15 YEARS OF MARRIAGE... AND WE CELEBRATED BY FINALLY EATING SOMEWHERE WE'VE DRIVEN PAST A MILLION TIMES. Well, well, well... Urban Plates, look at you finally getting our attention! For our 15th anniversary, my wife and I decided to sneak away for a little lunch date. We wanted something relatively light because we were trying to save room--and more importantly, ENERGY--for dinner later. Ya know... because apparently 15 years of marriage comes with a limited daily battery percentage. I've driven past Urban Plates more times than I can count. I've driven past the restaurant, past the parking lot, probably past the same parking space I should've parked in 100 times... and NEVER stopped. Today we were on a "try what you see, don't cry about it" type of adventure. So here we are! Walking in, the setup immediately caught my attention. At first glance, I see what looks like a fresh-brewed coffee station. Then I realized... WAIT A MINUTE... THEM ARE BREWSKIES! Yes, they have beer. Now THAT'S how you sneak up on somebody. We weren't completely sure what we wanted, but luckily they have a kiosk that makes ordering pretty simple. You can scroll through the options and actually see pictures of what you're ordering, which I appreciate. Because sometimes restaurant descriptions will have you thinking you're ordering some gourmet masterpiece and then your plate arrives looking like it needs a therapist. Prices were decent. A little higher than some quick-service spots, but honestly, considering the atmosphere, presentation, and overall experience, I felt it was worth it. And yes... I've been on my old-man hype lately. I've been missing my big newspapers and everything. Give me a newspaper, some coffee, and a comfortable chair and I'll start complaining about gas prices within 11 minutes. ANYWAY... BACK TO THE FOOD! I ordered the salmon, well done, with the smoked/grilled preparation, potato medley, macaroni and cheese, and a side of aioli. And yes, I know what you're thinking... "Isn't this dude supposed to be eating keto?" Listen. IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY. The keto police can come find me later. I also grabbed the Dragon Fruit Strawberry Refresher, which was pretty refreshing and went nicely with the meal. The food didn't take too long to come out. The salmon was good. The potatoes? Then came the Mac & Cheese. And this is where the plot thickened... Literally. Because the Mac came out cold. I stared at it. It stared back. We both knew this relationship wasn't going anywhere. It started out like a bad date--cold, awkward, and leaving me questioning my life choices. But then Ms. Christine noticed my face and stepped right in. She was extremely helpful, polite, and genuinely sweet about the situation. She took the bowl back and brought me a fresh one. Did she throw the first bowl away? I hope so. I'm kidding! But the replacement? THE RETURN OF THE MAC. NOW WE'RE TALKING! The second Mac & Cheese was much better. Nice breadcrumb crust on top, creamy cheese sauce, and plenty enjoyable. I honestly think the sauce may have been vegan , but at that point I wasn't conducting a scientific investigation. I was eating. But honestly, the food wasn't even the biggest reason I'm giving this place five stars. It was the customer service. I left feeling noticed, welcomed, and appreciated. And THAT matters. Things happen. Food can come out wrong. Nobody is perfect. What makes the difference is how someone handles it when something does go sideways. Christine handled it with kindness and professionalism, and I really appreciated that. So our first Urban Plates experience just happened to land on our 15th wedding anniversary. Not a bad way to discover a new spot. There are still plenty of things on the menu I want to try, so yes... I'll be back. If you've never been, give Urban Plates a shot. Healthy food, quick service, a comfortable atmosphere, plenty of options, and a staff that actually makes you feel like they're happy you showed up. And apparently... BEER. So Urban Plates, congratulations. After all these years of me driving past you, you finally got me through the door. And now that I've eaten here, I have only one question: WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?! -- Cute concept, but the food needs some personality I picked Urban Plates because it looked like a nice, healthier option, especially since Sean is doing keto and I was trying to find somewhere that worked for both of us. The inside is cute, modern, and has that polished "healthy California food" look. Once we ordered from the kiosk and sat down, though, I realized this is basically fast food for healthy food--just with a much higher price tag. I ordered the Braised Beef & Mushroom Bowl with mashed potatoes. It looked like a substantial bowl, but there were maybe six tiny pieces of