Spice place came up, and I was like Marcos is a Mexican name, but the pictures and the reviews on Yelp kept raving about this butter chicken. Sooo... I went. I almost never do food trucks but I stepped out of my comfort zone and boy am I soo happy I did! The owner, Lee, is amazing!!!! He makes everything himself, and his sauces are from scratch. He showed me his spices, so I know he is the real deal Holyfield! I mean them spices looked like you might slap ya mammy! And that butter chicken sauce was soooo scrumdiddlyumptious!!!! I will go wherever he is to have more. Lee and his awesome sauces are at R Bar, Little Woodrow's on White Oak, and Tikila's various nights. I think like 6-midnight. If I remember correctly. Anyway! Al's is a convenience store with a solid counter option for a meal. Parking is easy: they've got a couple of reserved spots out front plus a shared lot across the street you can pay for. Inside, there's a good amount of seating, with tables that fit up to four people. We ordered the gyro quesadilla, the half-and-half plate, and two gyro sandwiches with a side of fries. The gyro meat was definitely the star compared to the chicken shawarma, so naturally the quesadilla and sandwiches became our favorites. Surprisingly though, the quesadilla was the standout- the gooey cheese with the gyro was absolute perfection. The chicken shawarma was unfortunately extremely dry. Prices are decent, and the garlic sauce paired well with everything. I just wish we had gotten more than one, since all the other sauces were tzatziki.

I've tried many combo platters over the years and they all generally taste similar, but this version is unlike anything I've tried before. The dish contains a unique pickled flavor that brings out the rice and veggies. The gyro also tastes uniquely savory. I wish I took a better pic but I came here on a time crunch. Having a great gyro spot on Washington Ave is so fitting. Nothing hits harder than fast food after a night out, and Big Bite will serve as an unexpected blessing to those that stumble across it. It's no secret that good food trucks tend to look very barebones, but I still find it comical that the owners don't even have a menu to view. They nonchalantly suggested that I look for a photo on their Google Maps location instead. Rest assured, their food more than makes up for their lackluster appearance. I would love to give 5 stars but I paid an otherworldly price for my combo platter. $18 is the steepest I've ever seen an establishment charge, and it would've run me about $20 if I paid with card instead of cash. I guess the only problem with it is that some of the food trucks come and go, so if you fall in love with one particular truck or a couple of them, don't expect them to be around forever, because that may not be the case. These four examples were some amazing food trucks that don't seem to be here anymore. And it's sad that they're no longer in business.

If that's not Houston in a nutshell, I don't know what is. The place sports a casual vibe with a clean and bright interior. It's been practically empty with every visit, but I suspect the takeout game is strong here. There is limited parking in the back of the restaurant and the narrow alleyway entrance is somewhat easy to miss. Food wise, I am not disappointed. Their cheese cachapa is the stuff of dreams and includes a number of stuffings from ham to shredded chicken / beef. My vote is for their pabellón, which is a nice combination of shredded beef, black beans, and sweet plantains. For cheese lovers, the double cheese is perfectly indulgent with the sweetness of the cornmeal. The main draw for me was the arepas, which is something I missed having had so much of it back in NYC. La Pelua (shredded beef, mixed shredded cheese) is one of my go-tos, but my all-time favorite is the reina pepiada, a shredded chicken mixed with avocado topped with sprinkled salty white cheese. It's a staple in the Venezuelan arepa game and while their version is very solid, I'm just extremely thankful that it's available. Their breakfast platters are a big draw, which mainly consist of scrambled egg combos paired with arepas and various proteins. I think their yuca buñelos, tequeños, patacones, and especially their mandocas are incredibly underrated. The latter is practically dessert since it's mashed plantains with the cachapa stuffed with sugar and cheese. While they're not known for their empanadas, I do think their cazon (#2) is unique and their potato and cheese is always hearty. The shredded beef is a nice alternative to their arepas or arepitas (side) and make for an excellent snack on the go. Fans of Venezuelan cuisine who find themselves in the inner loop owe them a visit and I highly recommend calling ahead of time to ensure they have items available and to get a jump on the wait time for takeout. My lunch date ordered the Casablanca bowl which consisted of roasted lamb and said the lamb was a little on the dry side with an overly gamey taste and would not recommend it. I ordered a Create Your Own Bow ($12.95) with Saffron Jasmine rice, and 6 veggie choices: fava bean hummus, cucumber tomato, sweet potato, lentils, roasted cauliflower, egg potato salad, and for an additional $3.50, the Potato cakes. The Potato cakes had a very soft and almost mushy inside texture. I didn't mind and thought it was good with the Harissa Aioli sauce. However, my veggie options were on the bland side so I had to purchase additional sauce for my bowl. I wish the menu allowed for 7 options instead of 6 since the scoops are very small. When I went over to the other counter for some cookies and gelato, the staff there were too busy talking to each other to help. When I asked for help, they didn't seem too keen on it so I skipped dessert and left. The concept is great, the casual decorative ambiance is fantastic, and the food is pretty good. However, the customer service is hit or miss. Note: There's a few two-top tables for outdoor seating. Also, parking in the front is very limited and can be a hectic during peak hours.
