I was lamenting the loss of my favorite Malaysian place and the lack of unique South East Asian restaurants when I found out about Sapha Kafae. Imagine my glee when I saw all their fabulous food in Instagram. Sadly, their current hours mean I can only visit Friday nights and weekend mornings. Never the less, we got there as soon as they opened on a Saturday morning to a quiet restaurant. We could leisurely place our orders without the stress of a line of hungry people behind us. Since we were 3 very hungry folks, we ordered several dishes to give us a taste of their food. We got the Kai Gata which is a breakfast dish with eggs and Chinese sausage served with a fresh baguette. We also got the Kopitam Breakfast set which includes soft boiled eggs, crispy toast, sweet roti with condensed milk and black coffee. While we were skeptical of this combination, it was a pleasant surprise. We also got roti with curry, coffee ribs, and a Gado Gado salad which came with a peanut dressing and crispy shrimp chips. Every item was delectable and scrumptious. Unfortunately they were out of the pandan cold brew which we were curious to try. I guess that's a good enough excuse to come back again, not just for the drinks but the other items we didn't get to try. The decor is funky featuring brightly colored walls with geometric patterns. It reminded me of 1960's Mod Squad. It's not a large place but there is outdoor seating available too. Come early because within 30 minutes of opening the cafe filled up quickly. We could only find street parking which wasn't so bad because we got there early. read more

This place unexpectedly became my favorite (and mandatory) weekend visit spot. I came for the Thai coffee and revisit for it whenever I have a chance. On the weekends, their hours are limited so come before they close at 2p! Freaking love the service here. Owned by a family who are Thai, the owners really give off the mom and pop shop energy in the best way. They're so nice, attentive, friendly, and GENUINE. They're the type of people who will remember you! It's one of the things that can make Sacramento feel like a community, not just a city. Ok, ok, onto the food and drinks! It's my goal to try everything here that's not chicken. (I personally avoid chicken for personal reasons lol.) Their Thai coffee is so good. Reminds me of Thai tea and I like it without an extra shot of espresso for it to be on the sweeter side. Their Moo Ping (pork skewers) were decent and their tamarind with rice powder dip is classic and so easy to finish. Their burger is a classic cheeseburger paired alongside Thai Lays potato chips. It's a staple for me, I've had it twice and WILL be ordering it again when I'm in a burger mood. Their chili oil?!?! I NEED A GALLON OF IT! It has spice, flavor, and pairs so well with all the items I've tried. I like their beef curry with the little roti cut up. I definitely can consume a whole big bowl of it. Located on the corner of O and 14th, you'll find this cute spot with the pink umbrellas. It's a spot in Sac that I hope stays open for decades. I am long overdue for a review here! My family and I came here last month on a Sunday for lunch, before we headed out back home to Orange County. I bookmarked this place from Yelp and were going to the coffee place across the street from them and been wanting to stop by before we head out of Sac to try their food because reviews and photos looked so good! They did not disappoint!! Food was delish here! We got the hainan chicken plate, the whole hen chicken grilled, tofu salad, and chicken banh mi! Ok this pleasant surprise of an AAPI owned restaurant is new around the block and may I say I am quite impressed. This cute spot is located downtown near many different food locations. The service here was so kind and they were very helpful in helping me to make adult decisions . The coffee and drinks are yum so I came here two days in a row! The chacuterie was good but needed more pâté. Easy fix. I'm also not a big cucumber fan so more greens and jalapeños will be requested in place next time. My friend and I came here on April 3rd around 9:30 a.m. . When we got there the space was pretty chill. There were two other tables with patrons. When we got there another person showed up so I would say roughly nine people within the restaurant around that time. I was extremely excited that behind the register was the owner and we told him it was our first time and he gave us an explanation of the drinks and the food and what his recommendations were considering that we were pretty hungry. We got the Kai Gata, the sunrise wrap, the pandan cold brew, and Oliang. First thing I need to call out cuz this was a user error I did not stir my cold brew when I got it I just started drinking it and I should have started with the straw or a spoon because all of the syrup was at the