beef in the entire thing. I spent most of the meal eating mashed potatoes and floppy onions, wondering where the rest of the beef went. And the seasoning? Practically nonexistent. It needed salt, flavor, personality... something. Sean got the salmon and actually liked his meal, and he'd definitely come back. He makes this kind of food at home all the time, though, and even he said he would have seasoned it more. So clearly I'm not the target audience here. We also ordered the mac and cheese to share, and that arrived ice cold. Not "could use another minute" cold. Refrigerator cold. We sent it back, they made a fresh one, and about ten minutes later it came out piping hot. The woman helping us was very nice and even gave us a cookie for the trouble, so I appreciated how they handled the mistake. The bathroom, unfortunately, was another story. It was filthy, and I have pictures to prove it. For a restaurant with such a clean, polished dining area, the condition of the bathroom was a pretty jarring contrast. Overall, the food wasn't bad. It just wasn't good enough for the price. I can make this kind of healthy food at home, season it properly, and probably put a whole lot more beef in my bowl. Sean would come back. I wouldn't. But I'll give them this: the concept is solid, the restaurant is cute, and there's a Cold Stone right next door, so at least I know where I'm going for dessert. read more

The ambience in here is nice, but the food was a bit disappointing. We stopped by because we were looking for something healthy for lunch during our afternoon out. I normally don't go for a Caesar salad, but it sounded crisp and refreshing. I opted for a piece of salmon and a cup of the tomato basil soup. My salmon was so overcooked and dry that it was a shame. I could've more easily overlooked it, but my salad dressing was also quite sparse, so the whole meal was kind of dry. The tomatoes on the salad had zero flavor. That is surprising being that we are in the bread basket of the United States and all of the produce here is usually amazing. I did think that the grilled bread that came with it was delicious. I was also disappointed in the tomato basil soup. It was very sweet. I know they typically will put a touch of sugar in there to balance out some of the tartness, but it was over the top. The people that worked there were very nice and they were doing a great job keeping the restaurant clean. I've been to Urban Plates before in a different market and thought it was quite good. I would try them one more time, but obviously the salmon and Caesar salad is not the dish to order there. read more

Came to Urban Plates for the first time for lunch with my girlfriend. It looked liked a really good healthy option, so we decided to go there. Tried this place out for a quick lunch & it's located in a very busy area, so it can be easy to get lost. Thankfully, the parking lot was pretty big, so I was able to find a spot near the back. Upon walking up, I saw that there was a menu by the door for you to browse, along with a ton of outdoor seating. The inside of the restaurant was huge & very vibrant, with a relaxed vibe. You have the option of ordering with the host in front, at a kiosk, or at your table. We decided to order at the kiosk & were then told by the hostess that if we wanted water, it would be available at the self-serve station. We chose our table & went over to grab our waters, utensils, napkins, & pepper. Our food arrived shortly after. My tomato basil soup with pesto was pretty good, packed with tons of flavor & great for something small. My friend enjoyed her shrimp dish, but said she wasn't really a fan of the veggie medley. We finished our food pretty quickly & a worker walked up to offer us waters to go, which was really sweet since I had a long drive back! To finish things off, we got the huge chocolate chunk cookie, & that definitely hit the spot when I got home. Overall, this restaurant was a nice find with a lot of healthy options. We've been passing by Urban Plates for a while and finally decided to give it a try for lunch today. I'm so glad we did because everything was simply amazing! The restaurant is spacious, clean, and has a nice outdoor dining area that's dog-friendly, which is always a plus. I also liked that you can either order at the counter or use one of their self-order kiosks. After placing your order, you grab a table number, find a seat, and they bring your food and drinks right to your table. Our server was super friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. Now for the food! There are so many delicious options on the menu, and the prices are great for the portion sizes. The servings are just right--not too much and not too little. My husband ordered the chimichurri steak with mashed potatoes, and I got the chicken tenders with fries