This place is a blend of fast food service with whole food restaurant quality dishes. The place is set up to make ordering and pick up quick and easy. Seating is plentiful, but it is a seat yourself place, with cafeteria style utensils and water. The food is fresh, well prepared and priced accordingly for the dishes. Ate here 2 weeks ago. The food was cold and my chicken looked like it was in the fryer for a couple days. Then today 5/21 my girlfriend ate the chicken sandwich and it gave her food poisoning. Had a great dinner last night at Urban Plates. I appreciated the plentiful parking (spaces could be bigger), easy ordering and right now they have a half off deal on bottles of wine! We got a bottle of Ammunition pinot noir for less than $21! I shared a cheeseburger with fries, added brussel sprouts for $3 (was surprised they crammed it all on one plate so it seems you get less fries) and the braised short ribs with my sister. Short ribs and mashed potatoes were great. Cheeseburger plate was okay. Burger was just OK, no char and bland. Great, easy dinner break from holiday shopping if you are in the UTC area. read more

We split the steak plate and our two sides were organic, the beet salad with goat cheese with rustic bread and the carrots and beets. We asked for the steak to be cooked medium well. Went this past Friday with my husband for dinner. We've never been here, so we were excited to try something new. Both of us were eyeing the braised short ribs. I had asked if it was enough for two if we got a starter and some soup. The girl taking my order just shrugged her shoulders. So we went ahead and placed two orders along with some mushrooms and ditched the soup. The short ribs came out and yes, one order when have been plenty for two. As for the mushrooms, not sure if we got the last of them but a very small plate, maybe 8 to 10 small mushrooms. Everything did have great flavor. We thought the prices were reasonable... however I am tired of dinner spots where you order at the counter, get a number and then find a table. Been here several times in the few years and the last time was a little disappointed. The last time I was here, some of the food was overly salted, but this time it was much better. I'm glad I gave them another try! Everything was lightly salted and perfect today. We ordered online for pickup for 11 people, everything was done in 30 mins, 100% correct orders, and it was still nice and hot when we dug in. Looked them up online and found that they make everything from scratch and even have fresh fruit beverages as well as witnessed by my watermelon pineapple mint basil drink. I ordered the chimichurri steak and it was cooked beautifully. And no gristle at all. Probably the cheapest best tasting steak I have had anywhere that was under $20 bucks. Decided to grab Christmas Eve dinner here thanks to my wifey! Located around University City area, this place is a neat little spot to grab some good food! Since it was the Eve, it wasn't too crowded and we got our food fast. They have a small seating area where u order but the main dining area is just outside. They have heaters so u won't be cold. Overall, the food was good for the price. The steak I got was cooked to my likings and it was good. It made a nice Christmas Eve dinner. I ordered takeout from this place and if I hadn't checked my order before leaving, I would've gone home missing an entire side they forgot to include. When I opened the box and asked where the mac & cheese was, the employee just laughed and said "you're embarrassing me" to the cook instead of apologizing. She turned away laughing with her coworkers while they were all messing around in the kitchen without apologizing or acknowledging me. It was completely unprofessional and nobody cared. One of the girl staff members was laughing and went to the back, then took the scooper from the cook and started serving my mac and cheese, dropping some of it all over the floor. The cook then told her to get out, which made it clear she was not supposed to be in that area. I'm not sure if she was trying to flirt with him or what was going on, but the whole interaction was inappropriate and unprofessional, especially happening right in front of paying customers. Let alone unhygienic. The food itself was awful. The cauliflower tasted old and was cold. The "mac & cheese" was basically plain noodles sitting in watery sauce. The bread was stale and hard as a rock. It was genuinely disgusting and not worth the $27 I spent. I ended up throwing most of it away. Between the poor customer service, the employees joking around the entire time, and the low quality food, this place felt unsanitary and badly managed. Whoever owns this restaurant seriously needs to hire staff with actual customer service skills and pay attention to food quality. read more

As I inch towards my 40s and encounter more health issues, I've been starting to crave salads and more fresh healthy foods. When I saw Urban Plates was nearby UCSD where I had an appointment I immediately plugged it into my GPS! Thankfully parking was easy during 2 pm ish because La Jolla can get busy. The menu is a little pricey but I've gotten used to paying more for healthy ingredients. I ordered the beets and avocado salad and wanted protein with it and splurged a bit and added tofu for $5. Overall the bowl was delicious the beets were the right consistency and the avocado was sweet and creamy and the Caesar like dressing on the avocado and coleslaw was to die for. And there was even a few walnuts thrown in which added a nice crunchy texture. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars and not 5 is the tofu was tough and a little too chewy. The chili flavor was on point but there was something about the texture that I couldn't get past. And $5 extra for tofu! That just seemed a little excessive. Overall a meal for 1 at $20 isn't totally bad but I understand for those on a budget that is a treat. But no worries! I still loved the place and will be back once I'm in the area again. We came to La Jolla from Orange County for a doctors appointment. Before heading back we stopped at Urban Plates for dinner. The outside patio was pretty busy but welcomely warm and well lit. This was my husband's first time dining in at Urban Plates and he was a little overwhelmed with all the choices but Fellipe was super patient and sweet answering all his questions.