bottom. So little FYI and make sure to stir it so you get the full experience and taste. Beyond that little cautionary tale, the space was amazing like I said earlier and when the food came the owner had a big smile on his face and he just again was someone that made you feel welcomed. I loved my wrap. Though it was small in size it felt so feeling though and home-y. I am a person that likes spice and so I did ask the owner if he had any kind of spice and he gave me something from the back that I put on there that was superb a little citrusy a little peppery and I was just in heaven once I had that extra bit of sizzle. My friend really enjoyed his plate he said it was definitely comfort food and it is something that he remembers from his travels that he had on a random street corner talking to people within the area. We only went for breakfast but I definitely want to check out what this place looks like at night. The bar looked super fun and cozy so I wonder what that will be. Charming Cafe with friendly service. I have been on a international breakfast kick lately. Last week tried Japanese breakfast and this week we chose Sapha Kafae. Sapha serves Southeast Asian style breakfast. We started with the Black Thai Coffee a delicious mix of Thai Tea and espresso $7. Kaya Toast bread grilled in butter and stuffed with a sweet Pandan filling $6.50. The Coffee Rub ribs, pork ribs with a coffee rub and bbq sauce. Unfortunately the hand cut ribs contained many bone fragments which are problematic $15. The breakfast wrap egg, cheese and herbal sausage inside a Roti $11.75. Beef and vegetable curry, a small cup of delicious sweet curry with diced meat and vegetables served with one Roti $10.25. Overall everything was tasty. Gift and her husband operate a lovely space for food, conversation, and discussion. The food is quite delicious and unique among local Thai eateries. The service was excellent from offering suggestions or details about their offerings to checking on my needs throughout my time there. The owners made me feel most welcome and encouraged my return. The only downside I see for this place is that it only has street parking. I encourage anyone who likes Thai food to come, eat, and be treated well. Oh yes. Located in downtown and close to the office, we decided to check it out. We got there around 12:30 and they were already out of some stuff. You start by ordering at the counter and then find a seat. We tried to order the kai gata but they ran out of the roll and offered regular toast. Since I was not a fan of eating it with regular toast, I asked if they had rice, they said no, but offered porridge. This porridge was not like any porridge that I have had and I've been to Thailand and had porridge. The consistency was more like oatmeal. Not a fan. We got the Pork Pops and Hainan Hustle which were both very good. For drinks, I got the Nam Krajeab (Roselle Juice), which was very refreshing. I like the fact that it was not too sweet. Ordering was simple but the delivery was a little chaotic. Some folks received a number and some didn't; we didn't. There were 2-3 servers that continued to walk around with food not knowing who or where to deliver it to. At one point, they tried to deliver the same dish to us twice. I felt bad for the servers, they were doing their best with what little info they had to go one. They have one big table for a group but the rest of the tables is mainly for a single, double or up to 4 diners. Street parking only. Parking is not too bad, there's a decent amount of street parking . We were lucky to find a spot almost instantly. The vibe is quite cute inside and you order and pay at the counter before sitting down. I definitely had to get the pandan latte. It wasn't super sweet so I did like it but I've been into like cold foam lately so idk maybe a bit of that would have been better but that's fine. I got myself a sunrise wrap because the reviews were hyping it up and I was not disappointed. It is literally so good. I love the roti wrap it's so flaky and add a great texture. The side salad was a good touch because the acidity make the dish more interesting. I enjoy the little sauce that came with it and pour it all over the wrap. It's somehow so simple yet so comforting. Highly recommend. Of course I got a kaya toast because how else would you end a meal. It was the perfect choice. Not too sweet but just the right chef kiss amount. Ugh I'm upset my partner took half. He did not really like his kai gata unfortunately. So this so similar to a Viet breakfast dish but the difference is the meat. And it was a bit light on seasoning for us but they did bring out some chili oil. This one also took a bit more time to come out. Just a heads up. I think Sapha Kafae appeared in my Yelp feed because I had searched for Kaya Toast while I was in Hong Kong and Malaysia recently. That's