and mac and cheese. We both really enjoyed our meals. The only minor thing I wasn't a fan of was that the bread was soft. We personally prefer our bread toasted, but that's just our preference. Everything else was fantastic. Before leaving, we couldn't resist checking out the dessert case--it all looked so delicious! I ordered the chocolate vanilla lava cake, and my husband got the banana cream pie. A good lunch or dinner option with a little bit of everything for everyone. I ordered the grilled steak salad, and my boyfriend ordered the plate of grilled steak and sides. The salad was great and the portion of steak was also good. We did expect a bigger serving of the steak for the plated option, especially for the price. On the menu online it looks to be more, but that of course is also what happens at most places. They have a self service ordering kiosk, or you can order at the counter. The restaurant is busy with lots of chatter and laughing, but not overly too loud to that you cant hear yourself think. They also have patio seating for the warmer months. read more

Who is really happy when I heard that Urban Plates was coming to use Sacramento. I had Diane there many times in La Jolla while visiting UC San Diego. This chain is amazing in that they provide so many options. We would go with a group of people and everybody could order something completely different and customize it even if it wasn't on the menu. I always really enjoyed the Brad beef and mushrooms over potatoes in the winter time and the salad is in the summer. Now that Urban places any, Sacramento have been trying to stop by at least once a month. I've discovered this spotlight chef items which are quite a deal. I didn't feel like having a Cobb salad, but you can substitute the chicken for beef for $1.50 up charge or substitute it with Aji tuna for no up charge and switch out the sauces in the vegetables. I ended up getting a steak salad just the way I want it for three dollars cheaper than it would've been if I ordered the steak salad off the menu and it contain things I didn't want. I like urban Plate's organic grass fed beef, , and roasted beets in my salad so much better than the same ingredients famous salad place that just opened in the same mall which charges way more for pretty much the same salad I ordered today. This is a great place to come with a bunch of people because there's so much room and you don't have to worry about splitting the bill cause you can just go up and each person get their own order and pay for their own. I also like that kiosk to order from or ordering from the table with the QR code because I can take my time to decide the different items that I want to substitute. Urban Plates is in a great location and was the perfect spot for lunch with my son on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. The food was excellent, with a wide variety of selections to choose from. I really liked the modern setup--you can either order directly from the staff at the walk-up counter or use the electronic ordering kiosks, which makes the process quick and convenient. My son ordered the Surf & Turf, which was absolutely delicious, and I had an amazing Caesar salad with chicken that was fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. Located near Sacramento State with plenty of parking in a newer shopping center, it's an easy and convenient place to visit. Great food, friendly service, and a comfortable atmosphere. I have seen this place many times but never actually ended up trying it...a large part of that is because the parking in the shopping center is terrible but that's beside the point. I had been craving a chicken caesar salad wrap and saw that they had one so I did the online ordering earlier in the day and picked it up for lunch. When I arrived there was a sign that said to go to the ordering counter to pick it up. There was 1 person at the counter, with a line full of people waiting to order so I decided to go stand next to the bags that were presumably for take out orders. Within about 2 minutes the person taking orders walked over, asked me my name and handed me my bag. I brought the lunch home and it was still warm! The wrap was delicious...had been grilled a bit on both sides which was a great touch. It also came with a side of french fries which were also great. Busy day today so we just ordered delivery from Urban Plates (via Door Dash). The foods were good, just on the cold side. It's okay because it's 57 degrees when the food arrived. The Chimichurri Grass Fed Steak Plate and Steak plate were very good. The meats were very tender, soft and airy. So easy to eat even for people without teeth!!! We have asparagus, Mac and cheese, herbs roasted marble/petite potatoes, rainbow carrots and golden beets, and garlic Parmesan roast mushrooms as our sides. This was our first time coming here and we can easily say this won't be our last. The location is beautifully managed and I love the layout inside. I ordered their Crispy Onion Burger, solid 4/5! We visited Urban Plates for the first time last week. We had dinner there with my mother-in-law. She was happy they had a half sandwich- half salad option because she does not eat as much these days. The food was fresh and had good flavor! They remind me of Jack's Urban Eats and not just because of the name, but in that they're both fast-casual and have a lot of options to appeal to everyone. It's a pretty open, comfortable space. Order at the counter or kiosk and they will bring your food out to you. Water and utensils are self served. Overall it was a good dining experience. My husband said this place was good, so I decided to try it. We looked at the menu displayed in front of the entrance, and I ended up being drawn to the niçoise salad (thanks to the movie White Chicks). Finally went in and ordered with no issues, and grabbed our utensils and water. We were able to find a table for 4 fairly easily, and the tables didn't feel too crowded. Loved the open kitchen, and the high ceilings just helped the place feel less stuffy. Food didn't take long at all, and my niçoise salad was very flavorful. I personally enjoyed the acidity and other sharp tastes brought by the dressing and the niçoise olives. The hard-boiled egg helped balance it out slightly, but I can see this dish being a bit overpowering if you want something mellow. My ahi tuna was delicious as well, but I wouldn't have minded it being less cooked. Popped in on a Saturday afternoon. The parking lot LOOKS busy, but the restaurant itself was maybe 2/3 full. It was a little difficult to get a table at first because they don't seem to have any busboys to clear up the tables, so it was mostly the front servers cleaning up, which slowed things down since they would be stuck taking orders at times. The inside itself was nice. The decoration reminded me of another bar-type restaurant I tried, but it was well decorated with a nice open windows to bring in a lot of light. The food to me was just a 7/10. Nothing screams out at me or makes me feel like I'd have to have it again, aside from their desserts. My mom had seabass plate while my brother had the chimichurri steak plate. The fish came out super tiny, while the sides definitely overtook the fish. My brother mentioned the steak was just fine. Dad had the sustainable salmon and felt the fish was a little dry. While their plates SOUND good on paper, the execution left a lot to the imagination, so we probably won't be back again soon. read more

We stopped for lunch at Urban plates after riding on the American River trail. We really enjoyed our meal there. And the menu selections were unique and interesting. They had a really nice dining area as well as an outdoor patio with fire tables. I ordered a burger and fries and hubs ordered a blue cheese steak sandwich with chips. Our food was fresh and tasty. We commented that we would return to this place again. It was quite crowded and I think they are not going to have trouble staying in business! read more

Yummy plates. Got the new chili glazed salmon and their big chocolate chip cookie. Joon was very nice and patient.

The food here was great and full of flavour, not to mention well-prepared and carefully presented. We always ordered from here through delivery, so the one time we passed by and on a lunchtime, we took the detour to try out the place. And it did not disappoint! Your orders can be placed through the order counter. Service was friendly and efficient. The staff of the counter was kind enough to ask you and fill in the blanks with your order that you may have missed. Ulises(?) was the most helpful and prominent staff member of the place. When he wasn't manning the order counter, he was busy clearing out the tables! And he also followed up with any refills or other items we needed. The place was nice and clean. And the decor felt a bit on the industrial look...without losing the inviting feel. And the price is reasonable, given the taste, presentation and quantity. Urban Plates is a fantastic place to have lunch! They have so many fresh and yummy options! I had the grilled ahi plate with basmati rice and broccoli. All amazing! I have dietary restrictions and Patty was so accommodating and also kind about it. She even asked me if it was an allergy that might need urgent care. She noted a special occasion we celebrated as well. The best employee there is Patty! We also talked with Rachel who cleared our table and checked in on us so many times. She even brought us waters to go because of the heat! It was so nice and cool inside, but they also have a good sized patio to enjoy. The bathrooms were clean and cared for.