the magic of Yelp algorithm, I'm guessing! Sapha Kafae is a family-owned cafe and brunch spot near the State Capitol on the corner of O and 14th Street. It has a big eye-catching wall mural on the exterior and you can't miss it. Street parking nearby and don't forget to feed those meters. The interior has a laid-back vibe with a bar tugged in the corner. We wanted to try everything on the menu because the ingredients sounds amazing! For this visit, I had Kai Gata, popular Thai street breakfast with eggs, savory meats cooked in a personal skillet serve with warm baguette. There is something about eating from a personal skillet that just elevate the experience. It was savory and filling! I enjoyed it thoroughly. We shared the Kaya Toast (A Must!). This is another popular breakfast or after school snack from Singapore and Malaysia. It's equivalent to a Peanut Butter Toast in US. Nostalgic for me. Nicely toasted with a good amount of Kaya and warm! We also shared the Pork Pops (Moo Ping), grilled pork skewers that's nicely marinated and comes with addicting dipping sauce serve with sticky rice. My son loved it and I thought it was okay for me. My son had the Hainan Hustle (Khao Mun Gai) with tendered poached skinless chicken, infused rice, comforting broth and savory ginger sauce. He finished the entire dish wiped cleaned! He loved it. I tried a piece of the chicken and it was flavorful. As for specialty drinks. I like the Black Thai with expresso, Thai tea and condensed milk. A balance of strong coffee that's mildly sweeten. We expected the Pandan Cold Brew to be greenish but it was made as a Cold Brew with Pandan flavoring? because it was like sweeten black coffee. The sandwich similar to a banh mi; soft pillowy baguette, served with sweet pickled daikon and carrots, and pate packing flavor into every bite. Can be ordered with chicken satay or pork. Chicken satay was delicious, I need to try the pork next time. The lion city coffee ribs, are definitely a hands on experience, I'm thankful for the moist towelettes LOL. Tender and well seasoned, served with the side of pickled daikon. The Hainan hustle/khao mun gai was flavorful and well balanced. The chili ginger dipping sauce is a must with the tender poached chicken. The subtle flavor of the garlic ginger rice was perfect. I could eat a bowl of the rice by itself. Came here on a Saturdsy morning to check out the grand opening event. The vibes were great felt like a family gathering to support a restaurant opening. I think the last time I had Kaya Toast was in Singapore, so it was kind of hard to match the expectations of that. I did expect the bread to at least be thicker. The chicken was cooked well, but the dipping sauce and broth were not to my liking. The curry had good flavor, but was surprised it was served at room temperature. All in all, everything I had was fine, but not anything l'd need to have again. I enjoyed my drink, the Black Thai. I hadn't previously had a drink like this and it was interesting to taste the combination of thai tea and espresso together. Service was friendly. You order at the cashier. Bright interior. Not a huge place, but they have as much seating as they can within the space. I didn't have trouble finding a place to park within a couple blocks of the business. It's free two-hour street parking. I know they're still in their early, soft-opening stages, so my rating provides a bit of grace that I might not provide for an established business. Sapha Kafae has been in business for about a month now. The decor is funky, modern. It is left from the previous tenants, but totally works with the current theme. It is counter service with the orders brought out to the table. I ordered the Hainan Hustle $14.50. It was fantastic. No scamming here. Real deal perfectly poached chicken. The chicken was moist, flavorful, and fork tender. Literally I was able to cut it with my fork. They do cut it in slices, but I further cut mine into smaller pieces. The garlic rice was fluffy and not at all overpowering garlicky. Very subtle. Yum. The clear chicken broth was superb. Mmm. Delicious. The dipping sauce was phenomenal, a flavor explosion. The cucumber slices were large and cut with rounded ridges which elevated the presentation. Actually the entire plate presentation was thoughtfully arranged. This is the type of place that elevates the Sacramento food scene. I'm elated that we're starting to get Southeast Asian breakfast spots like this one. We stopped into Sapha Kafae after seeing other's share their experiences from this Hot and New business. They're located in a great area, near the Capitol, and with plenty of street parking. You can find parkmobile spots and if you're ok with a little walk there's some free parking around too. They have indoor and outdoor seating options and are still decorated from the previous business, Society Bistro. The design is welcoming and fun and great for photos. The biggest change from the previous business is the new owners and menu. The menu boasts Southeast Asian cuisine with items from Vietnamese, Laotian, and Thai cultures. During our visit we ended up ordering the Pandan Cold Brew ($5), Green Thai Tea ($6), Funky Flatbread: Roti & Curry ($8), Lion City Coffee Ribs ($15), and Indochine Deli Board ($22). For two of us it was more than enough food and we both took items home. The Pandan Cold Brew was coffee forward, and the Green Thai tea has great flavor and was exactly what we expected. The Roti & Curry came with a piping hot dish of curry that smelled wonderful as they placed it on the table. The flavors were great, but it is hard as a sharable dish- definitely something you'd want all to yourself with a spoon and maybe a side of rice. The Lion City Coffee Ribs were delicious! The flavor was wonderful and we were both surprised that they are air fried ribs. The sauce and cook made them a favorite during our visit. The Indochine Deli Board is like a Banh Mi charcuterie board and it was so much fun making open faced sandwiches with our favorite toppings. It allows you to customize the bite and is great for a group. They're still settling in, so keep an eye on their social for updates to their menu. They're working on an alcohol permit so in the future you'll be able to enjoy their delicious food with coffee or wine. read more

We recently stopped by Sapha Kafae, a new Thai café with Southeast Asian-inspired eats and drinks, tucked away in Downtown Sacramento just steps from the State Capitol. We tried a variety of items from their menu, including: Pandan Cold Brew ($5) Traditional Thai Green Tea ($6) Lion City Coffee Ribs ($15) Funky Flatbread: Roti & Curry ($8) Indochine Deli Board ($22) I was genuinely impressed with everything we ordered. The Pandan Cold Brew was bold, rich, and aromatic. This drink is perfect for anyone who loves a strong coffee and would be a great go-to drink for a morning pick-me-up. The Lion City Coffee Ribs were the standout for us. This was a personal recommendation from the owner, and it did not disappoint. These air-fried pork ribs were coated in an original sticky, sweet-savory coffee glaze recipe, made with Anchor & Tree Coffee. The texture and flavor of the ribs were so amazing that I thought it had been grilled. Next time, I'm definitely pairing this with a side of rice! The Funky Flatbread: Roti & Curry came out sizzling hot and smelling incredible. I recommend eating this right away while it's still fresh. The roti was crisp on the outside and soft inside. While the curry was a little thinner than expected, the flavor delivered. This could easily be a solo dish, and I would've liked it even more paired with rice. The Indochine Deli Board was a fun and creative take on a banh mi. It's basically a build-your-own banh mi charcuterie board with a Lao-Thai twist. I loved the toasted bread, the spread of meats and pickled veggies, and the attention to presentation. A great choice for sharing with a couple people. Between the two of us, we had plenty to take home. Though they're still in their soft opening phase with limited hours, I highly recommend checking this place out. The interior is groovy and perfect for pictures, and their bar has yet to open. There are already dishes we tried that I know would pair very well with some wine or beer. That's definitely something to look forward to! The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming. You can tell they're passionate about honoring their heritage through food, and as a Southeast Asian myself, I could truly taste the authenticity in every bite. Heard about this new spot on Instagram and when we arrived I was surprised it took over a fairly new coffee shop! They have a great space though and a nice corner spot. They were very friendly here and food and drinks came out fast! - Thai green tea: ended up getting this because they ran out of pandan cold brew but I enjoyed it. Not too strong but great flavor - Black Thai: this is a Thai tea with espresso and perfect if you like stronger coffee drinks! Definitely will give you a big caffeine boost - Moo Krob crispy pork belly bites: these were cooked to perfection! Loved the vinegar dipping sauce on the side. This portion is perfect as an appetizer or a dish to share on the side with someone. - Moo Dang sandwich: came out quickly! Wish the bread tasted more fresh but otherwise the meat and the veggies inside were all delicious. I'd probably skip on this one next time because it was too much bread for me but it was a good one to split with my husband. Can't wait to come back and try their breakfast items! I was excited to see the kopitiam set and the kaya toast on the menu since there is nowhere here in Sacramento that has it! read more
